Andrea Klunder, The Creative Impostor Studios
The Creative Impostor podcast hosted by Andrea is a truly delightful discovery. From the first episode I stumbled upon, I was instantly hooked. Andrea and her guests discuss relevant topics that are incredibly helpful for creatives and creative entrepreneurs. The episode on productivity and self-care really made me rethink my approach to finding a new group of peers based on the current stage of my business. This show has become a source of inspiration and serenity in my life.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the perfect balance that Andrea brings to each episode. Her conversations with guests leave you feeling inspired and at peace, even on days when life and work seem overwhelming or lackluster. The fresh perspectives shared in the latest episodes focusing on traveling have been particularly enlightening. The show always leaves me with new ideas and validation for what I'm already thinking about, which is an impressive feat.
Andrea's mindfulness perspective is another standout aspect of this podcast. In Episode 81: All About Your Voice, she discusses a long-term battle she has faced with being comfortable with her own voice. This topic isn't talked about enough, and it was refreshing to hear someone openly address it. It's just one example of how Andrea brings unique insights to her discussions.
While it's hard to find any flaws in The Creative Impostor podcast, one minor downside may be that there can sometimes be a slight lack of variety in the guest lineup. However, this is a small critique considering the quality of conversations and stories shared.
In conclusion, The Creative Impostor is a must-listen podcast for anyone feeling lost or in need of inspiration. Andrea's soothing voice and thoughtful discussions leave you feeling less alone and more connected to your creative journey. It's a resource that provides valuable insights from both the host and expert guests, making it an essential addition to any creative entrepreneur's playlist.
Hey. I've been away from this podcast for about 2 years and I'm feeling kinda awkward about it. But, either you're still here or you've just found me, and that makes me super happy because I've been recently inspired to return to producing The Creative Impostor, amidst all of the other shows I'm producing for clients. I've been noticing, however, that some things are changing in the podcast space, and with creators more broadly. Some of it is awesome, and some not so much! So what do you do when some sort of transformation seems imminent? You stare bravely into the void, try to let go of expectations, and start asking questions. Let me tell you a Creative Impostor story for the New Year. It's about a woman taking a huge risk. The story begins during that weird week between Christmas and New Year's. Where noting gets done, no one knows what day it is and yet, somehow, you imagined getting caught up on all the things you didn't get to yet this year. It's Monday and I'm driving from Chicago to a small town in Wisconsin, not far over the state line. It's only 6pm but it grows increasingly darker and more ominous to this self-diagnosed city girl. I'm on a call with my friend Julia… running my internal monologue past her. (Thank you, Julia, as always for indulging me.) Why am I driving to Wisconsin right now? What exactly do I hope to accomplish? Who do I think I am? Why indeed? I'm taking a huge risk. It's not the same kind of risk I took when I moved from Michigan to the big city of Chicago out of college, or when I started auditioning for storefront theater productions around the city, or when I quit my full-time arts admin job to start my own yoga studio business, or even when I started this podcast. What feels different is that I'm telling you now, before it exists, before I even know exactly what it is. And the reason it's a risk to tell you is because I worry that I might not finish it. After 18 months of caution, this holiday season finally offers many of us a chance to commune with family and connect with old friends. Yay? Nay? How do we feel about the contact? The conversations? A lot has changed since the last time we headed over the river and through the woods. Not least is a collective intolerance for political viewpoints that don't align with our own. These are deeply partisan times to be sure. That said, is it possible for divided friends and family members to foster mutual respect for all POVs, even wind up standing on common ground? Can we begin to reclaim civil discourse around cafe and family dining tables alike? Josh Lewis (a lifelong Conservative) and David Blatt (a committed Liberal) are test-driving a version of this complicated idea, facilitating conversations between reasonable, rational voices from opposite sides of America's political discourse. Those of us about to cross into enemy territory armed only with a hot side dish and a bottle of wine will find David's and Josh's insight helpful for maintaining healthy debate around the holiday table. Among the topics we discuss is the enduring appeal of uncivil discourse, a tactic that's long stood as an editorial board favorite, amplifying outrage in everything from 17th-century broadsheets to thoroughly modern cable news. David and Josh remind us that retracing our collective steps back to the civil middle is a marathon, not a sprint. Take heart even if a friend, colleague, or family member (or two) appears unwilling to dial down the angry rhetoric. And, maybe, take an extra bottle of wine along just in case. *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Episode 133. Beginner's mind. That place where you don't know anything, where there's simply a desire to do. An inkling -- what a terrific word, inkling -- a slight knowledge or vague notion, it even implies curiosity. It's a good place to be, with infinite possibility. It's like the beginning of a new relationship with its flush of excitement and that nauseated uncertainty. Your senses are heightened and your rational brain is fuzzy. You can't think about any thing else. And six years ago in 2015, I was there with podcasting. I'd been there before with operating a storefront yoga studio, with becoming a yoga teacher, with filmmaking, with acting. And I suppose even with singing, though, I don't really remember that because I was a toddler. But this was different. *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... You can find them here: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/133 Podcasting? While recording this episode, I wrote down the following equation: Communication + boundaries = freedom to explore and play So, yeah...we're talking about sex as self-care with Karen Yates, somatic sex educator as well as creator and host of Wild & Sublime, the live show and podcast that delivers a sexy spin on infotainment. Sex however is too narrow a term - at least by current, uniquely American standards. Erotic mindfulness is more expansive and inviting, focusing on openness and sensual pleasure rather than just the act. If you're like me - a full-grown, cis-gendered, sexually active adult - even PG-rated discussions about sex (like this one) still make your cheeks flame. Karen, who's a longtime member of Chicago's sex-positive scene, has a knack for making frank discussions welcoming no matter where her audience falls on the sexual spectrum. “We talk about kink. We talk about vanilla sex. We talk about LGBTQ issues. We talk about just how to relate to each other.” Did you catch that? Relating to each other and to self is Wild & Sublime's main thrust. Pardon the pun but when you hang around with Karen, you can't help it. And if COVID has left you blissfully or woefully partner-free? Erotic mindfulness should be at the top of your self-care practice. “It's always good to build a new relationship with your body because the body gives so much information,” Karen says. “Bottom line, no matter where you come from, it's going to be an expansive, extraordinary exploration.” *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Can a conversation with a rebel influencer, recorded mid-pandemic, inspire us toward greater self-love and trust as we emerge from the COVID cocoon? Jetty Nieuwenhuis (pronounced Yeti) is the rebel in question. It's an appropriate modifier to a term that absolutely conjures images of well-connected content creators seemingly unencumbered by life's petty worries. Also: young. Influencer is overwhelmingly associated with youth. When it comes to the typical influencer credentials, Jetty aged out of the ingenue mold before she even began. Those few additional years have gifted her with wisdom, experience, and a healthy dose of authentic middle-finger mindset. I love Jetty because when she says living your life is the ultimate act of self-care, it's not a hollow platitude; it's her ongoing practice. A survivor of Lyme disease and bulimia, Jetty gradually grew into a place of listening to her body and mind rather than other people. So, here we are, ever so slowly move beyond our protective bubbles. We're bound to bump up against our fears out there. That's okay. Maybe we know ourselves a little better than before. Perhaps we're more adept at focusing inward as we proceed outward. As Jetty says, we can live life on our own terms. There's no time like the present. *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... "Anti-racism work is not about saving the unfortunate; anti-racism work is about saving all of us, improving the lives of all of us." ~Lori L. Tharps One of the themes to emerge from the not your typical self-care series is connection. Specifically, the idea that pursuing practices that require greater inward focus or offer less obvious immediate gratification creates a ripple effect. Anti-racism is self-care on a global scale. If you're thinking, “Um, Andrea, that's a bold claim and an unconventional discipline to add to my routine,” let me counter with this: it's all about mindset. Lori L. Tharps - yes, of Kinky Gazpacho fame - believes that each individual action chips away at a towering problem until our collective efforts topple the entire system. There's one critical catch. “If people look at anti-racism work, particularly white people, if they look at it as ‘well, you know, this is charity work for Black people and Brown people and I should just do it because it's the right thing and they need my help,' that's not the right mindset to go into,” cautions the blogger and host of My American Meltingpot. On her podcast, Lori approaches the practice of anti-racism with clear-eyed directness, especially in her “Don't Be Racist” series, recorded in the last half of 2020. In it, she offered some different ways of thinking about how we view the subject through a broader lens, how we incorporate these efforts into our lives, what that may look like - and allowing space for what that may not look like. Lori's creative non-fiction style transitions seamlessly from her writing to her show which makes the prospect of dismantling this whole fabricated story of race totally doable. *** Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... "I don't want to be interacting with people on a day-to-day basis and have them feeling like, 'Andrea...she's just really collapsed.' That's terrible. That's not the energy that I want to be putting out into the world. That's not how I want to be perceived. And it's definitely not how I think of myself." ~Andrea Klunder I don't know about you, but at this moment, at the end of March 2021, moving into April I am feeling like it is time for a shift. That makes sense. It's springtime in the Midwest. It's about those green little plants that are popping up out of the earth. It's about opening the windows for the first time in ages and doing some spring cleaning, clearing the dust. And WHOA, has it been one long winter! I'm going to go ahead and categorize summer 2020 as winter, spring 2020 as winter. It was all winter, as far as I was concerned, for, you know, pandemic reasons. And I decided to do a little spring cleaning for my VOICE with a voice lesson -- coaching session actually -- but I have not had a voice lesson in more than 10 years and this opened up a bunch of cans of worms (ew!) -- about health, recovering from trauma, fears about aging, identity, the way people perceive me, and the stories we tell ourselves. Thank you to Davin Youngs for the session and the insights! (Meet Davin in episode 082.) Now as we move into this shift together... Episode 128. “Even a true, traditional guru — his only intention would be to introduce you to the teacher that exists within yourself.” ~Mason Pain Throughout this entire pandemic (hello, first anniversary!), I've grown more keenly aware of my need for: A protective bubble for my mind, a metaphysical helmet if you like, to protect my synapses from the torrent of bad news and keyed-up discourse and… A phrase to describe the practices that contribute to my sense of inner + outer wellbeing – something beyond the retail boon of self-care and… While I'm at it, a true reckoning around those beneficial practices with problematic roots It's a lot to unpack in a year that has served up more than its share of awakenings. Gong resonance sound therapist and yoga teacher Mason Pain has a strategy for calibrating his thoughts and actions around all those weighty issues. He advocates that we all develop more discernment and build intuition into our everyday lives. He's well aware of what a challenge that can be having wrestled with the recent (as well as the long-standing) revelations accusations of disturbing abuse committed by Yogi Bhajan, the now-deceased spiritual head of Kundalini yoga. Episode 127. “We really need routines, so our reptilian brain isn't on high alert/alarm mode all the time.” ~Mira Binzen One of the throughlines to emerge from our exploration of not your typical self-care is the basic human need for routine, some sort of practical ritual that anchors us to calm even during life's daily chaos. Mira Binzen believes the power of practice lies in its rigor and discipline - two words the commercial well-being industry willfully ignores. She has a keen understanding of the adjustments needed to return emotional, behavioral, and physiological systems to balance. As a yogi with a background in developmental therapy working with children who have sensory processing issues, aromatherapy is one of her favorite tools. Adolescents aren't the only ones in need of self-regulation assistance these days. Most of us have spent the last year swinging from manic productive impulses to bone-deep lethargy. The use of oils and oil blends as part of long-range self-care practice works to even out those opposing drives. There's a science to scent, of course, but you don't have to understand the process behind its power. “You already know,” says Mira, somehow addressing both essential oils and our intrinsic need to return to the rigor of our routines. “We don't trust ourselves, or we wonder if we're doing it right or enough, and you are. Episode 126. “I think that a lot of Black people are waking up to our beauty and our majesty and looking at... we are not who we have been reported to be.” ~Lisa Lackey The sun is setting a bit later these days (hurray!), so I thought I'd take Creative Impostor listeners back to an episode I recorded around the time of the winter solstice, those darkest days of the year. Hear me out. I promise this conversation remains relevant to our time, regardless of what the calendar says, and our ongoing exploration of not your typical self-care regimes. Lisa Lackey, M.A., LCPC, CSAT, CMAT, lays out her fundamental approach to some of life's most vexing challenges: depression and the generational traumas that often compound it. Racism, too, and the cultural norms embedded within our public and private approaches to mental well-being. Besides being one of my podcast clients, Lisa is an insightful, some might say even a prescient person. OK, I am saying that because our chat back in December touches on issues that many of us are experiencing today. Yes, it's easy to forecast the spirit-crushing lethargy to come at the onset of a midwestern winter. Yes, it's just as simple to predict nationwide sadness over the first anniversary of the pandemic, with its unfathomable death count and slow vaccination rollout. Coupled with the country's ongoing racial reckoning, however, it's been starkly apparent to me how many people in my personal and professional circles have all - very recently - reported feeling something more profound than a passing case of the winter blues. For a collective depression this deep, the self-care must be revolutionary. This episode hits the trifecta by exploring the bold, messy, and real issues that are keeping us apart while simultaneously drawing us closer together. Two brilliant series from Lisa Black Women, Racism, and Trauma and Black Woman Burnout are available now on Insideout Conversations. The episode I specifically referenced (and sobbed while editing) was 36: Black women, racism, trauma, and our beautiful bodies. Episode 125. "Being glued to your chair, to your computer, to your phone doesn't necessarily equal productivity. ~Pam Covarrubias Productivity and self-care may sound like contrary pursuits. Still, if anyone can combine these classic opposites into an uncommon but cohesive practice, it's podcaster, conscious productivity coach, and recovering procrastinator Pam Covarrubias. Heads up: This episode makes liberal use of a “b” word, an “s” word, and an “f” word. Intrigued? Fabulous! Although the language doesn't get nearly as salty as you might imagine (what, precisely, are you imaging?), the episode does provide a few choice words, courtesy of Pam, to add to your self-care arsenal. Fire away the next time you need to make space for productivity. Once you've made some breathing room, it's time to supercharge those tasks and lean into some reciprocal encouragement. For that, you're going to need a PowerSister. No, not a blood relative. No, not even a close friend (don't despair, it's for a good reason). Learn what a PowerSister is and how to find one in this episode and then head over to last year's Podcast Envy conversation where Pam and I chat more extensively about her show Café con Pam. Episode 124. "In the midst of uncertainty, when there is this kind of situation of not knowing what to do, you realize that the majority of people aren't doing anything. So there's an opportunity there to do something.” ~Kate Sullivan Good conversation over a delicious meal with friends is the stuff of my pandemic daydreams. Emmy Award-winning journalist Kate Sullivan has found a distinctive way to tell inspiring stories over food - and package the combo for streaming. To Dine For is her celebration of ingenuity, hard work, and achievement told over food, now available via PBS and Amazon Prime. There's also a companion podcast. Each episode showcases a conversation between Kate and her guest at a restaurant of her guest's choice. Whether recorded in a Michelin-starred dining room or a booth at IHOP, Kate's genuine curiosity makes for intimate and revelatory discussions. With a side of buttermilk pancakes. Or garlic noodles. As a viewer, To Dine For's format feels especially transportive right now. Part armchair travelogue, part ask-me-anything, the show offers respite from the uncertainty swirling around us. The interviews remind us that daring to dream is always an option. Kate says the process of crafting, pitching, and producing the show taught her the same. It took a leap of faith to leave her secure but draining job in local news and trust that inspiration would lead to personal and professional fulfillment. Episode 123. "I feel that self-care, sometimes, it's not just about you; it could be, like, community self-care.” ~Cassandre Dunbar What is self-care now? In the wake of last summer's peaceful protests against racial inequity? Alongside a presidential transition marred by threats of further violence? How can we support the collective while caring for ourselves - and vice versa? Challenging questions about wellness have led me to people who are redefining the standard answers, like Cassandre Dunbar. As host of the podcast, Be Well, Sis, she embodies the idea of self-care as a civic duty, speaking directly to women of color, a group long under-considered by mainstream wellness content creators. Even with her medical degree and a background in teaching, Cassandre had difficulty locating wellness information, especially discussions centered on mental health within the Black community. So, she did what anyone with a full-time job and a family would do when inspiration struck: she let it percolate in the back of her mind for five years. Then the pandemic hit and all her fears about starting a podcast morphed into fuel for her fire. “I just embraced being an amateur.” Podcasting inadvertently became a three-pronged approach to wellness. Crafting each episode made her feel good, which, in turn, made her family happier. Producing the show connected her community and expanded their access to vital information. “I want women to have a safe space to exchange ideas and information, to get encouragement...I want people to feel empowered in their health and in their wellness.” Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Episode 122. "It's not enough to just sit there and come to an awareness about it; you literally have to do something about it.” ~Rebecca Lefebvre After a year that's spanned 42-odd months, the first episode of 2021 is a conversation steeped in practical magic, the kind that can recenter individuals and rehabilitate entire social structures. That's a tall order, I know. Luckily, Rebecca Lefebvre BSW, BSN, RN is an expert with a gift for interpreting ancient tools and applying them to 21st-century challenges. As all those post-nominal letters indicate, Rebecca knows her way around modern systems: social work, science, graphic design, public policy, small business ownership. She understands what makes personal and public systems tick. And what has thrown so many of them out of whack. At Avec La Vie, her online shop, Rebecca curates a collection of products for conscious, purposeful living she created to restore individual operating systems. My favorite is her trio of lush, boxed card decks. With each nature-inspired deck, Rebecca gently ushers the querent through stages of contemplation, healing, and transformation. Collective Wisdom, the beautiful bi-monthly magazine that Rebecca began self-publishing in March of 2020, is another outlet for her interest in resetting our collective outlook. Each issue she says is a place where science and spirituality unite around insights, opportunities, and activities. Rebecca's creative artistry and professional expertise are the perfect antidotes to the year that was. I've got my deck ready... Episode 121. "He told me to stay, that love was more important than visiting temples.” ~Andrea Klunder It came to my attention recently that I did a whole series on travel stories and had not recorded my own travel story to share with you. And while I have been recording these conversations for you with amazing guests about travel AND now self-care, Erica Courdae and India Jackson offered a theme for the month of November in their professional DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) network Pause On The Play. The theme: wellness. Perfect timing! And then one day India posted the following prompt in the group: What's the most adventurous or uncomfortable thing you've tried in support of your wellbeing? What were your takeaways? Now wellness, wellbeing, self-care... that was the industry that I was in, and ultimately feel like I failed in, for more than five years. Between yoga, meditation, therapeutic bodywork, Reiki, essential oils, tarot, acupuncture, sound healing, botanical skincare... I've tried a lot of things and they have often put me in uncomfortable positions, but the word 'adventurous' felt different. It immediately brought to mind a risk, more accurately, a series of risks that I took for my 34th birthday in 2012. I posted a response to that prompt in Pause On The Play and India asked me if I had yet recorded a podcast episode about that experience. I was surprised to look back over my catalog of The Creative Impostor to discover that I hadn't... not really. But now that I have crafted that story on virtual paper, I see why I hadn't shared it. It feels vulnerable. I think it's because I have some regrets from this time in my life and from this story in particular. So, here goes... Episode 120. "Perfection is not required.” ~Kelly Covert If your inbox is anything like mine (I feel for you), there's no end to the number of resolution-writing guides you've received; everything one needs to generate! improve! accomplish! To say nothing of the bad habits you're sure to (finally) crush. As aggressive well-meaning as they are, those articles promising more and better ultimately leave me feeling less than. It's beyond time for resolution evolution! Inner-voice coach, author, musician, and podcaster Kelly Covert agrees. After years of failing to live up to grand resolutions, Kelly swapped quantitative perfectionism - those mostly material goals our culture loves to measure - for kinder habits. Kelly distilled these techniques into a quarterly journal called The Enoughness Planner. I love this format! Unlike traditional goal-setting, this guide prompts participants to discern the difference between conditioned expectations and deeply-rooted intentions. Once identified, you create a personalized routine to support what Kelly calls everyday worthiness. After that, it's just a matter of building upon activities that make you feel good rather than ticking tasks off a homogenized list of accomplishments. Kinder habits and everyday worthiness. Better goals for the New Year. Full show notes, resources, opportunities, other podcasts & books mentioned... Episode 119. "It's sort of like using frequency as a pharmacy.” ~Shannon Harris ***All music in this episode (other than our theme music) is used with permission from Shannon Harris, and is composed, produced, and copyrighted by Shannon.*** It's not a stretch to say that travel is a form of self-care. As this series transitions from unusual travel paths to uncommon self-care, it's not a stretch to say that Shannon Harris is the perfect person to help bridge the gap. Shannon's a musician, DJ, world traveler, educator, Qi Gong practitioner, and mastermind behind Audio Pharmacology™. What the...? You got it right if you're thinking sound as medicine. By tapping into the science of sound, he harnesses frequencies associated with the body's systems. Acupuncturists enlist needles to impact the body's energy flow; Shannon works with music. The goal of each is the same: to positively impact organs, brainwaves, muscles, chakras, tissue, etc. To further his self-directed, sound-centric education, Shannon's made travel a priority. Before the pandemic, he gigged around the globe, using his downtime to learn from local elders and spiritual leaders. These days, he's sticking closer to home. While he waits for the world to reopen, Shannon's putting the finishing touches on a project that's near to my heart: an immersive experience tailored to the needs of Chicago public school students. Episode 118. "I think we often overlook what's in our backyards. Like, it's ridiculous how many places that you can see if even if you just drive a few hours out and really appreciate what you have." ~Debbie Arcangeles Conversation with Debbie Arcangeles is a lot like spinning the giant prize wheel at a carnival: every topic is a winner. And since I'm terrible at choosing, Debbie obliged me with a spin ‘round multiple subjects - travel! entrepreneurship! remote work! work/life balance! podcasting! - in just under thirty minutes. As the creative force behind The Offbeat Life, a business that includes her podcast, an entrepreneurial skills platform, and brand partnership opportunities, Debbie's built a fully-remote lifestyle doing what she loves: traveling and speaking with people. While there's a lot to love about her digital nomad perks, big lessons come with the territory. Some are cultural; like how her Filipino features are often mistaken for the predominant local ethnicity. Others are professional; like the amount of time she's dedicated to growing her business. After years as an informal source for answers to entrepreneurial and digital nomad questions, Debbie created a menu of masterclasses and professional podcast services. She's equal parts teacher and cheerleader of the location independent lifestyle. Debbie has tips for making the most of local life, and plenty of international tales to tell. Episode 117. "I think it's always kind of a struggle of not feeling like I'm fully fulfilling my purpose. As much as I love my business and I love the freedom, especially, that it gives me - I mean, what entrepreneur doesn't love that? - but I still feel that lack of purpose." ~Rebekah Read Listen to The Creative Impostor's current series, and you'll quickly pick up on a theme: travel as a love story. The guests differ in age and background, but all have prioritized travel, building a professional life on the go. These inspiring people share a love for the places and people off the beaten path, some backing into romance on the road, while others have found forever homes in foreign lands. Rebekah Read's story is a bit different but no less love-filled. “All of a sudden, I was thrown into motherhood and was not expecting that. I was 22, you know? I thought I was going to be doing marketing.” Now 28, the Seattle-based owner of Rebekah Read Creative, a website branding agency, looks back at her younger self and knows with complete conviction that her trajectory pointed in one direction. Rebekah first visited Central America as a student fulfilling college degree requirements. She returned as a grad with her marketing degree in hand and big dreams of assisting a local non-profit with its messaging. Reality quickly settled in. Rebekah shifted gears, working on a foster care program for orphaned children while also providing ad hoc care in the nursery. The physically, spiritually, and emotionally exhausting experience crystalized Rebekah's desire to combine passion with purpose. Digital nomads and skill seekers take note: Rebekah's offering a Squarespace SEO course for $97 which includes a Facebook group for community support during your website revamp process. She'll also host Round 2 of her online mastermind program in 2021! Space is limited and registration begins in November. "I really want other people to go out and live the most adventurous life that you can, and to fill your life with stories, because it's so easy to live the same exact year over and over and over again.” ~Adrien Behn It's The Creative Impostor's 5th birthday!!! Reviews: http://ratethispodcast.com/creative The Creative Impostor Collective: http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/community The best travel experiences are the most personal. Adrien Behn certainly proves that point. As the voice and vision behind Strangers Abroad, Adrien has crafted a podcast that plays like a series of immersive travelogues-as-intimate-conversation. In the process, she's archiving the experiences that make travel so seductive and inviting listeners to take a chance on connecting with the unknown. In her quest to connect with the unfamiliar, Adrien's travels remind her of the common thread that binds us all. Her approach is clear-eyed and grounded, as one would expect from a backpacker practiced in the arts of budgeting and making do. “I sometimes think travel is really hard work because it can be very confronting and put you in a pressure cooker in a good way.” Adrien reminds travelers - especially women - that the pressure cooker is what makes trips off the well-worn path worth the effort. And while she's not advocating that anyone wander through Latin America with their soon-to-be-ex, she is suggesting that expansive growth takes place in the most unlikely travel circumstances. Pushing past the physical and mental boundaries of our comfort zones is a challenge anytime. During a pandemic, it can feel downright impossible. Adrien's exploring several creative options to rev up her flow (feminist porn anyone?) but not forcing any of those endeavors too seriously. For the woman who published her first episode of season 2 of Strangers Abroad on the same day that New York City went into hard lockdown, low-key and local travel options offer the same mind-expanding experiences as future global adventures. It's all about the deeper connection. Head over to Adrien's crossover episode on Podcast Envy for insight into how she crafts such evocative audio adventures. Episode 115. "It can be done. You can bring the travel adventure home.” ~Lisette Austin Traveling is a state of mind - especially during a pandemic. And free access is awarded to those who think outside the box. Lisette Austin takes that axiom and spins it into COVID comfort for those suffering from acute wanderlust. Before she gifts us with her stay-put suggestions and addictive optimism, however… Allow me to cry into my teacup for a moment. Chances are if you're an avid traveler (or were an avid traveler) before COVID, you're doing some crying of your own -- perhaps into a different beverage but tears all the same. There's a frivolous kind of torture that XXX my soul every time I hear a jet engine roar overhead. Planes crisscross the sky all day long - but no one's going anywhere. Especially not me. Or you. Unless you're lucky enough to live beyond the restrictions imposed on US passport holders. So what's a globetrotter to do when the world's in timeout? Jet Set Lisette as she's known to her podcast audience and travel-hack students has some ideas, and they all begin with this question: what is the thing inside us that makes travel feel so important? The answer, she says, strips away all the admittedly fun distractions that add flavor to our trips and reconnects us to our heart-centered motivation. Is there a salve that recreates the adventure and connectedness of travel? “Travel can feel like this amazing, quick vehicle for those kinds of experiences,” says Lisette. By identifying core motivations and using those as prompts, pouty armchair travelers (with teacups in hand) will land on resourceful ways to bring the feeling home and pass the time until the world opens up again. Psst: Listen to more Lisette on a crossover episode of Podcast Envy! Links, resources, opportunities... Episode 114. "I think we should all strive to be a global citizen and to get past, you know, our immediate doorstep.” ~Sarah Mikutel Sarah Mikutel is back! This time, for her Creative Imposter close-up. If you haven't yet tuned in to our conversation over on Podcast Envy...queue up that episode immediately. On it, you'll hear Sarah share her evolution from avid podcast listener to creator of two+ shows: Postcard Academy, Podcasting Step-By-Step, and a *secret* one that takes niche podcasting to the next level*. For this show, Sarah treats us to some lyrical, sensory-laden armchair travel. If, like me, you're aching to feel the excitement of landing in a foreign country again, Sarah's origin story of sorts will spark creative daydreaming. Her predictions for post-pandemic wanderings will prompt you to revisit that travel vision board you shelved way back in March. What sets Postcard Academy apart from other travel-focused media is the lens through which Sarah presents her stories. Her narrative exists outside the Eat, Pray, Love trope, the lost soul that - for better or worse - has become the defacto persona of many female-driven works. Instead, she provides an alternative viewpoint, a fun and informative guide for the average traveler. “I like to feature women, and we talk about their adopted city and how they made it happen and get their insider food and culture tips.” *Want the details on Sarah's *secret* show? Episode 113. "I was incredibly romantic because all my ideas about working and becoming a professional and building my career, they were already a little bit torn apart by me quitting my first job.” ~Zselyke Kecskés This episode is a love story, an old-fashioned romance with a quirky meet-cute, all filtered through the lens of decidedly modern challenges: WhatsApp courtship, COVID complications, and digital nomadship. It's the stuff of Netflix dreams – with a dose of reality that only serves to make the story more relatable. The heroine of this adventure, Zselyke Kecskés, is a multilingual digital marketing specialist for small business. Her decisions may appear scattershot on paper. Girl goes to a mountain meditation retreat. Girl meets boy. Girl and boy spend intense days together. Girl travels 30 hours to be with boy one week before starting a new job. And that's just where the story gets exciting! Listen closely. As Zselyke's journey progresses – from Hungary (the country of her birth) to Chicago (her current location) – the main drivers of her life become apparent and begin to make complete sense together. Wanderlust and belonging are competing forces on paper. The push to get out vs the pull to settle down. And the two apply not only to travel but to jobs and relationships as well. But beyond the incredible travelogue that Zselyke's story provides (especially in the time of pandemic-paused roaming), her life experiences are a reminder that the two work well in tandem if we allow ourselves the space to let them play out. Episode 112. "Travel will humble you quickly.” ~Lisa James Mark this episode as your first dose of The Creative Impostor's cure for cabin fever, a prescription for passport blues and Instagram envy in the time of COVID. Lisa James kicks off a series of conversations with travel storytellers. The woman behind Adventurous Midlifer is challenging the rigid terms by which influencers are defined - and fostering genuine connections along the way. An intrepid adventurer, Lisa's embraced travel realness since she first grabbed her passport, her backpack, her five-year-old twins and set off Guatemala. In 1999. Pre-5G. Post-Guatemalan civil war. 35 countries later, Lisa's enjoying her life as the antithesis of Instagram's typical travel influencer. She's Black, budget-conscious, and middle-aged. She doesn't even like taking or posting pictures all that much! Not exactly a POV found with a quick scroll. “I just felt like I wanted to create something where I can talk about what I love - which is travel - but I can talk about what's in my heart, that's relevant to this season in my life, of midlife.” Links, resources, opportunities... Episode 111. "In this phase of growth, it feels weird. It feels nebulous. It feels like this molting bird... Sometimes it takes as long as it takes, you know, it's not the enlightenment Olympics.” ~Tina Dietz This episode is for the birds. Or, rather, about birds. Or, more accurately, how much creative humans have in common with molting parrots. Hang with me; this episode isn't wall-to-wall ornithology talk. I recorded my conversation with Vocal Leadership Expert and Podcast Host Tina Dietz way back in the before-times. Still, her message about self-acceptance and faith in our creative evolution rings doubly true at a time when putting our trust in anything is a struggle. She just happens to equate this transition with shedding feathers. As founder and CEO of Twin Flames Studios, Tina molds (not molts) experts into influencers, teaching clients how to amplify their message. Whether it's through their own podcasts, as guests of other shows, or as in-demand speakers, Tina's vocal leadership expertise goes beyond the simple correction of speech mechanics. Transitions rarely come without challenges. There's the macro level, global shifts taking place right now, and then there are the awkward personal doubts and missteps. You're not wrong for feeling vulnerable. Massive life changes force us to question our personal and professional identities. Happy molting! Links, resources, opportunities... "Whenever there's a big shift in the world, those who have the most embedded power stand to lose the most. And those who have had little power, like small businesses, artists... they have an opportunity to seize that moment, pivot quickly in a way that most of these large institutions can't and take advantage of the new landscape.” ~Lucas Spivey By listener request, I am brining you this bonus episode with Lucas Spivey, founder of Culture Hustlers, to talk about how COVID is good for creators. Episode 110. "A lot of businesses aren't going to survive... even those that do are gonna look different on the other side of this. And that's okay.” ~Andrea Klunder I want to have a little heart to heart with you today about where we are right now, how we are right now. Moments ago, I completed a recording session with Pat Wetzel, founder of Cancer Road Trip (from episode 109.) We were recording a conversation for her brand new podcast Bump In the Road. We know what that means, right? It's when things are going along one way and then, then whoops -- Yeah -- Not going along so great. There's a hiccup. There's a problem. There's a change of plans that is required and maybe not welcome. I think that we could safely say that the vast majority of us have in 2020 hit a bump in the road. I mean, what are the chances that we would all hit one at roughly the same time? Episode 109. "Ultimately, it's up to you to craft your own life.” ~Pat Wetzel, author, traveler, founder & creator of CancerRoadTrip When I asked Pat Wetzel to imagine her life in the wildly uncertain future, the creator of CancerRoadTrip and the new podcast Bump In The Road, responded with complete certainty. But first… To understand Pat's optimistic attitude toward the personal and the professional, it's helpful to know how she got here. Diagnosed with supposedly inoperable cancer in 2009, Pat embarked on her treatment journey to discover that “care” rarely addressed experiences beyond the physical. AntiCancerClub was her antidote, a platform that gave voice to cancer's unspoken topics (social isolation, fear, spiritual inquiry, and the shifting nature of friendships). Investors followed and the project gained momentum only to suffer devastating legal and financial blows culminating in the loss of her intellectual property and her house. With no place to call home, Pat set out on a road trip. The much-needed change of scenery became a perspective-shifting project that eventually morphed into CancerRoadTrip. If she could find healing on the road, why couldn't she recreate that environment for others? But nothing is easy. Outside forces have, once again, forced Pat to idle in place, this time in the form of a travel-restricting pandemic. Episode 108. "We will get through this. It does require being innovative. It does require, you know, really, really being clear about what you want. But that's a beautiful thing because it allows you to focus on only that and not what you were told you should want." ~India Jackson, brand, marketing & visibility specialist India Jackson is in the business of giving companies and solo entrepreneurs permission to be themselves. As CEO of brand agency Flaunt Your Fire and host of a podcast by the same name, India busts people out of their marketing ruts by providing strategies to connect their inner motivations with their brand's external actions. “Visibility,” says India, “is a two-way street.” Without proper guidance, the vital connection between brand and audience can get wobbly. And that's during the best of times. Throw in a pandemic (a recession! social crisis!) and suddenly the entire foundation crumbles under fuzzy social media goals or tepid convictions or engagement oversights. As dire as these issues seem, they're fixable if the entity in question is willing to go deep. “Creating a connected community is a lot easier when you're able to go beyond the surface.” India's got tips to help us get started with tweaking our message or embarking on full scale introspective brand analysis, including simple tactical upgrades to try like a brilliant IG hack for keeping track of connections! Episode 107. I didn't have the words so I'm borrowing these shared by community members in She Podcasts. We stand with our sisters from the WOC Podcasters led by Danielle Desir and crafted by Tangia Renee. Their words below: PODCASTERS FOR JUSTICE CAMPAIGN Collectively, we have built engaged audiences that listen to our voices regularly, and with coordinated effort, we can combine OUR voices to take a STRONG stance against racism and police brutality. We serve many audiences, but we can speak with one voice. One voice that does not mince words and demands justice. We created this simple PSA for podcasters or any content creator to post and share in hopes that we can come together across digital spaces to support the work of activists on the front lines of change, who risk themselves daily to create a better world for us all. Please join us in using your voice to take a stand and encourage action at this critical time by issuing the following statement on your podcast or other digital platform(s): We are (podcasters/bloggers/youtubers/influencer/etc.) united to condemn the tragic murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and many many others at the hands of police. This is a continuation of the systemic racism pervasive in our country since its inception and we are committed to standing against racism in all its forms. We believe that to be silent is to be complicit. We believe that Black lives matter. We believe that Black lives are more important than property. We believe that we have a responsibility to use our platforms to speak out against this injustice whenever and wherever we are witness to it. In creating digital media we have built audiences that return week after week to hear our voices and we will use our voices to speak against anti-blackness and police brutality, and we encourage our audiences to be educated, engaged, and to take action. Episode 106. "Community is even more so important when people do feel disconnected physically. Episode 105. "Getting dressed is a conversation with ourselves before it's a conversation with anybody else." ~Nicole Otchy, personal stylist, branding consultant, podcaster What's your wardrobe style? That question can short circuit the finely-tuned minds of otherwise competent people. Throw in a pandemic with its whiplash-inducing pivot to online all the time meetings or events and you've got a recipe for closet calamity. Performed without context, all the recent Kondo-izing or late-night online buying binges can add up to a closetful of clothes but no strategy for creating outfits that project a sense of the person behind the brand. Enter Nicole Otchy, personal stylist, personal branding consultant, and host of The Self Styled Podcast, a show helping listeners unlock their personal style. Yes, before you say anything, it's Nicole's firm belief that everyone has style. Things get complicated, however, when confidence gets hijacked by chatter. Conversations around how women “should” dress are mired in all sorts of “rules” - for our body type, our age, our career path or industry. Everything's changed, seemingly overnight, and dressing can be an act of self-care right now. As the world shakes off its layers of pandemic pajamas, however, greater emphasis will be placed on virtual professional events and entirely revamped careers. Nicole also foresees drastic shifts in shopping habits and as well as a greater emphasis on societal wellbeing. In other words, if you haven't given style much thought, now might be a great time to revisit how you intend to style yourself and your brand for the future. Episode 104. "I will just reiterate to be kind to yourself and let's not continue to do grind culture right now. We don't have to be productive. And if you're not productive right now, you're doing it right." ~Sarah Buino, therapist, podcaster, speaker, founder Head/Heart Therapy Ready for some virtual therapy? Truthfully, I'm casting a side-eyed glance toward anyone who, at this point in the pandemic, answers, “Nah. I'm fine.” And this is why I'm not a therapist. But returning guest Sarah Buino, LCSW, CADC, CDWF, is and she's here to say it's fine if you're fine...for now. Whatever you need to do to support your mental health, to save your business, to care for your family, to get through these weird, exhausting days (weeks, months), is exactly what you should be doing. As a fellow content creator and podcast royalty in her field, Sarah's life on the other side of the mic hasn't changed all that much. At Conversations With a Wounded Healer, she continues to connect with practitioners of various modalities, discussing the parallel paths of healing the self while caring for clients. As host of Transforming Trauma, a podcast produced by The NARM Training Institute, she finds no shortage of topics to explore within the world of complex trauma. As the owner of Head/Heart Therapy, however, Sarah's on the frontlines of the tele-health battlefield. Given the haphazard response to the pandemic by some of our institutions (looking at you, health insurance, banks), she's cautiously optimistic that the masses will galvanize, especially around the subject of tele-health, and change is gonna bleepin' come! Until then, how about some tips from Sarah for preserving our mental health and a delicious smoothie recipe? Episode 103. "People are very reticent to pitch themselves... Don't let the fear of rejection hold you back from putting yourself out there when you know you can be helpful -- when you really feel that inside of you." ~Cher Hale, director and founder at Ginkgo Public Relations Raise your hand if you've experienced a new wave of creator impostor symptoms since shelter-in-place orders began. You're not alone. When crisis strikes - world-wide and well outside our control - the brain turns up the volume on negative self-talk, making it next to impossible to pitch ourselves. We wonder about our ability to serve our communities. We downplay our hard-fought experience. We worry about appearing insensitive. Stop it. Cher Hale, owner of Ginkgo Public Relations, says your message still matters - now more than ever. Her advice for confused creative imposters? Stay in your lane no matter how compelling a similar creative's 180º pivot appears. Whether that means shifting to daily Facebook Live postings or putting your business on pause, stay genuine. Ultimately, Cher reminds us that we've created something; we're experts at that! A crisis shouldn't radically alter our fundamental message or our ability to support the communities we've built. Episode 102. "I realized that when you do something with your hands or you are creative, you create something, you feel more satisfied, you feel more fulfilled." ~Ana Paz, visual artist, teacher & retreat facilitator Want to stave off shelter-in-place boredom and re-energize your spirit? Ana Paz, a Romanian artist living in Bodensee, Switzerland, says creating art during COVID-19 is the ultimate act of self-care. This episode isn't a study in productivity or even fine art. Instead, it's an invitation to return to something you once loved or engage in a new project. The medium isn't important. Nor are the results. It's all about the process, says Ana, a lesson she shared with students via multi-day artists' retreats across Europe prior to COVID-19. Now, the pandemic has severely limited her ability to host offline, especially in nearby Germany and Northern Italy, so she's taken her inspiring creativity virtual, teaching free workshops and posting replays on YouTube. That's not to say Ana hasn't felt the pull of a long bath or lazy afternoon of Netflix. She's given in to fluctuations in her mood and output, a direct result of pandemic fatigue. She's allowed herself the space to set aside goals in favor of recharging both physically and mentally. Eventually, though, Ana points out that everyone reaches their Netflix or social media consumption limit. That's when the urge to create strikes. When it does, she recommends that we ignore perfectionism in favor of connection to that driving force. Consuming other people's work is easy. Creating can feel difficult at first. Be kind to your art, follow your curiosity, and enjoy yourself. Get the full show notes and connect with Ana http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/102. P.S. Episode 101. "The one thing that I have been seeing is ‘I haven't saved up' and the guilt around that. ‘I don't have any emergency savings' and ‘I haven't built it up' or ‘Why did I get myself into all this debt?'...You need to let that go. Focus on the now and give yourself the grace that you're going to get through this." ~Jen Hemphill, certified financial counselor Somewhere between the stress of planning for tomorrow and the distractions of paying for today lies the sweet spot of financial health. Episode 100. "Go, explore one of the episodes and really go into that story and just, you know, come out of it feeling like you just made a new friend. Even though you may have never, you MAY never meet them, you may never message them, but at least you know the struggles or the victories of someone else, which you know, you never know how it'll affect you and kind of drive you or inspire you. So that's it. I feel that's, that's the power of podcasting. Good storytelling." ~Edwin Ruiz, Technical Director, The Creative Impostor Studios Happy 100! "I remember thinking that the title of this podcast was made just for me and remembered how soothing Andrea's voice was as a grounding element along with the background of mountains and farmland." ~Christina Dynamite, Podcast Listener, The Creative Impostor I am so happy to share with you both the voices of some listeners, who have been following The Creative Impostor for a while AND the voices of The Creative Impostor team (yep — i have a TEAM! behind the scenes and they are amazing humans.) But before we get there… I want to share the experience of getting listener feedback and HEARING your voice. I've been asking for MONTHS for listeners to choose an episode title from the past 5 years and send a voice recording to me telling me in just a few minutes how that particular episode or title impacted your creative life and work. I got a few responses - 3 to be exact. And each time an email popped into my inbox with the subject line “episode 100” I would inhale, smile, and then my palms would get a little sweaty. So I download the file and import it to my audio editing software. I see the visual waveform pop up on my screen and I click play. And it's like opening a completely unexpected gift that ends up being your favorite one — every single time. Episode 099. "And, of course, we know that futurizing is literally a recipe for anxiety. So, whenever we start wondering what we're going to do, and we're facing so many unknown variables, it's an impossible task, right? So we're setting ourselves up for constant agitation. The cure for that, of course, is to continue to come back into the present moment." ~Ellen Katz Leaving this episode here, in the productivity-hack and to-do list-free zone. How are you feeling? No, really. In between Zoom happy hours and virtual house parties, how much time have you taken to check in - with yourself? If the thought of sitting with all those feels makes you hyperventilate, you're not alone. That's why Ellen Katz, MS MFT, is back, to help us get emotionally sober. How? By gently talking us through why we're (rightly) feeling anxious and what we can do to coexist with our emotions in the time of COVID-19 and beyond. Take this opportunity to return to the present moment. Yeah, you've heard the expression before and, for good reason. It's wisdom passed down for millennia, a mantra in many forms found throughout the world's religions and spiritual practices. And, for some of us, it's ridiculously tricky to access when we need it most. Like now, when the world is bombarding our brains with discrepancies. People in masks. Too many people not in masks! No traffic noise. Too much traffic noise! The constant drip-drip-drip of disparities between what is normal and what has become the new normal is enough to trigger an overproduction of cortisol and other stress hormones. Admitting vulnerability calms our nervous system down enough to more clearly assess our situation and access solutions to ease our stress. Humans are built to solve problems but we're all feeling less capable right now. That's ok! We are, collectively, resilient beings. Not perfect. Not immune. Resilient. Ellen urges us to lean into that resilience by turning down the volume on our need to futurize all the problems. You only control your actions, your responses. Your inner wise person wants you to know that, in this moment, you are safe. Your feelings are valid and you can thrive alongside them in this new normal. Episode 098. "It is not the time to NOT send out that newsletter. It's not the time to take a break on Facebook Lives. This is the time to jump on and have live Q and A because it is about just reaching out... To be able to respond very quickly to couples and what they need because it's not only about the message, but how you respond to it." ~Ivy Summer Wedding planners are specialists at the art of pivoting. Sure, the timing for a venue to cancel or a cake maker to bail isn't always great but a seasoned planner generally has an ace up their sleeve ready to save the big day. At least that's the narrative played out in every 90s romcoms ever made about the industry - way back before shelter-in-place and social distancing reshaped in a hurry how, when, and if couples get married. Ivy Summer is a certified wedding planner and a former digital nomad who now runs her global empire from northern Greece. Like most of us, she's questioning how she can be of service to her clients while maintaining her own safety. Unlike many of us, Ivy already had a plan in the works. Her suggestions for managing a business during these unprecedented times and caring for your tribe are a mix of energetic optimism and forthright honesty. While she's hyper-focused on her clients right now - some of whom have lost venue deposits, others who have had to put off their big day for a year - Ivy is well aware that her mental health and the safety of her family are equally important. Connection remains her go-to coping strategy. Checking in with her followers via Instagram and hosting Facebook Q & A sessions keep the business running. Maintaining lines of communication with family and friends back home keeps her sane. Episode 097. "It's just interesting to me that you're suddenly seeing more in the media about the concept of gig economy...It's just like, man, if you talk to artists and musicians we know the gig economy. That's been a standard, that's our lives. We've lived that since the dawn of time...If they'd only talk to us, we could have told them how bad it's gonna be, how vulnerable everyone would be." ~Michele Thomas Good enough. That phrase has been playing on a loop lately. Maybe you've asked yourself the following questions about good enough: How much of that unpolished content is good enough to share now? How much social media posting is good enough to remind followers that you're there to help, but not overwhelm them (or you)? Whose contribution to society is good enough to earn them a decent living wage or housing stability or healthcare? Didn't think we'd go deep, huh? That's ok. This pandemic has laid bare myriad imbalances and forced many of us to reconsider the answers to weightier questions: Why is the only route to security through a traditional payrolled job? Why aren't the services or art that gig workers provide deemed good enough to earn them in place in the national conversation about income equality and similar protections? Michele Thomas is a Chicago-based jazz singer and voice teacher who knows what it means to gig. It was artists, after all, who created the original gig economy long before mobile apps co-opted the idea. Up until last month, Michele was busy hustling that gig life when her calendar suddenly fell apart thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak here in the US. The subsequent weeks have been a mixed bag of worry, optimism, introspective creative projects, and...worry. Beyond the logistics of where to perform now and how to deliver that sound, jazz musicians like Michele are grappling with how these emergency methods might forever change the genre itself. Without the hustle to keep her busy, Michele's had time to reflect on how much of her art and her happiness relies on her audience. She's also protective of that connection, deeply concerned about how gig workers and traditional employees fair after the pandemic. She hopes all the time spent sheltering in place consuming art and unable to support our local services will lead to a collective reckoning about who and what constitutes good enough. I PROMISE it's not as heavy as it sounds! This conversation is full of light, love and laughter. Listen to the end -- you'll be renewed. Episode 096. "I feel like it's easier for some of my clients to come closer to their audience and say, ‘Hey, this is hard for me to. I don't have all the answers. I'm not dealing with this in the perfect way. Let's figure it out together.'” ~Noel Bosco Add motives and messaging to the list of daily concerns that have gone haywire lately. My mental capacity is running near empty just trying to regulate my sleep pattern, my eating regimen, my emotional wellbeing… How about you? If you're a full-fledged business owner, content creator, or someone maintaining a side hustle, how do you position your content now in these "uncertain times"*? *Ugh! I strongly dislike using that term! If anyone has come across better phrasing, please share! For now, we're just gonna go with it. Noel Bosco is a copywriter working with B2B clients and non-profits. Her pragmatic advice is a solid reminder for any creative struggling to manage their message in the midst of crisis: put your audience first and raise the curtain on some of your own vulnerability. This is a unique time to be sure and most audiences are hungry for stability. Conversely, they're overwhelmingly willing to forgive you for stumbling over that initial Zoom attempt or an inaugural Instagram Live (and the good news here is that you'll only get better!) Triple points are also given to anyone thrown into a WFH situation with a spouse or roommate suddenly in residence 24/7. Or a child in tow. Or a cat who's suddenly discovered your laptop keyboard is the perfect place for naps. Leave capitalizing on the situation to faceless big-name players desperate to sell you insurance or a home alarm system. Instead, Noel suggests finding ways to be of service to your audience. Major crises are bound to test relationships. But, as Noel points out, the language of marketing and copywriting is always shifting, the core principles - making and nurturing connections - don't, even in uncertain times**. **Seriously, help me. Episode 095. “I always say to people that energy follows intention. So when you pray for someone or you have a good thought for someone, you send out that prayer, you send out that thought. We know that when we do that collectively and we're connected, there's so much good that can happen.” ~Tina Conroy Time for a bit of the obvious: stress and anxiety are two of life's constants. From minor aggravations to major worldwide meltdowns, what we lean on - physically, mentally, and emotionally - brings us comfort and, with any luck, relief. But what happens when your normal path to calm is blocked? How do you start a home practice? What do you do to supplement therapeutic work that normally takes place in an office or studio? Tina Conroy E-RYT, RMT is a modern healer who knows her way around the technical side of mind-body support. As host of The Intuitive Woman podcast, she explores the innate wisdom of the conscious and subconscious mind via solo episodes and chats with guests. As Director of Energy Healing and Reiki Master at The Center For Integrative Medicine in New York, she teaches yoga and oversees the reiki certification program. Offering so much virtual service in a time of great anxiety can come with real consequences if not managed correctly, compassionately. For someone whose work and spirit thrive on connection, I love that Tina's multi-platform approach to healing is a model for a new normal and a relief to anyone searching for virtual support. Episode 094. “It's okay to modify things. It doesn't need to always be business as usual. In fact, I would recommend to people, if you're really worried about how to show up, how to sell, how to market right now, just be giving... Be a giver.” ~Sami Gardner Life in the time of a pandemic. Whether you're brainstorming a complete personal website rebrand or nesting under a pile of bread-baking cookbooks, one thing is certain in these uncertain times: the world of work has been radically altered. How do creatives greet these changes? Where do they find new opportunities? Who can they turn to for help? Sami Gardner is a digital nomad, podcast host, and career specialist for the gig economy. With her guidance, thousands of professionals have developed their networks, reinvented their revenue streams, and generally recession-proofed their careers. With the current crisis grounding Sami to her family's home in Tucscon, AZ, she's taken the forced time-out to assess all aspects of her business before the next challenge hits - namely, a virus-prompted recession. She shares some pro-tips with The Creative Impostor that you can put into practice today, tomorrow, or whenever you've recouped enough stamina to look ahead. Sami balances maximizing this odd downtime with a version of self-care that fits her personality. Boxed wine and video games help her recharge. The bottom line is, while this isn't the perfect time to reinvent a business, it's the time we've been given. How can you make the most of it and stay sane in the process? If you need to take time out before you answer for a bubble bath or your favorite video game, that's okay, too. Episode 093. "If you think you need to move to a city to access the creative buzz, I think you're looking at the situation through the wrong lens... Geographically there's a revolution happening like across the world... and it's happening in every city every basement, like every street corner, every crusty little studio. It's a global revolution that's happening right now." ~Lucas Spivey Are you currently stuck inside, furiously learning the steps to the coronavirus shuffle? Join the club. The world-wide lockdown is forcing freelancers and creatives to pivot on regularly-scheduled content or scrap their trusty playbook altogether. So, what does a Creative Impostor do when the entire planet is forced into time out? She goes for a spin* in a souped-up, decommissioned ambulance with Lucas Spivey of Culture Hustlers and records a podcast about the future of art and, more importantly, getting paid for said art. *Full disclosure: She did NOT go for a spin during the quarantine! This episode was recorded about a year ago (yes, I know!) But the message, the spirit, the HOPE is full-on what creatives need to hear right now; a feel-good episode for when things don't feel so good. Lucas is a BFA MBA who's traveled to all 50 states (yes, even Hawaii) in his mobile incubator, capturing wisdom and stories from the country's hardworking, often unsung, creators. It's life-on-the-road as PhD. Seriously, he scrapped the formal experience of post-graduate school for a sometimes-sleeps-in-a-van existence. That multifunction studio on wheels van life coupled with his traditional educational forms the foundation for his virtual coaching program. So why this episode and why now? Because Lucas's enthusiasm for creators and the creative process is contagious (too soon in the midst of a pandemic?)And, his key pieces of advice have the power to shift the way you do and deliver your art. That may be a hard sell when we've been told to practice social distancing, when scoring a roll of toilet paper and coordinating a family check-in call are the new self-care rituals. But the shelter in place orders will eventually lift. When it does, maybe you'll have found fresh inspiration and designed a new normal way of creating. Episode 092. "Think of it [voice] as symbolic of many things about our central identity, let's say, and not really even symbolic but literally, how do we express ourselves day-to-day about who we are the most? I guess what I'm trying to say is that working on your voice can [be] a whole life-changing experience." ~Wendy Parman What do an opera soprano, a university lecturer, and a podcaster have in common? They're all vocal professionals! In fact, according to performer and voice teacher Wendy Parman, you're probably a vocal professional. Think about that for a moment: anyone who leans heavily on their voice, either to create art or do their job is a pro. Salesperson or singer. Teacher or actor. With that in mind, why are so many of us trying to muscle our voice into places it just doesn't want (or need) to go? If you're doing so because you don't feel like you deserve the right to occupy your space, listen up! You should fill your corner of the world to capacity. On your own vocal merits. Wendy's teaching and performing style is a refreshing take in the often harsh, anonymous world of online critiques - those knee-jerk, uninformed responses that inevitably land in YouTube comments, podcast reviews, and post-show Twitter feeds. Side note: if you've posted that kind of analysis in the past, Wendy's insight will give you pause before you do so again. She'll also arm you with deeper insight into why conditioning the uniqueness out of our voices (or anyone else's) is a recipe for inauthenticity. Unpacking that for a moment, Wendy cautions her clients against their desire to sound like someone else. That's a common fallback position for anyone not yet in command of their power, this belief that forcing Adele's dark, dramatic tones onto their own will make them more listenable, more successful. Listenability doesn't stem from mimicry. I hear you thinking, “But Andrea, isn't there a fine line between listenability (or castability if you're a performer) and standing on principle for my unique sound?” Glad you asked! Vocal styles (like Paris fashions) go in and out of favor. From flourishes to fry, there's always a current “it” sound. But if that's not your sound, don't force it! Wendy suggests learning how to harness control and foster good technique - think breathwork, warmups, and new-to-me cool-down exercises. Once you learn how sound is made, you'll get comfortable with what your voice has to say. Episode 091. "So, that work all the time productivity approach, it is very much embedded in our culture and our society. But it's not really how our nervous system is going to operate and be healthy. So, what can we do about that?" ~Brooke Seiz OK. I'm asking you to take a leap of faith with me in this episode. Don't worry, it's more an easy skip rather than a broad jump over shark-infested waters. Creative imposter syndrome begins in the gut. Wut? The gut?? Yes. I've got back-up on this one. Brooke Seiz, a board-certified functional nutrition practitioner, believes that an unhealthy gut not only affects our physical health but also taxes our mental well-being. Symptoms of a gut imbalance manifest in complex ailments – think leaky gut, chronic fatigue, adrenal dysfunction, IBS. Even low-grade instances of these diseases have the power to curtail our natural affinity toward play and exploration, self-expression and (managed) risk. The result is a diminished ability to work and create to our fullest potential and truest nature, the happy, healthy opposite of an imposter. Whew. That's a lot to digest (I couldn't resist!) Like, what even IS functional nutrition? Brooke's expertise and background in the arts come in handy when we're defining functional nutrition and discussing big concepts like the parasympathetic nervous system or the microbiome. But Brooke isn't advocating for nutritional change only. Play is a natural component of healing, that child-like desire to engage in an activity with no structured outcome other than to have fun. When was the last time you played at something? There's a lot to learn from Brooke's personal story of thwarted play, crippling stomach issues, and the realization that her authentic self was physically and emotionally impacted by her gut health. The biggest take-away from our discussion is this: there really is something to our gut feelings and butterflies in the stomach and queasy tummies. When and how we choose to listen to these warnings could mean the difference between the impostor and our happy, healthy authentic selves. Episode 090. "Don't podcast for results. Podcast because you're making something you believe in and make it about that. Make it about the art of what you're doing. Make it about something you believe that you want to put into the world and don't worry about feedback." ~Lisa Orkin, creator of Project WooWoo I'm calling it: my conversation with Lisa Orkin - voiceover actor, podcast host, writer, speaker (the list goes on and on) - is the best Creative Impostor episode of 2020 so far! I mean, it's got everything! A Back to the Future kind of open in which Lisa and I experiment with mental time travel. Humorous name-dropping. Life advice you can put into practice woven throughout. Tension! Drama! Comedy! (all the elements of selling a compelling story, by the way) Oh, and Lisa tosses in an anecdote about auditioning for work only to have the producers lament that they'd prefer her father (famed voiceover actor Dick Orkin) for the role… if only he weren't dead. Talk about an imposter syndrome pile-on! See. I told you: best episode of 2020 so far. But beyond the comedy (did I mention that Lisa's a veteran improv performer as well?), what stands out to me about this episode is its optimism. Lisa has faith in her ability not only to craft and tell her story (or, in her case, stories), she has faith that someone wants to listen. And, after nurturing many projects simply for her own enjoyment, she truly does believe that, by doing something you love long enough, you'll find your people and they'll find you. If that sentiment sounds too optimistic for you, then you need this show now more than ever. It is, after all, the best show of 2020 so far. P.S. If you've never listened to Project WooWoo, I recommend the episode with Madame Zoltair (it's my favorite!)
