Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

(Photograph courtesy of Ella Pravetz, and used with permission.) How can twenty-first century technology teach kids to love to read? Living Popups CEO Cheryl Bayer has an imaginative and entertaining answer. Her Santa Monica-based content platform/media company, Living Popups, has enhanced a beloved classic, The Boxcar Children, with augmented reality animations.  Currently, Living Popups has illustrated the first four books in the series with AR, with more to come. When young readers pick up one of these volumes, the four siblings pop up, through the magic of AR, on the cover or the page.  Throughout the story, they'll appear to interact, comment and ask questions. And during the coronavirus pandemic, Living Popups is offering free resources to teachers and homeschooling parents. They're also at work on an AR app geared towards mental health.  And middle-school classes can look forward to seeing more classic literature where characters come to life through augmented reality experiences. As covered in our 2018 interview, Living Popups is all about bringing stories to life.  Their previous apps have included museum experiences where "Leonardo da Vinci" talks about his work, and the world's first AR episodic series shown during a live event: VRLA 2018, in Lost Angeles. Cheryl talked about Living Popups' work, the experience of animating The Boxcar Children with augmented reality, and the ways Living Popups is helping educators and parents through the coronavirus pandemic. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How storytelling first captured Cheryl's imagination; What Cheryl and her team are doing to help promote literacy through augmented reality; How the AR app helps with reading retention; What's available for teachers in underprivileged areas; What Living Popups will have available for middle-school students in the future; How teachers can take students on a "virtual field trip" to see the creative process; How Living Popups is planning future lessons in geography and history through AR; A preview of an upcoming mental-health AR app which will be available in the fall; How Cheryl and her team made the 1924 classic book relevant to today's students; Some of the reactions to the new AR apps; Cheryl's vision for helping more teachers and students during the pandemic; How to get involved and support her efforts, if you're in a position to help; A preview of a new product, soon to be coming out for the pandemic; What an average workday is like, for Cheryl and her animators; A preview of some future AR projects.

Having a showroom can be an amazing calling card and home base for interior designers. But is it worth the overhead and the headaches? On today’s episode, Cheryl Kees Clendenon answers all your questions about showrooms. Cheryl Kees Clendenon is the owner and lead designer of In Detail Interiors on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Her innovative work has earned her firm more awards than any other firm on the Gulf Coast, and Cheryl is also an accomplished business coach to interior designers. On today’s episode she talks about why she opened a showroom, how it’s benefited her business, and convinces Darla she should open her own (if she can get Natalie to agree). What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [1:25] Mel Gibson has nothing on Darla [9:27] The nitty, not the gritty, on showrooms [11:15] The research you need to do [12:42] Getting the best pricing possible [17:22] Striking deals with vendors [19:24] You have to be capitalized [23:45] Why Cheryl does not believe discounts [30:30] How Cheryl communicates pricing with clients [36:14] Will a showroom get you more clients? A customer asks you how much something might cost, and then they scour the internet looking for a better price. But Cheryl tells Darla and Natalie that part of her showroom’s business model is to partner with vendors to showcase their wares in exchange for discount prices. So, as she says, her firm doesn’t have to worry about getting shopped because “we shop ourselves.” Cheryl also immediately dispels one of the biggest concerns about having a showroom: Suddenly finding yourself in the retail business. If you’re not interested in having open doors and customers wandering through, you can do what she did it at first: Close the doors. By being by-appointment-only, Cheryl was able to maintain her showroom without having any of the trappings of being a retail store. Setting up a showroom takes time Before she opened her showroom, Cheryl said she spent a year and a half researching what lines she would carry. It can take a lot of prep work to find the right vendors, strike deals with them, convince them to take you seriously. Also, as Cheryl said, it can take a long time for your showroom to take off, so you have to be ready and willing to withstand that wait. And beyond that, doing this takes money. You may be running your interior design business out of a home office, or doing everything you can to lower your overhead. If you want to open a showroom, as Cheryl says, you have to be capitalized. . Cheryl Strayed never planned on giving advice professionally and doesn't love a guru, but she agrees with Anna Brones that everyone has wisdom to bestow upon others. The key is to seek as much as you share. When our friend, the artist and writer Anna Brones offered to chat with Cheryl Strayed at Mountain Film in Telluride for She Explores, the answer was a resounding yes. Anna is working on an ongoing paper cut series called, "Women's Wisdom Project" that has evolved from simple portraits with quotes to full conversations and write ups. This episode is an extension of that concept, and offers us the opportunity to contemplate the wisdom we receive from women in our everyday lives. Women Featured in this Episode: Cheryl Strayed and Anna Brones Hosted by Gale Straub In this episode you'll hear About the evolution of Anna's "Women's Wisdom Project" How Cheryl is an "accidental self help writer" Why advice giving should be a horizontal exchange vs. a top down one The importance of seeking out wisdom in those close to you The influence Cheryl's mom had on her life, in particular as it relates to seeking out beauty in the every day Why kindness and vulnerability are often underrated in our culture Why Anna believes the most revolutionary wisdom is often the most basic How Cheryl sometimes feel like she doesn't 'look like' the type of person to write 'Wild.' That Cheryl is both a 49 year old mom, but also an avid wilderness athlete Why Cheryl is excited to get older How to feel better about saying "no" The role fear plays in stepping outside and creating art The overlaps we all have with the wisdom Cheryl shares How through her writing, Cheryl has told the truth about real life (whether venturing into the wilderness, grieving, or setting your life back on course) and made people feel less alone Sponsored by Escape Campervans and Deuter Resources: Cheryl Strayed: Portfolio, Instagram, and Twitter Anna Brones: Portfolio, Instagram, and Twitter Wild, Tiny Beautiful Things, Dear Sugars podcast Women's Wisdom Project Best American Travel Writing 2018 Learn more on She-Explores.com Join the conversation in our She Explores Podcast Facebook Group Sponsors & Codes -Escape Campervans: Use code 'SHEEXPLORES20' for 20% off. Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

"Showing (is) better than talking," says Living Popups CEO Cheryl Bayer. And that's exactly what she and her team are doing. Living Popups is an interactive augmented-reality platform and media company.    The products Cheryl and company produce are episodic AR features.  And these projects, created with humor and imagination, have a number of purposes. For example, "Leonardo da Vinci" might fly into frame on a gyrocopter, in a museum.   Or, in an educational application, villainous pig "Napoleon" might pop out of the cover of George Orwell's classic "Animal Farm".  (He'll offer his views on dictatorship--and not surprisingly, he considers it a good thing!  However, he does think it's in need of a few "tweaks".) In addition, readers of Charlie Fink's Metaverse: An AR-Enabled Guide to VR & AR, get to see Living Popups' work firsthand throughout the pages.  The book festures an episodic augmented-reality series, starring the author's avatar and his two roommates.  This particular series, according to Living Popups' website, garnered a nomination for a 2018 Auggie Award, for "Best Art or Film".   (Here is the link to our earlier interview with Charlie, about his new book.) Best of all, at VRLA 2018, in the Los Angeles Convention Center in May, Cheryl and her crew introduced "The Aug-mentors".  This was the first-ever AR episodic series to be shown during a live event! Cheryl, who is both an entertainment and education professional, talked about her background, the creation of Living Popups and her experiences with the Aug-mentors at VRLA 2018. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear: What first sparked Cheryl's interest in working in the entertainment industry; How she first began working with AR as a means of storytelling; How Charlie Fink's book, Charlie Fink's Metaverse, became Living Popups' first AR project; Cheryl's experience with "The Aug-Mentors", as she and her staff presented it during VRLA 2018; What you'll see, when you watch "The Aug-Mentors" (and how to get the first nine episodes if you didn't attend VRLA!); The essential element involved, in creating augmented reality; The creative process behind Charlie, Ripley and Wade, the three augmented-reality characters in the episodes of Charlie Fink's Metaverse, as well as the characters in The Aug-Mentors; How Cheryl's work with her award-winning kids' enrichment facility, Creative Space, expanded into what Living Popups is doing in the educational field; The teachers Cheryl remembers, who inspired her most; A preview of the educational products Living Popups will be releasing, in September 2018 and January 2019; Her advice, for fellow innovators.

After blending her talents with her entrepreneurial drive, she now shares interviewing and storytelling skills with business owners who want to use video or media to tell the stories of their companies. Cheryl knows how to help entrepreneurs be seen as experts in their fields and helps them connect with clients and customers through video and public relations.    TWEET: “Learn to share your story while you build your #Authority!” @CherylTan   Life’s Changing Journey We all know that we don’t always end up doing what we “think” we will. There is value in being willing to change your path and find your voice. This is what Cheryl had to do to end up in the field of broadcast journalism. She shares how she learned from others and learned about connecting with people through stories. The key elements are listening and being curious. Even though her path didn’t lead where she expected, Cheryl found a way to blend her innate curiosity, her love for writing, and her passion for literature into a “news job.” TWEET: “Your WHY will come out quite naturally when you share what you do.” @CherylTan   Testing the Waters Do you know the feeling of leaping into something new? Cheryl describes her personal experience as “dipping her toe” into a new path. She began asking business associates if they needed help with newsletters or media and was surprised when her offers were well-received. Soon enough, she was able to pick a date at which she would go “all in.” That was over two years ago—a time period fraught with journeys, pivots, and changes. What is the secret to making it work? Cheryl says that you need the courage to leave all you’ve ever known and have faith in yourself. She shares how she now serves people in a different way and empowers them to tell their stories. TWEET: “People are more open to you when you start by offering help.” @CherylTan   Asking for Help Do you ask for help when you need it? Most of us don’t. Cheryl had to look for people who knew “a thousand times more” than she did and tap into their expertise. If you look, you will find them—those who had left something behind to look for something else. Cheryl warns that these “helpers” don’t have to have the same exact situation as you do to be helpful. The passion to help others is the common factor. TWEET: “It’s more than OK to ask for help.” @CherylTan GUEST RECOMMENDATION: “Take action. Do ONE thing to move you forward.
