Sometimes a kid can be the best example of a dream chaser. This is certainly true of my guest today. His family epitomizes what it means to chase your dreams, as each one of them works hard to pursue their passions. I think you’ll find today’s interview refreshing and inspiring. Travis Wolfe, Jr. is a 13-year-old actor, hip hop and breakdancer, and host. After booking his very first audition for a 6ABC News promo, Travis knew he was destined to be an actor. Within five years, Travis landed the role of “Dele” in the CBS series Bob Hearts Abishola, and he’s been featured in shows like Grownish, The Neighborhood, and Laff Mob’s Laff Tracks. He also has a recurring role on Season 3 of Raven’s Home as “Lil Lo Lo.” Besides acting and dancing, Travis uses motivational speaking to encourage other young people to follow their dreams and pursue their passions. What it takes to succeed as an actor What do you think it takes to succeed as an actor? It’s not as easy as walking into your first audition and riding the easy train to sudden stardom. Travis says that most people don’t realize what a kid goes through in their journey to become a child actor. Putting a show together takes a lot of preparation and dedication from many people besides just the actors. Travis makes many sacrifices for his acting career, but he says it doesn’t feel like a job since he loves what he does. Besides his acting work on the Warner Brothers set, he has several hours of schoolwork to do every day.  TWEET: Most people don’t realize what a kid goes through in their journey to become a child actor. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams Learning from each experience Do you think most actors experience overnight success? Travis says that it rarely happens that way in the acting profession. He started off doing small parts in commercials and student films, and this path seems to be a normal rite of passage for most actors. Each role is another level to help you get the feel of what goes into the production process. Many actors have stories like Travis---of working hard to achieve their dreams. An interesting fact about Travis’ dreams is that he’d love to be a stand-up comedian someday.  TWEET: Each role is another level to help you get the feel of what goes into the production process. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams What Travis enjoys the most about acting What do you think is the best thing about acting? You might think it’s the paycheck, but that’s not what Travis says. What he loves most is the opportunity to interact with other people and form relationships with them. Actors don’t just arrive on the set and act in their scenes. Travis explains that he spends time connecting with other actors to make the relationships seem real. He loves to find friends and mentors in his set family at each project. As far as future writing or directing, Travis follows the advice given to him by Mario Van Peebles, who told him to learn to be his own boss. This means learning to write, direct, and produce so that he can work for himself and have more control over his career.  TWEET: Learn to be your own boss. @traviswolfejr #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Keep going. There will always be people who tell you that you can’t do it. Stay faithful, and you’ll get there.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:44] The role of Travis’ parents in supporting his endeavors [4:43] Cultivating “Dele’s” Nigerian accent [6:32] What it takes to be a child actor [8:55] The evolution of roles [10:25] Is there something else for Travis? Visa processing can be tricky business. Although IRCC has taken significant measures to streamline the process and make it easier for us to file applications online and through the various processing centres, inevitably efficiency of process runs into a wall.....for some of our clients, it can be a BRICK WALL. In this episode, Canadian immigration lawyer Christy Jones joins me to discuss some of the more challenging scenarios she has had to work through and together we share some strategies for helping you navigate those quirky cases we all seem to get from time to time. [smart_track_player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/canadianimmigrationpodcast/CIP_S3_E5.mp3" social="true" social_twitter="true" social_facebook="true" social_gplus="true" social_linkedin="true" ] As a young immigration lawyer, the best decision I ever made was to join the Canadian Bar Association's National Immigration section. Why? Because it is probably the most collegial group of professionals in the country. There was always someone willing to share their past experience dealing with tricky situations. This willingness to share gave me access to a wealth of experience that allowed me the ability to quickly climb the steep immigration learning curve essential to practicing in this ever changing area of the law. In this Episode of the Canadian Immigration Podcast, I was joined my immigration lawyer Christy Jones who practices out of her firm in Toronto, to share some insight on the world of visa office process from a practical perspective. Anyone can follow the IRCC guides and document checklists essential for filing a complete application. However, what do you do when things start to go off the rails and there is no instruction guide on how to deal with it? This episode is devoted to a number of case scenarios where Christy and I share our thoughts on how best to deal with them. Our listeners will quickly discover that despite our many years of immigration practice, and our relatively consistent approach to most situations, there are times when our approaches to resolving an issue can be quite different. I guess this is what makes immigration so challenging, and yet so enjoyable....there is always more than one way to solve an immigration problem. Here is a short list of the scenarios we discussed in this episode: Scenario 1: Employee requiring a Work Permit, with one DUI is denied entry to Canada, and advised to seek a TRP through a visa office before attempting to re-enter. His intended position in Canada renders him eligible for expedited processing under the GSS. Scenario 2: A GSS eligible application is to be prepared under the intra company transfer (specialized knowledge) provisions, but is not terribly strong. The applicant is visa exempt, but you are not sure whether an officer at the port of entry will agree with the specialized knowledge argument to be presented and the applicant has a long flight to Canada. You decide applying at the POE is too risky. Should you apply online to be processed under the GSS or submit the application to the IMWU for an opinion? Scenario 3: Applicant with a Work Permit approved under the GSS arrives at the port of entry. The work permit is issued indicating that a medical exam is required within 30 days, however the applicant had not resided in a designated country, and there was no medical conducted toward Work Permit approval. Scenario 4: An applicant eligible for a Work Permit exemption under the GSS is not issued a Visitor Record at the port of entry upon arrival. Leneen Faith is a wife, mom of three, elementary school teacher, author, and CEO. Despite her full plate, she continues chasing her dream of inspiring children to be kids of character! The dream nearest and dearest to her heart is her children’s brand, The Adventures of Peacebe and the Heartwatch. Peacebe is currently an 8-book character education series that’s already in 20 schools. However, Leneen’s dream is for her brand to become a cartoon on a major cartoon network. Leneen is a firm believer that you can never be too busy to chase your dream and fulfill your purpose. TWEET: “Learn ways to inspire #children to have good #character with #LeneenFaith” Chasing the Dream How is a dream born? Dreams come in different ways to different people, but Leneen says her dream came as an idea that “popped into” her head way back in 2005. She wrote out her first Peacebe story, but then shelved the idea for FIVE years. She knew her inspiration was to teach kids about character through her writing, so she persevered until her idea became an 8-book series that teaches that “it’s cool to be a kid with character and values.” TWEET: “I want to teach kids that it’s cool to have #character.” #LeneenFaith Taking the Next Step Once you have grabbed hold of your dream, what do you DO with it? Leneen knew it would take action on her part to see the growth of her dream. She took a year off from teaching to knock on doors and talk to school principals about getting her series into schools. Her persistence paid off, as the series is now used in 20 schools! The dream doesn’t stop there, as Leneen admits she sometimes let fear get in the way of growth. The most important step is to STICK WITH IT! She now plans another year of hiatus from teaching to market the series to more schools and more avenues. She is going after it ALL! TWEET: “This time around, I’m going to do it a little bit better.” #LeneenFaith Chasing the Dream WITH your Family Who can you rely on for support in chasing your dream? Leneen turns to her family, especially her brother David, who partners with her in illustrating her books. Being raised by a single mom, Leneen and her five siblings were taught the value of a good attitude, hard work, and waiting. Leneen says there is no one else she would want to “do this” with besides her family.  TWEET: “There’s no substitute for a good attitude and hard work.” #LeneenFaith Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“You have to realize that your dream is bigger than you. My guest today is Anthony Rice, with whom I’ve been friends for a long time. He’s been creating art his whole life, with the female form being his muse. His passions have included many forms of art, but his recent craze centers around photography. Anthony has taken body painting to a new level with his “Transflections,” a digital mix of reflections and transformations that create other-wordly images, with each image being a unique mix of form, shapes, and color that can never be recreated. Join me to hear more of his story and his unusual artistry. TWEET: “Learn how @aricephoto is making his living from his #art and pushing his #creative boundaries!”  What’s YOUR superpower? Have you ever thought about what your superpower is? Anthony explains how he pinpointed his superpower as being the natural instinct required to “figure things out.” He uses the example of how he created his first website back in 1996, when NO ONE knew how to do that! He says the key is to stay focused and keep at it until that light bulb moment happens. TWEET: “#Art takes a long time to be able to live off of it and put a roof over your head.” @transflexions   Don’t be afraid of something NEW! Are you afraid when it comes to trying something new? Anthony explains his hopes for the future of his “Transflections,” with 3D intricate designs. He wants to do animation and morph the designs. He admits that he still has a lot to learn, but knows that this is where his future is headed, as he studies, does research, and learns more about the technique. TWEET: “Seeing that image on the wall that’s really nice, is my #reward.” @transflexions   Where to focus next: Are you an artist or entrepreneur who needs to figure out that NEXT focus? Anthony knows his next steps are in promoting his work on social media and building his brand. He’s done the research and knows he has to get his name out there among the stiff competition. He has a goal to get more name recognition for A.Rice Photography and become a trending artist.    Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Be true to the idea or dream. Have tunnel vision, even amidst life’s changes. Allow your dream to morph into whatever it needs to be.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:50] The way I met Anthony [3:42] Anthony’s background in computers [6:25] His “day job” at Apple vs. his passion for art [7:35] The focus on photography [8:40] Love for the art of creation [10:10] Anthony’s signature medium? Cheryl Tan knows the power of stories in connecting people. She’s been a broadcast journalist in GA and VA, with 20+ years in the TV news business. After blending her talents with her entrepreneurial drive, she now shares interviewing and storytelling skills with business owners who want to use video or media to tell the stories of their companies. Cheryl knows how to help entrepreneurs be seen as experts in their fields and helps them connect with clients and customers through video and public relations.    TWEET: “Learn to share your story while you build your #Authority!” @CherylTan   Life’s Changing Journey We all know that we don’t always end up doing what we “think” we will. There is value in being willing to change your path and find your voice. This is what Cheryl had to do to end up in the field of broadcast journalism. She shares how she learned from others and learned about connecting with people through stories. The key elements are listening and being curious. Even though her path didn’t lead where she expected, Cheryl found a way to blend her innate curiosity, her love for writing, and her passion for literature into a “news job.” TWEET: “Your WHY will come out quite naturally when you share what you do.” @CherylTan   Testing the Waters Do you know the feeling of leaping into something new? Cheryl describes her personal experience as “dipping her toe” into a new path. She began asking business associates if they needed help with newsletters or media and was surprised when her offers were well-received. Soon enough, she was able to pick a date at which she would go “all in.” That was over two years ago—a time period fraught with journeys, pivots, and changes. What is the secret to making it work? Cheryl says that you need the courage to leave all you’ve ever known and have faith in yourself. She shares how she now serves people in a different way and empowers them to tell their stories. TWEET: “People are more open to you when you start by offering help.” @CherylTan   Asking for Help Do you ask for help when you need it? Most of us don’t. Cheryl had to look for people who knew “a thousand times more” than she did and tap into their expertise. Today’s guest is Frank J. Sileo, PhD. He’s a NJ licensed psychologist and the Founder and Executive Director of The Center for Psychological Enhancement in Ridgewood.  In his practice, Frank works with children, adolescents, families and adults.  Since 2010, he has been consistently recognized as one of NJ’s top kids’ doctors.  He is an author of five children’s books, including “Sally Sore Loser:  A Story about Winning and Losing.” That book was a Gold Medal recipient of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award.  His fifth children’s book,m “Don’t Put Yourself Down in Circus Town:  A Story about Self-Confidence” was just released in February of 2015.  Dr. Sileo is chasing his dreams by helping people deal with the problems life throws their way - from children to adults. You’ll hear his story on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: A successful psychologist and children’s author, on this episode of #ChasingDreams How a successful psychologist began writing children’s books. Dr. Frank Sileo liked to write when he was younger but as his career developed he lost the time and reason behind the writing. When he began working with children in his psychology practice be noticed that the power of stories and some of his therapy modalities geared around storytelling were powerful ways to help children sort out their feelings and receive help. That’s when he got the idea to write books for children that taught about important issues in their lives. His books have been well received and many children and parents have told him the great benefit they have been. You can hear how he went about being published and what he hopes his books will accomplish, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. What did it take to become a published children’s author? There are many popular answers to a question like this - dedication, hard work, talent, etc. - and none of them are any less true in Dr. Frank Sileo’s case, but he adds the quality of persistence to the mix. He was determined to get his books published because he knew the good they could do for many children, so he kept sending out manuscripts and making contact with publishers until he found one who would publish his work. If you’re a Dream Chaser who’s eager to have your own writing published, Frank’s story could give you a great shot of encouragement, so be sure to listen. TWEET: What it took to become a successful children’s author, on this episode of #ChasingDreams The serious lack of self-confidence in our culture. It’s hard to say what the source of our self-confidence crisis is, but it’s very evident that it exists. Adults, as well as children, seem plagued with a lack of confidence in their abilities. Dr. Frank Sileo deals with the confidence issues people struggle with in his psychology practice every day. He believes that with the right help everyone can overcome a low or sagging self-confidence to become a blessing to the world around them. In this episode of Chasing Dreams Dr. Sileo shares his thoughts on the difference that every person can make to their family, friends, and the world if they can find the strength to confidently be who they’ve been made to be. A recommendation for all you Dream Chasers: Journaling. One of the tools that Dr. Frank Sileo uses in his psychology practice that he believes can be of great benefit to every person is the practice of journaling. It’s an opportunity to unscramble the millions of thoughts you have everyday, getting them out on paper so you can look at them and process what they mean. Dr. Frank recommends that you do not editorialize or censor yourself when you journal, but that you just write. As a famous minister once said, “Thoughts disentangle themselves when they flow from the lips or fingertips.” Dr. Frank couldn’t agree more. JOCELYN: Hey y'all! You're listening to an Expert Q&A with S&J. Today's expert is paid traffic specialist, Rick Mulready of rickmulready.com. Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us, each week, as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down, by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. SHANE: What's going on guys? Welcome back to this week's Expert Q&A. We are super excited to have back on the show, one of my favorite online marketers; he is the paid traffic expert, Rick Mulready. Rick, welcome back man. RICK: Thanks guys, good to be back. SHANE: Rick is the expert we pick on the most too and when we bring him on the show, we don't tell him what we're going to ask him, we don't give him any prep time, we're just like, “Yeah, we'll talk to you about one o'clock tomorrow.” So Jocelyn, give Rick his question for the first time today. JOCELYN: All right, here we go. This question is from Tony Romala, I hope I said that right Tony. Tony says, “I hear you guys talk a lot about Facebook advertising for paid adverts.” SHANE: He must be from Briton; we got a British guy going on here. JOCELYN: We love our international audience. It says, “Do you ever spend money on other paid traffic and if so, where else can you pay for advertising to get good traffic to your website? Is Facebook always the best?” SHANE: This is a very interesting question; we've spent money on Twitter, Facebook and sparingly on Google for keywords. So we've been kind of researching this ourselves, testing the waters; I know you're big into Facebook, I know you started – you basically grew your audience on Facebook ads but I know you talk a lot about other places too. Where should people be spending their money? I mean, everyone talks about Facebook but gosh; there are so many other platforms. Where are good places to spend money on advertising, and like what reason would you go away from Facebook which is such a good profit generator? RICK: I actually would not go away and of course I'm biased, but I really wouldn't go away from Facebook. Now, when it comes to paid traffic, it's all about testing. So you just have to be testing different platforms and you know, Facebook, there's almost 1.4 billion people on Facebook now, almost a billion of which are on there every single day. I mean, your target audience is on there, regardless of what niche you're in, or if you're B2B or B2C, your audience is going to be on there in some fashion. It all comes down to targeting and what your offer is, and having what that – having a clear plan of what that strategy is there. So I would recommend definitely if you're not already checking out Facebook ads, do test there. But for the other platforms, it really comes down to what aligns most with your business. Outside of Facebook ads, I'm probably most excited about two things: number one, retargeting and you mentioned that you guys have done, you know, some Google from a keyword perspective but you can also do really cool retargeting from Google's perspective. You can do it in a couple of different ways. So for example, if you have a YouTube video and you have your AdWords accounts set up and now if you ask me how to do this,

JOCELYN: Hey y'all! You're listening to an Expert Q&A with S&J. Today's expert, Josh Bauerle of cpaonfire.com Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. Join us, each week, as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down, by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. SHANE: What's going on guys, welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Q&A with S&J. We have another Expert Q&A for you guys today; we have an awesome guest on, his name is Josh Bauerle, and he is from cpaonfire.com. Josh, welcome to the program. JOSH: Thank you, glad to be back. SHANE: And you may remember Josh, we had him in a long episode talking about running his online business. His wife was on with him, a great episode, we'll put that on the show notes and today we have him on to answer a tax question because Jocelyn and I are scared to death to answer anything about accounting and taxes. JOCELYN: And for good reason. SHANE: For good reason, okay? So Jocelyn, do you have a question for Josh? JOCELYN: Yes, and it is from Preston, and Preston is from graphicdesignblender.com, and says, “Hey guys, you all are so inspiring. Congratulations on all the success; I have a question for you, one of the biggest fears I have faced from quitting my job is losing our insurance. How did you guys bridge that gap? Also, will buying private health insurance save me anything on taxes? Can I write that off?” SHANE: And this was a huge question that we had too because we were teachers, the State was basically – our jobs were paying for our insurance and we had no clue how this would impact us or the taxes. So josh, why don't you tell Preston a little bit about that and how switching to private insurance can impact what he pays on taxes. JOSH: Absolutely, and you guys have been much better experts at the part about getting private insurance, but I'll go over the tax benefits here. So, this is actually one area that is actually a huge benefit to be an entrepreneur. So typically, if you are going to get private insurance, the only way there can be a tax deduction is to write them off in what they call ‘itemized deductions' and medical expenses are super-hard to take as an itemized deduction. Basically in the simplest terms possible, they are going to reduce it by 10% of your income, and then you can only take the amount over that. So, if you made 100,000 dollars, they would immediately take off 10000 dollars of your insurance costs and then you can only take the amount over top of that. So that's if you are an employee. As an entrepreneur, if you have a business that makes money, you can write off those insurance costs against the revenue in your business, all right? So, let's say that you made the same 100,000 dollars, as an entrepreneur you paid 20,000 dollars in insurance, and now it's gonna look like you made 80,000 dollars instead of 100,000. SHANE: This will save you a fortune really, ain't it? JOSH: It is and one key here to remember though is that's if you made money in your business. So if you are showing a loss in your business, you are not going to be able to write that off. SHANE: Wow, so you can't just start a random business and not make a dime, and actually claim anything for your health insurance stuff. JOSH: Exactly,
