In this episode, Dr. Ben Lynch joins me to explore the crucial role of the MTHFR gene, which generates the most active form of folate in our bodies, methylfolate. Dr. Lynch highlights how essential methylation is—a process supported by methylfolate—that impacts key functions like DNA repair, detoxification, and neurotransmitter production. We delve into the harmful impacts of folic acid, a synthetic folate, especially for those with MTHFR gene variants. Dr. Lynch presents compelling reasons to avoid folic acid and instead choose natural folate from foods or supplements with methylfolate. Additionally, we discuss the link between MTHFR variants and mental health, noting how methylation imbalances can contribute to mental health issues and the need to maintain proper homocysteine levels for mental well-being. Ninka & Dr Mensah debunking MTHFR and gene testing. I am a licensed gene testing DNA practitioner and I am here to tell you that these tests are bad. I used to take and recommend methylated vitamins. I also used to go to Ben Lynch's conferences. I burned my DNA practitioner certificate because it is worthless. The MTHFR test and the methylated supplements and diet advice given to people by practitioners who use can be dangerous. Unfortunately people still use and believe in this information. I have to reveal this because it is especially dangerous to children with autism symptoms, mood swings, tantrums and for their mothers as well. If your practitioner uses MTHFR tests for methylation, to recommend diets or supplements - RUN! It's a massive red flag if your autism practitioner, dietician or naturopath is using gene tests like MTHFR and COMT tests to recommend or sell supplements. Is is dangerous. And it will make so many children (and adults) worse. In this video Ninka-Bernadette Mauritson from Barefoot Autism Warriors and Dr Albert Mensah from Mensah Medical debunk the MTHFR myth, the truth behind the trend, the horrific side consequences (such as increased risk for cancer, severe anxiety, depression and violent aggression and infertility). Unfortunately the MHTFR myth is spreading like wildfire again by health influencers. The MTHFR test is bad science. It is a misconception and it is WRONG. These are the words from Dr Albert Mensah from Mensah Medical in Chicago is an expert in autism, mental health disorders. In today's episode, Dr. Lynch and I discuss the significance of the MTHFR gene, which is responsible for producing the most active form of folate in our bodies, known as methylfolate. Dr. Lynch emphasizes the importance of methylation, a process that methylfolate supports, which is crucial for various bodily functions including DNA repair, detoxification, and neurotransmitter synthesis. A significant portion of our conversation revolves around the detrimental effects of folic acid, a synthetic form of folate that can actually worsen health issues for those with MTHFR variants. Dr. Lynch provides compelling evidence on why we should avoid folic acid and opt for natural food sources of folate or supplements with methylfolate. We also touched upon the relationship between MTHFR variants and mental health. Dr. Lynch shares how imbalances in methylation can lead to mental health issues and the importance of maintaining optimal levels of homocysteine for mental well-being. Tune in now to learn more! In this episode, we discuss the importance of delegations of authority in reducing reliance on the clinic owner and improving decision-making processes. Ben talks about how delegation of authority allows for clear identification of who can make specific decisions within the clinic.By documenting the responsibilities and authority of each role, the clinic owner can create a more structured and purposeful decision-making process, which helps to reduce overwhelm and ensures that important decisions are made within established parameters. It also emphasizes the need for accountability and reporting back to the clinic owner or relevant stakeholders.Quotes03:04 - "A delegation of authority schedule sets out the different functional areas of your business and allows you to create the clarity as a specific example, the dollar value and perhaps criteria or under what circumstances a decision could be made without any external advice or authority given."04:50 - "There's always the trade-off of making things more complex and having too much structure that bottlenecks."06:52 - "The delegations of authority is such a key policy and then process off the back of it to reduce the decision-making reliance on you or any particular person."07:50 - "Delegation of authority, a really key thing for you to do to scale up as you grow your clinic, to reduce a reliance on you or any particular person."Timestamps00:00 Intro01:08 Importance of delegations of authority02:00 Examples of delegations of authority03:55 Structure of a delegation of authority04:50 Finding the right balance of structure05:34 Emphasis on budgeting with delegations of authority06:28 Grouping decisions under umbrella terms06:52 Delegated authority versus abdicated authority07:15 Importance of accountability loopConnectInstagramFacebookLinkedInYouTube If you found this episode valuable, don't forget to give us a thumbs up, share, comment, and give us your ratings on iTunes, Spotify and Stitcher. This week on ReInvent Healthcare, I tackle Histamines. I explore its underlying causes, symptoms, and how functional medicine offers a holistic approach to address this complex issue. Join me as I navigate the intricate pathways of histamine metabolism and discover evidence-based strategies to restore balance and promote overall well-being. Listen to the full episode to learn more. IN THIS EPISODE:Histamine IntoleranceThis refers to a condition where individuals experience adverse reactions to histamines in the body. Histamine intolerance can manifest as symptoms such as migraines, nasal congestion, hives, insomnia, and difficulty tolerating fermented foods. Histamine intolerance occurs when the body is unable to break down histamine efficiently due to a deficiency in enzymes like diamine oxidase (DAO) and histamine methyltransferase (HMNT).Causes and Factors of Histamine IntoleranceThere are several possibilities for the underlying causes of histamine intolerance. Genetic variants can affect the body's capacity for breaking down histamine. Imbalances in gut microbes, leaky gut syndrome, and mast cell activation can contribute to increased histamine production. Chronic exposure to allergens or harmful chemicals can also lead to higher histamine levels in the body. How To Manage HistaminesTaking antihistamines may not be the best solution. Several strategies can help manage histamine intolerance. These strategies include addressing nutrient imbalances, such as ensuring sufficient intake of vitamin B6, vitamin C and quercetin, which support histamine regulation. Certain supplements like DAO can aid in breaking down histamine. It may also be helpful to follow a low-histamine diet, avoiding high-histamine foods like aged cheeses, fermented foods, and leftovers. Additionally, supporting gut health, managing stress, and adopting a healthy lifestyle can contribute to reducing histamine intolerance symptoms.References:Get our FREE Guide to Taking a Detailed Health History that gets you to root causes with Access Additional Resources for Practitioners ready to improve clinical outcomes through our Nutritional Endocrinology Practitioner Training. In this episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we zero in on the brain and the genetics related to serotonin synthesis together with my special guest, Dr. Ben Lynch.Dr. Ben Lynch is the best-selling author of Dirty Genes and the President of Seeking Health, a company that helps educate health professionals on how to overcome genetic dysfunction. IN THIS EPISODE:Key Genes in Serotonin SynthesisSerotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in regulating mood, behavior, and various physiological processes. Practitioners learning about important genes related to serotonin synthesis should focus on genes such as TPH1 and TPH2, which encode the enzymes tryptophan hydroxylase 1 and 2, respectively. These enzymes are responsible for converting the amino acid tryptophan into 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), a precursor molecule in serotonin synthesis. TPH1 is primarily expressed in peripheral tissues, while TPH2 is predominantly found in the brain.Genes Involved in Serotonin ReuptakeSerotonin reuptake transporters are proteins that remove serotonin from the synaptic cleft, terminating its signaling and regulating serotonin levels. The serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4), also known as the serotonin transporter or SERT gene, is a crucial gene in this process. Variations in the SLC6A4 gene, such as the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism, have been associated with altered serotonin reuptake efficiency and have been implicated in various psychiatric disorders and individual differences in emotional and behavioral traits.Understanding Serotonin Metabolism After serotonin is released into the synaptic cleft, it undergoes degradation by the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO). Two forms of MAO, MAOA and MAOB, are responsible for metabolizing serotonin. Practitioners should consider these genes when studying serotonin metabolism. Variations in the MAOA gene have been linked to altered enzyme activity and have been associated with aggression and impulsive behavior. Understanding the genetic factors influencing serotonin metabolism and the nutrient cofactors that are necessary for metabolism can provide insights into lifestyle factors and nutrients that can assist clients in managing their care.RESOURCES:Dr. Ben LynchFollow Dr. Ben Lynch on Instagram here. Too much neurotransmitter activity can cause nervousness, irritability, insomnia and in some cases mania and psychosis. This can also contribute to pain symptoms, headaches, and increased blood pressure and heart rate. One root cause is an inability to effectively break down neurotransmitters. Two genes involved in this process are the COMT and MAO genes. COMT is also involved in the metabolism of estrogen. If they are "slow," we can struggle with symptoms of high neurotransmitter activity, low stress tolerance and in the case of COMT, high estrogen symptoms. In this podcast, I'll discuss the many factors that impact the expression of these variants, how these can be identified and how this information can impact treatment. In the previous episode, I discussed Overmethylation - an understanding that comes out of the work of Dr. William Walsh, PhD and the Walsh Research Institute. Like most critical aspects of health, stress can be a double-edged sword. It's necessary for physical and emotional growth, and we all know that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. However, too much stress can do far more damage than even a poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle. The trick seems to be embracing the right kinds of stress in the right doses, and under those conditions, it can be a catalyst for improved strength and resilience. Today for the second instalment of our Health Fundamental series, NBT coaches Megan Hall and Clay Higgins are examining stress and hormesis. They talk about simple biomarkers to help you measure your current allostatic load and then they discuss simple, practical things anyone can do to better manage emotional stress. They also discuss how to use hormesis - intentional and measured amounts of stressors like temperature, exercise, diet, and breathing, to boost your body's functioning while becoming better adapted and stronger. To get all the details and studies supporting the information in this podcast, be sure to follow along with Megan's outline for this episode.
