In celebration of the Halloween Week, Brad has some fun in this week's episode as he highlights the science behind "The Wolverine Workout" that made Hugh Jackman's character take a shape that is unlike any other superhero characters that have been on the screen. Brad gives an overview to the 4 main principles to the overall transformation that was led up by Hugh's expert trainer: 1.) Weight Training: 4 Major lifts that focus on strength: Bench Press, Back Squat, Deadlift, Weighted Pull Up 2.) Cardio: 45 min Low Intensity Steady State Training at 60-65% of HR Max to allow for targeted fat burn immediately after morning weight lifting. 3.) Intermittent Fasting: 16 hour fast followed by 8 hours of eating. Typically was 4pm-8am for Hugh due to his filming schedule. This allows for a glucose deficit and forces the body to burn more fat in this state. 4.) Carb Cycling: Higher carbs on weight training days, lower on rest days and non weight training days. Leveraging 4 Major Lifts Brad speaks to how Hugh's trainer focused on finding his 1 rep max using 95% of his total max numbers to come up with a chart that allows for progressive loading in 4 week microcycles. Hugh had 6 months for his transformation therefore had 6 microcycles within his 1, 6 month macrocycle. Each week within the microcycle called for a progressive build up that led to a higher rep count in the last week. You restart at the beginning of each new 4 week period and add 10-15% of weight to allow for adaptation to allow for a higher strength base which will allow for more weight eventually to be lifted within the 6-12 rep range which is what causes muscular hypertrophy (increased muscle). Below is the example of the progression mindset: Read as Week 1,2,3,4 Progression with each Set: Set 1 : 5 reps at 60% ,4 reps at 65% , 4 reps at 70% , 10 reps at 40% Set 2: 5 reps at 65%, 4 reps at 75%, 3 reps at 80%, 10 reps at 50% Set 3: 5 reps at 75%, 4 reps at 85%, 3 reps at 90%, 10 reps at 60% Set 4: 5 reps at 75%, 4 reps at 85%, 3 reps at 90%, 10 reps at 90% Take notes on this episode to help find chunks that can apply to you. There are some great principles that can really help you kickstart a program if you so desire. Happy Halloween from the SportSquire Team!

From this, he crafted a magic ring which gave him a wide variety of powers. The limitations of the ring were that it had to be "charged" every 24 hours by touching it to the lantern for a time and that it could not directly affect objects made of wood. Alan Scott fought mostly ordinary human villains, but he did have a few paranormal ones such as the immortal Vandal Savage and the zombie Solomon Grundy.  He was part of the Justice Society of America, had his own comic as well as appeared in Comics Cavalcade and All-Star Comics. At the end of WWII Supers fell on hard times and his comic was canceled. He never again had his own title and later his character was revamped and renamed to Sentinel to avoid confusion with Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern.GEEK OUTSTrish - Lucifer!!! Dr. Satchin Panda is a professor at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, California, and author of the new book “”. Dr. Panda is a frequent speaker in international conferences on metabolism, exercise and chronic diseases. His research focuses on how circadian clocks regulate behavior, physiology and metabolism. His discovery of how a blue light sensor in the eyes affect sleep- wake cycle, depression and alertness is leading a new revolution in managing light to improve health. Recently he discovered that maintaining a daily feeding-fasting cycle – popularly known as Time-Restricted Eating (TRE) – can prevent and reverse many chronic diseases. Like most people, you probably wake up, get hungry for meals and doze off in bed around the same time every day. If you’ve ever experienced jet lag or pulled an all-nighter, you know that this schedule can easily be thrown off kilter. But for some people, that imbalance—difficulty sleeping at night, hunger at odd times, or sudden fatigue at noon—is a constant. If you're one of those people, Dr. Panda, one of the leading researchers on circadian rhythms, has a plan to reset your body clock. Beginning with an in-depth explanation of the circadian clock—why it’s important, how it works, and how to know it isn’t working—heoutlines lifestyle changes to make to get back on track. It's a concrete plan to enhance weight loss, improve sleep, optimize exercise, and manage technology so that it doesn’t interfere with your body’s natural rhythm. Dr. Panda’s life changing methods show you how to prevent and reverse ailments like diabetes, cancer, and dementia, as well as microbiome conditions like acid reflux, heartburn, and irritable bowel disease. During our discussion, you'll learn: -About TRE, and how it's related to the circadian code...6:25 You're mindful of your first and last calorie of the day; you want to intake calories within a set period of time each day. Why it's a time restriction, as opposed to a caloric restriction. TRE is more practical for the modern lifestyle than to restrict the food you eat with no time restrictions. Lab tests showed that mice ate the same amount of calories with TRE as without. Tests involving humans have shown that TRE has resulted in improved overall health. Good news for people who are tired of constantly being "cold and hungry" while trying to live healthy lifestyle. -The truth about Hugh Jackman's "Wolverine" Diet...10:30 Ate a lot of protein in a 8-9 hour window; resulted in putting on a lot of muscle for Wolverine. TRE is becoming a trend among Hollywood actors. Many body builders are using TRE; it's simply more practical and easier on the body. It's difficult to ascertain what is the best mode of TRE for each individual. Best to discover for yourself through trial and error. -How TRE affects endurance sport athletes...18:00 Tests have been conducted on mice, not humans thus far. Question was: will mice lose endurance when they have a small window of time for eating? Mice eating an unhealthy diet on TRE far outperformed mice with the same diet with no time restrictions on eating. -What is the optimal timeframe when utilizing TRE?...23:45 Most American adults eat more than 12, even 15 hours per day. The easiest (and healthiest) way to start incorporating TRE is to eat a later breakfast and an earlier dinner. -Why Dr. Panda believes that drinking a cup of coffee "breaks a fast"...29:30 Most people put cream and sugar in their coffee. Black coffee is preferable. A dependence on coffee to "get going" in the morning is an indication you're not getting enough sleep. By "fasting" Dr. Panda is referring more to resting your organs than not consuming calories. You can't repair a highway with traffic on it. Coffee can "reset" the circadian clock. A cup is akin to being exposed to an hour of bright light. After noon, coffee affects your ability to have deep, restful sleep at night. -About "Zeitgebers" and how you can use them to reset your circadian clock...38:30 We have "clocks" throughout the body. Light affects the "brain clock." Changing your eating schedule is a more powerful way to reset your circadian clock. Jet lag occurs more often after lunch. Eat a big breakfast, a smaller lunch or no lunch, and a good sized dinner. This may differ depending on your physical activity. -The best time of day to exercise...43:50 Late in the afternoon. Our ancestors had to get home (run) before dark. We've adapted to exercise better in the afternoon. "The circadian advantage": A West Coast based NFL team playing Monday Night Football on the East Coast has an advantage because of the time difference. -About "bi-phasic" sleep. Is it true that our ancestors would sleep, then wake up in the middle of the night, then go back to sleep?...48:00 "Common" does not equate to "normal." Our ancestors weren't as busy as modern people. We have a tighter window in which to sleep. -Ways to enhance your oxygen availability while flying, and reduce jet lag...53:10 Use a nasal device to expand your nostrils. Ayurvedic medicine: counter the dryness of the air with oils. -Why it's a bad idea to take melatonin right after eating...56:20 "Evening diabetes." The pancreas doesn't produce as much insulin. Give yourself at least an hour after waking up before eating. -The idea of resetting the "gut clock"...1:03:18 -And much more! Midweek Motivation is a weekly episode featuring the wisdom and stories of host Tommy Cakes. This episode is all about the lessons learned from the life of PT Barnum and the movie “The Greatest Showman.” There are some great lessons learned about friends, creativity and unstoppable drive from the life of PT Barnum, and Tommy Cakes tells you some of those lessons in his own unique way. In case you are having trouble understanding the audio file, the following is a translation of the audio file from host Tommy Cakes. Who is Tommy Cakes? Live on the Small Scale Life Podcast, it is Midweek Motivation featuring Tommy Cakes. Hey, how are you?  I am Tommy Cakes.  Who am I?  I'm a guy from someplace, friends with some people and doing some things.  Don't worry about it! What I can tell you is that I am in the import and export business. I import knowledge I export that information at premium prices! I will give you a little coastal cosmopolitan insight and motivation weekly on Small Scale Life   Introduction – The Greatest Showman In case you haven’t noticed, Midweek Motivation is a little different than your typical Small Scale Life post.  We get into some social and cultural commentary while I try to motivate you with some of that knowledge. In this show, we are going to focus on a movie that everyone is talking about.  The movie is good entertainment with some life lessons buried inside it. As you know, movies have depicted some interesting and uplifting characters that have done some truly remarkable things beyond wearing fancy clothes and impressive hats! Story Time The hero of this story started from humble beginnings as the son of a son of innkeeper, tailor and store-keeper.  Our hero was excellent at math but didn’t like physical work! From his first job as a shopkeeper, he moved up and eventually purchased a museum.  He added new attractions and transformed it to include: A lighthouse lamp that shown light down Broadway A strolling garden on the roof with a view of the city Giant animal paintings from the windows and Hot-air balloon rides that launched from the showplace daily. Over time and by adding exotic acts to his show, our hero met with the Queen of England, Czar of Russia and royalty across Europe. In just a few years, he owned several museums and had a draw of 400,000 people a year! Our hero lost his wealth in some bad business and real estate deals, and he spent four long years in litigation and public humiliation. His friends stood by his side and supported him, and eventually he gained momentum and created the US’ first aquarium and met with the President of the United States. Even after his museums burned down, our hero once again connected with friends and started a circus in Delevan, Wisconsin.  He had the first circus to move from town to town and across the country by train (and the first circus to own a train).  It was billed as the Greatest Show on Earth! After leaving the circus, our hero wrote books and became a politician, serving as a State Representative for four terms and later served the mayor of his town. Midweek Motivation Lesson: Friends, Creativity and Drive So what is the point of all this? Life is hard, and it knocks you down.  Things happen that don’t seem fair, and the odds can be stacked against you. We can learn from Phineas Taylor Barnum, the hero of our story and a distant relative of Julie Taylor Domres. When times were tough, PT Barnum's friends supported and helped him.  Even when the chips were down, PT Barnum used his creativity and relentless drive to push himself to new limits and new successes. What’s holding you back?  Get started making good friends and using your creativity and drive today.  We are waiting to help you, friend.  Reach out and take my hand. That’s all I got this week.  This is Tommy Cakes, and I’ll see you next week!  Bada boom, bada bing! "The Greatest Showman" Recently Hollywood released a movie about PT Barnum called “The Greatest Showman.”  While there are a lot of things that are Hollywood fiction and narratives, it is an uplifting movie.  Tommy Cakes gives it two thumbs up, so go see it. After all, it takes an Upcoming Showman to know the Greatest Showman! For a taste of the energy of this movie, watch this pre-production video from "The Greatest Showman."  Throughout the movie and this clip, I kept waiting for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine moment, but we got something completely different and inspiring! I have to give my wife Julie credit, it was a good movie and had great energy (even though it did not match historical accounts).  By the way, my wife Julie IS a distant relative of PT Barnum (that is true), so you can see why she puts up with an amateur showman like yours truly. Special Thanks from Tommy Cakes I would like to thank Greg Burns from Natures Image Farm and Doneil Freeman from Freeman Family Farms for the INSPIRATION to do this Midweek Motivation Podcast.  You two ARE the wind beneath my wings! Also I would like to thank Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) for the "Kool Kats" theme music. Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/. If one could embody charm, it might very well take the form of James Mangold - an open, warm and intelligent man who also happens to have a proven track record in delivering quite tremendous movies. His latest offering is Logan - a dark, violent and spandex-free addition to the X-Men franchise, which sees Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the throes of existential crises. Critics love it - in part due to the director's offbeat take on a sometimes formulaic genre. And as we'll discover, offbeat is a word which applies equally to Marco Beltrami's score ... While James doesn't entirely accept the claim himself, his films have been described as eclectic. He's certainly tackled a rich variety of subject matter - from Cop Land to Girl Interrupted and the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line - with scores and soundtracks to boot. Enjoy!
