By the last race in the 1985 Indy Car Series, the drivers' championship had come down to a single point – between Al Unser and his son, Al Unser Jr. Al Unser Sr was already an accomplished racer, with 3 Indy 500's and two National Championship wins under his belt, whereas his son's career was just beginning, and a championship win would cement his place in the world of IndyCar racing. Al was faced with a unique decision – he could pass his rival to his third national championship, or keep his spot and let his son take the crown. It was at this moment that Al Unser Sr had to make a choice – was he a father or a racecar driver? But how did the Unser family earn their reputation in the world of automotive racing? What made them arguably the first family of Indy racing? And what does the future of racing hold for the new generation of Unsers? Then, Kevin and Curt discuss the upcoming docuseries leading up to the Indianapolis 500 in partnership with the CW and VICE Media. We discuss the six-part series called “100 Days to Indy” and what kind of audience and reach the series is trying to have. Which drivers should the series focus on? The conversation goes deep into the potential content, could it push controversy and how it will impact teams. Then, Kevin and Curt discuss the marketing budget and strategy of IndyCar and the series being more aggressive in its approach moving forward. That leads to a conversation about the reports that a group of drivers sent letters to the highest ranking management at IndyCar in a push for more marketing. To round out the first hour, Kevin and Curt answer Twitter questions and get into news and notes of the day. In the second hour, the legendary broadcaster Paul Page joins the show to discuss his book, Hello, I'm Paul Page: It's Race Day in Indianapolis. Curt and the 27-year Indy 500 broadcaster discuss the project of the book and how he constructed it. Page talks about the stories he tells in the book and which ones he got to tell at length for the first time publicly. The broadcast booth at IMS used to be situated in a manner that Page couldn't see the finish line and he tells the story of calling one of Al Unser Jr's wins in the early 1990s. The longtime broadcaster tells more stories about how complex broadcasting is at a place as big as IMS and some of the work he's the proudest of. Then, Page details why he wanted Mario Andretti to write the foreword in his book. It's a brilliant 30 minutes with a great storyteller. To round out the show, Kevin and Curt discuss the return of Thursday Night Thunder in SRX, other driver news and what we missed during the show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

AL UNSER JR has lived a double life - supreme racing talent and self-inflicted personal turmoil. He won two CART championships and won the Indianapolis 500 twice. It's rare for someone so successful in their motorsport career to open up on struggles with addiction, depression and abuse. His new book "Al Unser Jr: A Checkered Past" is a brutally honest look at some of the stories which racing fans will know, and some which he has never talked about before. Growing up in Indycar with a famous surname he was put on a pedestal. Nephew to Bobby, son of Al. The story of 'Little Al' would too often leave the pages of Autosport for the tabloids to chart the fall from grace of an American darling. JAMES NEWBOLD asks about how he was able to supress his anger at Emerson Fittipaldi after his crash in the 1989 Indy 500, and win an award for sportsmanship, when he had to fight every natural urge not to retaliate. Al Unser Jr., born into one of motorsports' most prominent racing families, won the Indianapolis 500 twice and two IndyCar Championships. But he was also troubled. Unser abused alcohol and drugs and it destroyed a marriage. Friendships ended and he was arrested multiple times for drunken driving and domestic violence. Unser's struggles and his winding road in recovery is the subject of the new book, "A Checkered Past." Al Unser Jr.: A Story To Tell The race car driver, recently re-married, tells his story to author veteran motorsports author Jade Gurss. Gurss is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast Al Unser Jr., tells his story to veteran automotive writer Jade Gurss in the new book, "A Checkered Past." Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with the author the difficulties of writing the book. "It was very challenging," says Gurss. "I had just come off finishing a book with John Andretti in the final months of life. Sadly, John dies of colon cancer. When I was contacted about doing Al's story, he was very upfront. He said, 'I am going to be open; I am going to be honest and I am going to tell the truth." "I knew that it was going to be a challenge to write something that obviously had very, very tough issues and very, very tough stories about what he had gone through battling with drugs and alcohol." Al Unser Jr.: 'Not So Heroic' A two-time New York Times best-selling author, Gurss' latest book is his sixth, and it's now available on Amazon.com from Octane Press. A native of Topeka, Kansas, Gurss resides in the Charlotte, NC area. "I give Al full credit for being so open and willing to talk about things that don't paint him in such a heroic light," says Gurss. "A lot of my previous books had a much more positive attitude, I guess, for a lack of a better term. And this one certainly has a sense of sadness." Gurss has been involved with a long list of motorsports sponsors and racing categories. He has represented Anheuser-Busch, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda and many other major motorsports sponsors. As co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast, Bruce Aldrich and I sometimes have a guest cancel at the last minute. Two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was our scheduled guest. With his non-appearance, we decided to talk about him. Specifically, we discuss Unser's new book, "A Checkered Past." The 302-hardcover offering includes a foreword by Roger Penske, the team owner who once employed "Little Al" and who is now the owner of the Indianapolis Speedway. Al Unser Jr. tells his life story in his new book, "A Checkered Past." The book is written "As Told To Jade Gurss." A long-time journalist, Gurss has written several additional motorsports books and has also worked in marketing and publicity for Mercedes-Benz and Mazda in his varied career. Unser's book is appropriately titled. Throughout his adult life, the winner of the 1992 and 1994 Indy 500s has been addicted to alcohol and drugs. It costs him his racing career, friends, family and nearly his life. Al Unser Jr.: Life Was A Party "Something else made a big difference for me personally," Unser says in Chapter 15: Randomly Selected. "For the first time CART has instituted random drug testing. A month before the first race of the season (1988), I quit smoking marijuana on a daily basis. I felt sharp. I could feel the difference when I was driving and giving feedback to the team." But for Al Unser Jr. life as an addict and its ramifications exceeded his attempts for a healthy life. Beyond discussing the new book, Bruce also provides an update on the pending new Ford F-250 pickup truck and RV he and his wife Alene have recently purchased. Telsa Moves To Texas Where Gas Rules We also talk about Elon Musk's to relocate Tesla's headquarters from Palo Alto to Austin, Texas. And we conclude Episode #201 with some observational "odds and ends" from the automotive industry including a brief report on Escapod. It's market as "Born from a desire to build the best damn camper known to man, the TOPO2 is a premium teardrop trailer that doesn't ask you to choose adventure over comfort." During the recent Sea Otter Classic bicycle festival on the Monterey Peninsula, I met the co-founder of the company, Chris Hudak during the event's expo. We briefly talked about his family and their travels. The Weekly Driver Podcast: Comments, Support Welcomed The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. All of the era's biggest stars were there with reigning champion Emerson Fittipaldi, Detroit polesitter and race winner Michael Andretti, his father Mario Andretti, Al Unser Jr, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, and more on the entry list. And the best part from an audio standpoint was the variety to be heard from the 2.65-liter single-turbo V8 engines from Chevrolet, Cosworth, Judd, Alfa Romeo, and Porsche. There's also the distinct grunt and wail from the 3.4-liter single-turbo Buicks in action around the tight 2.5-mile street layout. In a special episode of The Race IndyCar Podcast, Al Unser Jr stars to talk about his and Penske's 1994 Indianapolis 500 victory. The event is significant mainly due to the shock the Ilmor-built Mercedes-badged engine produced. Built in secret, it exploited the rulebook with bigger displacement and turbo boost than its rivals. Whether its parts being flown on a World War 2 fighter jet and Concorde to reach Penske, a scuba-diving holiday that helped trigger an engineering breakthrough or the 'Taj Mahal' factory where the engines were rebuilt before being wheeled in the dead of night to Penske's race shop, it's a fascinating tale. Helping to tell the story, the manager of Penske's Indy 500 engine programme Kevin Walter and author of the critically acclaimed book called Beast - Jade Gurss - add to Unser Jr's memories of testing the car and, among other things, learning of the fact that its 1000bhp+ turned the wheels inside the tyres.

Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 1993 Daytona 500, the 35th running of the event, was held February 14 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida as the first race of the 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup season. Dale Jarrett won the race. Dale Earnhardt was the leader on Lap 130 when Wally Dallenbach Jr. brushed the Turn 4 wall. Sterling Marlin and Michael Waltrip were lined up behind him, and when Marlin backed off, Waltrip tagged him and sent him into a spin. Marlin caught air as he spun by Joe Ruttman, who was coming to pit road to retire with engine failure. 5 laps after the restart, Rick Wilson and Bobby Hamilton collided on the backstretch. Approaching 50 laps to go, 1991 Daytona 500 winner Ernie Irvan was turned into the wall exiting Turn 2, eliminating a possible winner. The first major wreck happened when Dale Earnhardt touched 1992 Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. (competing in his only Winston Cup Series race). His #46 Chevrolet crashed into the 90 of Bobby Hillin Jr., who spun into the path of polesitter Kyle Petty. Both had a heated verbal exchange, Hillin reportedly was telling Petty he had no brakes, but both were victims of circumstances. With 31 laps to go, Derrike Cope and Waltrip touched in Turn 2. Waltrip spun down into 1989 Winston Cup Champion Rusty Wallace and sent him into a horrific series of barrel rolls in the grass. A little more than minute later, Ken Squier reported that Wallace came on the radio to crew chief Buddy Parrott and said, "I'm okay." By this time, Hut Stricklin and Sterling Marlin presented themselves as contenders. Earnhardt led from the restart, only to be passed briefly by Dale Jarrett. The #3 was soon in the lead again, as he was pursued by the Chevrolets of Jarrett and Jeff Gordon, and the Fords of 1986 Daytona 500 winner Geoff Bodine, Hut Stricklin, Mark Martin, and Morgan Shepherd. The "Dale and Dale Show" commenced as Jarrett passed Earnhardt in the tri-oval as they took the white flag. As the leaders exited Turn 2, the CBS Sports producers told Ken Squier and Neil Bonnett through their headsets to let Ned Jarrett to "call his son Dale home". In response, Jarrett called the finish thus: "Come on, Dale! Go, buddy, go! All right, come on! I know he's got it to the floorboard; he can't do anymore! Come on! Take 'er to the inside! Don't let 'em get on the inside of you comin' around this turn! Here he comes, Earnhardt; it's the "Dale and Dale Show" as we come off Turn 4! You know who I'm pulling for, it's Dale Jarrett. Bring her to the inside, Dale! Don't let him get down there! He's gonna make it! Dale Jarrett's gonna win the Daytona 500!!!" The next weekend at Rockingham, Ned reportedly apologized to Earnhardt for his obvious show of bias, to which an understanding Earnhardt replied, "I'm a daddy too."
