Today we speak to a man who needs little introduction. Zak Brown is the CEO of McLaren Racing, one of Formula One's most iconic brands and a team currently undergoing a resurgence as it challenges at the top of both the Drivers and Constructors Championships after years of struggling to match the success of Mercedes and Red Bull. Turning an organisation round and re-establishing a culture of success is no easy task, and Zak has been under no illusion that to reach the top of one of the most competitive and scrutinised sports in the world, you need to be exceptional.  F1 is a landscape of marginal gains. What does Zak attribute the success of McLaren to this year and how does he plan to build on this to get his two drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri challenging for the Championship in his cars. We were honoured to be hosted by the amazing McLaren team at their incredible offices for this recording, and we are so grateful to Zak for giving us his time in one of the busiest parts of his calendar as the season draws to a close. I really hope you enjoy hearing from one of sports' top executives.  On today's show we discuss: Finances of F1: ‘Every team is worth at least £1bn'. What has made these businesses so valuable and how have they managed to build better performance off better financial structures? Profitability in F1 is now something that spreads across the grid rather than being an outcome enjoyed by the lucky few. How has this happened? What are the key revenue streams of an F1 team? What sits centrally with the governing body and what can the teams generate individually? How does sponsorship work and who would Zak's dream partner be for McLaren? What has the cost cap done for the sport and why was it necessary to introduce it in the first place? Developing Great Drivers: What has made Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri so effective this year and what makes them stand out from the competition? Has Oscar Piastri developed quicker than the team expected and how do you integrate a young driver into the setup without exerting too much pressure? Can you have two number one drivers?  The importance of building respect and parity in the relationship between executive, garage, and driver. How much success is attributed to the driver, and how much is the car? The Importance of People Why does Zak attribute much of the success of the team to the culture of the organisation? How do you build a great culture? It is something often talked about but hard to execute and maintain? What is it about McLaren that makes it such a great place to work? How do you retain staff to ensure continuity in the team? A huge thank you to our amazing partners: WSC Sports  https://wsc-sports.com/ Tyndall Investment Management  https://tyndallim.co.uk/

Dale Earnhardt Jr. sets out to learn more about the world of open wheel motorsports as he sits down with the CEO of McLaren Racing Zak Brown. Big news brought the open wheel executive to town as McLaren joined Hendrick Motorsports in announcing that Kyle Larson will return to the Indianapolis 500 in 2025 for another attempt at the Memorial Day double. Zak explains how the partnership with Rick Hendrick came together through an adoration for his race team, which he views as a North American equivalent of McLaren. He also credits Larson's versatility with being reminiscent of yesteryear's drivers like A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. As McLaren continues to flourish open wheel racing, Zak says his sights are set on becoming a top-outfit in the sports car ranks, competing in both WEC and IMSA in the future.Zak's background in racing can be traced to the 1981 Long Beach Grand Prix, which he attended with his parents and brother. A successful appearance on Wheel of Fortune when he was 13 and advice from Mario himself led to a door opening in go-kart racing, which Zak entered and never looked back. After finding a knack for securing sponsorship, Zak realized he was better fit on the marketing end of the sport and started his own company, Just Marketing, Inc., which quickly rose to being one of the top businesses in racing. Zak would sell the company and find himself at a professional crossroads before being faced with the ultimate career decision: be in line to one day run Formula One or help direct McLaren Racing. Thanks to his love of competition, Zak took the position at the legendary race team and helped it return to its former glory at the forefront of the racing world.Dale and Zak share one strong common thread, through Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s 1980s Nova, which currently resides in the JR Motorsports garage. Zak was a longtime owner of the vehicle before Dale Jr. was able to acquire it through auction, and he shares an incredible story of how he was able to confirm its authenticity.

By Cory Minton, Field CTO What does it take to build and race cars that go more than 200 miles an hour?  In the high-octane world of racing, it's not just the skill of the driver and the top-notch racecar that matter. Data emerges as a secret weapon, shaping everything from the production line to the pulse-pounding moments on the track. Recently, I had the exhilarating opportunity to chat with Zak Brown, the mastermind behind McLaren Racing. According to Zak, data isn't just important; it's the lifeblood of the business. It's not enough to have a flood of information; you need to harness it, dissect it, and use it to make split-second decisions. "Racing has transformed from relying on gut instinct to being driven by hard data," Zak reveals. "And if you ignore what the data tells you, you're bound to miss the mark." During our conversation, Zak shares  what it's like collaborating with racing phenoms like Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as well as  the thrilling story behind McLaren's record-breaking pit stop, clocking in at an astonishing 1.80 seconds. And just when I thought the adrenaline couldn't get any higher, Zak drops the bombshell about Brad Pitt portraying him in the upcoming Formula One blockbuster.

Some say, Mercedes customer teams are doing better with Mercedes parts, than Mercedes themselves. Is this really true or does it just look different for Aston Martin and McLaren Racing? Let's add some things up and see. Williams Racing have a decision to make going forward with Logan Sargeant. Give Logan extreme room to run up more of a repair bill or cut loose and grab another driver to manage. Alex Albon is showing Williams what their FW45 car is capable of. They need to consider the other examples of evidence sprinkled throughout the grid. Like, Lawson and Piastri.

Dan Jimenez and Alex Kirry couldn't wait to breakdown this past weekend's amazing race at Silverstone.  Sure, it was another Red Bull win with Max Verstappen tightening his grip on the field even more but McLaren surprised with a Lando Norris podium and Oscar Piastri barely off the podium in 4th.   The guys celebrate, maybe early, with the thought that new regulations are bringing the field closer to a more competitive F1 schedule the rest of the year.  But the big breaking news happened today with Alpha Tauri announcing that their rookie, Nyck DeVries is no longer in the race seat and the much anticipated return of Daniel Ricciardo to the sport.  Dan and Alex are pumped for the news but will it change the tide for the Red Bull junior team?  take a listen! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sam Schmidt is the Co-Owner of Arrow McLaren SP, an Indycar racing team comprised of two determined racing entities, McLaren Racing and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. That ambition is shared and supported by title partner Arrow Electronics. Sam grew up working on race cars and in 1997 embarked on his racing career as an Indycar driver. Two years later he took his first win in Las Vegas and finished 5th in the 1999 championship. In January of the following year, during off-season testing at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Sam suffered a massive crash. After being airlifted to a nearby hospital he was later diagnosed as a quadriplegic due to a severe injury on the C-3 and C-4 levels of his spinal cord. Despite no longer being able to race himself, Sam showed immense courage as within 14 months of the accident he had created the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation as well as Sam Schmidt Motorsports, now Arrow McLaren SP. Mike and Sam cover a ton of great stuff in this episode:how his father inspired his incredible work ethic, the life-changing crash and self-described “hell-on-earth” experience of being on a ventilator and his transition off of it, his no-excuses approach to being a quadriplegic and his high expectations for people with spinal cords injuries, how Arrow Electronics team of engineers created a control system in his car so he could drive a car around Indianapolis Speedway at 150 mph, racing his Arrow Electronics C7 Corvette up legendary and dangerous Pikes Peak, his plans for voice activation controls in his new Arrow Electronics SAM C8 Corvette, how he believes that type of control system and technology can be embedded in industrial applications to help disabled people get back to work, and how the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation is changing outcomes of people with spinal cord injuries, and much more. Learn more about Sam Schmidt at: https://arrowmclarensp.com https://twitter.com/samschmidtcpn https://www.instagram.com/sam.schmidt_ https://www.conquerparalysisnow.org If you like this episode and want to be the first to know when new ones are released?
