Blushington isn't a startup just out of the gate—it's a growing company with a decade of experience, built on making beauty accessible to everyone.Natasha shared how Blushington pivoted during the pandemic, using that challenging period as an inflection point to redesign its business model. They emerged with a franchise concept, allowing people to become business owners supported by Blushington's proven expertise. This shift has positioned Blushington for ambitious growth, aiming to open 60 franchise locations by the end of 2028.One of the most compelling aspects of Blushington's expansion is its commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. As Natasha said, "The Blushington experience is about luxury, but it's about accessibility." This mission resonates deeply with potential franchisees, especially those like Dr. Karen Diaz Maeike, Blushington's first franchise owner, who embodies the spirit of making a difference in their community.Blushington's current capital raise on WeFunder aligns with its expansion plans, providing investors with an opportunity to be part of this exciting journey. Natasha's passion for empowering others, whether through beauty services or entrepreneurship, shines through, making Blushington a company poised for impactful growth. It's truly inspiring to see a business not just survive adversity but use it as a springboard for transformation and inclusivity.tl;dr:* Blushington, led by Natasha Cornstein, has pivoted and expanded its services, adding blowouts and wig styling to create a unique beauty experience that combines luxury and accessibility.* The company transitioned from corporate ownership to a franchise model, using the pandemic as an opportunity to reorganize and improve profitability, aiming for significant growth in the coming years.* Natasha emphasizes Blushington's commitment to inclusivity, ensuring all customers, regardless of background, feel welcome and comfortable in their beauty journey.* The new wig styling service originated from listening to customer needs, demonstrating Natasha's "power listening" approach to innovation and business growth.* Blushington launched its franchise sales in early 2024 and is focused on expanding across the Southeast, with the first franchise owned by a longtime customer, showcasing trust and validation of the brand. How to Develop Power Listening As a SuperpowerNatasha describes her superpower as being a "power listener." She genuinely loves meeting new people and learning from their experiences. This ability to listen attentively, coupled with her passion for execution, allows her to identify innovative ideas and turn them into real business opportunities. Natasha emphasizes that listening isn't just a passive activity—it's the foundation for her leadership and Blushington's growth. One notable story that exemplifies Natasha's superpower is the recent launch of wig styling services at Blushington. This idea originated from a casual conversation with a client and a suggestion from one of the artists on the salon floor. Natasha listened carefully, researched the idea, and ultimately implemented it, transforming it into a new offering that aligns with Blushington's mission to provide uplifting experiences for all customers, including those facing health challenges like chemotherapy.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Be Present in Conversations: Practice active listening in every interaction—whether it's with team members, customers, or others. Engage fully to understand their perspectives.* Be Curious: Treat every conversation as a learning opportunity. Approach new people and ideas with curiosity.* Value Others' Ideas: Give importance to suggestions and insights from people around you. Find ways to explore and evaluate their ideas.* Execute on Feedback: Take action on the best ideas. Follow through with research, testing, and implementation to bring those ideas to life.By following Natasha's example and advice, you can make power listening a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Before starting the Runway of Dreams Foundation in 2014, Mindy spent 20 years working in fashion as a designer for the INC collection and as a stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2016, Mindy partnered with Tommy Hilfiger to make fashion history creating the first mainstream adaptive clothing line in the market. In 2022, the Runway of Dreams fashion show was recognized as one of the top seven NYFW shows by Forbes, highlighting the latest designs from the Adaptive category featuring brands such as Kohl's, Target, JCPenney, Zappos.com and Tommy Hilfiger. Joe Ramos and Liza Sosa of the MIracles and Dreams Foundation discuss Miracle on Main.
What do you actually want to be in your life? As a kid you can dream about being an astronaut or brain surgeon or sports superstar. As an adult it's not so easy to answer that question, and it's especially difficult if life has thrown you a curveball and if you're navigating trauma or hardship. In that case, when you're struggling to put one foot in front of the other, "Purpose" might be the last thing on your mind. But purpose might be the thing you need most. That's Kandice Bateast's theory. By day, Kandice is a school psychologist in St. Martin Parish. But many more people know her as an author and podcast host. Kandice went through a tough breakup herself and found purpose of her own: helping others put the pieces back together and get right with God. Her podcast Goodbye Heartbreak, Hello Purpose helps listeners heal by finding strength from within. Kandice wrote a book with the same name that tracks with the podcast. It's a 365-day devotional, walking listeners through the post-breakup journey. Sometimes your purpose is right in front of you. In Donielle Watkins' case it was her son Logan, who has spina bifida. Donielle has been an accountant for 20 years and in 2007 she founded DREAMS Foundation of Acadiana. DREAMS was the first organization of its kind in the area. It focuses on disability rights and inclusion. And the concept came from Logan. Logan asked Donielle a simple question: Mom, when can I play basketball? It struck Donielle that there wasn't any good reason that he shouldn't. So she organized activities for Logan and kids just like him. DREAMS has grown to serve around 700 people from ages 5 to 60. And it preaches self-reliance. Today, Donielle, who was born in Breaux Bridge and now lives in Lafayette, has 21 people employed in a manufacturing facility that produces Cane River Meat Pies. Out to Lunch Acadiana is recorded live over lunch at Tula Tacos and Amigos in downtown Lafayette. You can find photos from this show by Astor Morgan at itsacadiana.com. Joe Ramos and Andrew Guerra of the Miracles and Dreams Foundation discuss their upcoming scholarship opportunities.
Donielle Watkins, Co-Director of the D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana, joins us to discuss her passion for helping individuals with special needs have access to fun and enriching activities. Donielle and her husband, Brian, founded D.R.E.A.M.S. in 2008, so that their son, Logan, who was born with spina bifida, could participate in activities and sports along with other kids with special needs. "DREAMS began when we were sitting at a baseball game one day and Logan looked over at us and asked, 'When am I going to get to play?' It stopped us in our tracks." Logan Watkins was the inspiration behind the DREAMS Foundation of Acadiana. His indomitable spirit is a source of joy for all who know him. There were no organized sports activities of any kind for children with special needs. Donielle found a program that had had some success up North and established a Little League with fifty kids with special needs. After the ball game was over, Logan looked at his mom and asked, "When does basketball start?" Logan just wanted to be like every other kid. The acronym, D.R.E.A.M.S., stands for Disability, Resources, Education, Activities, Management, and Services. DREAMS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit serving 700 kids in Lafayette, Vermilion, Iberia, and St. Martin Parishes. Participants enjoy year-round activities such as basketball, softball, soccer, bowling, gardening, cheer, dance, music therapy, swimming, art, theater, and fitness classes. It boggled Donielle's mind how fast DREAMS grew. Many volunteers stepped up to offer arts, gardening, and sports activities. Individuals such as Damon Vincent of TrainUnique have even gone on to open a professional gym for people with special needs and provide for his family. DREAMS welcomes all and has participants from five years of age to 60 years of age, with many having Downs syndrome, autism, or cerebral palsy. "When you have a child with special needs, you accept certain things. He'll never play football. You accept that it's a new way of life. But who doesn't accept it? Little Logan. When we were sitting at a baseball game one day and he looked over at us and asked, 'When am I going to play?' it stopped us in our tracks." With a small budget, Donielle works hard to spread the word of DREAMS' work. Many people who would benefit don't know DREAMS exists. The 2010 Census indicated that 12,000 individuals in Lafayette parish would benefit from this service. The need is great and there is much work to be done. With a full-time job as an accountant, Donielle Watkins spends all of her spare time working to grow the reach of DREAMS. Her husband and Co-Director of DREAMS, Brian, is a special education teacher at St. Thomas More high school in the Options program; In 2014, Brian was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Louisiana Governor's Office for Special Needs. D.R.E.A.M.S. Manufacturing Company has recently been established to create jobs for individuals with special needs in the Lafayette community. This work was jump-started by a $25,000 grant from the La. Department of Revenue and a donation of $5,000 to pay for wrapping the food truck. Currently staffed by 21 employees with unique needs, they manufacture ten different types of Kane River Meat Pies that are baked and sold at 12 grocers across Acadiana. At special events where they bring the food truck, you can purchase 2 stuffed pies and chips for $10.00 Donielle loves to bring the meat pies to businesses and will pre-contract with businesses that have 50 or more employees to bring the truck for lunches. "Eventually we'll be the Subway of meat pies," Donielle says. With tempting offerings such as boudin & cheese, spicy Mediterranean beef, and chicken alfredo, she may just be right! Donielle's long-term goal is to build Unity Village Community, a safe, independent living space for people 18 years old and up with special needs. She has worked on this for years and of course,
Damon Vincent, owner of Unique Health & Fitness (currently being rebranded as TrainUnique) in Lafayette joins Discover Lafayette to share his passion for helping others. Damon has dedicated his professional career to helping athletes with special needs. A young man of 26, Damon grew up with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, a condition that prevents adrenal glands from producing sufficient cortisol. While his parents allowed him to have a normal life by playing football, wrestling, and riding dirt bikes, he was always on medication and had to wear a medic alert. He was "hell-bent on pushing himself" and didn't want his condition to hold him back. The experience shaped Damon's mindset and he is following his personal and professional calling to empower others, especially individuals who have special needs. His work with people of all backgrounds led him to partner with the DREAMS Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals with special needs. In August 2020, Damon opened Unique Health and Fitness, Louisiana's first and only dedicated fitness and health center for Unique Individuals. DREAMS' founder, Donielle Watkins, helped Damon get Unique Fitness off the ground; today, All of DREAMS' meetings, art programs, cheer practices, etc. are held at the facility. "We couldn't have gotten started without the help of Donielle and DREAMS." "I was blessed to find my calling at an early age. I wanted to provide a place of belonging in a community that was really focused on the communal aspect of getting better together. It's a group of people coming together with the same end goal in mind, to be fitter, healthier, and more independent. I'm a fitness professional and this is how I know how to do that....at the gym. It's a mission of community and self-improvement. Always striving, never giving up." Damon says of this special population (which can include people with cerebral palsy, Spina Bifida, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, autism, and Downs syndrome), "They are champions on their own. These individuals already have it mentally. They've been fighting their whole lives They've had to work so hard all their lives and have not been able to make excuses. So when they come into the gym, it's about equipping them with the tools and opportunities to let that shine out. That's why I love it so much! It's different than working with the general population. Pictured are members of Unique Health and Fitness, soon to be rebranded TrainUnique. Damon's new studio is located at 133 Digby Avenue, Lafayette LA. Damon has partnered with the Gladiators Academy of Lafayette and Ignite Fitness Club at this new facility. While people of all ages are welcome, the club focuses mainly on teens and adults and offers a full-on fitness program after therapy. Damon provides a professional and comprehensive fitness solution designed for all individuals who need a Unique approach to fitness for their Cognitive or Physical needs. He wants to see people moving and being fit their entire lives. Damon mentioned that while there are typically a lot of therapies available for children, once a person reaches their teens and moves into adult life, those opportunities can dwindle. The gym is a place for "unique people to move and be fit their entire lives." You won't see weight machines at this gym as the lack of neuromuscular engagement involved with machines is not helpful to individuals with special needs. Free weights offer optimal resistance training and give the athletes the ability to learn to control their movements. It also makes the athletes stronger and gives them the independence to be able to lift themselves, go to festivals, get out and enjoy life. Flexibility and cardiovascular fitness are also targeted. The athletes recently enjoyed competing in the club's "Unique Olympics" and there was serious competition going on in categories such as martial arts,

There are so many ways to identify, describe, and honor the human experience. As we focus on and broaden our perspectives on those, who are marginalized, specifically those with disabilities, there are many terms and concepts to describe the disability and rare disease experience, and the language always changes. Kendra tells the story of how she was a runway model in 2016 for Tommy Hilfiger in New York for the Runway of Dreams Foundation. We discuss her first book, Live Laugh Lemonade: A Journey of Choosing to Beat the Odds, and what was happening in her life when she wrote it. Her next book is a children's book called Kendra's Lemondate which she wrote to help kids and others understand disabilities. Her most recent book is Kendra's Perfect Dance Routine, about her dance experience as a child. A nostalgic look back at our favorite hockey hero's who wore the red, white and blue for the Rangers during the 1960's,70's and 80's. *In episode number 46 Tom, Rob and Mike discuss the Great Career of former Rangers Right Winger and "Hall Of Famer" Rod Gilbert who passed away this past August. They also touch on the roster moves made this past summer by Chris Drury and how the team may preform to start the season. *Gilbert was unquestionably the Greatest "homegrown" player to ever spend their entire career with the Rangers as well as the greatest right wing to ever play for the club. * Gilbert holds the Rangers all time record for Goals 406 and career points 1021 * Also known as "Mr. Ranger" Gilbert played right wing on what most hockey experts believe is the longest tenured number 1 line in history. Almost 10 years a member of the GAG line with Vic Hadfield and childhood friend Jean Ratelle. Gilbert was known for his fast skating, booming slap shot ,quick release and willingness to play hard and physical on every shift despite not being one of the bigger players in the league. He also had a mental toughness and resiliency that allowed him to overcome several horrific injuries including two major back surgeries that threatened his career. * Played 19 years for the Rangers * Averaged almost a point per game during both the regular season and playoffs *Inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1982 *Childhood friend of Jean Ratelle that resulted in being teammates in Pee wee, Juniors, Minor leagues and finally with the Rangers * Played in 8 All-Star games * First Rangers player to have his No. 7 retired at MSG, the first to receive the honor * Won the Bill Masterson Trophy in 1976 and the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1991 * Associated with the Rangers as an ambassador for the club leading many projects throughout the community including the Garden of Dreams Foundation and serving as President of the Rangers alumni association. * Tom's fondest memory of Rod Gilbert was his game 4 winning overtime goal against the Flyers at MSG during the 1973-74 playoffs . * The guys also discussed the upcoming 2021-22 season for the Rangers and how the FA signings and trades made during the summer will impact the club this season and beyond. * Will Goodrow, Reaves and Blais make the Rangers a tougher team to play against ? * Are the youngsters finally ready to take a giant leap forward and distinguish themselves as future Rangers stars leading to a playoff birth ?

In this week's episode of Start Somewhere, I'm so delighted to speak to the incredible Mindy Scheier. Mindy is the Founder of the Runway of Dreams Foundation, which aims to make adaptive clothing mainstream and promote people with disabilities in the fashion industry. Mindy has also created Gamut Talent Management to represent people with disabilities and create a marketplace where businesses and industries can connect to this target audience. Before starting the Runway of Dreams Foundation, Mindy spent 20 years working in fashion as a designer and stylist. She was inspired to start Runway of Dreams after her son Oliver, who has Muscular Dystrophy, dreamed of wearing jeans like everyone else. In this episode, we speak about the moment when Mindy started somewhere and challenged the fashion industry to become more inclusive, the everyday challenges disabled people face, and why adaptive fashion holds the key to confidence and self-expression. The ask: There is no such thing as failure because failure is feedback. Always focus on your goal and dare to be flexible in how you get there. Mindy Scheier's journey began when her son Oliver, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends, but couldn't manage the buttons or zippers. She realized then that millions of people around the world must also be struggling to access fashionable clothing that meets their needs. She began to envision a world where all styles of clothing were available with modifications that would make them accessible for people with disabilities. After spending 20 years in the fashion industry and opening a design school for kids, Mindy decided to combine her experience and her passion to address this unmet need by founding the Runway of Dreams Foundation.Visit: Runway of DreamsCheck out: Gamut Management Looking for more great tips, hacks and blogposts? Insomnia and vivid dreams are on the rise with COVID-19 anxiety. Our guest, Craig Sim Webb is a Speaker/Author/Researcher on dreams, applied psychology and consciousness, as well as a physicist and biomedical inventor. Craig has served as a featured author and expert on SyFy and the BBC and for two decades has headed the non-profit Dreams Foundation. He will join us analyze how stress and uncertainty results in sleep irregularities which reflects in our dreams. With coronavirus, stay-at-home orders, anxiety and low activity during the day can make it harder to get a good night’s sleep, and frequently waking up during the night can increase the likelihood that dreams are remembered the next day. The buzz: The fashion industry is starting to care about people with disabilities…designing apparel, shoes and other products for consumers with non-standard body types, boosting an overlooked population's confidence – and their own bottom lines” cbsnews.com). When you got dressed today, other than deciding what to wear, was it EASY? Not if you have a disability that makes it challenging to use buttons, snaps, zippers, hooks, or pull on shirts and pants. Where to find “stylish adaptive clothing” with easy-on-off features? Many mainstream clothing retailers mostly ignore Americans with disabilities, despite their total disposable income of $490B. Can technologies like AI algorithms, robotics, and 3D printing help manufacturers adapt production processes to this market? Erik, Jeff, and Dave connected with Mindy to talk about the leaps and bounds she's made in the field of accessible fashion for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. Although she had been in the fashion world for years she was unaware of the lack of consideration given to those with alternate needs until her son, Oliver, who was born with muscular dystrophy, wanted to fit in with his friends - fashion-wise. “In my entire career in fashion there was never a thought of the challenges people with disabilities faced.” Mindy talked about the emotional and personal struggles that came with having a child with a disability that wasn't immediately diagnosable and how ultimately her situation provided inspiration to help others. “I could help not just Oliver’s life but the millions of people out there who are experiencing the same thing. This gave me a sense of purpose in a situation where I felt helpless.” Our hosts dive into the Pioneering process Mindy went through from creating jeans in her living room to having an accessible line with Tommy Hilfiger and founding RoDF. Listen and let us know what you think and subscribe to hear more No Barriers stories. Check out Mindy's Runway of Dreams Foundation and keep up with their latest news!
Look, the internet has created vast amounts of opportunity, no matter what your foundation is... Frankly, I'm of the mindset that if you have faced adversity that you're actually better off than people who haven't faced adversity because you're hungry and willing to put in the work to get yours. Humbled that I was given the opportunity to give this talk at the Precious Dreams Foundation - let me know what your thoughts on this podcast on twitter @GaryVee ;)
As a leader in the fashion industry for 20+ years, in 2014 Mindy Scheier found herself on a journey discovering the huge need for adaptive clothing when her then 8 year son, Oliver, expressed the daily act of getting dressed and buttoning jeans was too hard and setting him apart from his peers. Oliver was diagnosed a few years prior with a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy, SEPN1 related myopathy. This episode covers the Scheier family’s diagnostic journey, Mindy's discovery into the world of adaptive clothing, and the formation of the Runway of Dreams Foundation. This mama bear on a mission shares how she set out to change and influence the fashion industry, inspire via TED talks, and impact brand names such as: Tommy Adaptive | Tommy Hilfiger USA, Target Adaptive, Zappos Adaptive, and Nike FlyEase. Runway of Dreams aims to be the authority on incorporating modifications to mainstream clothing for the differently-abled community, changing the landscape of fashion as being ALL-INCLUSIVE. Mindy Scheier is the founder of the nonprofit, Runway of Dreams Foundation. Prior to launching the nonprofit, Mindy spent over 20 years working in fashion as a key member of the design team for the INC collection and stylist for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. Mindy’s career path took a new direction when her son Oliver, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy causing physical disabilities, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends. That night, she used her background in design to adapt a pair that not only met his needs, but increased his confidence. She soon realized that millions of people around the globe were also struggling to access fashionable clothing. She used her experience in fashion to develop modifications — including magnetic closures, adjustability of waistbands, pant and sleeve lengths and alternative ways to get in and out of the clothing — to meet a wide variety of needs within the differently-abled community. After pounding the fashion pavement, Runway of Dreams collaborated with Tommy Hilfiger on the first ever-mainstream adaptive clothing line for kids in Spring 2016. Founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need, the Runway of Dreams Foundation develops, delivers and supports initiatives to broaden the reach of mainstream adaptive clothing and promote the differently-abled community in the fashion industry.
Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation is a manifestation of the passion of the Fisher family for seniors and for aviation. To understand this passion and the history of the Foundation, you need only look at the personal and professional legacy of the Fisher Family. William L. and Dorothy Fisher started the family’s aviation heritage in 1940. Their love for the freedom of flight now transcends through four generations of pilots. William purchased a Stearman for $1,200 but later sold the airplane. They also had a very soft spot in their hearts for the aging and, in 1965, decided to open a senior health care facility in Roseburg, Oregon. Since then, aviation and senior care and service have become a lifetime priority for 3 generations of the Fisher family. In the spring of 2011, William Fisher, son of William L. and Dorothy, and his son Darryl, decided to fulfill a life-long dream. They traveled throughout the United States, giving veterans and seniors in long-term care communities, an opportunity to fly in a newly restored Boeing Stearman aircraft. Darryl was so moved by the positive emotions generated by the trip that he and his wife, Carol, decided to establish the non-profit organization, Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, as a tribute to seniors and United States veterans. Carol Fisher states, “The Fisher’s have always enjoyed sharing their love of aviation with anyone and everyone that has an interest in flying. Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation is the Fisher family’s way of giving back to those that sacrificed so much to help build this great nation”.
