For 25 years, Sam Schmidt has been a beloved figure in the IndyCar Series, first as a driver, then as a team owner and a champion of innovation, persistence and the human spirit. During a practice session in Florida in 2000, he lost control of his car and smashed into a concrete barrier at around 180 miles per hour. Doctors saved his life, but he has been paralyzed from the shoulders down ever since. Within about a year, he had started a racing team, as well as a not-for-profit group dedicated to raising funds for medical research, developing innovative equipment for rehabilitation and helping people with severe mobility issues navigate their lives again. Schmidt announced this month that the group, now called Conquer Paralysis Now, would be moving its headquarters from Las Vegas to the former home of Five Seasons Family Sports Club on 96th Street, right on the border between Indianapolis and Carmel. The facility also will house CPN's second Driven NeuroRecovery Center, offering fitness programs, adaptive sports, aquatics, physical and occupational therapy and mental health services. CPN expects to invest $22 million in the whole project, including the nearly $8 million that it already has paid to purchase the property. In this week's edition of the podcast, Schmidt shares his story of recovery from a near fatal injury and how he uses it to help inspire others with mobility issues. He explains why he wanted to move his not-for-profit to the Indy area, as well as his vision for how the Driven Center will work with many of the big players in central Indiana's medical community. And he discusses his plans to create Driven Centers across the country—as many as 25 within five years. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
George Whitten, along with his wife Julie, own Blue Range Ranch (also known as San Juan Ranch) located in the high desert of Colorado's San Luis Valley. Originally pastoralists, George and his family have been ranching on the same land for well over a century, and have been practicing regenerative agriculture and holistic land management since 1893, long before either of those terms even existed. Sam Schmidt, a New York City-area native, joined the ranch in 2020 through an apprentice program, and is now the Assistant Ranch Manager, alongside his partner Noelle. George, Sam and I speak about the rise and fall of industrial agriculture, the challenges of making a living from land stewardship, what it means to bridge the divide between environmentalism and agriculture, and how taking a regenerative and holistic approach to the land also means applying those same principles to our relationships and communities.Find Blue Range Ranch at bluerangeranch.com, on Instagram, and learn more about the ranch's apprenticeship program here. For those local to Crestone and the SLV, check out my article about Blue Range Ranch in the June edition of The Crestone Eagle.Songs featured: “El Jardin” by Hermanos Gutiérrez & “The Universe” by Gregory Alan IsakovSign up for the MGSW book club here.Join myself and Christopher Ryan + Cameron and Melayne Shayne in Montana this summer for the Sex at Dawn retreat, August 20-25. Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they start examining the possible drivers that could be out of a contract after this season, debate what team Marcus Ericsson would go to if he and Chip Ganassi don't come to terms on a new contract following the comments he made last year, how important this month is for the future of drivers with their team, and if you would take a Chip Ganassi car or the field. Additionally, Kevin and Curt share some news of the day regarding an injury to a driver and a statement that was made in an interview earlier in the day from Sam Schmidt regarding the future of Tony Kanaan with Arrow McLaren.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Colts schedule was released yesterday, Kevin and Query run down the schedule and try to predict how the Colts will handle it this year. Indianapolis doesn't have any prime-time games this season. Is Amazon punishing the Colts for that lackluster Broncos game last season with no Thursday night games this year? The Phoenix Suns fell flat in a Game 6 elimination game at home, down by 30 points at one time. The Indiana Pacers have their first draft workout today, hosting a total of six players. (26:45 - 31:18) - Morning Checkdown (31:19 - 43:09) - Is it pronounced GR-AND Prix, or GRAH-ND Prix? Jake breaks down where he will be sitting on the day of the race this weekend for the road course. Talk returns to the Colts schedule and what days will be best to see rookie quarterbacks from other teams, as well as when we may see Anthony Richardson. The amount of young quarterbacks that the Colts will face this year could be beneficial to the team's playoff chances. (43:10 - 1:08:04) - The Colts technically have a prime-time game against the Philadelphia Eagles.......in the pre-season. Would you rather see the Colts make the playoffs or see them receive a Top 3 pick and select Marvin Harrison Jr? Jake recalls the story of meeting his Australian pal at a Pacer's game and now it has launced into a budding friendship. Peyton Manning appeared in the Denver Bronco's schedule release video for another year in a row. He hasn't done one with the Colts. Jake goes in deep on why Manning's relationship with Indianapolis has been fractured. (1:08:05 - 1:27:09) - Offensive Tackle for the Indianapolis Colts, Bernhard Raimann joins the show and discusses his excitement in playing an NFL game in Germany which is within reasonable distance of his home country of Austria. Raimann talks about when, as a rookie, he felt it was possible to settle down and be a part of the team, and not "have his head on a swivel." As a rookie did he ever have his confidence rattled playing at such a high-profile position in Offensive Tackle. Jake wants some info on European countries to potentially visit. Raimann says any Colt's fan who visits Germany has to get a schnitzel. Talk leaves off with Raimann discussing how he has adapted to calling Indianapolis home for the past year. (1:27:10 - 1:30:26) - Little bit of talk about NFL players and how they appeared in College versus what they looked like as pros. Kevin brings up Matt Ryan at Boston College as an example. (1:30:27 - 1:59:47) - Former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt joins the program to talk racing and the Indy500. Schmidt is also hosting the 23rd Annual Racing for Recovery event that benefits Paralysis Now. Schmidt goes into detail about his own personal recovery and journey with paralysis as well as how he has helped to open facilities across America that help people from all over deal with their disability. The Racing to Recovery Gala, hosted at the Roof Ballroom serves as an event that allows racers and race fans to take a brief break from competition and unite for a common cause. Jake briefly revisist Schmidt's appearance on the classic TV show "Press You Luck" which he managed to make three consecutive appearances on. Turning towards the 500 and the team Schmidt is involved with in Arrow-Mclaren, Schmidt hypes up his drivers, details what they have to do to win and the importance of the event. The event can be viewed online and bid on virtually as well. (1:59:48 - 2:09:20) - Pop Quiz (2:09:21 - 2:18:51) - Wrap up on Colts schedule excitement or lack there of, and weekend plans. Sam Schmidt is the Co-Owner of Arrow McLaren SP, an Indycar racing team comprised of two determined racing entities, McLaren Racing and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. That ambition is shared and supported by title partner Arrow Electronics. Sam grew up working on race cars and in 1997 embarked on his racing career as an Indycar driver. Two years later he took his first win in Las Vegas and finished 5th in the 1999 championship. In January of the following year, during off-season testing at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Sam suffered a massive crash. After being airlifted to a nearby hospital he was later diagnosed as a quadriplegic due to a severe injury on the C-3 and C-4 levels of his spinal cord. Despite no longer being able to race himself, Sam showed immense courage as within 14 months of the accident he had created the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation as well as Sam Schmidt Motorsports, now Arrow McLaren SP. Mike and Sam cover a ton of great stuff in this episode:how his father inspired his incredible work ethic, the life-changing crash and self-described “hell-on-earth” experience of being on a ventilator and his transition off of it, his no-excuses approach to being a quadriplegic and his high expectations for people with spinal cords injuries, how Arrow Electronics team of engineers created a control system in his car so he could drive a car around Indianapolis Speedway at 150 mph, racing his Arrow Electronics C7 Corvette up legendary and dangerous Pikes Peak, his plans for voice activation controls in his new Arrow Electronics SAM C8 Corvette, how he believes that type of control system and technology can be embedded in industrial applications to help disabled people get back to work, and how the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation is changing outcomes of people with spinal cord injuries, and much more. Despite no longer being able to race himself, Sam showed immense courage as within 14 months of the accident he had created the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation as well as Sam Schmidt Motorsports, now Arrow McLaren SP.Mike and Sam cover a ton of great stuff in this episode like how his father inspired his incredible work ethic, the life-changing crash and self-described “hell on earth” experience of being on a ventilator and his transition off of it, his no-excuses approach to being a quadriplegic and his high expectations for people with spinal cords injuries, how Arrow Electronics team of engineers created a control system in his car so he could drive a car around Indianapolis Speedway at 150 mph, racing his Arrow Electronics C7 Corvette up legendary and dangerous Pikes Peak, his plans for voice activation controls in his new Arrow Electronics SAM C8 Corvette, how he believes that type of control system and technology can be embedded industrial applications to help disabled people get back to work, and how the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation is changing outcomes of people with spinal cord injuries, and much more.Learn more about Sam Schmidt at:https://arrowmclarensp.com/https://twitter.com/samschmidtcpnhttps://www.instagram.com/sam.schmidt_/https://www.conquerparalysisnow.org/If you like this episode and want to be the first to know when new ones are released? Indy car driver Sam Schmidt was paralysed from the shoulders down when he reversed into a wall at 200 miles an hour. This summer, and more than 20 years after his accident, Sam made his second racing debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. He drives using a special straw that he “sips and puffs” to accelerate and brake, and cameras that use his head movements to steer. BBC Disability Correspondent Nikki Fox chats to Sam about learning to drive again and how this technology could help other disabled people get behind the wheel. Produced by Drew Miller Hyndman. This week's podcast: A few years back, engineers created the SAM car, a vehicle that enabled quadriplegic former Indy racer Sam Schmidt to drive again. Now they've followed with the SAM suit, an exoskeleton that let Schmidt dance with his daughter at her wedding. Sam, the SAM car, and the SAM suit, with Arrow Electronics chief marketing officer Victor Gustaf Gao.
That's a legit title, even if it's shameless clickbait from what is actually a really cool story about Nate getting to drive Sam Schmidt's SAM car. Also in this episode, Chris still hasn't realised nobody agrees with him on the Norris/Perez penalty, and Lawrence is delirious after a triple-header so ruins a joke. Plus, you get the chance to set Nate a challenge...
