This year has felt like there've been a series of large sports mega events and summits planned and taking place in cities across the USA. For instance, starting in June the FIFA World Cup will be hosted in cities across the country (as well as a few in Mexico and Canada). Also a few cities are hosting meetings and an eventual summit related to the G20, or group of 20 economies, a gathering between large capitalist industries, banks, para-grovernmental neoliberal international institutions, government ministries and heads of state that share policy decisions effecting immigration, wars, trade policy and the climate. In 2028 Los Angeles will host the Olympics. This episode will feature two discussions about some of the security impacts of hosting large sports or political events and the ways that the state and capital work to change the landscape and norms of the locations they take place. First up, Kristian Williams speaks about National Special Security Events like the G20 or World Cup, how they change local police and surveillance landscapes and work to turbocharge gentrification and displace working and poor people, making our cities more hostile to anything but commerce and control. Then, you'll hear from Sam Schmidt at Our Streets Collective to speak about homeless sweeps in Pittsburgh, PA in the run-up to and aftermath of the 2026 NFL Draft taking place in that city. Sam Schmidt has had a long and successful career at the top level of auto racing. From humble beginnings riding a mini-bike, to visiting Victory Lane as an Indy car driver, his success has continued as a team owner. The ownership side was instigated after a terrible crash in testing an Indy car at the oval in Orlando, Florida which left him a quadriplegic. His Indy Lights and Indy car team ownership has earned him accolades as he set records with his team's success. You'll still find Sam at the race track, and now he will also be known as an author, with his new book (No Finish Line) coming out on May 19, 2026. I met up with Sam during the 2026 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach where he graciously spent some time filling us in on his journey. Enjoy!NOTE: Sam's autobiography “No Finish Line” is currently available for pre-order and will be in stores on May 19, 2026.

Ep. 261: Just months after winning his first IndyCar race, Sam Schmidt hit a wall at nearly 200 miles per hour during preseason testing. He was paralyzed from the neck down at 35 years old. Doctors told his wife he wouldn't make it through the night. Twenty five years later, Sam has co-founded championship racing teams, driven a car at 107 miles per hour using only his head, stood in an exoskeleton to dance with his daughter on her wedding day, and built a foundation helping thousands of others get the rehabilitation they would never otherwise receive. In No Finish Line, his new memoir—which I had the honor of co-authoring with him—Sam shows what resilience looks like when life refuses to follow the script. ——— Do you want to write a book? Hometown Radio 03/18/26 4p: Guest host Jeff Bliss talks to former Indy racer Sam Schmidt talks about his nonprofit dedicated to curing paralysis & his book
Are you asking God about your big decisions in life? Are you talking to Him in both good and hard times? In this episode, Jeff and Sam discuss: Lessons learned from life-changing events.Pushing through and finding strength in your purpose and cause.Learning how to trust others and delegate for greater success and influence.Knowing what to invest in and what not to invest in each day. Key Takeaways: If you find the right people, you give them the resources and tell them to do things, they're pretty good at it. You will find more success in lifting others and letting them do the work they can do.Technology is the key to putting people with disabilities back to work.It doesn't take too many degrees of separation for most people to find somebody within their family or their friend group who needs accessibility either now or in the future.Remember who is in control. There is a higher power leading you to the right decisions and opening doors. It is up to you to follow Him. "I used to think passion and purpose were the same thing, and then it's been an evolution. But I really think racing is my passion; DRIVEN, which is the name of the facilities, is my purpose." — Sam Schmidt About Sam Schmidt: Sam Schmidt was born in Lincoln, NE, and moved to CA as a toddler. He attended Pepperdine University, receiving a BS in Business Administration in 1986 and an MBA in International Finance in 1987.Following in his father's footsteps, Sam developed an unmeasured interest in motorsports. His goal was to race in the Indianapolis 500.In 1997, he made his 1st IndyCar start. He raced in 3 consecutive Indy 500s and netted his 1st victory from the pole at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1999, finishing the year 5th in series points. During testing in preparation for the 2000 season, Sam suffered a crash on January 6, 2000, which rendered him a quadriplegic. Though no longer able to drive a racecar, Sam was still passionate about the sport. Inspired by meeting paraplegic F1 team owner Sir Frank Williams, he founded Sam Schmidt Motorsports, now the most successful team in the history of the Firestone Indy Lights Series. At the end of 2024, Sam sold the IndyCar team to the McLaren F1 organization so that he could focus on the foundation. After his accident, Sam and a few close friends founded the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, which was rebranded Conquer Paralysis Now (CPN) in 2015. The Foundation has funded research on a global level, providing grants to organizations benefiting the disabled and providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.CPN has embarked on a major initiative to spark collaboration among researchers on an international level to find cures and treatments for paralysis. In 2018, the DRIVEN Neuro Recovery Center was opened in downtown Las Vegas as a program of CPN. The facility provides activity-based therapy, an open gym, and many programs for anyone with a neurological disorder. In 2024, CPN opened a flagship 114K sqft DRIVEN center in Carmel, IN, with hopes of creating more facilities around the country.Sam lives in Henderson, NV, with his wife of 33 years, Sheila. Säm peab end heaks kuulajaks – inimeseks, kellega on lihtne leida ühist keelt. Empaatiavõime pärineb tema sõnul emalt, ettevõtlikkus isalt. Kuna ta on suuresti üles kasvanud naiste keskel, peab ta end isegi natuke feminiinseks. Külas on Sam Schmidt ja saatejuht on Kerli Kivistu.

For 25 years, Sam Schmidt has been a beloved figure in the IndyCar Series, first as a driver, then as a team owner and a champion of innovation, persistence and the human spirit. During a practice session in Florida in 2000, he lost control of his car and smashed into a concrete barrier at around 180 miles per hour. Doctors saved his life, but he has been paralyzed from the shoulders down ever since. Within about a year, he had started a racing team, as well as a not-for-profit group dedicated to raising funds for medical research, developing innovative equipment for rehabilitation and helping people with severe mobility issues navigate their lives again. Schmidt announced this month that the group, now called Conquer Paralysis Now, would be moving its headquarters from Las Vegas to the former home of Five Seasons Family Sports Club on 96th Street, right on the border between Indianapolis and Carmel. The facility also will house CPN's second Driven NeuroRecovery Center, offering fitness programs, adaptive sports, aquatics, physical and occupational therapy and mental health services. CPN expects to invest $22 million in the whole project, including the nearly $8 million that it already has paid to purchase the property. In this week's edition of the podcast, Schmidt shares his story of recovery from a near fatal injury and how he uses it to help inspire others with mobility issues. He explains why he wanted to move his not-for-profit to the Indy area, as well as his vision for how the Driven Center will work with many of the big players in central Indiana's medical community. And he discusses his plans to create Driven Centers across the country—as many as 25 within five years. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.
George Whitten, along with his wife Julie, own Blue Range Ranch (also known as San Juan Ranch) located in the high desert of Colorado's San Luis Valley. Originally pastoralists, George and his family have been ranching on the same land for well over a century, and have been practicing regenerative agriculture and holistic land management since 1893, long before either of those terms even existed. Sam Schmidt, a New York City-area native, joined the ranch in 2020 through an apprentice program, and is now the Assistant Ranch Manager, alongside his partner Noelle. George, Sam and I speak about the rise and fall of industrial agriculture, the challenges of making a living from land stewardship, what it means to bridge the divide between environmentalism and agriculture, and how taking a regenerative and holistic approach to the land also means applying those same principles to our relationships and communities.Find Blue Range Ranch at bluerangeranch.com, on Instagram, and learn more about the ranch's apprenticeship program here. For those local to Crestone and the SLV, check out my article about Blue Range Ranch in the June edition of The Crestone Eagle.Songs featured: “El Jardin” by Hermanos Gutiérrez & “The Universe” by Gregory Alan IsakovSign up for the MGSW book club here.Join myself and Christopher Ryan + Cameron and Melayne Shayne in Montana this summer for the Sex at Dawn retreat, August 20-25. Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they start examining the possible drivers that could be out of a contract after this season, debate what team Marcus Ericsson would go to if he and Chip Ganassi don't come to terms on a new contract following the comments he made last year, how important this month is for the future of drivers with their team, and if you would take a Chip Ganassi car or the field. Additionally, Kevin and Curt share some news of the day regarding an injury to a driver and a statement that was made in an interview earlier in the day from Sam Schmidt regarding the future of Tony Kanaan with Arrow McLaren.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
(00:00 - 26:43) - A rainy Friday morning greets this morning's edition of Kevin & Query. The GMR Grand Prix is tomorrow and there is a chance of rain ruining the festivities. The Colts schedule was released yesterday, Kevin and Query run down the schedule and try to predict how the Colts will handle it this year. Indianapolis doesn't have any prime-time games this season. Is Amazon punishing the Colts for that lackluster Broncos game last season with no Thursday night games this year? The Phoenix Suns fell flat in a Game 6 elimination game at home, down by 30 points at one time. The Indiana Pacers have their first draft workout today, hosting a total of six players. (26:45 - 31:18) - Morning Checkdown (31:19 - 43:09) - Is it pronounced GR-AND Prix, or GRAH-ND Prix? Jake breaks down where he will be sitting on the day of the race this weekend for the road course. Talk returns to the Colts schedule and what days will be best to see rookie quarterbacks from other teams, as well as when we may see Anthony Richardson. The amount of young quarterbacks that the Colts will face this year could be beneficial to the team's playoff chances. (43:10 - 1:08:04) - The Colts technically have a prime-time game against the Philadelphia Eagles.......in the pre-season. Would you rather see the Colts make the playoffs or see them receive a Top 3 pick and select Marvin Harrison Jr? Jake recalls the story of meeting his Australian pal at a Pacer's game and now it has launced into a budding friendship. Peyton Manning appeared in the Denver Bronco's schedule release video for another year in a row. He hasn't done one with the Colts. Jake goes in deep on why Manning's relationship with Indianapolis has been fractured. (1:08:05 - 1:27:09) - Offensive Tackle for the Indianapolis Colts, Bernhard Raimann joins the show and discusses his excitement in playing an NFL game in Germany which is within reasonable distance of his home country of Austria. Raimann talks about when, as a rookie, he felt it was possible to settle down and be a part of the team, and not "have his head on a swivel." As a rookie did he ever have his confidence rattled playing at such a high-profile position in Offensive Tackle. Jake wants some info on European countries to potentially visit. Raimann says any Colt's fan who visits Germany has to get a schnitzel. Talk leaves off with Raimann discussing how he has adapted to calling Indianapolis home for the past year. (1:27:10 - 1:30:26) - Little bit of talk about NFL players and how they appeared in College versus what they looked like as pros. Kevin brings up Matt Ryan at Boston College as an example. (1:30:27 - 1:59:47) - Former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt joins the program to talk racing and the Indy500. Schmidt is also hosting the 23rd Annual Racing for Recovery event that benefits Paralysis Now. Schmidt goes into detail about his own personal recovery and journey with paralysis as well as how he has helped to open facilities across America that help people from all over deal with their disability. The Racing to Recovery Gala, hosted at the Roof Ballroom serves as an event that allows racers and race fans to take a brief break from competition and unite for a common cause. Jake briefly revisist Schmidt's appearance on the classic TV show "Press You Luck" which he managed to make three consecutive appearances on. Turning towards the 500 and the team Schmidt is involved with in Arrow-Mclaren, Schmidt hypes up his drivers, details what they have to do to win and the importance of the event. The event can be viewed online and bid on virtually as well. (1:59:48 - 2:09:20) - Pop Quiz (2:09:21 - 2:18:51) - Wrap up on Colts schedule excitement or lack there of, and weekend plans. Sam Schmidt is the Co-Owner of Arrow McLaren SP, an Indycar racing team comprised of two determined racing entities, McLaren Racing and Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. That ambition is shared and supported by title partner Arrow Electronics. Sam grew up working on race cars and in 1997 embarked on his racing career as an Indycar driver. Two years later he took his first win in Las Vegas and finished 5th in the 1999 championship. In January of the following year, during off-season testing at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Sam suffered a massive crash. After being airlifted to a nearby hospital he was later diagnosed as a quadriplegic due to a severe injury on the C-3 and C-4 levels of his spinal cord. Despite no longer being able to race himself, Sam showed immense courage as within 14 months of the accident he had created the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation as well as Sam Schmidt Motorsports, now Arrow McLaren SP. Mike and Sam cover a ton of great stuff in this episode:how his father inspired his incredible work ethic, the life-changing crash and self-described “hell-on-earth” experience of being on a ventilator and his transition off of it, his no-excuses approach to being a quadriplegic and his high expectations for people with spinal cords injuries, how Arrow Electronics team of engineers created a control system in his car so he could drive a car around Indianapolis Speedway at 150 mph, racing his Arrow Electronics C7 Corvette up legendary and dangerous Pikes Peak, his plans for voice activation controls in his new Arrow Electronics SAM C8 Corvette, how he believes that type of control system and technology can be embedded in industrial applications to help disabled people get back to work, and how the Conquer Paralysis Now Foundation is changing outcomes of people with spinal cord injuries, and much more.
