POPULARITY
Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts' owner who leveraged the popularity of Peyton Manning into a new stadium and a Super Bowl title, died Wednesday at age 65. The Indy 500 has only had two Black drivers in its history — Willy T. Ribbs and George Mack. Nine international students in Indiana are no longer subject to immediate deportation. States across the country improved policies and supports for maternal mental health – but only slightly. Want to go deeper on the stories you hear on WFYI News Now? Have an episode suggestion? Text us!In Part Two of our High Agency series, Matt and Paige dive even deeper into what it really means to live a high agency life—and what gets in the way.We unpack the traps that keep people stuck: the vague trap, the midwit trap, the rumination trap, and the overwhelm trap. We talk about defining problems clearly, trusting your gut, experimenting with bold choices, and taking the smallest next step to break through analysis paralysis. You'll also hear:The “Evil Twin” thought experiment: What would the most high-agency version of you do?How to stop chasing clarity and start earning it through actionWhy even painful or imperfect action is better than passive confusionThe truth about trade-offs: there is no perfect decision, only movementThe difference between controlling others and influencing outcomes with integrityValue Activation: the drill that helps you stop talking about your values and actually live themA framework for turning bullshit into reality—from journaling and wishing to doing and becomingWe also explore how to break down overwhelming problems into levels—just like video games do—and how taking action, even imperfectly, is what creates momentum, healing, and growth. This episode will help you shift from vibes to reality, from inspiration to execution, and from feeling stuck to living on purpose. You don't need more clarity—you need more courage.Head over to highagency.com to read the work of George Mack that inspired this episode. Modern Wisdom Key Takeaways Everything is an agency issue; all problems are solvable with enough knowledgeAll the progress that the human species has made is due to agency; from the air conditioned rooms we sit in, to the clothes we wear, to the cars we drive – everything is agencyThe four ingredients for high agency: clear thinking, resourcefulness, bias to action, disagreeability Avoid the Rumination Trap, which is a mental loop where overthinking disguise itself as problem-solving but actually leads to inaction, anxiety, and wasted energy If you want to be high agency, you must be intentional and decisive; mid-wits try to appear smarter than they actually are by overcomplicating thingsGeneral ambition gives you anxiety; specific ambition gives you direction Fundamentally, there is no “way” apart from the the one that works; focus on outputs instead of inputs There may be a range of outcomes in which you have the capacity to achieve, but within that range, everything is exclusively on you Inverse Charisma: The people who are most well-liked are the people who make other people feel the most interestingThere is no memory of normal; the only thing we remember about someone is their weird eccentricities – much of life consists of getting back to our childlike curiosities “High agency is the most under-discussed and most important idea in the 21st century.” – George Mack Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgSponsors: See discounts for all the products I use and recommend: https://chriswillx.com/deals Get $350 off the Pod 4 Ultra at https://eightsleep.com/modernwisdom (use code MODERNWISDOM) Get the best bloodwork analysis in America at https://functionhealth.com/modernwisdom Get a Free Sample Pack of all LMNT Flavours with your first purchase at https://drinklmnt.com/modernwisdom Get a 20% discount on the best supplements from Momentous at https://livemomentous.com/modernwisdom Extra Stuff: Get my free reading list of 100 books to read before you die: https://chriswillx.com/books Try my productivity energy drink Neutonic: https://neutonic.com/modernwisdom Episodes You Might Enjoy: #577 - David Goggins - This Is How To Master Your Life: https://tinyurl.com/43hv6y59 #712 - Dr Jordan Peterson - How To Destroy Your Negative Beliefs: https://tinyurl.com/2rtz7avf #700 - Dr Andrew Huberman - The Secret Tools To Hack Your Brain: https://tinyurl.com/3ccn5vkp - Get In Touch: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chriswillx Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/chriswillx YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/modernwisdompodcast Email: https://chriswillx.com/contact - Learn more about your ad choices. Over the past 15 years, as smartphones became ubiquitous, gamification evolved from a tool for habit formation into a mechanism used by tech giants to create psychological dependencies, similar to slot machines, with features like pull-to-refresh and infinite scroll. I've always found it interesting that we refer to people as “users” both in the context of software and substance addiction. My guest today, Ramsay Brown, studied this phenomenon deeply at the University of Southern California, where he earned a master's in neuroinformatics. His research focused on how the human brain develops habits, behaviors, and addictions. He later co-founded Dopamine Labs, aptly named for its focus on these psychological triggers. Ramsay Brown is currently grappling with these issues as the CEO of Mission Control AI, a company dedicated to helping businesses adopt generative AI technologies. Recognizing that many employees are not yet familiar with using chat interfaces like ChatGPT intuitively, Mission Control AI addresses this challenge by enabling workforces to effectively leverage AI tools. By empowering teams with these advanced technologies, Ramsay and his team help companies gain a competitive edge in their respective industries. In this episode, we explore how incentive structures in our society and economy can lead product managers and users in opposite directions regarding value creation. We discuss the responsibility of product developers to add genuine value for customers rather than merely extracting it. Ramsay's perspective, grounded in his academic background and leadership at Boundless Mind (formerly Dopamine Labs), offers a thought-provoking take on responsible product development. I hope you enjoy the episode and gain new insights into approaching product development more ethically. Unlock the full potential of your product team with Integral's player coaches, experts in lean, human-centered design. Visit integral.io/convergence for a free Product Success Lab workshop to gain clarity and confidence in tackling any product design or engineering challenge. Inside the episode... Ramsay's early interest in neuroscience and his educational journey at USC How Ramsay Brown's purpose-driven mindset and passion for solving complex problems have guided his career in various fields. Why Understanding human behavior and the brain is crucial for making meaningful interventions and driving positive change. How the availability of smartphones and the ability to collect and analyze data have created a living laboratory for studying and influencing human behavior. Why Product Managers and Designers have a responsibility to create products that respect users' attention spans and mental and emotional autonomy. How coordination and incentives play a crucial role in decision-making, and designers should consider the impact of their choices on both investors and end users. The role of behavioral engineering in creating impactful technologies Mentioned in this episode... In a market dominated by cultural preferences, Black Americans have demonstrated a significant financial commitment to the beauty and haircare industry. According to the 2018 Nielsen report, African Americans spent $54 million on beauty and haircare products in 2017.Despite the substantial spending power, Black entrepreneurs often struggle to own beauty supply stores as more than 70% of stores in the United States are owned by Korean Americans. The hold Korean Americans have on this sector can be traced back to their control over the vast majority of the supply chain, from manufacturing to distribution and retail of hair extensions. While owning a beauty supply store may be difficult for African Americans, it's not impossible, especially for those who are familiar with breaking barriers. In 2002, George Mack became the second African American driver to participate in the Indianapolis 500—following in the footsteps of Willy T. Ribbs, the first African American to compete in the event in 1991.Eventually, Mack's desire to embrace his heritage led him to rebrand himself from George Mack to Baron Bey. Transitioning from racing to entrepreneurship, he founded Coast Auto Care and Tires, a venture that resonated with his automotive enthusiasm. On this episode of "The Word with Jackie Rae," Bey shares how he navigated the challenges of transitioning from a race car driver to a thriving beauty supply store owner. Bey believes his establishment, Long Beach Hair Gallery, at 1323 Long Beach Blvd., stands as a testament to his determination and the potential for African Americans to succeed in a market that may have once seemed impenetrable.Long Beach Hair Gallery is open Monday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Coast Auto Care and Tires, is at 550 E Pacific Coast Hwy, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What's up folks, today on the show we are joined by Adriana Gil Miner. Born and raised in Venezuela, she's a 20+ year marketing exec who got her start as a data analyst and went on to work at American Express. She then worked with some of the top brands in the world after moving into PR and digital strategy at Weber Shandwick, an A-list agency according to Ad-age Adriana then ended up going through a wild growth ride leading Brand marketing at Tableau– a well known analytics platform. Today, she's CMO at Iterable, one of the top customer-led marketing automation platforms on the planet. Adriana, it's a pleasure to be chatting today, thanks so much for your time.In-house marketing vs agencyYou've had a fascinating career bouncing from agency to in-house roles. Agency for 2 years In-house for 5 years at Amex Freelance for 2 years Back to agency for 5 years at two different firms But along the way you got the in-house itch again and joined Tableau where you ran Brand marketing for 6.5 years. And you've been in-house ever since, getting the CMO gig at Qumulo and now Iterable. Talk to us about what you loved and hated most about in-house vs agency and why you ultimately settled on in-house.Follow-up: At what point in your journey did you decide you wanted to be a CMO? Was there ever a point where you considered staying IC and focusing on data vs leadership and people management? How ‘hands-on' do marketing leaders need to be in the product they sell?Jon and I are no strangers to the world of BI having both spent parts of our career at an SMB focused dashboard tool in Klipfolio. As the SVP of Brand Marketing at Tableau, how close were you to the product and how skilled would you say you had to be in data analysis? CMO of 2030 -- what should they be working on today? Storytelling, data and technologyYou've said in several places that you love bringing together the art of storytelling, technology, and marketing. Talk about some of your most memorable breakthrough campaigns that exemplify this idea bridging story, tech and marketing. The power of storytellingLet's dive a bit deeper into that. Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways for humans to learn. The best content and brand marketers know this and use it to persuade the rational and the emotional brain. How can marketers get better at storytelling? How can we make stories more relatable – practically, how can stories be more real, vulnerable when you're selling a B2B tech product?Spotting up and coming marketing superstarsYou've written about having a lot of pride in discovering and nurturing up-and-coming marketer rockstars. Walk us through your approach for discovering some of these future rockstars and what are some of the early signs and qualities you look for.Customer advocacy and community marketingSomething that was a big part of your time at Tableau was prioritizing community marketing. Walk us through some of the benefits that this can have on brand growth and customer advocacy opportunities. The relationship between how we use marketing technology and community? Why is community such an integral part of successful B2B products? Branding gets a bad rep“I don't believe in brand marketing. If you build a good product and people love it, they will share it.” I've heard too many technical CEOs say this. What do you say to a business leader that doesn't believe in brand marketing and how would you respond to that if – as CMO – your CEO walked in a room and told you that? Follow-up do you think there's anything marketers can do to change a founders mind if they don't believe in branding? Do you think founders and CEOs need to create the brand so that marketers can drive the brand?Branding vs positioning vs GMT vs demand genMarketers get a bad rep for all the buzzwords we throw around but don't all agree on what we mean when we say them: Branding Positioning Go to market Demand generation For professionals who are supposed to be good at communication, we don't do a good job at making ourselves understood. Walk us through your definitions and how we might better align with how we use them?Future of marketingThere was a viral tweet on the future of marketing last week that I thought was interesting and would love your take on. This is from George Mack, “Don't try to create great content. Instead, try to create Red Pills (dramatically transformed perspectives) that groups are thinking about but nobody is talking about.” How can marketers create more Red Pills? Being in the marketing automation space for a bit now, what do you think are some of these perspectives that need to be transformed?LatinX women in techYou've written bravely and powerfully about your experience as a Latina immigrant and shared your thoughts on the Caucasian male narrative that dominates much of the world. Talk about your change in mindset when it comes to the importance and power of checking that box despite not always feeling like you fit the stereotype people often have.Time management /staying happyOne question we ask all our guests is how do you remain happy and successful in your career? Text Hawk to 66866 for Mindful Monday Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Polina Pompliano is studying the world's most interesting people & companies. She is the Founder & Author of The Profile. Polina is a former writer at Fortune. Some of the people she's written a profile on are: Martha Stewart, Keanu Reeves, and The Rock. I am a paid subscriber and love her work. Notes: Sustained excellence comes from being obsessively curious about what you do… And knowing that failure is part of the process. It's how you choose to respond that matters. Examples: Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Martha Stewart. The advice she received from David Perell (also a previous podcast guest). He said, “Everything you put into the world is a vehicle for serendipity.” Polina wrote a profile on The Rock. She had no idea he would share it four times on all platforms. Create your own personal board of advisors. Listen to criticism, but only from people who want you to win. Only from people who care about you doing well. Not from trolls online. "Consistency is the best way to earn trust. – Name a relationship in your life where you trust someone who is inconsistent. You can't. That's because we don't trust people — whether it's in work, business, or relationships — who constantly break their promises. Since I started The Profile three years ago, I have never missed a single week." Criticism: "I once heard Kat Cole say that one of the biggest lessons she has learned after years of business experience is to put your ego aside and improve from criticism. She said, “Anytime you're criticized, assume first that it's correct.” The act of simply considering that a fraction of the criticism may be accurate will keep you learning, unlearning, fixing, and ultimately, gaining respect." How to Find Ideas: "It's about being obsessed with the details. A great idea typically masquerades as a question in a friend's text message, a quote in a documentary, a line in a book, or an observation on a walk." Creativity: "I can't get new ideas staring at a blank page. Creativity, for me, requires motion. When you go on a walk, you can turn your world into an idea-generating sensorium, and ideas will spring up from the most unlikely sources. There is one thing that's absolutely certain about creativity: It's an active process, not a passive one. The best ideas come when you become curious, aware, interested." Daniel Ek – Makers schedule versus a Managers schedule. This is from Paul Graham. I wrote it about it in my first book, Welcome to Management. Marriage: "In 2013, I asked my great-grandmother what she had learned from 53 years of marriage. She said, “When you're young and beautiful like we were, falling in love is easy. But you have to fall in love with someone's soul — because you will get old, but the soul will never change.”" "I don't like to gamble, but if there is one thing I'm willing to bet on, it's myself.” - Beyonce How to attract more luck into your life? – Written by George Mack (published by Polina) Avoid Boring People Have a luck razor Have a Poker mindset Polina desires to help you "improve your content diet." Instead of binging TV shows and scrolling through random social media, read The Profile. How to be more creative: Take a walk Allow room for serendipity Look at the footnotes of books What Polina learned from James Clear: When he doesn't read enough, he doesn't have the ideas to write about. Reading helps generate ideas. Have a stack of books everywhere in your house and office. Why leaders should write? It creates clarity of thought. "I can tell that you're thinking is sloppy if your writing is sloppy." Every single word of a post matters. It's about being precise. Precision is so important when it comes to writing. You have to clearly think it through to create precision with thought and writing. Storytelling - Get rid of the generic, fluffy writing. People enjoy profiles because it takes you inside the mind of a person. Life/Career advice: Don't tie your identity to something that can be taken away from you.

George Mack, the last African-American driver to compete in the NTT IndyCar Series, joins the Marshall Pruett Podcast for an in-depth episode of My Racing Life and Career. The Los Angeles native authored one of the most improbable open-wheel stories of the century where, with the new 310 Racing team in 2002, he went straight from karting to the all-oval Indy Racing League...with no oval experience and no experience racing cars. It's the story of a remarkable man, from a remarkable family, who had a single season 18 long years ago to demonstrate his potential while facing impossible odds. His experiences as a driver and as an African American in the IndyCar Series. Like many drivers, George Mack started in Go-Karting with his Father in California. With his success, he moved up the ranks until he found himself racing in Europe. With the creation of the Indy Racing League, George Mack secured a ride on the IndyCar Series with an underfunded team and competed in the 2002 season, running the oval only series. George Mack is the highest finishing African American driver in the Indy 500 to date, finishing 17th in 2002. He and Willy T. Ribbs hold they distinction of being the only 2 African Americans to run in the Indianapolis 500. He credits Willy T. Ribbs as being a mentor and a supporter of his racing career and we discuss his thoughts on the Netlix movie - Uppity. I caught up with George Mack on the way home from work in Los Angeles traffic (please pardon the video quality and framing in some portions of the interview). George was born in Hollywood, California and has always called the LA area home. David Dalton, Jr. Dreams that it is him Episode 28 of the 33 Dreams of Indy Podcast In 1985. a brash yet confident driver by the name of Willy T. Ribbs showed up at the Indianapolis Speedway with dreams of making it into the field of 33. It was not meant to be that year, as documented in the new movie available on Netflix - Uppity. Uppity - Available on Netflix Willy T.'s dream would have to wait until 1991 when he became the Jackie Robinson of IndyCar Racing by being the 1st African American to start in the Indy 500. He raced at Indy again in 1993 - finishing 21st. It was 9 years later in 2002 that George Mack follow the path set by Willy T. by making the field of 33 and finishing 17th. In the 18 years that have followed, there has not been an African American as part of the 33. In a dual fold manner - to celebrate Black History Month and also to shine a light on a up and coming driver, I interviewed David Dalton, Jr. David dreams of being the 3rd African American Driver to race in the Indy 500. But he knows he has a long ways to go to get there and is open to doing what he loves to do - Race. So much so that he recently submitted an application to the NASCAR REV - Drive for Diversity Program. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DIxxS8W79w David is not just looking for an advantage or a hand out - rather he is touting his results in his young racing career. In 2018 he participated in the Inaugural Lucas Oil School of Racing Shootout, finishing 5th. This finished earned him a place in races during the 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Series. He shined, making 12 out of the 18 events, with 1 win and 3 Podium Finishes. 2018 Lucas Oil School of Racing Shootout Finalist In this interview, we talk about David racing along with the challenges that he has faced along the way. https://youtu.be/WeQSyeRTTUY If you would like to support David Dalton, Jr. I have included a link to his efforts: https://www.facebook.com/donate/553511681914306/2963182713746025/
