Through the Power Purls podcast, Kara’s mission is to dig deep and ask those burning questions about what turned her guests on to the “two sticks and fiber” in the first place, and what keeps their needles moving! Making the Leap: Do you know your ONE thing? Kara shares how she planned it out and did the math before leaving her full-time job to pursue her dreams. Kara tells about the things she has going on within her dream. Even though we focus on ONE thing, we have commitments to many things. Is multi-tasking a bad thing? Absolutely not! Kara shares how to find the one thing that makes thousands of other things become easier. You, too, can find a way to streamline your dream. Today’s podcast episode is motivated by Aimee’s desire to have all of her listeners hear her guest’s story. Kara Gott Warner, Creative Knitting Magazine Executive Editor, and host of Power Purls Podcast, began her career designing knitting patterns in 2002. Her designs have been published in several magazines, including: Creative Knitting, Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Knitting and Interweave Knits. Kara has a background as a technical illustrator, working with craft book publishers such as Random House, Lark Books, Sterling Publishing and F+W. Kara first joined Annie's Publishing in 2008 as knitting book editor, and then in 2010 signed on as Executive Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine and Annie’s knitting publications. Through Power Purls Podcast, Kara's mission is to dig deep and ask those burning questions about what turned her guests on to the “two sticks and fiber,” in the first place, and what keeps their needles moving! TWEET: If you just focus on one small aspect of your industry, it’s going to be hard ~ Kara Gott Warner The negative power of pigeonholing yourself. When Kara Gott Warner began working full time as editor of Creative Knitting Magazine, she became aware of the ease with which knitters could pigeonhole themselves. To her, it seemed that too many would lump themselves into a certain skill category and feel that they were unable to move from there. Kara felt that the categories needed to be broader, so she created new categories to enable people to more easily move from one to the next without as much fear of stepping out of their comfort zone. Isn’t that a great parable for life? We all too easily think of ourselves in one set way when the reality is that each of us has the ability to grow, mature, and increase in skill so that we are not today what we were tomorrow. Hear more of Kara’s insights on this episode. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. It’s common nowadays for people to talk about the impossibility of overnight success and today’s guest, Kara Gott Warner agrees. Her journey from an unhappy financier to editor of Creative Knitting Magazine was almost a decade long. She attributes the success she’s experienced to constant motion in the same direction. She wasn’t standing still. She was moving toward what she wanted, preparing herself, learning, growing in the skills it would take to become what she wanted to be. In this episode Kara unpacks her thoughts about how that happened in her own journey and gives some advice about the importance of preparing yourself for the future while you’re waiting for the opportunities to come. TWEET: I was on a trajectory I didn’t like and my husband encouraged me to quit ~ Kara Gott Warner When you truly care about something you just can’t quit. Kara Gott Warner had a reintroduction to knitting in her early 20s. It became a place of solace and personal therapy for her at the end of a hard or busy day. She fell in love with knitting and began designing patterns of her own. But it wasn’t long before she realized that she wanted to somehow make her love for knitting into a career. That might sound crazy because knitting doesn’t sound like a very lucrative business niche, and it’s not. But Kara didn’t care about that. Her desire was to always have knitting be near the center of her life and that included  her work. So she set out in that direction and never looked back. Even though hard times came, she didn’t allow herself to become discouraged because she cared about knitting so much.  Aimee does a great job of drawing out Kara’s story and the lessons she’s learned on her way to the top, so be sure you listen in to this inspiring episode. Looking back, what things would you change? Most of us have missteps or regrets of one kind or another - both small and more serious. But when Aimee asked  her guest, Kara Gott Warner what she would change if she could start her journey over, Kara said, “Not a thing.” She believes that everything she’s been through has been for her own growth and development and that if any of those things were magically changed, she wouldn’t be the person she is today. Now THAT is a refreshing perspective, and Kara’s full of them. You can hear the entire conversation Aimee had with Kara, Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: I’m blown away by the broad scope of people I’m touching ~ Kara Gott Warner OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:03] Aimee’s introduction of her friend, Kara Gott Warner. Sponsored by Quince & Co and my Longaberger home business.  Leave a comment on the show blog to be entered into a drawing for your choice of Sabrina Mitts, Abbey Road Socks, or Barcelona Scarflet and the Tern yarn to make your project.  Nature:  Pileated Woodpecker sighting and info about pileated woodpeckers.  Foxes and Fox Sparrows. Needle Notes: 9 inches left on my Norwegian Sweater.  I identify a malady.  It's Shawl Withdrawal Syndrome.  I have not knitted a shawl since Feb 1.  This is shocking!  I need to stop the madness and get started on one ASAP.  In the Fix It Challenge I knit about 4 rows on a ribbed stocking hat that was too small to give to my dad as a gift.  I share how I sew in the tails on ribbing to make this cap reversible. See show notes for photo tutorial. Blethering Room:  More comfort knitting from 3 Pipeliners.  Estelle by Melissa LaBarre is a possibility for a KAL.  Review Notes:  Knitting Traditions by Interweave Knits.  Highly Recommended.  Get it before May 15, 2011. Music:  Irish Set by Celtic Cross Pipes and Drums.  Recorded at rehearsal on March 24, 2011.

As You Like It is a play written by William Shakespeare. There are many related production notes, commentaries, translations, summaries, and glossaries on the Web. I went on a trip with Southwest Airlines. They pulled me off my flight just before takeoff for fear of the H1N1 flu (or "swine flu") and said I could only get back on a flight home if I was tested at a hospital first. This embarrassed me, cost me a lot of money, and didn't actually accomplish anything, as the test was only 70% accurate. Charlie Rose aired an episode about H1N1 and what we know about it so far. Unfortunately, the video itself isn't available yet. Here is a Q&A session with one of the participants in the Charlie Rose panel. Notice that, in spite of the "national emergency" status given by President Obama (whom I voted for, remember), the actual data we have on H1N1 show it to be slightly different but not necessarily more dangerous than other types of flus. I sang the intro to the fashion segment to the tune of "Moon River," written by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini for Breakfast at Tiffany's. I like this movie. Except the Mickey Rooney bits. I've been following the fashion shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris for the past few years, via podcasts by MODTV and Style.com. Some of the designer collections I mentioned in this podcast are: * Anna Sui, New York, Fall 2009 * Erdem, London, Fall 2009 * Christopher Kane, London, Fall 2009 * Peter Pilotto, London, Fall 2009 * Gucci, Milan, Fall 2009 * Giorgio Armani, Milan, Fall 2009 I also talked about Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting magazines. All the music was provided by Mevio.com. "Winter Wind" was composed and performed by Jon Schmidt. Seamonkey adapted "Swine Flu" from "Footloose" (popularized by Kenny Loggins).

Poem "Der Vampir" (The Vampire) by Heinrich August Ossenfelder, 1748. (Google "der vampir" ossenfelder) Harlequin novels are romances aimed at women. The movie, Twilight, is based on the Twilight book series by Stephenie Meyer. Creepy Cute Crochet is by Christen Haden, from Quirk Books in Philadelphia. My first set of interchangeable circular needles were Denise Interchangeables. They lasted more than twenty years. I got my metal-tip set of interchangeable circular needles from KnitPicks. My husband bought me my whale balance toy for Christmas. It is made by Authentic Models. Jo Sharp designed the Silkroad Cardigan. It was first published in the Fall 2004 issue of Interweave Knits. There are errata for this pattern. The cable pattern I'm using is on the bottom center of the cover of Beautiful Knitting Patterns, by Gisela Klopper. It's also on page 49. I was probably too hard on Red Heart yarn. They have a lot of different yarns, and not all of them stand up by themselves. I Love This Yarn acrylic worsted weight yarn (search for it on Ravelry to get the specs) is sold by Hobby Lobby. Look up "liminal space" in From Ritual to Theatre: The Human Seriousness of Play, by Victor Turner. No rats were harmed in the recording of this podcast. They screech more when they are fighting amongst themselves than they did in the bathtub. And yes, the little squeaks you heard in the background of this episode were the rats, fighting. Music used in this podcast was licensed according to a Creative Commons license that indicates that the performers really, really want you to download and share their music. Check them out! "Vampire Theme," by icephixia. "Oh, You Make Me Cry" from the album, La vita è sofferenza (La morte è l'unica certezza), by Stephen Cartier. "Shapeshifter," from the album, Shapeshifter, by The Ease Down.

This week's episode has been sponsored by: This week: Abstract FiberFact #1: Who wants their knitting happiness interrupted by a knot in their yarn? We at Abstract Fiber believe our skeins should not have knots! We maintain a zero knot policy when winding our yarns. If the yarn breaks, we set it aside and start another skein. Our Macho Socks and triple skeins give you larger skeins, and still, no knots. At Abstract Fiber we provide you with the highest quality product, and that means no knots! Remember, at AbstractFiber.com we offer free shipping in the US and Canada for all orders over $100. This week: Autumn is in the air. Here at Purlescence Yarns we're turning our thoughts toward holiday projects. We'll be knitting, spinning, and weaving most of our gifts this year. Now's the time to make that list of gifts for your friends and family. Let us help you with tons of ideas for great gifts. We'll be tweeting about them in the coming weeks. Follow us @Purlescence on Twitter! Events: (00:31) - New York Sheep and Wool Festival (Rhinebeck): Oct 17-18. Meetup TBD. On the Needles: (2:41) Jasmin's Tangled Yoke Cardigan is nearly finished. Gigi is working on her Origami Wrap Pullover. Jasmin talks about buttonbands, and picking up three stitches for every four rows when picking up stitches for a buttonband. Gigi is working on a few pairs of vanilla socks, out of Regia Galaxy. Jasmin is knitting a pair of socks for Andrew out of her Crown Mountain "Albatross" handspun. Gigi is working on a crocheted edging for pillowcases. Jasmin talks about the yarn swap at Purlescence, where she came away with a skein of sock yarn, and a sweater's worth of Brown Sheep NatureSpun (in Cranberry Fog). Contest: (25:44) Post your contest ideas in our Ravelry group! Mother Knows Best: (28:08) We discuss "breakout projects". Jasmin's favorite "learning" baby sweater is the cardigan from Debbie Bliss's "Quick Baby Knits". We also recommend the Print of the Wave Stole (errata for the edging here), the Twist Cardigan, and the Lady Eleanor Stole. When Knitting Attacks: (35:54) Gigi has been foiled by not being able to find the issue of Interweave Knits with the Frost Flowers Stole (by Charlene Schurch). Jasmin's enthusiasm causes trouble, again, with her Tangled Yoke Cardigan. Gigi's Swallowtail Shawl hits some snags. We talk about lifelines. Gigi's Scandanavian Socks continue to be troubled. Straw into Gold: (51:15) Jasmin spins a little more of Duchess (to become the Carnaby Street Pullover). She has also been spinning some of the Crown Mountain Superwash in "Hey Jude". Jasmin experiments with dyeing pindrafted roving in the coil.

This week's episode has been sponsored by: New this week: rosy pinks, deep, dark reds, hot tropicals, deep green, a brown, and a foggy grey. For spinners: a blend of yak and merino, and soon will have pure silk for summer spinning. As always, Abstract Fiber offers free domestic shipping on orders over $100. This week: A beautiful selection of hand-dyed silk lace yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts and Claudia Hand Painted Yarns, as well as wool, alpaca, and cashmere lace blends for summer lace shawl knitting. All new subscribers receive a free gift from Eucalan as our way of saying thanks for supporting Verena Knitting! Use subscription code: KNITMG Congrats on graduating, Tika!!! On the Needles: (1:33) Gigi has finished knitting Carli. She'll be photographing them with the pins from Romi. Summer means lace knitting for Jasmin. She is working on her Wool Peddler's Shawl. Jasmin admits objecting to the seemingly exponential growth of triangular shawls. Gigi's Marta is nearing completion, as are her Par 5 socks in Malabrigo Sock. Jasmin is still working on her Aran Pocket Shawl. Gigi is working on the Riverbed sock out of the Abstract Fiber SuperSock in "Macbeth". Jasmin is working on a sock out of the Abstract Fiber Supersock in "Newport". Gigi is going on a blocking binge! She's blocking her Chic Pulli in Cascade Venezia. Jasmin is planning on pulling two UFO triangular lace shawls (the Icarus and the Adamas Shawls). Jasmin and Gigi agree that the Waterfall shell (from the Spring issue of Verena Knitting) would be fantastic for the Tess Microfiber Ribbon. Jasmin also thinks the Aleita Shell (from Interweave Knits, Spring 2008) would be a great use of the Tess Ribbon. Jasmin is also excited about the Sandrine sweater. Bring it On! (18:12) Jasmin is on an organization binge. She is using the comforter bags (seen on the sockpr0n blog) to separate fleeces, and yarns by dyer. Mother Knows Best: (23:05) Gigi talks about blocking using cardboard cutting boards in conjunction with Knitter's Blocks. Events: (27:17) - Saturday, June 6th: Spinning at the Retzlaff winery. There's a $5 entry fee, and a potluck lunch. - Saturday, June 13th: WorldWide Knit in Public day. Jasmin will be at Santana Row (between Cohiba and Sunglasses on the Row), Gigi will be in Los Angeles. - August 6-9: Sock Summit in Portland, Oregon. We will be staying at the Mariott Courtyard in Portland. We'll be doing a meet-and-greet with goodie bags! Straw into Gold: (31:03) The last of Jasmin's fleeces from Booneville arrived, processed and beautiful from Shari at Morro Fleece Works. Jasmin talks about Duchess, a 1/2 blood, blue/gray fleece from Jean Near. Jasmin plied the cashmere/silk from Abstract Fiber this week, and discovered some issues with her WooLee Winder. Jasmin needs help- she needs the directions on how to disassemble/reassemble hers.
