Deep in the wilds of Karelia, Russia there is an unassuming Mountain with a mysterious secret. It is called – Mount Vottovaara, aka ‘Russia's Stonehenge' where mysterious stone stacks frame the solstice sun. Cameras fail, compasses spin, the air feels heavy and time seems to warp. Sámi lore calls it a sacred portal to “other worlds.” Modern hikers report lost hours, eerie orbs, and phantom figures on horseback. Plus we have listener stories that include time loss during a close call with fae in the forest, a spontaneously combusting violin, and a paranormal cold war era political drama over ‘The Pumpkin Papers'. PS.

KATJA IVAR chats to Paul Burke about her new novel Trouble, the third Hella Mauzer mystery, growing up in Russia and the US, Finland and women in the police force.TROUBLE: Helsinki, June 1953, at the heart of the Cold War. Hella, now a reluctant private investigator, has been asked by her former boss at the Helsinki murder squad to do a background check on a member of the Finnish secret services. Not the type of job Hella was hoping for, but she accepts it on the condition that she is given access to the files concerning the roadside death of her father in 1942, at a time when Finland joined forces with Nazi Germany in its attack against the Soviet Union. German troops were sent to Finland, the Gestapo arrived in Helsinki and German influence on local government was strong, including demands for the deportation of local Jews. Colonel Mauzer, his wife and other family members were killed by a truck in a hit and run incident. An accident, file closed, they said. But not for Hella, whose unwelcome investigation leads to some who would prefer to see her stopped dead in her tracks.Katja Ivar grew up in Russia and the U.S. She travelled the world extensively, from Almaty to Ushuaia, from Karelia to Kyushu, before finally settling in Paris where she lives with her husband and three children. She received a B.A. in Linguistics and a master's degree in Contemporary History from Sorbonne University. 'Evil Things' was her debut novel and the first in the Hella Mauzer series. Celebrating the release of their incredibly impressive record ASPHYXIA, we got the chance to hear all about it from Zephios of Karelia's Discord! Currently based all the way in Aberdeen, Scotland, Karelia's Discord are consistently aiming to think outside the box when creating their niche sound. In our eyes and ears, they've certainly surpassed that goal on their all new album ASPHYXIA, a piece of art that feels more like an audible journey rather than a standard record. We spoke with front man Zephios who kindly took us on an adventure through the creative process, nailing down exactly what genre and style this embodies, and so much more. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wewriteaboutmusic/support

We continue our Pride month celebration with our returning guest, Lee (!!), for Satisfaction Guaranteed by Karelia Stetz-Waters—a grumpy/sunshine-esque, opposites attract, F/F romance. Cade is a buttoned up, by the books, shy and serious art gallery owner and Selena is a free spirit with an open mind and a love of sex and sensuality. When the two are paired to save a dying sex toy store, sparks fly, but will they burn hot enough for a long-term relationship? Also discussed: a singlet Pride onesie, slippery middles, and heartthrobs of 2004. If you like what you hear and want more – first, BLESS YOU – and second, please consider donating to our Patreon. For the first time ever, Jake's Take is welcoming some of its favorite acts from Canada's Got Talent (CGT). Singer Karelia Costales is the latest performer to visit The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Reality TV superfans might recognize Karelia from her time on the Spanish version of The Voice – La Voz US. In 2020, She performed “Que Suenen” that caught the attention of all four coaches – Luis Fonsi, Carlos Vives, Alejandra Guzmán, and Wisin. Eventually, she decided to enlist with Team Wisin. Unfortunately, she fell in the Battles. Two years later, the London, Ontario resident auditioned for Canada's Got Talent (CGT)'s sophomore season, where she sang Jennifer Holliday and Jennifer Hudson's legendary Dreamgirls anthem: “One Night Only.” Her performance received a standing ovation from judges Lilly Singh and Trish Stratus. In the special CGT edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Karelia Costales reflected on her audition and revealed what would winning the show mean to her.
In the first episode of Bridging the Carbon Gap, we talk to Finnish climate activist Aarne Granlund about personal choices he has made to cut down his individual carbon emissions, from dramatic changes like moving from Helsinki to North Karelia, a region in which there is more concrete action addressing climate change, to smaller changes like being conscious about unnecessary driving. We discuss why Mr. Granlund made these choices, even though they will have little effect on total emissions: he has been able to talk about his experience and encourage others to make the lifestyle changes that they are able to. We also discuss the development of a lifestyle test Mr. Granlund helped to develop, which asks test takers about living, transport, food, and purchases, calculates approximate carbon footprints, and gives tips to reduce emissions based on test results. Thank you for listening to Bridging the Carbon Gap!
Today, we're doing a follow up episode with one of the front line counsellors of SAiF (Stop Abuse in Families) Society, Karelia Gamache. She works with youth and adult clients who are processing and healing from trauma caused by abuse, separation/divorce, and other challenges families today have to navigate.

Ron Nyren's The Book of Lost Light—winner of Black Lawrence Press's 2019 Big Moose Prize and finalist in the 2020 David J. Langum, Sr. Prize in American Historical Fiction—tells the story of Joseph Kylander, whose childhood in early 20th-century San Francisco has been shaped by his widowed father's obsessive photographic project and by his headstrong cousin Karelia's fanciful storytelling and impulsive acts. The 1906 earthquake upends their eccentric routines, and they take refuge with a capricious patron and a group of artists looking to find meaning after the disaster. The Book of Lost Light explores family loyalty and betrayal, Finnish folklore, the nature of time and theater, and what it takes to recover from calamity and build a new life from the ashes. Ron Nyren's fiction has appeared in The Paris Review, The Missouri Review, The North American Review, Glimmer Train Stories, Mississippi Review, and 100 Word Story, among others, and his stories have been shortlisted for the O. Henry Awards and the Pushcart Prize. His writing about architecture, urban design, and sustainability has appeared in Urban Land, Interior Design, Metropolis, and elsewhere. He is the coauthor, with his spouse and writing partner Sarah Stone, of Deepening Fiction: A Practical Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Writers and a former editor of Furious Fictions: The Magazine of Short-Short Stories. Ron earned his MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan. A former Stegner Fellow, he is an instructor in fiction writing for Stanford Continuing Studies. In his free time, he loves going to the theater, museums, and the San Francisco Bay. I interview authors of beautifully written literary fiction and mysteries, and try to focus on independently published novels, especially by women and others whose voices deserve more attention. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #127! Today's guests are Dina Ikhina and Denis Makhankov who are a family duo of young organists from Russia. Yesterday the organists have performed for the first time in Vilnius St. Johns' Church Organ and presented before the New Year's Eve a concert entitled "Farewell to Old Year", in which the audience enjoyed the works of J. S. Bach, P. Tchaikovsky, A. Chekalin, A. Pärt and other composers. Dina was born in 1986 in Saratov, Denis – 1988 in Ivanovo. Both studied organ music in St. Petersburg under a well-known Russian Federation artist prof. D. Zaretski, later harpsichord under prof. I. Rosanov and have acquired postgraduate degrees in Music. Since 2014 these organists perform together. The duo concert program consists invariable of pieces by modern composers. Currently, the organists perform in Russia and throughout Europe, also teach at the St. Petersburg N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire and at city music schools, organize organ music festivals in Russia and Estonia. At the same time, the organists work in the famous Arts Palace in Kondopoga, Karelia, and also organize the annual “Grande Orgue” International Organ Music Festival. Dina and Denis are among the founders and organizers of the project "Organ Concerts in Pechory". The project collects funds for the restoration of the historic Pechory (Pskov Region) organ of the St. Peter church. They were awarded the State Prize "National Recognition 2015" in the Initiative category (Pskov, 2016) and the Pskov Administration Award for this project. In this conversation, Dina and Denis talk about their organ playing adventures and give such wonderful advice as not being afraid to try new things, trusting your ears, life-long study, consulting with experts and trying out many instruments with different acoustics. We had this conversation at the restaurant so the environment is a bit noisy but since my guests talk rather slowly in English, I hope you will be able to follow it. Listen to the conversation And don't forget to help spread the word about the SOP Podcast by sharing it with your organist friends.
Recorded in 2016, I speak to Marjo Matikainen-Källström, Satu Hallonberg and Markku Pulli about Karjalaisetkesäjuhlat; the commemoration of the evacuation of 430,000 people from Karelia after World War 2 and a celebration of continuing Karelian culture. I then speak to Satu (nowadays, Mrs Wiltshear) who shares some of her family's memories as evacuees from Karjala. Show notes & links
Ildar Dadin is a political prisoner in Russia. He has the unwelcome distinction of being the first person imprisoned under an onerous new law: a law that effectively bans protests of the government without permission from that same government. Dadin has been tortured. He feared that he would be killed. Just recently, he was transferred from one prison, in Karelia, near Finland, to another... Source
