As a kid growing up in Nipissing, Ont., Christian Allaire dreamed of being part of the glamorous world that he saw in his mother's Vogue magazines. Now, he's the senior fashion and style writer at Vogue in New York. Christian writes about that incredible journey in his new memoir, “From the Rez to the Runway.” He sits down with Tom Power to talk about how powwow regalia and jingle dance dresses were his first exposure to the fashion world, the racism he encountered throughout his time in the fashion industry, and how he embraced his Ojibwe identity as his cool factor. If you like this conversation, you'll probably also enjoy Tom's interview with fashion designer Anna Sui.

One day, you're just a girl moving to New York from Canada with a visa and a dream, and a few years down the line, you're an in-demand industry success story. Such is the case with this week's guest. Alyssa sits down with Ariella Starkman, founder and executive producer of the full-service creative production company Starkman & Associates, as well as the managing director at HommeGirls, to learn all about the wild world of production. You've likely seen one (or several) of Ariella's events come across your Instagram or TikTok feed, as she and her team have built out experiences for some of the coolest, most sought-after brands on the scene, including Anna Sui, Dazed, Kim Shui, Luar, Nike, Sky High Farm, Stussy, Telfar, Vans, and Warby Parker. At a time when everyone is getting into the IRL activations game, Ariella operates under the philosophy that chic events are a dime a dozen, and making people feel like their time has been considered when they show up for something is crucial. Tune in to hear how Bravo's “Gallery Girls” inspired Ariella to start a career in the art world and led her to produce her first event in her early 20s, a warehouse art show in Toronto; how time is our most valuable resource and making experiences worthwhile through the details is her company's guiding principle; navigating the attention economy as a creative and a business owner; the importance of never phoning anything in; the dangers of “compare and despair;” why being the first person to do something is a double-edged sword, but while people may copy you, the sauce is not replicable; how to create a sense of curiosity by finding new, unexpected event spaces; why building a tight-knit professional community is key to finding meaning in your work; why at the end of the day, it's just not that serious, and much more. This episode was recorded in the podcast studio at The SQ @ 205 Hudson. This weeks episode is definitely a special one!!! We have the one and only Joseph Abboud. Joseph is an American menswear fashion designer and author. I would put him on the top of the list right next to Ralph Lauren, Versaci, Tommy Hilfiger and any other mens fashion designer.   The National Arts Club has been awarding its Medal of Honor to some of fashion's biggest names since 2003, starting with Geoffrey Beene and including Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson, Norma Kamali and Anna Sui. But it has never honored a menswear designer. That will change Friday night when Joseph Abboud is singled out for his illustrious career in the men's industry.   Abboud joined Ralph Lauren in 1981, eventually becoming associate director of menswear design. He launched his own label in spring 1987. In 1988, JA Apparel was created as a joint venture between Abboud and GFT (Gruppo Finanziario Tessile) USA.   The designer, who graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Boston and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, got his start in fashion at the Louis Boston men's store in his hometown before working for Ralph Lauren as a menswear designer. He launched his namesake brand in 1987.

The Longevity of Tim Blanks: A Beacon in Fashion

What's Contemporary Now?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2023 37:18

Fashion journalist, writer, and broadcaster Tim Blanks has had a front-row seat to many defining, pivotal moments in the fashion industry since 1985. Throughout his prolific career, he has witnessed countless transformational trends, with his byline appearing in international magazines and newspapers, including Vogue, GQ, Financial Times, Fantastic Man, and Interview. Previously, host of the globally syndicated television show Fashion File for a 20-year stint, he was as well editor-at-large at style.com. Today, he is editor-at-large of Business of Fashion and a celebrated author and contributor to various monographs and volumes on fashion royalty, such as Anna Sui, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, and Michael Roberts. In this lively conversation with Christopher Michael, he contextualizes trends related to everything from branding and sustainability to creative talents and human needs, which attract people to the art of fashion. Tim's insights reflect a unique perspective on the industry's evolution and a deep, intuitive understanding of the vulnerabilities and desire for validation that drive even the most successful industry icons. Although Tim celebrates the fault lines he sees redefining today's fashion landscape with new inclusive language and geographic diversity, he also spotlights global issues such as social and environmental justice, prompting a reckoning of sorts within the fashion industry—and the world at large. Ultimately, it's all about keeping creatives relevant in an era of turbocharged change and adaptation. Episode Highlights: Starting out: Starting university at age 15 helped him evade bullying and launched his experience of making “all those mistakes that change your life.” Connecting with fashion: Tim's limited exposure to fashion while coming into adulthood in New Zealand when he realized images had the power to shock or amaze. First rung: A detour into filmmaking in Canada eventually morphed into freelance writing and, ultimately, a full-time gig at a fashion magazine and a high-visibility role hosting the global TV show Fashion File. Staying fresh: Keeping something of an outsider's perspective has helped blunt any cynicism about the fashion industry. Inside-outsider: The curiosity—and an eye inspired by filmmaking—has defined Tim's unique approach to fashion's personalities and untold stories. Reflecting and projecting: Fashion has a dual role as a mirror of culture and a harbinger of social trends on the horizon. Community of misfits: Tim believes fashion has historically drawn outsiders, agitators, and visionaries into a tribe bound by creative energy. A circus. A roving family! Human longing: The “hole in our soul” Tim believes we are constantly trying to fill or offset with validation from our peers—an impulse at odds with how social media actually makes us feel. Stand-out moments: Witnessing an interview in which LouLou de la Falaise was the translator for a reluctant Yves St. Laurent; 90s runway shows that were cultural high points, including spectacular shows featuring Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Christian Lacroix; and getting the opportunity to talk to Helmut Lang for the first time. Assessing AI: Tim believes that ChatGPT and other machine learning could create informational bridges and—with good intent—positive, beneficial results. At odds: The challenge to reconcile environmentally wasteful “gigantism” and corporate sustainability in the billion-dollar corporate branding and production world. What's contemporary now? Simmering rage, confusion, chaos, fear, an urge to fight, and a puzzlingly benign (rather than punk) attitude in fashion in contrast to the climate crisis, political unrest, and pandemic fallout. What should be contemporary now? A revolutionary spirit to fuel change, even at great lengths. It's time for idealism coupled with pragmatism, expressing itself in action—with fashion playing a part.

Batsheva Hay on her 'vision board' goal of becoming this generation's Laura Ashley

Batsheva Hay has found success in the fashion industry by simply making what she likes. In 2016, she launched the dress brand Batsheva, which has seen accelerated growth since the start of the pandemic. “I didn't set out to get into fashion at all,” Hay said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. “I was actually a lawyer … and quit my job. And then I got excited to get dressed again in the way that I wanted, which included wearing lots of vintage clothing. I kept on going back to this thrifted Laura Ashley dress that I was just wearing to shreds… I found a pattern maker to remake it, but by that point, I'd changed [the concept] so much that it became a whole other Frankenstein creation. And that was the start, in my head, of wanting to make more.” And thus, Batsheva was born. Luckily for Hay, her original concept proved to be popular during the pandemic. “At first, [everyone] was all about wearing sweatpants, sweatpants, sweatpants,” she said. “But then I started this idea of the house dress, or a printed dress that's really cozy for home. And that's become a huge chunk of my business.” Batsheva hit a lot of radars when Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris's stepdaughter, wore the brand to the 2021 inauguration. According to Hay, the resulting brand awareness worked wonders to drive sales: “I didn't know that it would be so huge. I got a big sales boost from it that I was not really prepared for.” Since, Batsheva has collaborated with brands including Anna Sui and expanded to new categories including furniture. Next, though she's never taken in outside investment, Hay is considering fundraising as she works toward becoming this generation's Laura Ashley. “That's what I'm hoping for,” she said of the goal. “That's on my vision board.”

Approaching four decades of working together, fashion designer Anna Sui and R+Co co-founder Garren often set the tone for where hair and fashion are going. Having met in the '80s through photographer Steven Meisel on a shoot for Italian Vogue, the two creatives had a mind-meld that couldn't be broken. At the time, Sui worked as a wardrobe stylist, but her aesthetic was clear: “Anna was really into pattern on pattern on pattern on pattern, and I was just watching her, how she was absorbing everything,” says Garren. “And, then there was a moment when Steven said to her, ‘You need to start designing.'” Naturally, Garren became part of the team to perfect Sui's first fashion show, which starred all of the supermodels of the time—think: Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. And the duo still collaborates today, the latest project being Sui's exclusive ocelot-print robe for R+Co BLEU. Here, the two chat about the robe's history as well as the thought that went into creating it.

In My Chair

We are all familiar with the one-name legends, from Cher to Madonna,  Bjork, Prince, Iman, Sade...In fashion and hairstyling, there is THE one-name legend  Garren.Known for his daring, rule-breaking cuts for some of hollywoods biggest icons and other celebrities, he has a career spanning over 5 decades.Garren has worked at the top level of fashion with EVERYONE.His list of photographers include  Bill King, Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Klein, Mert and Marcus and of course Steven Meisel, whom he worked with exclusively for about 20 years.Garren has had many celebrity noteworthy moments, cutting off Farrah Fawcett’s angel wings and then cutting her hair short, cultivating Madonna’s look for the famous Sex book, creating that short pixie cut for Victoria Beckham, and turning Haley Bennett into a style icon with her bob hair cut.  Garren is as comfortable with cutting sheers (and not afraid to use them) as he is with styling tools, wigs and studio lights. He was a part of the supermodel era along with Steven Meisel, and did transformative haircuts and color changes for Linda, Christy, Naomi and Amber, at a great time when models were able to change their looks. The Supermodels were the Stars and Garren was their secret weapon.Other celebrities include Audrey Hepburn, Barbara Streisand, Oprah, Giselle, Gigi and Lady Gaga. Garren is the creator of Karlie Kloss’ dramatic chop and Kendall’s transformative bob.He has worked backstage at fashion shows, from Capucci to Anna Sui and Valentino. He’s worked on iconic ad campaigns for Dolce Gabanna, Versace, and Tom Ford.In addition to his editorial, advertising, fashion shows career, he is also behind the wildly success haircare brand R+ Co and now sustainable haute luxury collection R +Co BLEU.Garren, welcome to my chair.

The Mudd Club with Richard Boch in conversation with David Eastaugh The club featured a bar, gender-neutral bathrooms and a rotating gallery curated by Keith Haring on the fourth floor.[2] Live performances included new wave, experimental music, literary icons Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, and catwalk exhibitions for emerging fashion designers Anna Sui and Jasper Conran. From the start it functioned as an "amazing antidote to the uptown glitz of Studio 54in the '70s". As it became more frequented by downtown celebrities, a door policy was established and it acquired a chic, often elitist reputation. The Mudd Club was frequented by many of Manhattan's up-and-coming cult celebrities. Other individuals associated with the venue included musicians Lou Reed, Johnny Thunders, David Byrne, Debbie Harry, Arto Lindsay, John Lurie, Nicowith Jim Tisdall, Lydia Lunch, X, the Cramps, the B-52's, the Bongos and  artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and his then-girlfriend Madonna; performers Klaus Nomi and John Sex; designers Betsey Johnson, Maripol and Marisol; and underground filmmakers Amos Poe; Vincent Gallo, Kathy Acker, and Glenn O'Brien.

In the small naval town of Annapolis, Maryland, today's guests began designing clothing at the young age of 7. In his teenage years, he quickly realized that this intense love for fashion and design could only be nurtured by moving away from home. At seventeen, he did just that and moved to New York City to study at FIT, where he earned his BFA in fashion design. Over the next seven years, this designer would refine his skills while working for the likes of Anna Sui, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ralph Lauren where he honed his eye for sartorial craftsmanship, explored his interest in the history of American sportswear, and continued to cultivate his own distinct aesthetic. In 2009, he launched his independent neckwear line, David Hart & Co. and over the following years he debuted his first full ready-to-wear collection in 2013 under the label DAVID HART. He prides himself on creating confident yet approachable clothing for the modern gentleman.  With every collection, Hart consistently lends a modern eye with a nostalgic twist.  Each piece is infused with history and classic details that come to life in a very fresh way. His designs have earned him countless fashion awards and he was even named one of the Best Menswear Designers in America by GQ Magazine in 2015. My guest today is David Hart, Owner & Artistic Director of his self-entitled menswear label.  We caught up this week to chat about what it was like growing up in the tiny town of Annapolis, the importance of finding a balance between art and business, and how hard work leads to key moments that help grow your brand!

The American designer speaks to BoF’s Editor-at-Large Tim Blanks about how fashion mirrors politics. LONDON, United Kingdom — The world has changed immeasurably since designer Anna Sui’s last fashion show took place in New York in February. Her next collection is likely to reflect this transformation. “Fashion is a mirror of the times — you can define an era by the clothes,” Sui told BoF Editor-at-Large Tim Blanks. “What people are wearing mimics the politics of the times.”Over the last few months, the world has grappled with a pandemic, a steep economic downturn and, more recently, widespread anti-racist protests. In this week’s special edition of the BoF podcast, Sui makes predictions on how these global events might impact the future of her industry.   People have spent much of the lockdowns at home in sweats and a T-shirt. Sui believes that people might go polar opposite once social distancing restrictions are relaxed. “Suddenly [people] are going to want to be seen,” Sui said, adding that eating at restaurants and drinking at bars will once become occasions for self-expression. Handicrafts may see a resurgence as “people are now taking the time to relearn those skills,” Sui said. Tie dying, crocheting and knitting might well become popular creative outlets for the many people investing time in new hobbies — and this shift could be reflected in upcoming collections. Sui hopes the pace of the industry will slow down and allow space for self-reflection. Looking back to the 1990s, “[There] wasn’t this frantic need to be working all the time, I remember enjoying the holidays,” Sui said. “Let’s hope that this gets back under control and that we learn how to balance out our lifestyles again.” Sweatsuits and Yoga Pants Are Selling Like Crazy. Fashion designer Anna Sui thinks the industry is overdue for a reckoning, in terms of diversity. "This is the moment for black designers and companies to step up. The curtains are open. Go for it," Sui said on the Glossy Podcast. Though not equivalent to the black experience, Sui's childhood was filled with dreams to become a designer despite not seeing anyone who looked like her at the forefront of the biggest labels, she said. "I came from the suburbs of Detroit. At the time when I started designing, there really weren't other Chinese designers." Now Sui's main collection is sold in 50 Anna Sui boutiques across eight countries and over 300 retailers globally. "In China, I'm more known for my lipstick and my perfume than I am for my fashion," Sui said, noting the contrast to the U.S. market. And in the states, she said, a fashion shakeup is looming. "We've drifted into this minimal look before -- this almost uniform look. Business usually gets bad during that period. Then, all of a sudden, something more embellished will look good," Sui said. "It's like a pendulum. Whatever is in right now, the opposite is what's going to make people excited and think, 'That's the next big thing.'"

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned? Well that's because they just heard about these thirteen things from Disney's Pocahontas. So thanks for giving us your time while you gobble these up. Animators working on the film regarded it as being one of the hardest films ever produced by the studio. The complex color schemes, angular shapes, and facial expressions meant that the film was in production for five years. Pocahontas is now frequently cited as being one of the most beautifully, and realistically, animated characters in the Disney canon, her fluid movements mainly being attributed to rotoscoping. The film's release on June 23, 1995, was also the 400th anniversary of the real Pocahontas' birth. The Disney executives had all the secondary animal characters, such as Meeko and Flit, lose all of their dialogue in order to make the film a bit more serious. The end credits song "If I Never Knew You", was cut after children in test audiences found it boring and the adults found it too depressing. The unfinished sequence was shown in ABC's 1997 airing of the film. For the 10th anniversary DVD release, the animation was completed and the song inserted back into the film, as well as a short reprise in the final scene. "Colors of the Wind" was the first song written for this production, and helped define the tone and direction of the film. Though this song features the word "mountain" in its verses, the real Pocahontas supposedly never saw any mountains in her lifetime. John Candy had provided a large amount of voice work into a character named "Redfeather", a turkey as Pocahontas' sidekick. After Candy's death in 1994, the concept was scrapped. In real-life, Pocahontas would have been more likely to be topless and likely covered in tribal tattoos, even her face. Pocahontas is one of the few cartoon characters to be granted a proper "photo spread" in Harper's Bazaar. For the June 1995 edition, Gianni Versace, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, and Isaac Mizrahi all designed special outfits for her, which were then drawn by Disney animators for the magazine. Upon it's initial release, then-studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg regarded Pocahontas as a more prestigious project than The Lion King, and even believed that it had a chance of earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, following in the steps of Beauty and the Beast. John Pomeroy was the Supervising Animator for John Smith, and watched several Errol Flynn movies, as reference for the movements of the character. Once the look of Smith was finalized, fourteen other animators were drafted in to make him come to life. As all the actors recorded their dialogue separately, they did not meet each other until the premiere. Mel Gibson did not attend the premiere because he was away filming Braveheart. As of 2019, Irene Bedard (who voiced Pocahontas) still has not met him. Shirley "Little Dove" Custalow-McGowan, a descendant of the real Pocahontas, worked on the film as a consultant. When she discovered that there would be a lot of artistic license with history, she left the project. This is the first Disney film to be censored before going to theaters, due to "racial slurs in the song 'Savages'". Some lyrics where changed for the film, as they were viewed as inappropriate (even though authentic to the setting). If you watch the scene in the film, it's obvious the animators had no time to match the mouth movements with the new lyrics. Interestingly, for some unknown reason, the original motion picture soundtrack still features the earlier lyrics. Pocahontas (1995) G | 1h 21min | Animation, Adventure, Drama | 23 June 1995 (USA) An English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief share a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth-century Virginia. Contemporary designer Anna Sui was born and raised in Detroit, and while her fashion studies and career were focused in New York, she regularly returns to her hometown to speak at events and inspire fashion students who dream of following her success track, which includes 50 boutiques in eight countries, and her brand in 300 stores in more than 30 countries. In April, Anna was at College for Creative Studies in Detroit to attend the Fashion Accessories Design Portfolio Day, featuring the collections of graduating seniors, as well as to participate in a lecture with the Fashion Accessories Design chair, Aki Choklat. Prior to the lecture, she held an intimate press conference with a select group of the media, opening herself up to any and all questions from the group. This week on LADY’s After Hours, fashion and cultural historian Laura McLaws Helms meets with fashion designer Anna Sui. Born in Detroit in 1952, from a young age Sui became obsessed with fashion, music and New York. Sui achieved her dream when she moved to NYC to study fashion design at Parsons, but left after two years to work as an assistant designer at a juniors’ sportswear label. In 1980 she started her own company with $300. With the help of best friends Steven Meisel and Paul Cavaco, Sui launched herself into the fashion stratosphere in 1991 with her supermodel-heavy first runway show. In 1992 Sui opened her first store and won the CFDA Perry Ellis award for new talent. Sell-out collections at the major department stores and celebrity endorsements from such megastars as Madonna led to more stores, diffusion lines, perfumes and a makeup collection. Anna speaks openly about her slow road to “overnight success” and the business deals and collaborations that allowed her to expand her empire and to maintain control privately of her company. A fascinating interview for anyone interested in the inspiration, research, hard work and business behind the clothes you wear. A “celebrity photographer who also photographs celebrities”, Russel Wong is one of the most profiled photographers in Singapore and Asia.  He enjoys the acclaim of being the first Singaporean to break into the notoriously difficult Hollywood movie industry, and is also among the elite photographers commissioned to photograph covers for Time magazine. From his beginnings in sports photography covering world record miler Sebastian Coe, Russel went on to carry out coveted photographic work for Nike, capturing luminaries including Carl Lewis, Mary Decker and John McEnroe.  A Fine Arts degree in Photography from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles followed, and it was then that Russel began to establish a name for himself in international fashion photography, working for the world-renown Elite Modeling Agency. His celebrity fashion spreads for the Los Angeles Times opened the door to working with top celebrities like Joan Chen, Isabella Rossellini, Oliver Stone, Paloma Picasso, Michael Jackson, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Glenn Close, David Lynch, Bruce Willis, and Jackie Chan.  In developing a signature style amidst this highly competitive culture of fashion photography, Russel strove to distinguish his work by re-defining and re-styling the images of these glamorous figures with greater depth, texture and imagination.  Supermodels, designers and musicians soon populated his portfolio – Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valetta, Kenzo, Anna Sui, Yo Yo Ma, and Luciano Pavarotti. The establishment of his photographic studio in Singapore in 1989 brought in accounts with Raffles Hotel, Singapore Airlines, Cartier, American Express, Nike, British Airways, Sony, Visa, Compaq, Four Seasons Hotel, Nokia, The Ritz Carlton Hotel, the Development Bank of Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board, Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore Telecoms and Apple.  Meanwhile, the success of his commercial work also began to draw the attention of leading publications, which all sought Russel's work to grace their covers.  These include the debut cover of Vogue Singapore, and international covers for Time, Fortune, Elle, GQ, Marie Claire, New York Times and Los Angeles Times. The allure and acclaim of Russel's work draws from his ability to infuse his commercial accounts with creative elements, combined with a sensitive, thoughtful take on his subjects.  This is clearly in the vein of the photographers he admires and appreciates – Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts.  Such balance and versatility may be seen in Russel's work photographing stories and fashion spreads for movie sets, such as Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth, and publicity shoots for Lee Ang's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Zhang Yimou's Hero and House of Flying Daggers, as well as portraits of Asian movie starts like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fatt, Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi. Russel's latest work in filmmaking has also been an impactful one, having recently attended the prestigious New York University Film Program, and with plans underway for directing his first feature film.  To date, he has directed numerous award-winning commercials, from a Breast Cancer spot that earned him a CLIO award – the advertising industry's Oscar equivalent – to commercials for Discovery Channel featuring Joan Chen, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.  Also referred to as “The Richard Avedon of Asia” by many, he was recently commissioned to photograph a set of portraits for the Prime Minister of Singapore. Today, Russel's photography continues to make its mark both regionally and internationally.  In its millennium issue, a top regional magazine voted Russel as one of the Asians to look out for in the next millennium.  He is the first Singaporean photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (Russel Wong:  1980 – 2005), and also the first and only photographer to be invited for the art residency at the renowned Singapore Tyler Print Institute.  In addition, his art works can be found in public and private collections, with his “Bamboo Forest” print going for a record US$40,000 at a recent Christies auction in Hong Kong. Russel is one of the extraordinary guests featured on The One Way Ticket Show.   In the podcast, Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they'd go if given a one way ticket, no coming back!  Destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. Several of Steven's guests have included:  Legendary Talk Show Host, Dick Cavett;  CNN's Richard Quest & Bill Weir; Journalist-Humorist-Actor Mo Rocca (of CBS Sunday Morning & The Cooking Channel's "My Grandmother's Ravioli" fame); Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.; as well as leading photographers, artists, writers and more.

As You Like It is a play written by William Shakespeare. There are many related production notes, commentaries, translations, summaries, and glossaries on the Web. I went on a trip with Southwest Airlines. They pulled me off my flight just before takeoff for fear of the H1N1 flu (or "swine flu") and said I could only get back on a flight home if I was tested at a hospital first. This embarrassed me, cost me a lot of money, and didn't actually accomplish anything, as the test was only 70% accurate. Charlie Rose aired an episode about H1N1 and what we know about it so far. Unfortunately, the video itself isn't available yet. Here is a Q&A session with one of the participants in the Charlie Rose panel. Notice that, in spite of the "national emergency" status given by President Obama (whom I voted for, remember), the actual data we have on H1N1 show it to be slightly different but not necessarily more dangerous than other types of flus. I sang the intro to the fashion segment to the tune of "Moon River," written by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini for Breakfast at Tiffany's. I like this movie. Except the Mickey Rooney bits. I've been following the fashion shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris for the past few years, via podcasts by MODTV and Style.com. Some of the designer collections I mentioned in this podcast are: * Anna Sui, New York, Fall 2009 * Erdem, London, Fall 2009 * Christopher Kane, London, Fall 2009 * Peter Pilotto, London, Fall 2009 * Gucci, Milan, Fall 2009 * Giorgio Armani, Milan, Fall 2009 I also talked about Interweave Knits and Vogue Knitting magazines. All the music was provided by Mevio.com. "Winter Wind" was composed and performed by Jon Schmidt. Seamonkey adapted "Swine Flu" from "Footloose" (popularized by Kenny Loggins).

13 Things You Didn't Know About Walt Disney's Pocahontas

The Joe and Mike Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 1970

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned? Well that's because they just heard about these thirteen things from Disney's Pocahontas. So thanks for giving us your time while you gobble these up. 13. 12. The film's release on June 23, 1995, was also the 400th anniversary of the real Pocahontas' birth. 11. The Disney executives had all the secondary animal characters, such as Meeko and Flit, lose all of their dialogue in order to make the film a bit more serious. 10. 9. "Colors of the Wind" was the first song written for this production, and helped define the tone and direction of the film. Though this song features the word "mountain" in its verses, the real Pocahontas supposedly never saw any mountains in her lifetime. 8. John Candy had provided a large amount of voice work into a character named "Redfeather", a turkey as Pocahontas' sidekick. After Candy's death in 1994, the concept was scrapped. 7. In real-life, Pocahontas would have been more likely to be topless and likely covered in tribal tattoos, even her face. 6. 5. Upon it's initial release, then-studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg regarded Pocahontas as a more prestigious project than The Lion King, and even believed that it had a chance of earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, following in the steps of Beauty and the Beast. 4. John Pomeroy was the Supervising Animator for John Smith, and watched several Errol Flynn movies, as reference for the movements of the character. Once the look of Smith was finalized, fourteen other animators were drafted in to make him come to life. 3. As all the actors recorded their dialogue separately, they did not meet each other until the premiere. Mel Gibson did not attend the premiere because he was away filming Braveheart. As of 2019, Irene Bedard (who voiced Pocahontas) still has not met him. 2. Shirley "Little Dove" Custalow-McGowan, a descendant of the real Pocahontas, worked on the film as a consultant. When she discovered that there would be a lot of artistic license with history, she left the project. 1.
