I released a song today! Go check it out on Invisible Oranges: https://www.invisibleoranges.com/slumbering-sun-together-forever/ The new single is also live anywhere that you stream music, including spotify, apple, etc. You can also visit our bandcamp to pre-order the album or purchase the single now: https://slumberingsun.bandcamp.com/album/starmonyThis episode is a discussion of my favorite essay by Tolstoy, the contents of which factored heavily into my book (The Ritual Madness of Rock & Roll) as one of my major influences on the topic of aesthetics. Tolstoy poses the problem of art, the reason why art must justify itself. Criticizing the existing conceptions of art's value, he puts forward his own theory as to art as communicative, then attacks what he considers to be the self-absorbed art of the upper class and the counterfeit art that has captured European culture. Eventually, Tolstoy comes to the conclusion that true art is aimed at the Christian vision of the unification of man. This is the conclusion of the second leg of season five.

In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, O.F. Cieri reads an excerpt from her novel ‘Backmask' and discusses the inspiration behind the story and the music that shaped it. Inspired by pop music history and written in the style of ‘60s horror pulp, ‘Backmask' is the fake history of a conspiracy theory surrounding the Satanic agenda to control children's minds. Nicholas Hush, 1960s record producer, has a vision for the future of pop music. After a series of prophetic dreams, he wants to combine occult imagery with upcoming trends to create a new, groundbreaking look. His secretary, Valerie Chill, is tasked with finding consultants and funding while he crafts the perfect album. Quickly their project becomes entangled in other, larger machinations, and two teenage pop acts become responsible for international intrigue, brainwashing, and an occult massacre. Taking inspiration from the lives of Joe Meek, Phil Spector, and Timothy Leary, ‘Backmask' is a speculative look at how hidden messages got into pop music. O.F. Cieri is a self-taught writer based out of NYC. She has been published in ‘Ligeia Magazine' and ‘Misery Tourism'. In 2013 she won first place in BMCC's Poetry Competition. In 2016 she won an Honorable Mention in LaborArts Make Work Visible Competition. Her nonfiction has been carried by ‘Hyperallergic' and the ‘Invisible Oranges'. In February of 2023 she published her second book, ‘Lockdown Laureate', with Castaigne Publishing. Her third book, ‘Backmask', was published by Malarkey in June of 2023.   MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Rock is Lit theme music [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” The Moontrekkers – “Night of the Vampire” Bauhaus – “She's In Parties” The Cramps “The Goo Goo Mack” [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” Rock is Lit theme music   LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 O.F. Cieri's website: https://ofcieri.com/ O.F. Their visceral heavy sound is grounded in an aggressively melodious genre-fusing experience. Since their formation in 2014 they have been featured on Miami New Times as part of the essential metal bands to see when visiting. BLEETH's self released 2015 EP, Re-animator, took them touring up and down the East Coast, ultimately catching the attention of Anti-Language Records (LA), who released the bands first full-length album Geomancer on August 3rd, 2018. Geomancer helped establish BLEETH on a national level, with coverage on Decibel, Revolver, Invisible Oranges, and more. After completing East Coast, Midwest tour and Florida tours., the band returned to the studio to work on their next album. Ryan Haft, an established live sound "go-to" for bands like Torche, Red Fang, Eyehategod, Big Business, OM, and more, recorded and mixed the band's forthcoming release. The new songs mark “a shift in a new direction”—shorter and faster than past records, with particular emphasis on atypical tunings and arrangements. Appropriately titled, Harbinger, delves into internal struggles the band had with faith in self, public institutions, moral authority, and the afterlife. BLEETH has a growing fear that new technology and crisis would bring our society closer towards authoritarianism. The album title Harbinger is a reference to the omens these internal struggles imply for the future of human society. “BLEETH's sound is already massive, full of angst and virtuosity. They provide us with yet another example of the true Miami contemporary metal sound: heavy bass, guitar riffs that balance complex melodies with foggy atmosphere, and drums with a Latin groove. “-Bandcamp Scene Report : “Diving into Miami's Doom and Sludge Sound”  Special thanks to Ben Sharp of Cloudkicker for the ATI Podcast open! Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Bloodbather over Zoom video! Broward County, Florida-based metal band Bloodbather — Kyler Millo [vocals, bass] and Salem Vex [guitar, synths] — released their new EP Silence via Rise Records."'Silence' is about being manipulated for a long time and realizing it, but not really having the power to retaliate at the time, which then pressures you to become stronger to overcome this oppressive figure," Kyler shares about the uncompromisingly brutal track.Bloodbather were recently christened an "Artist You Need To Know" by Revolver, which lauded the band's ability to craft "nasty, gnarly metallic hardcore rendered all the more suffocating by layers of industrial texture" and featured them in a multi-page spread. Formed in 2018, Bloodbather stormed out of the gates with the independent EP Pressure. The release has since amassed 666k Spotify streams — how metal! — as the group built its live reputation by sharing the stage with everyone from Whitechapel to Carnifex to Of Mice & Men, and by appearing at the notable This Is Hardcore festival.Bloodbather enjoyed early praise from the tastemakers at Invisible Oranges, who stated that the band "swings their music like a battle-axe into naysayer faces, living up to their namesake with flying crimson colors." They earned additional acclaim from SVBTERRANEAN, which proclaimed them "one of the newer bands to embrace and reformulate the angst-ridden, chunky metalcore of old, and one of the newer bands to do it right." Bloodbather signed with Rise Records in 2019 and subsequently hit the studio in Tennessee alongside producer Tate Mercer [Better Off, Chamber, Hampton].Armed with a take-no-prisoners approach and an EP that leaves an indelible mark, Bloodbather are on the verge of becoming one of heavy metal's next big things. The band will most certainly appeal to fans of Code Orange, Knocked Loose, and Vein.We want to hear from you! Recently one of Emmet’s best articles, about the material conditions that led to Nu-metal’s popularity, started to make the rounds on Twitter. Around the same time I was doing a deep dive into the discography of Korn, the band that inarguably made nu-metal a trend in the 1990s. The timing felt fortuitous, so I reached out to Emmet and asked him if he wanted to talk about Korn at length for the podcast. If you’ve been tuning in to the last few episodes, you’ll be aware of the ongoing discussion about the Black Flag reunion, be it the Keith Morris fronted Flag or the Greg Ginn Black Flag. A few months ago, I wrote a piece for Invisible Oranges about this very topic and went on record with my point of view. For me, it’s a complicated topic; Black Flag has influenced me on many levels, as a direct music influence or as an example of how to get the job done, so I had strong emotions when I discovered that there was talk of them reforming. Josh Bayer, who many will be familiar with from his appearances on this podcast, as well as his amazing comics, pointed me to an article that Erick Lyle had written for Vice aptly titled “Can I Get in the Van” which chronicled his journey down to Lyle Texas to audition to be Black Flag’s bassist. It gave me another angle to look at this evolving story; a must read for those of you who have been following this story. Josh was friends with Erick, so I reached out to him about possibly getting Erick to be a guest on the podcast. He was game, so we went for it.

Everything Went Black Podcast

It's been a few weeks since the last podcast but I'm back on track. It's been a grind, spending way too much time on stuff that's not compelling, not to mention the war I've been waging against bedbugs.  Fred Pessaro, the newly installed editor-in-chief of Invisible Oranges is back along with Sam Marble, photographer / Jersey Girl / Heavy Metal Enthusiast is also in the house for a spirited discussion of the recent acquisition of Invisible Oranges by Brooklyn Vegan, SXSW recollections, the ongoing saga of the Black Flag reunion and stories about street violence.

This is a the definitive episode of the Fall season! Fred has a history in underground music that is as massive in scope as it is varied in station. Having been published in Vice, worked the Toyota/Scion Rock Fest, presented the absolutely incredible NOLA documentary for NOISEY... phew, lets backpedal. You see, Fred started out booking shows in NYC, bringing his favorite bands to town. he parlayed that into a career in journalism that led him to becoming Senior Editor of Brooklyn Vegan for 6 years.   He'd had a brief stint as Editor In Chief (as well as DJ/Host) for Invisible Oranges. On to Noisey, where he'd also served as Editor in Chief for almost 3 years. On and on to Editor At Large/Director of Marketing at Revolver. He had then struck out on his own, as the Owner and Operator of Jackpot Plus Artist Services... Deep breath... The long lost, terribly missed, and deeply regarded CREEM Magazine came calling, and Boy Howdy, who would say no?! Intro music "Martyrs" by Heart Out. Theme music by Gown. find Creem on IG @creemmag
