Texas-based singer/songwriter Sarah Pierce was musically influenced by her family’s heritage in the cattle business and she sings about the long line of women who get things done on the ranch. Writing and playing classic country from a woman’s viewpoint and from a place firmly rooted in the land, she combines heartfelt story telling with an honest message in the 9 albums spanning her career. Pierce released her newest CD, Barbed Wire, on the Little Bear Records imprint. Produced by Merel Bregante, Barbed Wire was recorded at The Cribworks Digital Audio in Liberty Hill, Texas, and she is launching her support tour this month in Texas. Gina Chavez is a bilingual Latin-folk singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas, who blends the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. Her latest independent release, Up.Rooted, is a collection of bilingual songs traversing cumbia, bossa nova, vintage pop, reggaeton, and folk combined with dynamic vocals and sharp social commentary. The album topped the iTunes and Amazon Latin charts and was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. She is the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize Winner for her song “Siete-D,” a rock-cumbia-rap mix that explores the delights and dangers of El Salvador from the bus she rode as a volunteer there in 2010. She is currently on tour and will be onstage in Los Angeles at the Hotel Café, Oct 10 with Mitre and Irene Diaz. But she stops in at Music FridayLive! this Friday.
I first met Alex Nestor and her music when she played with the Salvador Santana band in Los Angeles. She has her own red hot blues and R&B band and plays with the Tang Gang and solo – just her and a keyboard. A life of trial and triumph has shaped her unique sound filled with messages of love, positivity, and healing while channeling the retro soul artists of the 60’s and 70’s. She has recorded 12 albums, countless jingles, and been in over 25 theatrical productions, as well as working with established musicians such as Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. This is a classic interview recorded in August last year, so don’t call in. I have begun following the career of MITRE, a singer, songwriter and producer from Mexico City now living in Los Angeles. He is building a fan base in English and Spanish in the US with constant gigs and online promotion. His music is a blend of feelings and sounds ranging from tango, pop, Mexican music, rock and street sounds. His first release, "Fugitivo" on iTunes in 2010 in Mexico, Japan, USA, Canada, and the UK exploded with fan clubs around the world. Mitre is now touring to support his most recent album, Deprador, in which he is joined by the soaring voice of Irene Diaz. One of his hallmarks is collaborating with singers like Diaz, and opening his shows with the Catrina – the icon of the Mexican holiday, Dios Los Muertos. He is now playing in southern California, supporting his debut album in Mitre. This interview was conducted in January.
Well I just went on an album buying spree (and you should too!!) because once again, the research paid off. I listened to around 1500 bands. Narrowed that down to 100 or so. And then wrote out an itinerary of about 40 which, I actually got to see. It is so much work but the reward is so worth it. SXSW is really something I live for. To all my friends and family that helped make it such an awesome event, and for understanding when I could only hang out for 10 minutes because I had the next show to run off to, this podcast is my thank you. If you're curious where I was running off to, I have included my ridiculous itinerary below. Within only a short amount of time Irene has gained national acclaim. NPR's Don Gonyea says “Anyone who hears your voice will wonder, ‘Where have you been all this time'.In late 2011 Irene Diaz began a career move making her way into the music scene playing at various venues around the Los Angeles area, from small coffee shops to eventually playing well known singer songwriter venues such as Room 5 and Hollywood's House of Blues. In February of 2012 Irene's song I Love You Madly caught the attention of NPR Alternative Latino's Jasmine Garsd after by chance opening an email from production company Mucho Music based in L.A. which featured a live video performance. Jasmine Garsd featured the song on her program and said “you can't fake the soul… Irene is so believable in her emotion.”In fall of 2012 Irene began the production of her first E.P. titled I Love You Madly. To help fund her project, Irene raised over $10,000 backed by supporters using the website Kickstarter. With the help of these funds, Irene was able to produce and record her E.P., make a music video for Crazy Love, and fund her way to the East Coast for a small tour and to attend the Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York. After attending the conference it was noted by Felix Contreras on NPR's Alternative Latino segment titled “The Latin Alternative Music Conference 2013: Who Rocked, Who Shocked, Who Killed” that both Jasmine and himself were blown away by Irene Diaz's voice after she had done an impromptu performance of Crazy Love outside the Press Room. “This year we are (both) blown away by Irene Diaz… Listen to this voice.”
This Friday I will on my to Ireland to interview bands. So today we will treat you to a classic Music FridayLive! with Irene Diaz and Karen Dezelle. There will be no show April 18. We will play cuts from it, including the stunning single, “Crazy Love” which will haunt your mind and hypnotize your ears in a riptide of emotion. In segment 2, singer-songwriter Karen Dezelle combines honest narratives with soft, soothing vocals, creating vulnerability with wide appeal. Karen has lived all over the world and it shows in her deft blending of beats and melodies. Reuben and the Dark lead off the show at 2:05 pm ET with their new single "Rolling Stone". Reuben and the Dark is the newest project from Calgary's Reuben Bullock and which I cxaught at a club in LA and had to have on the show. Fresh off the release of his second solo album, Bullock has formed a band of some of Alberta's finest musicians, quickly building a reputation as a killer live band. Their soaring four-part vocal harmonies achieve epic heights woven into hammering beats, always leaving crowds hungry for more. At the core of all this are Bullock's songs, which manage to achieve a balance between seemingly disparate elements: the introspective with the anthemic, and the feat of sounding simultaneously ancient and uniquely contemporary. Irene Diaz returns to Music Friday at 2:30 pm ET with her unique, aching blues and ukelele-backed pop rock. She will also talk with us about the Womyn of Color Conference she is a participant in at Cal State Univesity.Born in the heart of Los Angeles, Irene Diaz has emerged as an independent artist with a tremendous sound and a huge future. A singer/songwriter who plays both guitar and piano, accompanied by her very talented collaborator Carolyn Cardoza,Irene is at home in a recording studio, a showcse or a big hall - she maintains the same intimacy with her audience through a very personal voice. Her initial exposure to music came at a young age, at only 15 years old she developed her own writing/playing style that sets her apart now at 25. We are delighted she can take a break to talk with us. Nominate your favorite band to be on Music Friday. Go to our website, navigate to the Your Choice page at http://musicfriday.n….nationbuilder.com/your_choice and tell us who you want to see.
