On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul concludes his conversation with James Conroy-Finn about the meaning of life on a positive, self-empowering note. KEY TAKEAWAYS Getting from where you are now to where you want to be sometimes requires self-reflection & an amount of self-awareness that maybe doesn't come naturally. It can get uncomfortable when we start looking at mental health, depression, bereavement & other life events that can take us off course. Coaching is about helping other people navigate that journey, recognise some things about themselves & plan together to get them to where they want to be. There's something to be said for being content in oneself, not being too beholden to the opinion of others. But there is a balance. If you're a pariah (an arsehole) you're probably not going to do as well in life as if you are kind & decent When talking to people face-to-face & they're talking about their relationship with someone, you can see in their facial expressions things that maybe they aren't articulating. When someone talks about their relationships with 2 different people, they might use certain words to describe 1 person and not for the other. The omission of a word – especially if it aligns with their values – can communicate something about the amount of respect they have for that person or the strength of their relationship. We live by metaphors, it's how we express everything: Life is a journey, move forward, don't spend too much time in the past, look up not down. For some reason we think looking up is celestial, spiritual, aspirational & looking down is solemn, sedentary, depressing. To some degree you see that in people; if someone's got their head down you think they're feeling low. We understand our world through metaphors. You have to be careful using them when coaching, you need to be more clear. BEST MOMENTS ‘Life is a journey we're all on, taking steps towards something. Working out the right place to put your foot requires an understanding of your values'. ‘Jumping in to try & solve someone else's problem isn't always productive or helpful. Sitting back & giving them the opportunity to express their & really hear them is immensely valuable to them'. ‘Find someone you care about & have an interest in & say very little, just listen. There are little things we can do to get them to elaborate & help us understand where they are & where they're trying to get to. Hopefully we can then get them to where they want to be'. ‘Be present & witness what's going on around you'. On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast Paul continues his conversation with James Conroy-Finn about the meaning of life, specifically about being a World Game-Changer & overcoming depression. KEY TAKEAWAYS I don't know that you ever can fully overcome depression. In many ways it's apart of what we are, a part of our brains & the way we exist & relate to the world around us. Being aware of that & knowing where it comes from & ways you can spend more time in a positive place & developing coping mechanisms. In a way, it's a bit like addictions. Learning to cope with it & navigate it is something we all can do. Most people can probably think of times when they were happy or sad. If you spend time exploring these emotions; you can bring them back. You can make yourself cry by thinking of a film you've watched, like Schindler's List. Same with happiness, like when I first took my dog – Charlie – to the park & taught him how to do tricks. We should be pursuing knowledge, clarity of thought & mental models of how you can better relate to & understand the world around you, these are worthwhile pursuits. Once you have that foundation you can spend your time on all sorts of novel areas.  If you can't be critical or distance your ego from your ideas & have people challenge you, if you have no understanding of the natural world or spent time looking at things like chemistry, physics and biology – The language of mathematics has a bad rep, but if you speak that language it becomes very easy to understand certain things, like the relationship between components of a system. There's great value in this as it helps us better communicate & relate to one another. That's where there's beauty to be found. BEST MOMENTS ‘You can choose how you feel & how you respond to the world, but I don't think we can ever choose not to be human.' ‘Having an adversarial relationship with yourself is never going to be productive.' You're not defined by every idea that pops into your head.' ‘When people try to inhibit others it only holds us all back.' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast Paul continues his conversation with James Conroy-Finn about the meaning of life, specifically from a pragmatic point of view. KEY TAKEAWAYS Pragmatists were Americans & were opposed to the more navel gazing philosophers & did things because they were practical & had some intrinsic value to help them get through life. If you're a deep thinker perhaps you gravitate more towards the abstract? There's an unhealthy negativity around deep thinking & intellectualism, but I think if you do it the right way & are thoughtful, that's a good thing. If you're obsessive, you're probably not doing things in moderation. Philosophy gets a bad rep, but every human being is fascinated by the big questions like where did we come from, why are we here, & why are things the way they are? We're a curious species & we should celebrate that. None of us experience reality in any true, objective sense. It's an abstraction, an image our brains create & it only exists because it's allowed us to survive & procreate as well as to identify threats. We don't see the universe for what it really is. We see an arrow of time, moving things forward, but it doesn't seem that the universe cares about that, it's not intrinsic to the universe, it's something we add when we're put into the equation. We shape the world around us & create stories. It's an illusion. BEST MOMENTS ‘We're all experiencing an hallucination, the difference between people that are sane & insane is that we agree on that hallucination.' ‘Our brains have tendencies to prefer certain shapes.' ‘We create meaning, the universe itself doesn't.' On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast Paul talks to James Conroy-Finn to talk about music, labelling & how it all relates to the meaning of life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Labels can be valuable. I've had friends diagnosed with ADHD who has found this useful. Perhaps they don't experience all of the symptoms that other people that have been labelled with ADHD might experience, but it gives them some structure & ideal of where they fit in to the universe & why they may have struggled at school, for example, where they may have been labelled a naughty child. Every human being, regardless of culture, potentially has an ingrained appreciation for the structure of music & the relationship between notes. Some of that comes down to biology & the way our brains work to interpret those signals, as it responds in certain ways to certain frequencies. Layering culture on top makes it more fascinating. Our musical taste doesn't change that much after our formative years. The music we tend to love the most is the stuff that we listened to as teenagers because we've formed a connection to it: Your first kiss, first car, exam results, those major life events are often associated with some piece of music which can take you back to that place. Later in life we have less of a tendency to explore as much and find those songs, which comes back to the brain. BEST MOMENTS ‘Our sense of smell can take us back to a place in our past, & so can music.' ‘The correct state of the brain is the teenage brain, we should be a little bit more willing to take risks, things should be a little bit more exciting & passionate.' ‘You've got to put in the work. If you do put in the work & you invest in yourself you will come out better at the end of it, but it's scary, it's daunting to face that demon directly in the eyes & try to challenge it.' ‘I'm not a huge fan of the term ‘genius', I think often it diminishes the effort that people put into the work that they do.' Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

As the President of the United States prepared to travel to Morocco for a wartime conference, his closest aide and advisor wrote down just why he was going to make the arduous trip. Franklin Roosevelt, wrote Harry Hopkins, “was going to Casablanca ‘because he wanted to make a trip. He was tired of having other people, particularly myself, speak for him around the world. He wanted to see our troops, he was sick of people telling him that it was dangerous to ride in airplanes. He liked the drama of it. But above all, he wanted to make a trip.” What Churchill called the most important Allied conference took place over ten days in January 1943. In a strange combination of resort accommodations, surrounded by barbed wire, anti-aircraft guns, and sandbags, a no-holds barred exchange laid out plans for the next year, and the years to come.  James Conroy describes the antecedents to the conference, the lengthy trip to get there, and what happened in his new book The Devils Will Get No Rest: FDR, Churchill, and the Plan That Won the War. A practicing lawyer until 2020, James Conroy's first book Our One Common Country, was a finalist for the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize; his second, Lincoln's White House, shared the Lincoln Prize.

Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with James Conroy, who has been a trial lawyer in Boston for over 30 years, having first pursued a public affairs career in Washington, D.C. as a House and Senate press secretary, speechwriter, and chief of staff. In his first book, Our One Common Country: Abraham Lincoln and the Hampton Roads Peace Conference of 1865, Conroy explores the most critical meeting of the Civil War. He describes in great detail what happened when leaders from both sides came together in the only presidential peace mission in America’s wartime history to try and end the hostilities. Ultimately failing to come to an agreement, the War would drag on for two more months. Conroy argues that the failure of the Hampton Roads Conference shaped the course of American history and the future of America’s wars to come.
