Tip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacBack in 1996, I got a call on a Saturday night from a drummer friend asking me to go on a 30-day run of dates in Wyoming and New Mexico. And by the way, we leave Monday. We were playing clubs 6-nights a week, 5 hours a night, with Sundays off to travel to the next show. I experienced some of the craziest gigs of my life, and probably learned more than I did in a year of lessons. I also tip the hat to the great Jim Weider. He played in The Band after Robertson, and made a video that influenced me a ton, "Get That Classic Fender Sound."Spotify Playlist for Jim Weider's solo work, and with The Bandhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/1qN...Get That Classic Fender Soundhttps://www.homespun.com/shop/product...Gear Used:1983 JV TL-62 TelecasterStrings: Ernie Ball 10,13,15,24,32,42Pick:Blue Chip TPR 35 RB Amp:1959 Fender Harvard #askzac #guitartech #telecasterSupport the show

“It could have been a last waltz,” Bill Flanagan wrote, “instead, it turned out to be rock & roll's greatest half time show." Thirty years ago, Sony Music hosted Columbia Records Celebrates the Music of Bob Dylan at Madison Square Garden on October 16, 1992. A double-CD concert album and a concert film, both titled Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration were released to memorialize the event. This episode will memorialize the memorialization, contextualize the concert within the lineage of other great multiact, multiheaded concerts and festivals, and it will also strip bare some of the event's mythologization. In "20 Pounds of Headlines," we round up news from the world of Bob Dylan as it was in 1992 and today, including a brief clip of Dylan reading from his forthcoming THE PHILOSOPHY OF MODERN SONG, an update on his current tour itinerary, and a special guest review of another much more recent Bob Dylan Tribute Concert that took place at Town Hall in New York City, this review written by our listener Jon Olson of Arlington. In "Who Did It Better?" we ask you who did "When I Paint My Masterpiece" better live, Jerry Garcia and John Kahn or The Band (minus Robbie Robertson) with Richard Bell and Jim Weider on the stage of Madison Square Garden for Columbia Records Celebrates the Music of Bob Dylan? For past episodes featuring the music of the Columbia Records Celebrates the Music of Bob Dylan concert, look up the following episodes of HARD RAIN & SLOW TRAINS: BOB DYLAN & FELLOW TRAVELERS: 10/29/2020: “All Those Who've Sailed with Me: Bob Dylan & His Bands part 3,” 6/10/2021: “The Great Pretender: The Music of Chrissie Hynde,” 11/11/2021: “Bloomington,” and 11/25/2021: “Playing to the Big Crowds, Playing to the Cheap Seats: Bob Dylan & The Beatles part 2.” You might also like to listen to 10/8/2020: “The Rock Era” for some more context concerning multiact and multiheaded concerts and festivals.

The dirt farmer, a cultivator of land in Arkansas. Toiling in the fields with a rhythm of his own. Unique, not like Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich or Earl Palmer but a pulsating percolating personification that set the dirt farmer apart from every other drummer. My guest today is a guitar player with a unique and distinctive sound that roils in his hometown of Woodstock, NY. Unlike every long haired kid who showed up on a bus my guests roots are in Woodstock before Dave Holland and John Simon and Bernard Purdie, Chuck Rainey and John Sebastian moved up there. Even before the dirt farmer made it to big pink. My guest percolates with multiple musical units going to the lush green of Maine and the urban jungle of Philly playing guitars, mandolins and dobros passing on traditional roots music to future generations of big eared people. Let the body dance be it in Nashville or Georgia singing for your supper with Vassar Clements, Hargus Pig Robbins, Jerry Carrigan and Tut Taylor. He returned to Upstate New York in the early 1980s and connected with the dirt farmer who he had once known before. When that farmer was at big pink with fellow artists Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manual who played the Getaway Inn in Saugerties or some small bar in Auburn because they want to connect with the audience. It makes no difference how many amalgamation a of The Band there were. The peaks and valleys, the brown album to a blaze of glory. My guest was part of a band that wanted to play music they wanted to play. Not trying to make a hit for the suits but knowing that from organic creative story telling the magic will reveal itself....the musics hot and you might have to stand - Jim Weider welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

This week, we sat down with the legendary Jim Weider. Jim was born and raised in Woodstock, NY and from 1985-2000 he was the lead guitarist for the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductees The Band. His first ever show with The Band was a Crosby, Stills, and Nash reunion in Dallas Texas in front of over 30,000 people. Talk about baptism by fire. Throughout Jim’s career, he has jammed with Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, Scotty Moore of Elvis Presley’s original band, played with The Grateful Dead at Soldier field and rocked the stage at The Berlin Wall Concert in front of over 300,000. No single concert has ever been bigger in attendance. In 2013, The Weight Band formed when two former members of The Band, Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante, decided to continue The Band’s rich musical tradition. The Weight Band keeps the Woodstock spirit of The Band alive. In 2018, The Weight Band released an original album titled ‘World Gone Mad,’ a commentary on today’s divisive political climate and the hardship of American Life. In this conversation, Jim and I get into growing up in Woodstock, his time with The Band, jamming with Rock n Roll icons, the psychedelic culture, and more. Avi Bortnick joined Scofield's jam-oriented band in 2000 and has played rhythm guitar and electronics, along with co-producing and co-writing three records: Überjam, Up All Night, and Überjam Deux. He’s also played with Jim Weider, Zigaboo Modeliste, Bobby McFerrin, and his own Avi B Three. He’s known in musician circles for his rhythm guitar playing and ability to blend in a variety of musical configurations.   We spent quite a bit of time on this call talking about Avi’s prolific side hustles, which include App Development, and consulting in a unique niche industry. Because he has these other income sources, he never feels pressure to take a gig or work with someone he really doesn’t want to work with. Plus, it allows him to live in NYC and be centrally located to the places he enjoys being near. Avi also had some great advice for other guitarists. It only takes a few seconds of watching Mike Bram play drums to know how much joy it brings him. The same can be said of talking to him about music and the incredible journey he’s been on since he climbed behind his first kit at just five years old. While Mike has spent the last several years on tour with Jason Mraz as both his drummer and musical director, it hasn’t stopped him from being kept busy by the likes of Cindy Cashdollar, Willie Nelson, Zac Brown, Joss Stone, G. Love and Special Sauce, and Johnny Nicholas, to name just a few. Currently, you can catch Mike behind his Gretsch Brooklyn series drum kit on the road with The Weight Band, performing the songs of the Band, with Jim Weider, Marty Grebb, Brian Mitchell, and Albert Rogers.
