Parents and youth ministers in the Catholic church want their children to grow up and attend a parish where they can get sustained formation. The problem is that many parishes are not actually equipped with leaders who can do that effectively. Even with well-trained youth leaders, the capacity is limited in parishes that are not well-led and where the culture isn't healthy at its core. This is how your best people end up burnt out because they aren't being given the support needed to thrive. As parish leaders, we're often waiting for the "next generation" to come to us, or perhaps they're already here, but they're leaving because we aren't connecting in the way that they need us to. It's vital for us to address these growing concerns, be willing to break away from what no longer works and reimagine the way that we reach the next generation with the love of Jesus! This week's guest helps parishes create a culture where this type of change can happen. Joel Stepanek is the VP of Parish Services at Life Teen, an organization that provides a safe and fun place for youth to experience Catholic community, get answers to their questions, and, most importantly, experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. Our conversation dives into some of our deep-seated cultural norms and offers incredible insight about how we can more effectively engage young people in the Church.
Where do you fall in a four-part square made up of Subversives, Managers, Squatters & Enablers? Joel Stepanek gives a fresh look at how the dynamic between people within an organization builds culture, impacts toxicity in work environments and ultimately, determines what kind of fruit that organization bears.

DescriptionHow do you approach getting and receiving feedback for the talks you give? Is it something you build into your routine? Or something you avoid like the plague? And when you get feedback - do you know what to do with it? In my conversation with Joel Stepanek we jumped deep into this topic and many other topics related to the spiritual life of speakers, what kind of microphone he prefers (oh he's got some big feelings about that one), and who his biggest influences are as a communicator. Joel has been actively involved in ministry for over 15 years. He currently serves as the Vice President of Parish Services for Life Teen International where he guides several teams that support Catholic parishes in creating and sustaining vibrant youth ministries that form Catholic evangelists and disciples.Joel is a sought after speaker and author of several books, including “Chasing Humility: 8 Ways to Shape a Christian Heart,” Joel holds a Master of Arts degree in religious education with an emphasis in youth and young adult ministry from Fordham University in New York City and a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University-Global. Have you ever read the Litany of Humility? It's like a death sentence for your comfort and desires. Humility is possibly the most important virtue. If pride is the root of all sin, it would follow that humility would be the solution to all sin. Joel Stepanek has fought to become extremely well versed in the virtue of humility. He loves humility so much that he wrote a book on it! In Chasing Humility, Joel breaks down the best ways to lay a strong foundation for the Christian life. You can purchase a copy of this life changing book here. Most virtues don't grow naturally or by accident, but this is especially true for humility. If you do not actively seek out wisdom and practical ways to grow in this king of virtues, you will be a slave to pride. Check out the rest of Joel's work and follow him on Instagram @chasinghumility !!!

So here's our look at how it's possible for time to pass, why we don't get more retrospective (and why we should change that), how ministry impacts our lives, and good ways for us to grow in holiness and grace as we carry out the work before us. All that, plus some points from Joel Stepanek. If you're really interested in some ministerial leadership tips, check out his webinar.
