Amidst political maneuvers, power grabs, conditional allegiances, threats, oppression, and terrible advice, a king is crowned and a kingdom divided. And precisely NOone comes out looking like a saint. We too live in violent and divided times, and while Mennonites haven't traditionally recognized the big “S” Saints of other Christian traditions, following in the Way of Jesus does mean seeking to live as a good ancestor for those who will come after. On this All Hallowed Souls and Saints Sunday, we remember the beloved souls who, having impacted our church community, joined the communion of good SMC ancestors in the last year.Sermon begins at minute marker 8:041 Kings 12.1-17, 25-29ResourcesBibleWorm podcast: Episode 508 – The Division of the Kingdom, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, Jr.“Strong, Peaceful Man of Galilee, “ Voices Together 573, text by Harry W. Peter is no longer the frightened fisherman denying Jesus. Just 50 days later, having seen the risen Lord and restored by Him, Peter's Pentecost speech reveals the Holy Spirit's power within him. Quoting David to thousands gathered in Jerusalem, he clearly shows Jesus is the Messiah, whom the crowd had crucified just 7 weeks prior. Cut to the heart, they ask what they should do. The answer is simple and direct. He calls them, and us today, to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. The Holy Spirit was for them, and us too, God's precious gift to empower us from within. 3000 people became baptized believers in Jesus that day. By the working of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God and Baptism, we can be as confidant as Peter and the crowd that Jesus is alive, and for us. We can be ready for the day of His return. In the book of Deuteronomy God commands his people to rest one day a week because they had been slaves in Egypt and he wants them to be free from a production-based slavery system designed to own and control them. And by learning to observe Sabbath, we too can experience the God-given freedom from being owned by money, work, and materialism, and find our acceptance in his love for us in Jesus. Jesus' ascension doesn't mean that he's no longer here; instead, Paul insists in his letter to the Ephesians that it means he now fills all things. In other words, Jesus can now be everywhere where his word is preached, his sacraments are celebrated, and his people are gathered in his name. God, by resting and enjoying his good work, has built the pattern of work and Sabbath rest into his creation. By faithfully observing God's command to cease from work, we learn to trust him and lean on him to provide for us; in other words, to learn how to live in our justification by faith. Many evangelicals feel that the Lutheran doctrine of baptismal regeneration is a betrayal of the great Reformational themes of salvation by grace through faith alone, but in reality God saving his people through the waters of baptism is actually the guarantee of the Three Solas. The resurrection of Jesus is not just a good ending to a good story; as Jesus tells his disciples, it's the guarantee that the great eschatological repentance and forgiveness of sins has happened in space and time, and now God and humanity can be reconciled. The evidence for the historicity of the empty tomb and the earliest Jesus-community's experience of the physically risen Christ is overwhelming. It's now clear that God's new creation has broken into human history and is bringing life into places, people, and relationships that were trapped in death. The main redemptive event of the Old Testament is the story of the Exodus, and when Jesus goes to Jerusalem to take over the kingdom of the world by dying and rising from the dead he intentionally does so on Passover - the Jewish celebration of the Exodus event. And by doing so Jesus brings to completion the great biblical story of release from slavery, vindication of God's glory, destruction of His enemies, and universal forgiveness of sins. While God's name isn't mentioned in the book of Esther, it's very clear that he is powerfully active through the story, defending his people. Frequently, this looks like coincidental circumstances that turn out for good, but those coincidences are in fact lovingly choreographed by the God who controls all things. We tend to place our hope in many things, such as our abilities, jobs, savings, doctors, politicians, etc. None of these are bad in and of themselves. However, in his conversation with a man named Nicodemaus, Jesus teaches us to place our hope not in the things of this world, but in God. This hope is not in just any god, but a specific God comprised of three entities, or persons. Explore the mystery of the Trinity and why followers of Jesus place their hope in this God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When God ordered his creation he did so by the power of his Holy Spirit, his image (in Adam & Eve), and his Word. When God orders his new creation, inaugurated at the baptism of Jesus, he also does it through his Spirit, his Word, and his image - Jesus, the express image of God himself. Stuck between the suffering of this age and the return of Jesus and the new creation, we frequently don't know what to pray for. But the Holy Spirit, who convinces us that we are indeed God's daughters and sons, also prays to the Father through us on our behalf. Our instrumental version of Holy, Holy, Holyblessings,Shiloh Worship Musicwww.shilohworshipmusic.comHoly, Holy, Holy is a Christian hymn written by Reginald Heber (1783-1826).[1][2][3] Its lyrics speak specifically on the Trinity,[2][3] having been written for use on Trinity Sunday.[3] John Dykes composed the tune Nicaea for this hymn in 1861.[3] It references the Sanctus, which is often called the "Holy holy holy" in English. The name is a tribute to the First Council of Nicaea which formalized the doctrine of the trinity in 325.[2][3] The text paraphrases Isaiah 6:1-5.Written by John B.
