Peter is no longer the frightened fisherman denying Jesus. Just 50 days later, having seen the risen Lord and restored by Him, Peter's Pentecost speech reveals the Holy Spirit's power within him. Quoting David to thousands gathered in Jerusalem, he clearly shows Jesus is the Messiah, whom the crowd had crucified just 7 weeks prior. Cut to the heart, they ask what they should do. The answer is simple and direct. He calls them, and us today, to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. The Holy Spirit was for them, and us too, God's precious gift to empower us from within. 3000 people became baptized believers in Jesus that day. By the working of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God and Baptism, we can be as confidant as Peter and the crowd that Jesus is alive, and for us. We can be ready for the day of His return. In the book of Deuteronomy God commands his people to rest one day a week because they had been slaves in Egypt and he wants them to be free from a production-based slavery system designed to own and control them. And by learning to observe Sabbath, we too can experience the God-given freedom from being owned by money, work, and materialism, and find our acceptance in his love for us in Jesus. Jesus' ascension doesn't mean that he's no longer here; instead, Paul insists in his letter to the Ephesians that it means he now fills all things. In other words, Jesus can now be everywhere where his word is preached, his sacraments are celebrated, and his people are gathered in his name. God, by resting and enjoying his good work, has built the pattern of work and Sabbath rest into his creation. By faithfully observing God's command to cease from work, we learn to trust him and lean on him to provide for us; in other words, to learn how to live in our justification by faith. Many evangelicals feel that the Lutheran doctrine of baptismal regeneration is a betrayal of the great Reformational themes of salvation by grace through faith alone, but in reality God saving his people through the waters of baptism is actually the guarantee of the Three Solas. The main redemptive event of the Old Testament is the story of the Exodus, and when Jesus goes to Jerusalem to take over the kingdom of the world by dying and rising from the dead he intentionally does so on Passover - the Jewish celebration of the Exodus event. And by doing so Jesus brings to completion the great biblical story of release from slavery, vindication of God's glory, destruction of His enemies, and universal forgiveness of sins. The Bible tells us to put away unrighteous anger, but it also commands us to have righteous anger. Because anger is a response to what we love being attacked, righteous anger happens when we love God's glory and character enough to be angry when it's attacked. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus asks us to give up money, time, and food. While God's name isn't mentioned in the book of Esther, it's very clear that he is powerfully active through the story, defending his people. Frequently, this looks like coincidental circumstances that turn out for good, but those coincidences are in fact lovingly choreographed by the God who controls all things. We now live in a post-Christian world that has rejected God, and it seems sometimes that he - if he exists - has done nothing to defend himself or his people. Esther lived in a similar world, and the book of Esther is the perfect antidote for those who believe that the apparent silence of God means that he doesn't care or won't act. Jesus took on our flesh, to transform us. The humanity of God means that now we can love with the love of Jesus, we can experience and share the peace of Jesus, and we can hear and speak the word of Jesus. The Bible tells us that we can't see God because he's invisible, and even if we were physically able to see him his holiness would consume us in our sinfulness. But Scripture also says that without seeing God we are doomed. How does God solve this dilemma? He becomes visible and accessible to us by becoming a human like us, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.
