Discussing the Impact of the Proposed Remote ID Rule on Hardware, Costs, Hobby Flying, and the Overall Drone Industry... Today's show is about FAA's NPRM for Remote ID for drones. Jon McBride from RMUS joins us to discuss how this proposed rule will impact the drone industry as a whole. We start this show with Jon sharing some interesting experiences from his 30-year long flying career. We discuss how public perceptions and drone laws have evolved over the years. Next, Jon provides his take on the Remote Identification NPRM. At his company, RMUS, Jon has been building all kinds of custom drones and drone accessories. He shares how the passage of this proposed rule could make current equipment non-compliant. In our previous blog post, Vic has discussed all the additional costs that a drone pilot will have to bear if this NPRM were to go through. Jon also discusses the potential impact on hobby flying at length. A long-time AMA member, Jon shares how the inability to fly nowhere else but in the FRIA's will severely restrict the hobby pilot. We also discuss the rationale behind this proposed rule. Is there a need for network-based Remote ID when DJI drones are already equipped with a broadcast-based system? And, can Remote ID truly help keep nefarious activity in check? We wrap up this show by discussing the impact of this proposed rule on drone pilot privacy and safety. If you are a responsible community member, tuning in to this show will surely give you an interesting perspective. Fly Safe! Do you wish to learn from world-class pilots with real world experience? When it comes to social media, it's easy to focus on the fun and funny. A clever .gif here, a cat meme there, rinse and repeat. But in February 2018, the social media team at BYU adopted a much more serious tone on their Instagram Story. In a series of videos and text updates, featuring students, staff, and faculty, BYU proactively talked about sexual assault on campus. In this episode of the Hashtag Higher Ed Podcast, Jon McBride, Media Relations and Social Media Manager at BYU, shares the genesis of this idea, the key to earning institutional buy-in for the idea, the unanticipated Instagram feature that helped make an immediate difference for students, and the surprisingly stressful component of the project.
We've talked extensively about the problem with provider directories. It's a fundamental issue in healthcare administration and many of our processes are built on top of it. I've called it healthcare's ultimate death by paper cut. Now, we're starting to see new solutions in the market. Last week we looked at an open-source industry solution. This week we're looking at the statewide effort in California. California's Senate Bill 137 (SB-137), the "toothiest" provider directory law to date, set the stage for a state-wide collaboration that would have been otherwise difficult to attain. Today I'm joined by Jon McBride, CTO at Integrated Healthcare Associates and Rajan Shah, VP of Business Development at Gaine Healthcare to learn more about California's Provider Directory Utility and find out what happens when you get the entire healthcare industry rowing in the same direction to solve a well defined problem. 3:25 The Integrated Healthcare Association convenes diverse stakeholders to solve industry-wide inefficiencies in a non-competitive environment to find common ground solutions. 4:45 What is the California Provider Directory Utility (PDU) and how does it affect me? 7:13 How does Gaine Healthcare's data management solutions work with Availity and Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA)? 9:13 The plumbing of the data points, finding relevant data sources, and going to where the data already is. 11:44 Big launch or small pilots? How does IHA plan to take on such a big project? 14:35 How tough are the regulatory hurdles? Is California working with you or against you? 17:12 What are the key metrics to demonstrate that you're making progress? 19:10 Were there any difficult or surprising issues in bringing stakeholders together? What was your approach to solving a common problem without doing the same old thing that got us here in the first place? 22:15 Now that regulators are serious about enforcing this law, everyone is rowing the same direction. This is collaboration like we've never had before. We're building an industry utility that everyone will benefit from. 25:35 The money set aside to be used for this project was from the merger of Blue Shield and Care First. What's the plan to keep it funded as a utility in the long run? 27:55 An overview of the solution. What is the PDU? Architecture, components and points of interaction. 31:50 The integration model. Are you really going to go to every provider in the state 1-by-1? Do you have the staff for such a large operation? 34:00 How do you deal with over 300 large provider organizations, more than 50 different managed care plans and thousands of mom and pop practice with widely different EHRs and not a lot of technical support? 36:30 What are you doing that helps you manage mass integration with smaller staff? How do you scale high touch? The tech platform plays critical role. We do all the integration. Health plans and providers don't have to change their process and won't need additional staff. 43:01 The power of effective regulation. 44:41 Soft launch. What is it? The 3 phases are data integration, day to day operations, and attestation. 51:00 This was the right time to get the problem solved. We have 40M people waiting on us and the benefits of fixing this problem will be huge! The PDU is in soft launch through the end of 2018 and will be available to providers and health plans across California in early 2019. Sign up here to receive updates about our progress and launch. Former astronaut, Jon McBride, has lived a remarkable life. From the time he was a young boy he had dreams of going to space. He later became an astronaut on the maiden voyage of The Columbia Space Shuttle. Saying that Jon has several years of military, NASA and business experience hardly covers what he has accomplished throughout his life. Along with being an aeronautical engineer, fighter pilot, aviator, naval officer and astronaut, Jon is also a kind, wise man. He's likable and down-to-earth (despite going to space). In this episode, Jon talks about his mission on The Columbia Space Shuttle. His crew observed the earth from space and made important observations, including the examination of spiral eddies in the ocean. Jon also explains the benefits of space exploration for society. Tens of thousands of patented technologies come from, and continue to be developed from, NASA research. These technologies are used every day by you and me. Many of these advancements are common place now, but were major breakthroughs at the time. An example? How about GPS. It makes sense that Jon would be an advocate for education and he encourages all “youngsters”, as he would say, to study hard. He believes education is the road to success. Throughout this episode, Jon gives many tips on how to achieve your dreams. Finally, he answers questions from viewers on just about everything you can imagine. What going to the bathroom in space is like, aliens, sleeping in space, and many others. Take time to listen to a man who has left a tremendous legacy behind him. His wisdom and experience will blow you away. Key Takeaways: [:35] Astronaut, Jon McBride is introduced. His list of accomplishment and accolades is impressive. [4:45] Jon talks about the highlights of his life and career. [7:47] Jon's mission on the Space Shuttle was an Earth Observation Mission. [17:28] Jon stresses the importance of taking advantage of education, the better you do in school the more opportunities will be available to you. The road to success is education. [19:57] Dr. Jaime and Jon honor the loss of the crew aboard the space shuttle Challenger in it's tragic last flight. Learn from other people's mistakes. [23:13] How do you go to the bathroom in space!? [26:00] Questions from viewers, answers from Jon!
