Welcome to your weekly UAS News update, we have 3 stories for you: Amazon resumes operations after two drones crash into a crane, Flock Safety launches Aerodome Drone as Automated Security, and Phase One releases a 247MP camera! First up, Amazon Prime Air has resumed delivery flights after two of its MK30 aircraft collided with a mobile crane in Tolleson, Arizona. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 1st when a construction crane was doing roofing work at a business. The two drones impacted the crane a few minutes apart, with one falling to the ground and catching on fire. Both the FAA and NTSB have begun investigations. Amazon resumed operations on Friday, October 3rd, raising questions about whether Amazon is prioritizing conducting operations over safety. According to DroneXL, this incident is the 4th reported crash this year by an Amazon MK30, and the second time the system has been grounded. In January, Amazon halted operations after two MK30s crashed during testing in Oregon due to faulty LiDAR programming. This event hasn't yet hit the NTSB's CAROL database, but we'll likely get more information if or when it does. Next up, Flock Safety has released their Aerodome Drone as Automated Security (DAS). This system is designed to be a turn-key solution for security patrols. This is a separate product and mission profile from Drones as First Responder, and caters to the private entity looking for a similar solution. It appears that Flock is using the DJI Dock 3 and the Matrice 4D, with Flock's own back-end deployment software. The system also integrates with Flock's ecosystem through FlockOS, allowing private entities to utilize alarm panels, video management systems, license plate readers, and audio sensors. Way to diversify! Last up this week, Phase One has released a 247MP photogrammetry camera! If you're unfamiliar with Phase One, they've been a well-known name in the mapping space for their high-megapixel cameras. This week they released the iXM-RS250, with a resolution of 19,200×12,800 pixels and a new IIQ-X compression format, which reduces file size by 90% when compared to 16-bit TIFFs. The new camera is also said to reduce mapping times by 30% compared to previous systems. For those operators who fly large missions and deal with terabytes of data, this could be a game-changer. The iXM-RS250 is immediately compatible with the DJI Matrice 400, and features a USB 3.0 and 10G ethernet for other systems. At this time, Phase One has not released any pricing for the iXM-RS250, but it's safe to say it'll be pricey! And on Post Flight, our show where we share our opinions, we won't be talking about part 108… We will be discussing these stories and Sikorsky, who has released an entire family of VTOL drones. Have a great weekend, and we'll see you next week! https://dronexl.co/2025/10/08/phase-one-247mp-drone-camera-intergeo/https://dronexl.co/2025/10/03/amazon-resumes-drone-deliveries-days-after-tolleson-crane-crash-and-fire/https://dronexl.co/2025/09/30/flock-safety-aerodome-das-drone-security/

https://hub.pilotinstitute.com/pilot-institute-mugWelcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have three stories for you this week. DJI Mini 5 Pro leaks and a possible release date, Department of Commerce to release regulations around trade and importation of drones, and finally, a 30-mile medical delivery by drone in Kansas.First up this week, it looks like the DJI Mini 5 Pro is right around the corner. Trustworthy sources and leaked images are pointing to a September 16th launch, with the drone hitting store shelves as soon as September 17th. The marketing slogan is "Pro in Mini," and based on the leaked specs, they are not kidding! The biggest news is that DJI has apparently managed to pack a 1-inch sensor into a sub-250-gram drone. The camera is rumored to have an F/1.8 lens, which should be fantastic for low-light performance. Leaked photos also clearly show what looks like forward-facing LiDAR, which will help with obstacle avoidance and protecting that big new gimbal and sensor. European pricing has also been spotted, with the base model and the screenless RC-N3 remote starting at 799 euros. The Fly More Combo with the RC2 controller is expected to be around 1129 euros. There's even a rumor that you might be able to use your Mini 3 and Mini 4 batteries in the new Mini 5. Wouldn't that be awesome? The one major catch, especially given our next story, is that the Mini 5 probably won't be available in the United States. We'll have to wait and see on that one.Next up, according to a report from Reuters, the U.S. Commerce Department will release regulations to address national security risks. These rules will target the information and communications technology in drones from China and other foreign adversaries. While the announcement didn't give specific details, this action follows the ANPRM we saw earlier this year. It's important to note that this ANPRM is and was separate from the existing audit requirements set forth in the 2024 NDAA for DJI and Autel. At this time, there is NO preview or draft text of the ruling from the Department of Commerce, but we'll keep you updated when we see one.Last up, Kansas just made history with the state's first-ever long-range medical drone delivery. In a landmark test flight, the Community HealthCare System used a Pyka autonomous drone to deliver an AED to a rural hospital in Onaga. The 30-mile flight took only 30 minutes, a journey that would have taken a courier van over an hour. The drone used was the Pyka Pelican Cargo, which is a VTOL aircraft with a 70kg or 150lb payload and a range of 200 miles. For this mission, the drone flew autonomously along a pre-approved FAA flight plan. The project was a collaboration between the healthcare system, Kansas State University, and the Kansas Department of Transportation. This is a great use of drones and one of the best uses of delivery drones in my opinion. On post-flight we'll also be talking about our comments for the Part 108 NPRM! We'll see you on Monday for the live, have a great weekend! https://dronexl.co/2025/09/08/dji-mini-5-launch-release-date-leak/https://dronexl.co/2025/09/07/kansas-medical-drone-delivery/https://dronexl.co/2025/09/05/trump-administration-chinese-drone-imports/https://hub.pilotinstitute.com/pilot-institute-mug

Meeting notes for Sponable on Tuesday , August 5, 20245 interview:We welcomed back Jess Sponable, who shared his expertise on the feasibility of the Golden Dome defense system, drawing from his experience with DARPA and DCX. Jess explained that while Golden Dome is technically possible, it would require significant software and sensor technology development, and he noted that the US has robust safeguards against nuclear threats. David and Jess briefly touched on the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Japan to end World War II but did not focus on that topic as part of this program. We did briefly discuss the historical context of nuclear weapons and the decision to drop the atomic bomb to end World War II, emphasizing the potential human cost of an invasion of Japan. I expressed gratitude for President Truman's decision, which he believes saved millions of lives. I then shifted the conversation to vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology, tracing its origins to science fiction and highlighting key figures like Phil Bono and Max Hunter who advocated for fully reusable VTOL systems.Jess discussed the evolution of single-stage-to-orbit and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) concepts, highlighting early crude designs and the Chrysler Beta space shuttle concept. He shared his experience with the DCX program, which flew a subsonic proof of concept demonstrator for a vertical takeoff, landing Lox hydrogen-powered rocket. Jess noted the advantages of VTOL systems, such as a simple launch complex and rapid turnaround times, and mentioned that technology has improved significantly since then. He also mentioned two ongoing efforts for single-stage-to-orbit horizontal takeoff and landing and discussed various companies, including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Rocket Lab, and Relativity Space, that are working towards 100% reusability in space travel. Our guest discussed the reliability and safety of future flight systems, particularly focusing on vertical takeoff and landing vehicles. He compared the engineering challenges of these systems to the development of traditional aircraft, emphasizing the need for reliable engine performance and lightweight designs. David explained that modern rocket engines, with their high thrust-to-weight ratios and simplified designs, could lead to safer and more efficient flight systems in the future.Jess talked about the potential of liquid natural gas as a cheap and clean propellant for future space travel and point-to-point transportation systems. He explained that New Frontier Aerospace, his company, is focusing on developing a system that is more reliable and cost-effective than traditional airplanes, with a target of 2-hour travel times to 98% of global destinations. I mentioned that other companies are experimenting & developing point-to-point travel using orbital vehicles. Jess said that his New Frontier Aerospace is developing a different approach that avoids going to orbit, using a throttle-down rocket for long-distance travel. He also noted that their engine is in the final stages of qualification and will be used in both an orbital transfer vehicle and a delta-wing shaped airframe configuration for initial flights.Jess proceeded to discuss the noise levels of hypersonic vehicles, explaining that while they would be loud during takeoff, the noise would be minimal at cruising altitude of 160,000 feet, similar to a refrigerator or dishwasher. He noted that flight testing would be necessary to determine exact sound levels, and initial operations might focus on unmanned air vehicles. He also described their orbital transfer vehicle, Bifrost, which can transport payloads between various orbits and lunar orbit, powered by their Maelstrom engine.Jess was asked about his company's status as a private, equity and government contract-funded entity. He noted a potential for future public listing but currently focusing on careful growth. He explained that while interns have been considered, the company prioritizes experienced hires due to its early stage and ITAR restrictions on hiring foreign students. David also addressed questions about the DCX hardware, which is now in museums, and clarified that while the company aims to operate from airports rather than spaceports, noise and regulatory concerns need to be addressed with flight test data. He emphasized the importance of operability in system design and distinguished his company's approach from competitors like Boom Aerospace, highlighting its focus on vertical takeoff and landing, lower cost, and potential for both military and commercial markets.Jess went on to discuss a small rocket vehicle with 6 feet by 6 feet dimensions, weighing 3,000 pounds and providing 3,000 pounds of thrust, capable of 5 km/s delta-V and carrying 200-400 kg payload from LEO to GEO. He explained that while the vehicle could be scaled up, larger configurations would require higher propellant mass fractions and different tank configurations, with Falcon 9's second stage as an example of a high-performance design at 87-88% propellant fraction. Jess also noted that LOX/LNG is significantly easier to refuel in orbit than LOX/hydrogen, and discussed the possibility of using multiple engines for lunar lander applications, with existing commercial landers demonstrating feasibility on Falcon 9.Advancing Space Exploration and TechnologyAs we were coming to the close of the program, our guest discussed the progress and challenges in space exploration, highlighting the importance of vertical takeoff and landing systems in the commercial space industry. He expressed optimism about the future of space travel, emphasizing the potential for rapid growth in reusable launch systems and the role of NASA in facilitating this progress. He also addressed the development of nuclear fusion, noting that while significant breakthroughs are still years away, commercial investment in the field is encouraging. He concluded by advocating for continued innovation and collaboration between the private sector and government agencies to advance space exploration and technology. This summary is available at www.thespaceshow.com for this day and date program. This is Watts & Wheels, a new motoring show hosted by motoring journalist (and “buzzhead” – or is that “electronhead”?) William Kelly and TechCentral editor (and wannabe EV owner) Duncan McLeod. With a focus on the shift to electric motoring, the pilot season of Watts & Wheels consists of three episodes. The focus of the show is the “lived EV experience”, with the aim of helping “dispel some of the misconceptions” about owning and driving an EV in South Africa. What else can you expect from Watts & Wheels? We'll look at the latest EV models – from mild hybrids to plug-in hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles – making their way to South African shores. We'll also test drive many of them for the show. We'll also look at the business of motoring, and the challenges and opportunities facing the local industry amid the tectonic shifts that are remaking the global automotive sector, including the rapid rise of Chinese EV brands. Whether you're pondering your first EV purchase, are keen to understand the nuances of local charging networks or are simply fascinated by the future of sustainable transport, let Watts & Wheels be your guide. In episode 1, William and Duncan dive into: • The different types of new energy vehicles available in South Africa, explaining terms like EV, BEV, HEV, PHEV and REEV. What do they all mean, and how are prospective buyers to choose between these technologies? • Should consumers really be worried about long-term battery health in EVs? Spoiler alert: no! In fact, the data now shows battery endurance in EVs has been vastly underestimated. • The power of VTOL, or vehicle-to-load, technology and how it can be used to power everything from a kettle to your house. • The electrification of bakkies, including a look at BYD's exciting new Shark 6 PHEV (and whether it can beat the monstrous 3l Ford Raptor from a standing start to 100km/h); Nissan's sexy Frontier PHEV (not confirmed for South Africa); and Ford's new PHEV Ranger (made in Silverton in Pretoria). • The controversial Jaguar Type 00 – and why William thinks why the critics have it completely wrong. Jess Sponable Returns: A Call for Entrepreneurial Leadership in Aerospace and Defense, Friday Space Show, May 30, 2025Jess Sponable returned to the program to discuss his recent Op-Ed, co-authored with retired Air Force General Steve Kwast, published on April 7, 2025, in The Washington Times (www.washingtontimes.com/news/2025/apr/7/time-build-culture-entrepreneurs-nasa). The piece emphasizes the urgent need for more entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs across NASA, the aerospace industry, and the defense sector.During the show, Jess expanded on what this kind of leadership entails and why it's essential—especially within public agencies and NGOs. Our conversation became a compelling case study in the urgent need for innovation in R&D, problem-solving, financing, and strategic thinking. Jess represented that it would be the entrepreneurs to bring this leadership to bear in these crucial industries and government organizations.Jess emphasized that entrepreneurial-style leadership is key to motivating teams and driving meaningful progress. Drawing on his own experience, he shared vivid historical examples, particularly from the 1950s to 1970s, including insights into the X-plane programs and early developments in both military and commercial jets.We explored a wide range of current and forward-looking topics, including returning to the Moon, future human missions to Mars, and the transformative roles of companies like SpaceX, Starship, and Starlink. A major portion of the conversation centered around the Golden Dome project. Jess advocated strongly for a space-based rather than Earth-based architecture, explaining the reasoning behind his position—though he noted uncertainty about whether the project's planners would adopt this vision. He also addressed public concerns about space weaponization and outlined the type of satellite constellation the Golden Dome would likely require.Security implications were also discussed. Jess addressed vulnerabilities outside Golden Dome protection, such as U.S. ports and maritime assets—an issue raised by a listener. While acknowledging that no system could be perfect, he argued that the Golden Dome could prevent mass destruction and preserve national survival.Later in the program, caller Dallas Bienhoff joined the conversation to discuss the development of cislunar economic infrastructure and upcoming Blue Origin rocket capabilities. Jess highlighted companies like Stoke Space, Rocket Lab, and Blue Origin as key players driving launch costs down—a necessary step to reach the milestone of $100 per pound to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which he identified as a transformative threshold for space access.Toward the end of the show, Jess briefly touched on the current state of human spaceflight medicine, including the potential of rotating stations for artificial gravity. However, he reiterated that reducing launch costs and fostering entrepreneurial leadership must come first.Additional topics included Jess's extensive background with the DC-X, reusable VTOL launch projects, his work with DARPA and the U.S. Air Force, and an exciting update on his company, New Frontier Aerospace. The company is pursuing hypersonic flight capable of West Coast–to–Asia travel in just a few hours by skimming the edge of the stratosphere. Listen to the details he provided us.Don't miss this dynamic and wide-ranging conversation. Jess is expected to return after New Frontier's demonstration flight next year. We wish him—and the entire industry—continued success in overcoming the technical, political, budgetary, and policy challenges that lie ahead. Airplanes are wonderful things. They fly through the air and move people and goods at rapid speeds around the world.  However, they have some downsides. In order to take off and land, an airplane requires an enormous amount of land for runways.  So, for over a century, aeronautical engineers have been trying to create a vehicle that has all the strengths of an airplane but could take off and land like a helicopter. ….and they've kind of done it.  Learn more about vertical take-off and landing aircraft and the challenges in designing them on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. Ultimately, it is better than you could know. God calls us to show up, no matter the outcome. The outcome has nothing to do with you, even when you bring your A-game every day. Everybody has a broader network than they think they do. People are almost always willing to give of themselves when asked.   "My job is to do my best work always, to show up and bring a Christ-centered, Kingdom-centered focus to the workplace, to my co-workers, to my partners, and do the best I possibly can. And He will ordain that outcome, and I will be the beneficiary one way or the other." —  Scott Pomeroy About Scott Pomeroy: Scott Pomeroy is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of XTI Aerospace. In this episode, Michal talks to us about the reasons why he set up ZURI to develop a hybrid VTOL aircraft to unlock regional air mobility. He talks about the latest design phase, which was announced at the end of 2022, and also share more details about their current roadmap - which includes some exciting flight tests performed earlier this year. While ZURI's goal is to change the way people experience on-demand, door-to-door mid-range flights, Michal talks about the value its aircraft can have on the future aviation market, as well as the various different use cases the aircraft can be configured for - such as medievac and cargo logistics. We also talk about the cost. advantages of hybrid aircraft over conventional aircraft and helicopters, and Michal provides an update on their latest fundraising round.

You are listening to part 2 of my chat with Joe who joined the USAF in 1981 and was trained to fly the A10 Warthog a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air support to ground forces by attacking tanks, armoured vehicles, and other ground targets. Part 1 is here https://coldwarconversations.com/episode305/ In 1985 Joe is sent to 92nd Tactical Fighter Squadron at RAF Bentwaters in the UK, just over 50 miles from where his father served in World War 2. His role was to fly the A10 over West Germany and attack Warsaw Pact ground forces should the Cold War turn hot. We hear about the perils of flying the A10 at only 100 feet in mist and rain, whilst navigating with a map on your knee in the days before GPS was available.  Joe also recounts visiting the Inner German border and driving to his wartime target sectors to see what they looked like from the ground. He describes how they trained for landing on West German autobahns as well as their tactics against enemy aircraft. Joe also flew the Royal Air Force's VTOL fighter, the Harrier, and tells of the challenge of managing the controls and his respect for the Royal Air Force.
