In local news, Boone will be celebrating ‘Earth Weekend' this weekend in honor of Earth Day, which is Saturday, April 22nd. According to The Watauga Democrat, Boone will be having different events, such as live music, free giveaways, food samples, and more, in addition to the Boone Clean Up Day. Now called “Earth Third Friday” which is held in Downtown Boone every April, the Earth Day events will kick off at 5pm on Friday, April 21st. People can also visit the Jones House lawn to learn more about programs in Boone that promote sustainability and more.  In state news, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools now require schools to profit on student pictures. The CMS's new mandate on profiting on student picture packages is a way of fundraising, according to the Charlotte Observer. There have been concerns from families about this policy saying things such as, “How is this equitable for all families?” However, according to the Charlotte Observer, there are regulations being set to protect families from being overcharged. In national news, South Florida residents are dealing with widespread flooding and damage after a historic rainfall hit. According to Claire Hardwick from the Associated Press, people in Fort Lauderdale lost their cars, furniture, and houses due to the flood. The water in Florida accumulated up to 4 feet over this past week. Cars are still stuck or are being towed through the water, and residents and their families do what they can to recover from all of this damage. Now onto sports. The NBA playoffs kicked off this weekend, with lots of surprises already coming early in the first games of the first round. The one seeded Bucks took a loss to the 8 seeded Heat 130-117, even with Miami's Tyler Herro suffering an injury. But, the Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a back injury as well, the Bucks best player and MVP candidate. The Lakers also defeated the 2 seeded Grizzlies out in the West, with Rui Hachimura and Austin Reeves leading the way for LA. And lastly, the Kings get their first playoff win since 2006, defeating the Golden State Warriors, the reigning champs, 126-123.  In App State news, the Sun Belt Championship has kicked off for the Women's Golf team. The Mountaineers traveled down to Dayton Beach and are playing at the LPGA International Course. Best of luck ladies! And the App State tennis team just keeps on cruising, with the Mountaineers defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd in a top four Sun Belt showdown on Saturday, before defeating Radford on Sunday in a shutout, 5-0. Good afternoon everyone, my name is Jenna Guzman here with your afternoon news break for May 2nd, 2023. Let's get started. In local news, a new gallery exhibit will be featured in the Jones House. According to the Watauga Democrat, the gallery will feature images of animals which were photographed over the past century and a half. The images are all courtesy of the Digital Watauga Project. The exhibit will be in the Jones House from May 3rd to May 30th. The opening reception will be held Friday, May 5th from 5 to 7 P.M. According to the Watauga Democrat, the Digital Watauga Project will be donating 20% print sales revenue to the Watauga County Humane Society. In state news, more than half of the buildings on UNC-Chapel Hill's campus contain lead. According to WRAL, after water testing on all of the campus' buildings was completed after almost a year, it was found that 149 buildings out of the 262 buildings tested had lead detected in water fixtures. Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and Risk Management George Battle told WRAL that "We started remediation of those fixtures where we found lead during the testing so that process continues.” In addition to this, the school will now test buildings built before 2014 every three years starting next year. In national news, a new mystery balloon has been spotted. According to NBC News, the U.S. military is tracking a balloon that flew over Hawaii last week. Three U.S. officials told NBC News that they do not know who owns it, however, it does pose a threat as it is not “communicating signals.” According to NBC News, it is unclear whether or not the balloon is a weather device. The balloon also appears to not be controlled by someone or something. It is now headed in the direction of Mexico. Officials are still investigating who this object belongs to. Now onto sports. Good afternoon everyone! My name is Andrew Travers and this is your final Tuesday afternoon sports break of the spring semester. In App State sports news, the Mountaineer baseball team will be in action here in Boone later today as they take on ETSU at 6 PM. The Mountaineers enter the game with a record of 21-19 overall and 11-9 in Sun Belt Conference play. The team is coming off a three-game conference series with JMU this past weekend, where they won the games on Friday and Sunday and lost the game on Saturday. The NBA playoffs continue tonight as games are beginning to shift into the Conference Semifinals. Recapping the action from last night, the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Boston Celtics, with James Harden finishing with 45 points for the Sixers and Jason Tatum finishing with 39 points for the Celtics. The second game of the night finished with the Denver Nuggets beating the Phoenix Suns. Nuggets center Nikola Jokic had a standout performance, finishing with 39 points and 16 rebounds in the game. Tonight's matchups will see the Miami Heat taking on the New York Knicks at 7:30 PM, and the Los Angeles Lakers taking on the Golden State Warriors at 10 PM. And finally in NFL news, Super Bowl 57 was just named the most watched U.S. television broadcast of all time according to recent ratings provided by Nielsen. According to ESPN, the data from Nielsen that was released today shows that the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs on February 12th brought in an average of 115 million viewers. This is almost two million more viewers than Nielsen's previous estimate of viewership for the well-known sporting event. In local news, the town of Boone unveiled a new historical marker February 3rd. According to the Watauga Democrat, the historical marker which is placed in downtown Boone was created to honor the area's first post office: Councill's Store. The marker was placed at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and West King Street across from the Jones House, and the marker has been planned since February 2022. In state news, over 70 sea turtles from a North Carolina aquarium have been released into the sea. According to CBS17, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island released exactly 72 turtles from their facility. The turtles were delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Fort Monroe and from there they were picked up so they could be released at sea. In national news, the 2023 Grammy Awards happened last night, and here are some of the notable highlights from the night. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny opened the show, and following his performance later in the night, App State's Luke Combs performed on the awards show's stage for the first time. Beyoncé broke the record for now owning the most Grammy awards, Harry Style won the award for best album of the year for his album “Harry's House”, Lizzo won record of the year, and Bonnie Raitt won song of the year, all according to the New York Times. In campus news, the Boone Town Council Cultural Advisory Board met on Monday to discuss upcoming community events. According to reports from The Appalachian, the CAB receives funding from private and local organizations for local art and cultural organizations. According to CAB member Linda Miller, the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines has helped attendance get back to where it was before the pandemic. Candice Cook, CAB's tourism marketing director, said Banner Elk, Beech Mountain and Blowing Rock will be bringing back their holiday events such as various lighting displays. Members at the meeting also discussed various upcoming renovation projects including the Jones House which received a new paint job for the first time in a decade. In national news, on Friday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge terminated Britney Spears' conservatorship after nearly 14 years. Spears took to social media to celebrate the termination of her conservatorship, saying it was the “best day ever.” Outside the courthouse, fans took to the streets to celebrate the occasion with some singing Spears' “Stronger.” According to Associated Press , the singer now has control over her own medical, financial and personal decisions for the first time since 2008. Fans continued their celebration on social media by trending the hashtag #FreedBritney, a change from the hashtag #FreeBritney which was used for years. In international news, Social media giants met with several world leaders at a summit on Thursday in Paris to issue a call to action for protecting children online. According to the Associated Press , the call was initiated by France and UNICEF which acknowledged that children may come across harmful content online such as cyberbullying, human trafficking, sexual and gender based violence, and more. President Macron addressed the issue adding that there needs to be more online regulation of content to prevent children from being able to access all content without rules. Social media companies have generally banned children under 13 years of age from joining their platforms, although it is widely documented that children sign up anyways with or without their parents permission. Carl and Angie bought the Looney Jones House in Columbia, Tennessee, a few years ago. It was in "horrible" shape, as you'll hear them admit in the interview. They were sure their friends and family were all thinking (but too polite to say), "What are you thinking?"They were thinking they were following a dream of owning a historic home. Angie had always wanted to live in an antebellum home. Being a general contractor (and married to one too), they didn't much care what shape it was in either. A little sweat equity didn't phase them any. As long as it had good bones, they were willing to invest elbow grease to restore it to its former grandeur. And that's what they've set about doing. Court talked with them about what it's like restoring a home while you live in it. But she also knew from a mutual friend who had connected her with Carl and Angie that they might also be residing with ghosts.Now, Carl will tell you he's aware of, but actively ignores, the rumors their new-to-them home is also haunted. He's the skeptic in the family who sets out to debunk any odd activity.Angie, on the other hand, is very open to the idea that some of the 185-year-old house's former occupants are still there. She shared a couple of experiences she's had as well as those her kids have related. (Seeing figures out of the corner of her eye, hearing footsteps, music, disembodied voices, etc.)Even if there are ghosts, they're not mean or malicious. Judging from the funny papers that fell out of the chimney (50 years on the exact same date!), the spirits of the Looney Jones house have a playful and good sense of humor. The other cool thing is Carl and Angie rent out the Looney Jones house for film and music video shoots. A couple of indie films have so far been shot there, as have a number of music videos, including even one by Luke Bryan! Court loved talking with Carl and Angie because their love for their house was infectious. Sure, they've had some setbacks in the restoration and other challenges, but they embrace it all and are grateful for all the excitement it's brought into their lives too. If you love old homes, this interview will help you appreciate all the hard work that goes into restoring them. Which is maybe why the ghosts aren't threatening. You give what you get and Angie and Carl only want to give this house decades, maybe even centuries, more life.
