HYC episode 030 is dedicated to the Manchester bomb attack victims and the CIty of Manchester. Manchester is my home, and I was deeply saddened in the wake of the attack at the Ariana Grande concert. As a member of the music community I wanted to reach out to the community to see if there was anything we could do in response. The result was a 226 track music compilation fundraiser for the victims and the Red Cross. It took a few weeks to put together (hence the reason there was a break in the weekly HYC schedule) however the Manchester with Love compilation is now available to purchase from our website (see below) It is 100% Manchester artists and affiliated artists and 100% of the proceeds go to the fund for the victims. This mix is just a sample of some of the music from the compilation, however there is about 17 hours of music in total and its available for £10 If you enjoy this mix then please support the compilation and help us share the music. For HYC episode 016 I have a guest mix from Tokyo's Wildest crew Hyperjuice. Hara & Fazerock formed in 2013 and have been taking their country by storm ever since with their imaginative take on underground music. Whether its Grime, Bassline, garage, dubstep or any other genre that takes their fancy, they have an ability to draw influence from these genres and create a completely unique sound from them. During their live sets Faze rock is just as likely to be jumping around to weighty bass sounds as he is whipping out a guitar and shredding over the top of it, and having seen them perform a few times I have been blown away with the energy and skill of their performances. Their guest mix mirrors that of their sound and takes in a number of genres and sounds but then presents it in a way that only Hyperjuice seem able to. Leading into this is the usual 15 minute mini mix from Jonny Dub featuring loads of brand new sounds and some older classic flavours.
Manchester based DJ & producer Hyphen steps in to the guest mix this week for episode 015 of the HYC mix series. This is not one for the faint hearted and is geared for the hard core party crew amongst us as his mix takes in everything from high energy drum & bass / jungle / grime / garage / hip hop plus a couple of slow jams in there as well. 2017 is looking like a big year for Hyphen with releases scheduled, gigs lined up and festivals booked in., so its great he's found the time to put together this mix for the show. Leading into this is 15 minutes of flavours provided by your host Jonny Dub, and this week he features new music from Stray, Om Unit & Sam Binga, HST, Sense Mc, Torai and more goodies to set the scene don't forget to head over to www.holdyourcorner.com for full track listings and a little q&a with Hypho twitter : @holdyourcorner facebook : holdyourcornermcr
Get lost in reverie where sparkling beats and mesmerising vocals lead into an abyss of sultry bass lines Rasty [Osaka | Japan] Michael Leung aka Rasty was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. A city renowned for it’s deep drum ‘n bass culture. Now based in Osaka, Japan, together with fellow Kiwi Tim Fieldes aka Big Ted formed the Nightbirds crew with an aim to revive the Drum & Bass scene and breathe new life into the city. Since starting, Nightbirds has brought through acts such as: Commix, The Upbeats, State of Mind, Om Unit, Swindle, Jonny Dub and Chimpo, with many more plans in the pipeline. Rasty’s sound is deep and intellectual, drawing influences from the likes of Calibre, dBridge and Skeptical, but you can also hear influences of footwork, grime and hip hop through his close work with other DJs and crews within the city. When it comes to his musical philosophy Rasty believes that ‘to have a heavy sound, you don’t necessarily need to play heavy tunes.’ He has become an integral part of the bass music scene in Osaka, hosting and playing at a range of parties across the city, from creating platforms to showcase local DJs, to supporting international artists.

London based producer, DJ and label head Throwing snow provides the guest mix for episode 013 of the HYC series. Moving further away from the club sounds of previous mixes this one is a journey through experimental sounds, ambient textures and sublime melodies. Having just released his latest full length Lp Embers on Houndstooth records earlier this week it is a real honour to have him provide a mix for the series and it really is an incredible mix, one to be given your full attention, ideally on a dark night, good headphones on and little to distract you from the musical journey he has put together leading into this is about 15 minutes of music mixed by Jonny Dub as ever as he tries to set the scene for the guest mix. This mix also features a World premier of a brand new song co-produced by Chimpo, Metrodome & Jonny Dub entitled "Your Name" which is forthcoming on DRS's "I Will EP due out on Soul:R next month.
For episode 012 I welcome a guest mix from a long time friend and collaborator Illum Sphere. For over a decade we have been DJ'ing and putting on parties together since our beginnings running small live art events in Manchester. Since those days we went on to set up Hoya:Hoya, a monthly club night and label that ran for over 7 years and held down residencies at Fabric as well as got to play all over the World from LA to festivals in Croatia together. A few years back Ryan (Illum Sphere) relocated to Berlin and has been busy working on his music which culminated in him releasing his 2nd lp Glass on Ninja Tune to much acclaim. This mix see's him showcase what an exceptional DJ & selector he is as he journeys through New Wave, Techno, Krautrock, Industrial, Disco, Digital Dancehall and lots more with a mix that will please the serious music heads as much as the casual listener. Leading into this is the usual mini mix from Jonny Dub setting the scene for the guest mix
Wishing everyone a happy new year as we welcome in 2017 and what better way then a guest mix from Tokyo's no1 sound system selectors Part2style Mal & Nisi P have been a major force on the Japanese underground scene for a number of years and have played a huge part in pushing UK underground music and sound system culture out in Japan. These guys are most known for playing Dancehall and Reggae, yet are also known to play a lot of Jungle, Dubstep, Grime and most things from across the UK underground scene. For this mix however Mal has focused on the sound of UK Garage and put together a firing mix filled with Garage classics as well s some newer bubblers. As ever Jonny Dub sets the show off and this time he's kept it along a similar vibe and put together a mini mix of Garage, Uk Funky and some tropical flavours.
For the final show of 2016 I have put together a number of tracks that I have enjoyed playing throughout 2016, along with a few tracks that I am looking forward to playing out in 2017. The mix is centred around underground house music but takes in elements of garage, grime and techno. Thanks for all the support since launching the series back in November and I look forward to bringing you plenty more great shows and guest mixes over the next year Safe
Episode 006 I welcome a guest mix from Manchester based producer & DJ Walton. Having been a fan of his music since his debut release "The Walton EP" on Hyperdub back in 2011, he has seemingly gone from strength to strength and grown considerably as an artist and producer since then. With some of the UK undergrounds most prestigious labels, including Hyperdub, Keysound, Kaizen & most recently Tectonic supporting and releasing his music, you can not argue that he is backed by some pedigree labels and producers. His mix explores a deeper side to Grime and UK Bass sounds, with elements of Dub Step, and techno in there as well. Leading into his mix as always is a mini mix from Jonny Dub featuring forthcoming music from Taiko, Dimness & DJ Madd, plus a few other choice tracks to set the tone.
THE FIRST MIX IN A BRAND NEW WEEKLY MIX SERIES! HOLD YOUR CORNER IS A WEEKLY MIX SERIES CURATED & PRESENTED BY JONNY DUB (HOYA:HOYA / LEVELZ / WAREHOUSE PROJECT) THE PURPOSE IS TO EXPLORE MANY AREAS OF THE UNDERGROUND BASS MUSIC SCENES FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND SHOWCASE SOME OF THE MOST CUTTING EDGE DJ'S, PRODUCERS, LABELS & PARTIES OUT THERE EACH WEEK. EXPECT TO HEAR SOME OF THE BEST MIXES AND SOUNDS COMING FROM ALL CORNERS OF THE GLOBE AND GET A SNAP SHOT INTO HOW OTHER COUNTRIES EMBRACE THE BASS MUSIC CULTURE AND CREATE THEIR OWN IDENTITY WITHIN IT
Many people claim to have eclectic tastes, but few carry through on their promises as ably as Illum Sphere. The Manchester man is as likely to drop a hip hop joint as he is freak you out with some wave or dub, make you move your ass with some boogie or pummel you into submission with some techno. It is the same story at his night, Hoya:Hoya, which has grown into one of his native city’s most acclaimed parties, with unbeatable residents like Jon K, Krystal Klear and Jonny Dub a key part of that. Given his magpie approach to playing records, it’s no wonder the same goes for Illum Sphere’s style when producing. He has put out his wares on 3024, Fat City, Young Turks and Tectonic, and is now a regular Ninja Tune artist with a brand new album one the way later this year. The mix, which is the first after his Fabriclive in November 2014, Illum Sphere serves up is typically atypical. Over the course of eighty minutes he takes you up, down and round and round through a hard to categorise world of sound. Atmosphere and texture are as important as beats and tempos, and it is hard to think of anyone as able to cover as much ground, with as much of a sense of cohesion, as this most fascinating musical man.

Fading into our existence for only a short time, slamming it down at Hoya Hoya in Manchester for Hallowe'en (together with Alphabet Zoo's Danny Breaks) with a live set, Agent J of Groovement shoots the ethereal shit with the don of the Afrikan Space Program, Brainfeeder's Ras G. Recorded November 2nd, 2009 @ Hoya Hoya towers, Manchester. Thanks to Jonny Dub and Illum Sphere. http://myspace.com/rasg
Well, well, well... a couple of weeks after joining us in the studio with Brackles, Daedelus returns to our humble Manchester studio with a special friend in tow in the form of the MotherFucking Gaslamp Killer. Jonny Dub of Hoya Hoya kicks us off with some typical Hoya fatness before Daedelus digs out his UK purchases and spins us some scratchy vinyl. Gaslamp drops some ill and upfront shit from his iPhone while Illum Sphere gets a late train in to finish us off. MONSTER of a show, and a direct result of Hoya KILLING it at the Warehouse Project the night before. The only way is up, gentlemen. Originally broadcast on www.UnityRadio.fm on Sunday 25th October 2009.
Thanks to the mans like Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub, Groovement landed these two LA hipsters in front of its microphone back in April: Gaslamp was playing fastbecominglegendary club night Hoya Hoya together with Sean Vinylment of Finders Keepers at the Roadhouse in Manchester, while FlyLo was visiting the Mint Lounge on a Monday night in an event put on by Hit n Run, Hoya Hoya and New Bohemia. A little warning: the FL interviews swerves into deep geek territory. If you’re averse to videogames and comics, turn away after the first twenty minutes…
Paul White's music is like the alphabet spaghetti of hip hop and Groovement was ecstatic to catch up with him and pick his brainzz when he dropped into Manchester, hitting on everything from badgers and UFOs to elaborate pillowcase packaging. Paul was spinning with Benji B at Hoya Hoya together with Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub - massive shout to the guys for sorting the hook up. Check out hoya hoya here including mix downloads... http://hoya-hoya.blogspot.com/ Paul White lives here: http://www.myspace.com/paulmw
A true gentleman, Daedeulus' intense stage presence belies a softly spoken and polite individual whose creativity oozes out of his very pores. The big D chats to Groovement the day before his set at Futuresonic in Manchester (which was preceded by an intimate secret gig at Common bar)at the Urbis Museum. We chat on about martial arts, UK influences, love and blips. A big thanks to Jonny Dub and Illum Sphere who set up the interview in their flat of stars. Playing underneath is Daedelus' set from hoya:hoya last year, downloadable here: http://www.groovement.co.uk/podcasts-2/daedelus-hoyahoya/
This was a seriously bizarre night... after watching the RZA MC with his DJ Kevvy Kev to launch Futuresonic, with around 25 people present, Rich Reason and Jonny Dub led the way for us all to catch the one and only Roots Manuva at the Mint Lounge. RZA and crew enjoyed the Mint Lounge veggie patties while the New Bohemia boys, who presented the night, sorted Groovement an interview with the man Rodney. Short but sweet, here'yare... Thanks to New Bohemia for sorting the interview, and having the passion to put on events in the first place - www.myspace.com/newbohemia Originally broadcast 4th May 2008. Runnning time: 18:59 Unity Radio supported Futuresonic 2008.
Hoya:Hoya played host to Marc Mac this month... this man is a legend, a pioneer and bloody nice. We find a quiet corner in Manchester's music box and chat sci fi, Visioneers, legacies and podomatic. PS to those that asked... he hasn't got started on Battlestar Galactica yet but has definitely heard good things. Big shout to Decoy, Ryan Hunn and Jonny Dub for sorting the interview!
