This week on the Toy Power Podcast, we have Matt Teale back, to join us for another fun episode. But first, Matt would like to promote his upcoming journey in the "Shitbox Rally". Which translated into driving through Australia, across some very formidable roads. Matt & co-driver Chris aka Darstardly & Muttley, will be embarking on this journey next year, and is looking for donations, in a campaign for the Cancer Council. (Link bellow.) Then we jump into our Main Topic, which is another Best-Of-Voting crusade; this time all based around the Toy Heroes released from the 70's & 80's. We each have 5 votes each, with rules of no double-ups and no calling out the same character each from a franchise. This is another great run-down and suprisingly diverse too. With an extra voter on the pannel this round, its not suprising we have a few double-ups, but thankfully we have some secondary fall back choices. Rounding out the ep, we run out of time for a proper Latest scores chat, but there is a suprise for Frank that he opens on air. Lee laughs weirdly and sets in motion a sprawling natter about cartoons and Penelope Pitstop, before together Simon and Lee drop into a) what it is to be disciplined and committed and b) taking family for granted. Some other details from the episode: Hanna Barbera cartoons, double feature films, staying awake in films, VHS and Betamax, TikTok and the ubiquity of culture, John Berry and timeless time, the scale and invisibility of the climate emergency, weathering the weather with movement artist Helen Poynor, colleague cousins, Woody Woodpecker, the Ant Hill Mob, Penelope Pitstop, Wacky Races (including Dastardly and Muttley), Susan dry retching through lack of content, Simon's brother Ian training as a cyclist, avoiding rain clouds in the Wairarapa, Ian riding into the back of a parked car, Lee being too easily distracted, Ian doing squats (actually they were leg presses), not having siblings and spending so much time alone, coming home in the dark (unsupervised), taking family for granted once we are grown up, Lee's cousins Neil and Mark, Northern idioms and accents, being social creatures, being in and out, teenagers constructing language, understanding family through distance, being excluded, and being a timid kid.--- Related links (and necessary corrections): Coming back to a TikTok: https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/you-are-you-we-live-here-this-isPenelope Pitstop running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxfFM9neB8MGet in touch with Lee and Simon at info@midlifing.net. ---The Midlifing logo is adapted from an original image by H.L.I.T: https://www.flickr.com/photos/29311691@N05/8571921679 (CC BY 2.0)
Like most kids back in the day, I loved Saturday morning cartoons. One of my favorites was a short-lived racing-themed show called Wacky Races. It only lasted one season, but like most cartoons of the day, it lived in repeats for many years. It's the place where we first saw Dick Dastardly and his mischievous dog Muttley. I was thinking back to that show recently as I headed to work. Many people flew past me that day, doing 70 or 80 miles per hour. Plus, we were all dodging the horrible potholes on Nashville roads. It was much like that old Wacky Races cartoon... Prepare yourselves for a cinematic gang bang as Peter brings us a Gang themed week. We've scoured the depths of the criminal underworld to bring you the top 5 gangs to grace the silver screen. 2019 Mexican drama I'M NO LONGER HERE tells the story of Ulises, the leader of a Cholombiano street gang in Monterrey, Mexico, who's forced to relocate to New York after accidentally becoming involved in a dispute with a local cartel. You guys probably knew already that Cholombiano culture involved flamboyant fashion and listening to slowed down Cumbian folk music but this was all new to me. Full of accordions, vibrant colours and contrastingly muted tones, we spend a good chunk of the review describing the main characters haircut, because it turns out to be thematically relevant as well as quite a remarkable sight. Peter claims to have watched this movie more than a hundred times or something but I'm not so sure and when Sidey describes this as Spanish PATERSON that resonated with me as it captures the vibe of this slow and thoughtful meditation on identity, alienation, immigration and artistic expression. We finish things up with a look back at WACKY RACES and if that gets your nostalgia vein throbbing I'm afraid it's time to get flaccid again because this was awful and the races were obviously fixed. On the plus side Peter Perfect's car is essentially a motorised dildo. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads
One of the reasons for looking back to pre-rock'n'roll in this series was to learn more about the styles, trends and back-stories that shaped the music of the punk rock movement and beyond. I've mentioned before that there's clearly never an alignment to musical styles starting or ending with how the calendar falls. But there was almost a dividing line in the middle of 1968 that signified the end of what I think of as “60s music” and what feels like the 1970s. You hear commentators talk of the “end of an era” and the “end of innocence”. But there is a sense of weariness, cynicism and down-right anger as we bear witness to the death throes of the 1960s. The big news story is the moon landing and is something, as a 3-year old I do vaguely remember being woken up for. There's little in the way of music or other current events I recall. But we're starting to hear TV that was a large point of my childhood. Listen out for Mary, Mungo and Midge, Scooby Doo, Pot Black, The Clangers, Ask The Family, Chigley, and Dastardly and Muttley.

Hey kids! It's a fresh syndicated start that'll warm anyone's heart! Well, at least it'll make it laugh. Yogi's Treasure Hunt was a key part of the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera block of shows, bringing the first generation of funny animal characters back to form and returning Dastardly and Muttley to the company after a rights dispute. It started modestly, but ended with some of the most unusual parody work the company would ever do. X marks the funtastic spot in this episode, so come on and join us!
Let's start with a shout-out to all those Purples who have offered up Limericks & Rhymes following the ‘capillary' episode last week. The standard, overall, was most impressive, definitely a notch up from anything that could be described as 'enthusiastic' or (even worse) 'proficient'.However the recognition by name must go to Kester Roper, who provided a belter of a limerick that I, being a bit of a pedant, modified (slightly). Our joint effort therefore runs thus; There was a young lady called Hilary Who toured a Jamaican distillery She stuck her bare bum In a vat of dark rum And now has a burning capillaryHats off to you Kester. Hello, how you doin'? This episode starts off with a reveal of note, as we discuss how our wives would upgrade us if they could. We finally bring you some MCU news and discuss the correct pronounciation of a name when an up-comma is involved. Ross wonderfully explains to us what a JFK is (it involves shots but not shots at the bar). We also realise that Jimmy Fallon is basically Muttley and should not be allowed to do serious interviews. There's an update on the Rust shooting incident and discussions are had about whether Tom Holland should be cast as Peter Pan and Pinocchio. Actors have got to start learning from Jennifer Lawrence and Jody has to concede that Ross was right (damnit). We figure out why humanoid robots are being made getting ready to take over the world guys. We plant a couple of earworms deep in your earholes and we remind you about who Michael is. Ross pulls a Jody (typical) and he reminds us about his hatred for musicals. We decide to do an episode on who the best Chris is and remind you that America's penis is out in the world. Truly Inconsequential - Not all characters are created equal. Mr. Greer and Brimstone of The Grindhouse Radio debate this week's zeroes in front of a live audience. It'll be determined in real time who will remain inconsequential, and who may be liberated back into the hero's category. This week they argue Sprocket from Fraggle Rock; as well as Muttley from Wacky Games. Good ole' Sprocket may see and hear Muttley causing mischief; but will anyone actually pay attention to him. Question is, who will remain truly inconsequential.

Anyone want to join Amy on that one? Anyone? Yeah didn't think so. May is Mental Health Awareness month so we thought this would be a great time to re-introduce ourselves and our mental health journeys of when and how we were diagnosed. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll reach for the Xanax. Check out the National Alliance On Mental Illness for resources, help, or donations.
