There's more to Jay Carder than just one genre. "A typical Jay Carder club set infuses raw, tribal rhythms with house, breaks and electronica in low-end-heavy DJ sets. Throwing parties for the underground dance community, she's as much at home warming up for Bicep as she is playing alongside a hero like K-Lone. Her unique connection to the dance floor is key to her energy and ethos, but there's more to mention. From Fela to Bonobo, her wide-ranging influences are rooted in music with soul, groove and depth. Ask her to name a list of her favourite artists and a list come back as long as her right arm: Overmono, David August, Max Cooper, Throwing Snow, Funkadelic and LTJ Bukem all come tumbling down her proverbial sleeve. Shake it again and Sault, Slugabed, J Dilla and Nina Simone then artistically emerge: she's the very definition of an eclectic selection. "I thought I'd go somewhere I've never been before for this mix – to analogue heaven with purely vinyl selections. Normally I'm a quick mixer, a looper, a 3-CDJ tune tickler – so thought I'd switch things up and dust off some acetate for this one. The result is tracks that are long, deep and 100% considered for their positioning and sonic pleasure. There's even a few lairy (and hairy!) bits that will keep you (as they sure did me) on your toes. Some of these records I bought years ago before I could even DJ; some of them I bought last week. All of them I hope give you a tasty little flavour of Jay Carder. Cheers to Slothboogie for having me!" Artist: @jaycarder

The penultimate episode of series 2 is with the wonderful Hannah Cartwright from the band Snow Ghosts (amongst many other creative projects that we discuss). She invited me to come to her studio (castle) near Bath and have a chat about her life in music and being a composer, being in bands and writing music for media. I had met Hannah the first time when she was part of the team at production music house ‘Extreme Music’ who we talk about a bit in the episode as well. Really enjoyed this conversation and the massive cups of teas I was made. Would love to get her back on to talk more about the creative processes so watch this space for that. Australian singer Penelope Trappes came into her own on Penelope One, her debut solo album released via Optimo back in summer of 2017. She followed it up with her sophomore release Penelope Two at the end of last year, this time making a home on fabric's inhouse label Houndstooth. Musically both albums signalled a shift away from the dancefloor-focused productions she'd become known for as one half of The Golden Filter; think minimal soundscapes, distant echoing vocals and sparse atmospheric textures wrought with emotion. June saw the release of Redeux, her second LP on Houndstooth, which saw her invite several producers to rework the original tracks first heard on Penelope Two. Amongst those tasked with creating their own reimaginations were Cosey Fanny Tutti, Mogwai, Throwing Snow and Aasthma, the collaborative project of Peder Mannerfelt and Par Grindvik. For your listening pleasure she provides an immersive mix of cinematic sounds and textures to see you through hump day, including several of the reworks from Redeux...

Matt is a British composer who has emerged with a flourish over the last few years, describing his music as "Classical Dream Pop" he has been critically praised for his musical integrity and output which has most recently seen him release an album on Injazero. The label has acted as a safe haven for those which dabble between the abstract, the experimental, electronic and classical music - it makes a perfect fit for the singular and wide ranging approach Matt Emery has applied to his musical expression. There is an element of intrigue as to what might come next for the up and coming musician but we feel excited by the prospect of a new avenue... As a result we invited him to contribute to our Monday mix series, an ambient focussed affair. He picks music by the likes of Throwing Snow, Jon Hopkins, Max Cooper and even delivers an exclusive rendition of one of his own tracks.
This week we have a stunning selection of leftfield electronic music. Not only is there a new record from Aphex Twin, but stunning Mexican electronics from IntiNahual and the brilliant new record from Brandt Brauer Frick's Daniel Brandt. We also have Anna Meredith's rework of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons, a collaboration between Throwing Snow and Wil Plowman under the Swaabi Maa moniker to celebrate the birthday of their A Future Without Records, and lots of good music from Portugal, Niger and beyond.

London based producer, DJ and label head Throwing snow provides the guest mix for episode 013 of the HYC series. Moving further away from the club sounds of previous mixes this one is a journey through experimental sounds, ambient textures and sublime melodies. Having just released his latest full length Lp Embers on Houndstooth records earlier this week it is a real honour to have him provide a mix for the series and it really is an incredible mix, one to be given your full attention, ideally on a dark night, good headphones on and little to distract you from the musical journey he has put together leading into this is about 15 minutes of music mixed by Jonny Dub as ever as he tries to set the scene for the guest mix. This mix also features a World premier of a brand new song co-produced by Chimpo, Metrodome & Jonny Dub entitled "Your Name" which is forthcoming on DRS's "I Will EP due out on Soul:R next month.
After heavy rock of last week, this week sees more in the way of electronic music. All kicking off with the exceptional sounds of Jay Glass Dubs - one of the leaders of the current crop of exciting experimental dancehall artists doing the rounds. Elsewhere, there's a new record to raise money for nightclub Fabric's legal battle here in the UK, the latest compilation of Gqom music from South Africa, and loads more.
