NFT, blockchain, crypto…
In this episode, Jamie Burke is joined by Ambre Soubiran, founder of Kaiko, a cryptocurrency market data provider for institutional investors and enterprises. Kaiko aims to be the foundation of the new digital finance economy by serving as a single source for market information. Jamie and Ambre discuss the crypto winter, being a serial founder, publically available data, moving from crypto native customers to traditional hedge funds, banks and institutions, understanding what digital currency markets mean for retail investors, and more.
The world of cryptocurrency continues to grow in popularity. With Bitcoin regularly hitting the headlines, an increasing number of people are curious about investing in crypto. But what is it, what are its origins, and how does it work? Ambre Soubiran is the CEO of Kaiko - a crypto market data company.

EPISODE OVERVIEW: Kaiko was founded in 2014 and is now a market data provider in the blockchain-based digital assets space, providing institutional investors and market participants with enterprise-grade data infrastructure. In this episode, Ambre talks through the intersection and merging of Kaiko’s story with her personal story – see below for some of the best soundbites: On her entry point to the crypto and blockchain space: “In 2012, for me it was a refreshing new venture, I was going to these really random bitcoin meetups in these underground venues on Brick Lane in London, it was really sketchy at the time, but in a good way. It was really smart people that were inspired and changing the world and doing so in a technological and mathematical way that were really close to my heart.” On thinking about crypto differently: “Bitcoin is very often perceived as a “crypto-anarchist revolutionary-against-institutions” mindset, which is indeed the genesis of it, but not everyone is like that, and I think it was more about challenging the status quo and re-thinking the notions of money, and that’s what I really liked about those meetups. On dispelling market rhetoric: Banks definitely don't ignore blockchain anymore, but I was trying to push it at a time when they weren't ready for it yet. But the “blockchain-good-crypto-bad” mindset frustrates me a little bit, because what makes a blockchain work are the consensus and incentivization mechanism. If you don’t have a unit of value, i.e., a cryptocurrency or token, that incentivizes people to maintain the network in a decentralised way tied to a blockchain, you're missing out on the main points of what makes a blockchain work. On knowing your target investors: If you’re a founder in the blockchain or crypto space, and you have to spend the first 15 minutes of a 30-minute pitch to a VC explaining blockchain and crypto, you’re in the wrong meeting. On the capital markets: The capital markets industry is definitely less creative than it used to be, and that’s one of the things that drove me to crypto is that there’s still so much room to build. Bio-tech is messy because life is complicated. A lot of attention is given to computers sequencing genomes, but some of the most advanced and important work is done by studying and using other living things to make our own lives better. Kenta Yamato co-founded Kaico to commercialize a technique that uses silkworms to manufacture small-batch custom proteins. And Kico is involved with everything from veterinary medicine to Japan's search for a coronavirus vaccine. We also talk about the challenges or creating startups based on university technology and the one e-commerce model in Japan that just won't go away. I think you'll enjoy the conversation. Show Notes How to get proteins from a silkworm (It's not fun for the silkworm) Why silkworms, in particular, must be used The importance and uses of small-batch, custom proteins The start of a silkworm startup The most common (and least successful) Japanese e-commerce model Why it's so hard for Japanese universities to spin-out startups How Kaico silkworms are part of the fight against covid-19 How to scale a silkworm startup Links from the Founder Everything you ever wanted to know about Kaico Friend Kenta on Facebook Connect with him on LinkedIn A Kaico video explainer Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan's most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. Today, we're going to be talking about worms. No, no, wait, don't go, I promise this is going to be really interesting. Today, we're going to sit down and talk with Kenta Yamato of Kaico, a Kyushu-based startup that is using silkworms to rapidly produce custom small-batch innovative proteins that are used for bio-research, medicine, and they play a part in Japan's search for coronavirus vaccine. It's a fascinating process but admittedly one that's not particularly fun for the silkworms themselves. We also talk about the most popular and most unsuccessful e-commerce business model in Japan, the challenges Japanese universities in spinning out startups, and we even cover some practical solutions to that problem. But you know, Kenta tells that story much better than I can, so let's get right to the interview. Interview Tim: So I'm sitting here with Kenta Yamato of Kaico, a company that uses silkworm to produce specific protein used in medical tests and vaccine, and thank you for sitting down with me. Kenta: Yes, thank you for me and I have a very pleasure to explain our company's story. Yeah, thank you very much. Tim: It's great to have you on the show. I tried to explain very briefly what Kaico does, but I think you can explain it a lot better than I can, so at like a high level, what does Kaico do? Kenta: We started Kaico two years ago in 2018. Kaiko means silkworm in English. Maybe you know silkworm can make silk for clothes, but we will use this kaiko silkworm for making proteins. We are a startup company from Kyushu University and our products are many proteins, the protein the other companies cannot make because it is difficult to make it. We make this protein by silkworm. Tim: So if I understand the basic process, you inject the silkworm with a virus containing the target gene, and then it makes the proteins as part of its silk, and then you extract the proteins from the silk? Kenta: No, no. First, we'll incorporate the gene of target protein into baculovirus, so this baculovirus is safe for us humans and animals, but baculovirus damage to only silkworms and we will insert this recombinant baculovirus into silkworm and their body can make the specific protein in their cell, and finally, we'll collect and purify the body liquid from the silkworm. Tim: Okay, so it's not from the silk, it's from the silkworms themselves that you extract the proteins. Kenta: Yes, we don't use silk. Tim: Okay. So why silkworm? Is there something about silkworms that makes it easy to generate protein...

The department now has 59 women out of 1,042 firefighters, a 5.6% rate that exceeds the national average, which is typically from 3% to 3.5%, said Capt. Greg Pixley, the department’s officer in charge of recruiting and outreach.Cassie and Taylor said they hoped their recent swearing in to the firefighting family would encourage other girls, and women, to pursue the career.
Colin is nowhere to be seen today, but luckily Simon is joined by Blockchain Insider favourite Sarah Feenan! First up, JPMorgan says the bitcoin price has jumped beyond its intrinsic value! JPMorgan seems to previously have treated bitcoin as a commodity and priced it calculating its cost of production. Sarah remarks it is interesting that JPMorgan treated it like a commodity, as there have been attempts to value cryptocurrencies over the years, and treating it as a commodity is not a way known to her. Simon describes bitcoin as gold with a teleporter, it's not always accepted as a form of payment, but it is clearly a valuable object. (02.02) Next up, ABN AMRO eyes launch of blockchain inventory platform and are said to be dropping their bitcoin wallet plan. The new platform is for trade inventory and is called Forcefield. It is designed to provide a real-time view of bitcoin trade inventories. Sarah points out that unfortunately, ABN keeps getting reminded of their bitcoin plan each time they release a new product but that idea was, in fact, dropped years ago! Simon wonders about the product side of this. What is the interface going to look like? Will it solve problems people actually have? (07.10) We also have a great Tweet of the Week from @60 minutes, about how a mans want for pizza cost him hundreds of millions of dollars! Oh dear. This week is our six-month anniversary! To celebrate, we'll learn about some of the creatures that live at the bottom of the Mariana Trench's deepest section, Challenger Deep, as well as other animals who live in deep caves on land. We also learn what I will and will not do for a million dollars (hint: I will not implode in a bathysphere). A xenophyophore IN THE GRIP OF A ROBOT A snailfish from five miles down in the Mariana trench: The Hades centipede. It's not as big as it looks, honest. The tiny but marvelous olm. Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. For this week’s episode, we’re going to find out what lives in the deepest, darkest places of the earth—places humans have barely glimpsed. We’re not just talking deep sea, we’re talking the abyssal depths. Like onions and parfaits, the earth is made up of many layers. The core of the earth is a ball of nickel and iron surrounded by more nickel and iron. The outer core is molten metal, but the inner core, even though it’s even hotter than the outer core—as hot as the surface of the sun—has gone through the other side of liquid and is solid again. Surrounding the core, the earth’s mantle is a thick layer of rocks and minerals some 1900 miles deep, and on top of that is the crust of the earth, which doesn’t actually sound very appealing but that’s where we live and we know it’s really pretty, with trees and oceans and stuff on top of it. The upper part of the mantle is broken up into tectonic plates, which move around very slowly as the molten metals and rocks beneath them swirl around and get pushed up through cracks in the mantle. Under the oceans, the crust of the earth is only around 3 miles thick. And in a few places, there are crevices that actually break entirely through the crust into the mantle below. The deepest crack in the sea floor is the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific. At its deepest part, a narrow valley called Challenger Deep, the crack extends seven miles into the earth. The pressure at that depth is immense, over 1,000 times that at sea level. Animals down there can’t have calcium carbonate shells because the pressure dissolves the mineral. It’s almost completely dark except for bioluminescent animals, and the water is very cold, just above freezing. The trench is crescent shaped and sits roughly between Japan to the north and Papua New Guinea to the south, and the Philippines to the west. It’s caused by the huge Pacific plate, which is pushing its way underneath the smaller Mariana plate, a process called subduction. But near that activity, another small plate, the Caroline plate, is subducting beneath the Pacific plate. Subduction around the edges of the Pacific plate is the source of the earthquakes, tsunamis, and active volcanos known as the Ring of Fire. Some researchers think there’s a more complicated reason for Mariana Trench and other especially deep trenches nearby, though. There seems to be a tear in the Caroline plate, which is deforming the Pacific Plate above it. Challenger Deep is such a deep part of the ocean that we’ve barely seen any of it. The first expedition that got all the way down was in 1960, when the bathyscape Trieste reached the bottom of Challenger Deep. This wasn’t an unmanned probe, either. There were two guys in that thing, Jacque Piccard and Don Walsh, almost ten years before the moon landing, on a trip that was nearly as dangerous. They could see out through one tiny thick window with a light outside. The trip down took almost five hours, and when they were nearly at the bottom, one of the outer window panes cracked. They stayed on the bottom only about 20 minutes before releasing the weights and rising back to the surface. The next expedition didn’t take place until 1995 and it was unmanned. The Kaiko could collect samples as well as record what was around it, and it made repeated descents into Challenger Deep until it was...

CONSPIRACY! CONTROVERSY! A wage-fixing cartel was exposed in Silicon Valley with top animation studios at the center, so we discuss it... as best we can. Or as best as Stephen can explain it to Rob and Pat. We also talk Emmy noms, a new animation program, Andrew Kaiko's new fanimation using Toon Boom Animate, and Pat created a character! This week's episode is a special 20min interview with animator Andrew Kaiko about his process of creating a short, inspiration, ideas on style, and of course his brand new short "Norm & Cory!" He has a great traditional style and a wonderful sense for color (which we also discuss in the interview) as you can see in his short ON VIMEO. I encourage all of you to watch it first. Andrew was also kind enough to provide some images to share as reference to the topics we discuss which you can also see below matched with a time-stamp indicating the relevant moment in the podcast. Let him know how much you like his work on twitter, on his video, or on the blog in the comments! Thank you, Andrew, it was a pleasure talking animation with you! This episode we preview the interview I had with Andrew Kaiko about his new animated short "Norm & Cory", as well as a guessing game, a discussion about about sexy Disney men and a rundown of the major animation stories of the week! Rob & I have been working on our "secret" project (which we announce on the podcast) as well as two separate animated shorts which come out this week... but that also means we're tired. Very tired. So a fun drinking game to play in this podcast would be whenever someone makes a gigantic, embarrassing mistake while trying to say something relevant... drink! Sidenote, I'll be gone next week but the conversation continues on twitter and facebook under the hashtag #PatRyan2016 ... come up with some good campaign slogan for our crazy co-host. The best ones will get read on the next podcast! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment!
