Riz Maslen who performs under the moniker Neotropic, is an electronic musician and composer based in the UK. She began releasing records in the mid nineties, and has been highly prolific over the last 2 decades having put out many albums and eps on various labels including Ninja Tune and 4Hero. In this interview, we touch on how she developed her own style through experimentation and a DIY ethos, her early days at Ninja Tune and her touring experiences in the heyday of electronic music in the nineties. We also got into discussion around the challenges of working outside of your comfort zone, the connotations of being pigeonholed as a female vocalist in electronic music, and discovered some correlations between both of our experiences of making electronic music. Since the late '50s Mark Murphy has been a stalwart of the crooner set. A jazz singer with an exquisite style that pushed the edges and split the critics, making him a real musician's musician. A contemporary of the Rat Pack and the rock opera with an affinity for the Beats and be-bop, Murphy defied category–freeform vocalese with a rich timbre that let forth expressive colors that were alluring, audacious, and even shocking. Despite multiple Grammy nods, he was largely relegated to the fringes. Then came the '80s, Gilles Peterson, the Acid Jazz movement, electronica, London, Japan, Scandinavia, Asia, Europe, the 21st Century and beyond, literally. With new musical freedoms Murphy took the vocal arts light years ahead. We welcome back Gilles Peterson, who was instrumental in this phase of the singer's life and career, to share his experiences and shed light on the music that bookended this extraordinary artist's legacy. Featuring collaborations with 4Hero, United Future Organization, the Five Corners Quintet, and more. ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. ABOUT KYLE EAGLE (Host): Kyle Eagle has been a contributing writer and producer for the NPR-WBGO, WUCF, WPRK, Wax Poetics, The Orlando Weekly, Artbourne, and The Fiscal Times, as well as several music and film releases- Light in the Attic's documentary "This Is Gary McFarland", and an upcoming film on composer Jack Nietzsche. Recordings- Call Me-Jack Wilson, Live at the Penthouse, Grachan Moncur III, Chico Hamilton, and Andy Bey. ABOUT CHRIS BARANYI (Producer): Chris Baranyi is a sound engineer and music producer. Raphael Saadiq is a well schooled soul composer. As much as he's an auteur, he's a curator whose vision is culled from the classics, with ears and eyes focused on the way ahead. In a class of groove savants like Prince, Erykah Badu, and Bilal, Saadiq's stamp on Neo-Soul is bold, brilliant, beautiful, and touching–like his latest, Jimmy Lee. He chimes in with us to discuss the Jimmy Lee we all know and are.   "What is Neo-Soul?" someone asked us recently. That's a show in itself, more like one of those epics with an intermission. For the sake of time we rattled off a few choice cuts from this conscience driven fusion of funk, electronica, jazz, Afro beat and the proverbial kitchen sink. On cue: Freestyle Fellowship, 4Hero, Mos Def, Hiatus Kaiyote, Bilal, J Dilla, Spacek, Viktor Duplaix, plus plus plus.  ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! We are back with a Monday refresher for you: similar to the Old Fashioned, the Cooper Union is a blend of smooth, bright Whiskey, elderflower and orange bitters. And Lee Jones fantastic interpretation comes with only the best and smoothest tunes! For nearly 20 years, Lee, originally from Essex (UK), has regularly played in the clubs of his adopted home of Berlin, such as KaterBlau, Sisyphos and Watergate, and throughout the world in over 30 countries. As a producer he has been through many changes. After his successful downtempo beginnings as Hefner, remixing the likes of 4Hero, Cinematic Orchestra, Fink and Lamb, he quickened the tempo as MyMy with Berghain resident Nick Höppner on labels such as Ostgut Ton, Playhouse and Cocoon. In a next step he refined his cinematic, jazz infused sound with releases as Lee Jones on Cityfox, Watergate Records and Aus Music. Soul/Jazz Folk singer and guitarist Terry Callier, passed away last week (October 27, 2012) aged 67 after suffering from throat cancer. Terry released a string of enduring and influential albums between the early 60's and the late 80's and enjoyed a creative rebirth during the late 90’s in the UK when his Folk, Soulful music was revived by the acid-jazz movement, and great new albums via Talkin Loud Records and Mr Bongos. Terry's more modern collaborators included Beth Orton, Massive Attack, 4hero, Incognito, Paul Weller and Nujabes. It wasn't just the distinct voice and guitar playing that made Terry so special in his early era but his sometimes radical out-there songwriting skills were picked up by the likes of The Dells, Jerry Butler, Dee Sharp Gamble and The Rotary Connection. Credit also goes to Terry for Spotting Minnie Riperton as she worked as a receptionist at Chess Cadet Records (so the story goes). Some of my personal favorites from Terry is his work with arrangers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans at Cadet records. Enjoy the selection. Rest In Power Terry Callier. Marc Mac

The Soul Arranger (part eight) - H.B. Barnum.Ok here's the lowdown, I hope you enjoy this latest instalment.Producer and arranger H.B. Barnum remains one of the unsung giants of popular music, collaborating with a who's who of acts spanning from Frank Sinatra to Puff Daddy. Legendary music producer and arranger H. B. Barnum, a man who has worked with an extraordinary cross-spectrum of performers, was born Hidle Brown Barnum, Jr. on July 15, 1936 in Houston, Texas. At age four, he won a nationwide talent contest for his singing and piano playing, which launched a film and radio career that included appearances on Amos ‘n’ Andy and The Jack Benny Program. Barnum recorded his first solo album at the age of fourteen as Pee Wee Barnum. He attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, California. In 1960 Barnum scored a Top 40 pop hit of his own with the instrumental "Lost Love," signing to RCA later that year to release his debut LP, The Big Voice of Barnum -- H.B., That Is. Everybody Loves H.B. -- Barnum, That Is trailed in 1961, and while a handful of solo records followed, his performing career gradually took a backseat to his work as a studio arranger and producer. Upon joining Capitol Records in 1965 Barnum's reputation flourished. Often he worked in collaboration with producer and longtime friend David Axelrod, and together they forged an innovative orchestral jazz-funk sensibility much copied and sampled in the decades to come. Barnum's list of studio credits is remarkably long and distinguished, including sessions with Sinatra, Count Basie, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, and the Supremes. But for me it was the less know collaborations with the likes of Spanky, Greg Perry and his involvement with the Motown great Holland Dozier Holland. By the mid-'70s Barnum shifted his focus from pop music to television, scoring countless series and specials in addition to composing myriad advertising jingles.career gradually took a backseat to his work as a studio arranger and producer. Ok Chill... kicking off 2012 with a trip to the library. A little mix dedicated to the many great library labels, musicians and composers; Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield, Alan Parker, Sammy Burdson, De Wolfe, KPM, Sylvester, Conroy Music to name a few. There's 1000's of good lib records worldwide but I would probably have to say that my faves came from London in the 60's & 70's and I think it has a lot to do with the cool production studios in the UK during that time. Funny, as a kid watching UK tv in the 70's & 80's funky grooves always popped on programs even the news & sports programs, I'm pretty sure the musicians would have listened to whatever was cool in the US at the time (Stevie, Herbie and Quincy Jones) then vibed off the influence. Of course library music has become a big and important part of Hip-hop and Beatmaking with producers and DJ's parting with plenty cash and traveling far and wide for a dope track, drum break or sample buried in tons of cheesy wackness. anyway hope you dig. Wade arranged and produced for many great artist from Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross through to Grant Green and Marlena Shaw. Wade also spent time at two of the most important labels of the 60‘s and 70‘s; Motown and Blue Note. What I find fascinating with Wade is his ability to adapt his style and sound depending on the artist he was arranging for so there isn’t a Wade stamp or sound... its just a great sound and his arrangements tend go beyond Strings and Horns. It’s so easy to forget about these musicians and not give them the props there so rightly deserve in fact it's pretty near impossible to find a photo of Wade on the internet. Hoya:Hoya played host to Marc Mac this month... this man is a legend, a pioneer and bloody nice. We find a quiet corner in Manchester's music box and chat sci fi, Visioneers, legacies and podomatic. PS to those that asked... he hasn't got started on Battlestar Galactica yet but has definitely heard good things. Big shout to Decoy, Ryan Hunn and Jonny Dub for sorting the interview!
