What makes the Exchange so special? It's the fact that we are building a community where entrepreneurs and business owners have a safe place to feel vulnerable. That's why our first even kicked off by talking about imposter syndrome. It's something every business owner faces. Sometimes, we aren't even conscious of it. But that's why events like the one we hosted in collaboration with Joy Drop is so important. Shashi Behl, founder of Joydrop, along with all of the other business owners in the room, came to the table with experience and openness that reminded me why the entrepreneur community is so significant. Check out this vlog and get to know what the event was about, what we did and what our takeaways were! We hope to see you at the next one. — Thanks for watching! What words do you HATE when people talk about entrepreneurs and business owners? Shashi Behl, Founder and CEO of Joydrop and I had a great conversation about this. Never use the following words when talking to Shashi: - pivot (we always have to be adapting) - entrepreneurship (can you please define it) - balance (it's bullshit. It's prioritizing) - hustle (work hard? Why hustle?) - BOSS BABE Being a business owner is really hard. Sometimes we have to recognize the things we don't like because when we ignore them, they build up. That's why it's important to talk to business owners like yourself who understand the struggles and stresses you're facing. When you've started a business (or multiple), sold a business, and started another one with even more success than the first, it's safe to say you know your shit. Shashi Behl, CEO/Founder of JoyDrop has refined the art of building businesses to sell. Why though? Why build a business and put your heart and soul into it with the intention of selling to someone else? Because passion isn't embedded in making money or selling the most necklaces. “My job in the world is to get to a point where we don't have to say female entrepreneur and we just say you are an entrepreneur.” - Shashi Behl Another panel of strong, successful business owners! I specifically asked for an all female entrepreneurs panel because let's face it, when creating my business, although I faced challenges, they were different challenges from what women face. So we invited Jenn Lofgren, Founder of Incito Executive and Leadership Development, Amanda Ovaici, Co-founder of Cafe Alchemist and YYC FuckUp Nights, and Shashi Behl, Founder and Owner of Joydrop. But what I found incredibly interesting about this panel is although each of them did not shy away from the struggles they faced, they didn't dwell on it. Their goal is to build a future where any young entrepreneur of any gender, race, etc., can think to themselves “I'm going to start a business.” We discuss why the traits that made them “bad” employees make them incredible employers, the most ridiculous things people have said to them, and how they run their business with grace and strength, even through all the bullshit. It's possible you know her as front-woman for Canadian rock band Joydrop, from morning television or Rogers Hometown Hockey. My next guest is actor-turned-rockstar-turned-broadcaster, Tara Slone! Most people are lucky to have one successful career, let alone two or three. Jeez. Tara was also a finalist on the hit CBS series Rockstar: INXS. She has a lengthy acting resume, too. When looking for the next step in her career, Tara jumped at the opportunity to work at a small TV station in Toronto, and it became clear that making the leap from interviewee to interviewer gave Slone a unique perspective with her subjects. Tara's next stop was as the host of Breakfast Television Calgary, where she spent five years. It was there that was given the opportunity to work in the world of sports, acting as a regular contributor to Sportsnet, covering the WHL and USports hockey, curling, soccer, and bobsleigh.  For 8 years, Slone co-hosted Rogers Hometown Hockey alongside Ron MacLean, and helmed the weekly Sportsnet series Top of [HER] Game in 2020 and 2021, focussing on stories of empowered women in the world of sports. Tara is also a Canadian Screen Award nominee for her work on the CityTV music program Budweiser Stage at Home. Find Tara on Instagram or Twitter and re-live some of her Sportsnet moments HERE. They are simple things that mean everything.  A passionate entrepreneur and strong advocate for women in business, Shashi has founded and partnered with various women lead businesses before opening the doors of Joydrop. When she's not sourcing the world for the best products and stories, Shashi enjoys travelling with her family, road biking, practicing yoga, reading and hearing about other peoples' stories.   About MichaelMichael is the Founder & President of M.E. Since those music days Tara has reinvented herself as a TV Host but her journey to become an acclaimed broadcaster on "Rogers Hometown Hockey" and "Top of HER Game" was not an easy one, and has taught her the importance of being kind to ourselves. Tara's background is in music, having fronted the rock band "Joydrop" and as a contestant on “Rock Star : INXS”, before pivoting into broadcast. We've got another week where Terry & Mike start things off and Chuck comes by to finish up. The part that's different though is that Mike & TR spend the first bit of the show actually talking about hockey as they discuss some interesting stories from the first week of the season including Milan Lucic's job with the Flames and Jack Edwards' ability to piss off Roman Polak's agent. But not to fear, they somehow wind up talking about movie popcorn and Neil Sedaka before we get to the guest.  Tara Slone joins us to talk about training to be an opera singer before acting in B horror movies and leading Joydrop, about her solo records and Breakfast Television, and how that all lead her to her current gig co-hosting Rogers Hometown Hockey with friend of the show Ron MacLean and what she's looking forward to about the upcoming season - which will bring her out our way in a couple weeks. Then TR and Chuck tag out and Mike and Chuck talk about some of the same stuff, but there's more bickering about it than earlier.
