Today I have a total treat for you in that you'll get to meet one of my favorite podcasters, Michele Olender, vegan life coach and host of the Vedge your Best Podcast. You know me and the way I talk about veganism, I meet people where they're at, I respect the journey and timing of each person, I understand and have empathy for the fact that this change happens differently for different people. I'm not a proponent of adding shame, blame or guilt, or the idea of reaching perfection when you're on this journey to eating more plants and living vegan. I'm telling you all this because although I listen to a ton of podcasts, I don't listen to a lot of vegan podcasts. It's a short list of timeless shows from advocates who I feel talk about these issues in a way that is actually practical, joyful, doable and fun, without excessive fear mongering and like you're talking to a knowledgeable friend. All this to say that Michele's podcast is all about the motivation, all about the inspiration, she has the best voice in the podcasting universe, so soothing that listening to her is like meditating. Most importantly, she talks about these issues and making the transition to veganism in a way that is truly inspiring and refreshing. In today's conversation we talk about her own journey into this lifestyle and why being an advocate for her daughter started a path of her own that transformed her life (we wouldn't have her incredible podcast without it!). We talk about life stages and going vegan later in life, aging, and what different life stages brought to the table for her. We discuss that process of embracing that we're getting older, and we swap opinions of the current focus on longevity. She shares all about the role of a coach and how she supports her clients in making big changes, we get into hot territory discussing ex-vegans, and she gives us some great takeaways when it comes to what to expect when going vegan or making any big life change. Michele Olender is a Podcaster and Vegan Life Coach with a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell. She specializes in helping individuals to start, RE-start, or re-energize their vegan or plant based practice at any age. Vedge Your Best Podcast has published an episode every week since September 2020, and it's the only podcast aimed at teaching midlife women how to limit and eliminate the consumption of animal products without feeling deprived, overwhelmed or unsupported, even if no one you know is vegan. She shows you how living vegan is the superpower that will unlock your possibilities and give you the confidence to take on your next impossible goal, by doing it YOUR way. That is perhaps, the quality I admire most about Michele, she skips the dogma and goes straight to meeting people where they're at, while still challenging you, as all good coaches do. She opens up about battling severe hormonal imbalances, the pressures of perfectionism, and an intense lifestyle that culminated in a grand mal seizure—a turning point that transformed her approach to health and self-care. Valeria and Lauren bond over their experiences balancing career and motherhood, emphasizing the importance of letting go of control and embracing self-compassion. Lauren reflects on integrating recovery practices like infrared saunas and daily gratitude to shift from merely surviving to truly thriving. This episode provides an honest look at prioritizing self-care and intuition for meaningful personal and professional growth. Lauren Berlingeri is dedicated to inspiring others through fitness and naturally-healthy lifestyle practices. After launching her career as an international model, Berlingeri went on to star in her own show, “Women vs. Workout”—grossing over 15 million views and receiving a Webby Award nomination for Best Host. This experience led to extreme sports hosting for brands such as UFC, EA Sports, and IMG. Having cemented her name within the fitness industry, Berlingeri decided to expand her expertise, earning a holistic nutritionist and health coach certification at The Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Lauren discovered the power of Infrared technology — specifically Infrared saunas — and saw an opportunity to bring the biohacking tool to the masses. Since co-founding HigherDOSE with Katie Kaps, the wellness brand has experienced meteoric success, boiling down to a true revolutionization of the spa business. Lauren brings a fresh perspective to a space that has been dominated by male voices from its inception, making it HigherDOSE's core mission to educate women about their bio-individuality and give them the tools they need to reach their own best selves, with content designed to educate people on how to take control of their own wellness regimens. Why, despite being the most advanced species on the planet, does it feel like humanity is teetering on the brink of self-destruction? Is it just our human nature? Israeli philosopher and historian Yuval Noah Harari doesn't think so — he says the problem is our information trade. This is the focus of his latest book, Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI. Harari explores the evolution of our information networks, from the printing press to the dumpster fire of information on social media and what it all means as we approach the “canonization” of AI.  In this episode, Kara and Harari discuss why information is getting worse; how fiction fuels engagement; and why truth tends to sink in the flood of information washing over us. How did a Ukrainian-born hustler help former President Donald Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani dig up dirt on then-candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter to influence the 2020 presidential election – a scheme that ultimately led to Trump's first impeachment? That's the question behind ‘From Russia with Lev', a new doc from MSNBC's Rachel Maddow that follows Lev Parnas, a Ukrainian-American from a less-than-savory background, who paid his way into the former president's inner circle in 2016 and quickly became Trump's “Ukraine guy.” Kara sits down with Maddow and director Billy Corben to discuss how Parnas gained access to then-POTUS Trump; the mission to take down Hunter Biden; Parnas' role in the ousting of former US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch; and how he eventually came out on the other side of it all. I have turned down several Canadians because I'm afraid I'm not licensed to work with them. But I've recently been told this isn't correct.. Can you please help me figure out what the current regulations are? I'm talking specifically about potential clients who live in Canada booking through me, a Tennessee-based agent. I've been reached by a couple in Vancouver and one in Toronto wanting to plan honeymoons to the Caribbean. We were specifically looking at Sandals, which I'm sure does tons of business with all nationalities. But I wanted to look at other resorts as well. The episode discussed on today's Sound Judgment is Believable: The Coco Berthmann Story. Karen worked with reporter/host Sara Ganim to create Believable. This episode was sponsored by Signal Hill Insights. Want to know how your podcast is affecting listeners? Go beyond counting downloads. Instead, obtain real responses from real listeners to demonstrate the ROI of branded podcasts. You'll learn how research generates practical insights to optimize your production and drive renewals. Karen Given's takeawaysThese are the takeaways from the end of the episode. For more takeaways from all of our guests, subscribe to the Sound Judgment newsletter and visit our blog. Karen set out to tell Coco Berthmann's story as more than a basic scammer story. She wanted to investigate the social safety nets that allowed Coco's deception to happen in the first place. It's the concept of preventable harm: What makes for a much richer, more noteworthy and useful investigation is whether, in fact, the harm could have been prevented, by whom, and why it wasn't. Especially with true crime, there's a temptation to tell only a good yarn—the sensational one about the scammer. But those stories are like cotton candy — they might taste good at the time, but later you wonder why you bothered.  Avoid creating unintended consequences. One of the most important and interesting lessons from Believable comes from the tricky line Karen and Sara walked. They needed to investigate the validity of Coco's story without casting doubt on the stories of every sex trafficking victim, which could have done significant harm. One way they did this — that I would certainly steal if I were you — was to establish early on what is generally known about a phenomenon or a process. We need to understand what's typical in order to get clarity on what's not. Storyboarding is a visual exercise. Karen's a huge fan of sticky notes—in fact, 3M, if you're listening, please name a line of Post-its after her. To get started, lay out your story beats on Post-its on a wall or in project management software like Trello or Asana. Trust me, you'll be moving things around for your entire production process. Make it easy on yourself. Karen Given is a podcast story editor, producer and host. Her most recent project was Believable: the Coco Berthmann Story. A veteran of public radio, Karen started out as a technical director and worked her way up to executive producer and host. Along the way, she won the national Edward R. Murrow award twice, in 2007 and 2017. She also writes Narrative Beat, a free newsletter for journalists and podcast makers who want to tell better stories. Follow Karen Given: Subscribe to her newsletter, Narrative BeatWebsite: Karen GivenInstagram: karengivenLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/klgiven/Facebook: karenlgivenIf you liked my conversation with Karen Given, you'll love: Sound Judgment Season 2/Episode 8: The Heist: How to Produce an Award-Winning Investigative Series with Sally HershipsSound Judgment Season 2/Episode 5: Bone Valley: How to Produce a True Crime Podcast That Makes a DifferenceWe need your support! Near Death is a Dying For Media production with sales and distribution by Lemonada Media.Nikki Boyer's takeawaysThese are the takeaways from the end of the episode. For more takeaways from all of our guests, subscribe to the Sound Judgment newsletter and visit our blog.  Nikki loves having uncomfortable conversations. She'll ask almost anything, and she'll share herself in order to create a welcoming, inviting environment. The result: healing conversations about the things that matter most. It takes a lot of character to admit to the obstacles that stand in our way of doing our best, most honest work. For Nikki, the obstacle was her mindset: Before podcasting, she was an actress, a voice-over artist, and a TV personality. And, she says, she  was always seeking attention. Creating Dying for Sex changed all that. Now, she says, “I have this person's story to tell and I can't wait to share it with you.” She's no longer chasing the spotlight, but giving a gift. One thing Nikki has learned from doing podcasts about death? A lot of people wait to give themselves permission to do the thing they really want to be doing. And in the end, they regret having put it off. If there's a project you've been putting off, don't wait any longer. Give yourself permission and jump in.Near Death: CreditsNikki Boyer: Dying for Media CEO and cofounder and host, Near DeathKevin Sabbe: Dying For Media cofounder and executive producer, Near DeathReverend Peggy: cohost and executive producerKatie Amanda Keane: producer/writerTommy Fields: head of audioNikki BoyerNikki Boyer is the founder and CEO of Dying For Media and a three-time Emmy® award-winning TV host, producer, actress and podcaster. She created, hosted, and is executive producer of the breakout Wondery podcast, “Dying for Sex,” which won the 2021 Ambie Award for Podcast of the Year — and was named one of Apple's favorite podcasts of 2020.In the midst of the global pandemic, Nikki hosted nearly 200 episodes of Wondery's “The Daily Smile,” a podcast about good news, and recently launched “Call Me Curious” via Wondery+, a lighthearted investigative series that delves into offbeat topics. Nikki cohosts the popular weekly podcast, “Straight Talk with Ross Mathews,” which recently recorded its 400th episode. Nikki cohosted the 2021 Ambie Awards show and was a regular guest contributor to The Wendy Williams Show for over eight seasons. She has appeared on virtually every major television talk show, most recently as a guest on The Drew Barrymore Show, supporting the launch of “Call Me Curious.” Along with Kevin Sabbe, she co-created and was co-executive producer of Step Girlfriends, a television concept based on her real life, optioned by CBS Studios. Nikki made her mark hosting Yahoo!'s ultra-popular Daytime in No Time, where she was the most watched host on the internet during the series' five-year run. Follow Nikki Boyer: www.dyingformedia.comwww.nikkiboyer.comInstagram: @nikkiboyer LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nikki-boyer-6873b847/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itsnikkiboyer If you liked this episode, you'll love: Sound Judgment Season 2/Episode 10: How to Tell the Truth: The Art of Memoir with Dana BlackSound Judgment Season 2/Episode 2: Standing Ovation Host Jay Baer: How to Craft a Million-Dollar StorySound Judgment Season 1/Episode 8: How Top Hosts Hook Listeners in 60 Seconds or Less We need your support! For more takeaways from all of our guests, subscribe to the Sound Judgment newsletter and visit our blog. Learn to draw upon rhythm and music to improve your delivery on the mic. Ronald grew up with the musicality of the storytelling and the singing he heard in church, and that turned him into a storyteller who is enchanting to listen to. But we can all do this by feeling the rhythm and cadence of language: Where are the beats? Where are the breaths? It's not just storyboarding that makes great stories; it's how we deliver our stories. Don't censor yourself. At the beginning of the scripting process, Ronald's story editor, Sarah Deeley, had him write down all the ideas he had for each episode. Only then did they narrow those ideas down into a structured narrative. Build stories in layers. Think about context: what does the listener need to know, right now, to understand this episode? To tell a story about his college girlfriend, Ronald had to first explain some stuff about his childhood. What context do you need to offer to make your story land?

By the 1960s, the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children was an early prototype of the for-profit prison. But it wasn't designed that way. In this episode, we go back to the early 20th century when a Black woman and student of Booker T. Washington named Cornelia Bowen founded Mt. Meigs. She envisioned a safe haven for Black kids who weren't being served by the state of Alabama and believed in reform through industrial education. She often was successful, and without her, America might not have had one of its most legendary Black athletes, baseball player Satchel Paige. If you or someone you know attended Mt. Reporter Josie Duffy Rice travels to a small town outside Montgomery, Alabama, and tries to visit a juvenile reform school, once called the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children or Mt. Meigs. The school opened in the early 20th century as a safe haven for Black kids, but by the 1960s, it had become something else entirely. Then one day, in 1968, five Black girls ran away, determined to find someone to help. We hear from one of those girls, Mary, and juvenile probation officer Denny. We also hear from Lonnie, now a world famous artist who was sent to Mt. Meigs at age 11, among others. In Unreformed, Rice investigates this institution, and what happened after someone blew the whistle. It looks at the lasting impact Mt. Meigs has had on their lives and juvenile justice in Alabama. If you or someone you know attended Mt. Meigs and would like to connect with us, please email mtmeigspodcast@gmail.com.  Unreformed has been nominated for two Signal Listener's Choice Award.
