In Episode 347, the season finale of the Glass and Out Podcast, we revisit our conversation with the head coach of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, Rod Brind'Amour. Back in 2019, Brind'Amour was just in his second season as head coach of Carolina and fresh off leading a young Canes team to its first playoff appearance in nine seasons. Fast forward to today, and he is now a Stanley Cup champion as both a player and a coach. This was one of our favourite episodes of all time, and we thought it was the perfect way to honour Brind'Amour and his incredible journey. A special thank you to everyone who tuned in this season. We can't wait to get back at it in September for Season 10! Listen as he shares why it's important to think like a player as a coach, how to get creative when delivering your message, and why coaches should avoid looking in the rearview mirror. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/G8QTmh_wX28 In Episode 342 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we welcome the head coach of the Minnesota Class A State Champions, Jay Hardwick. He just wrapped up his 14th season with Warroad High School, which concluded with the fifth championship in program history. In addition, Hardwick serves as the Hockey Director of Warroad Youth Hockey. He eats, breathes, and sleeps Warroad hockey. Warroad is a community of roughly 1,800 residents in northern Minnesota. In a given year, about 200 of those residents are kids playing in the local youth association. If one player were to come out of Warroad and make it to the NHL, that alone would defy the odds. But not only has the community produced a number of NHL players, including TJ Oshie and Brock Nelson, it has also produced seven Olympians between the U.S. men's and women's national teams. Statistically, Warroad is a unicorn. As a result, it has earned the moniker "Hockeytown USA." Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sXhNxazZXN4 In episode 338 of the Glass and Out Podcast, Coachella Valley Firebirds assistant coach Stu Bickel stops by to chat. Bickel is a great example of a coach who has taken all the information he was fed as a player, evolved it, and made it his own as he has embarked on his coaching journey. Bickel grew up just outside of Minneapolis and would go on to star for Eden Prairie High School. After two seasons in the USHL, he joined his hometown University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, but after one season, as an undrafted free agent, he decided to bet on himself and make the jump into professional hockey. The move paid off, as in his fourth season, he appeared in 69 games with the New York Rangers. While not formally a coach at this stage, we sense that the first player he ever coached was himself. He needed to define his strengths and weaknesses and evolve his game into one that would enable him to contribute on a nightly basis in the National Hockey League. That is now a job he's doing full-time today, developing defencemen for the NHL's Seattle Kraken, the parent club of the Firebirds. Listen as he shares his process for improving defencemen, the importance of being good on the breakout, and the power of video as a teaching tool. In episode 333 of the Glass and Out Podcast we had the honour of being joined by the greatest hockey coach of all time, Scotty Bowman. As a head coach, Bowman led the Montreal Canadians, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings to a combined 9 Stanley Cups. He also captured another five cups in front office roles. He is the NHL's all-time wins leader, with a total of 1,467 between the regular season and playoffs and was twice awarded the Jack Adams trophy as the NHL's Coach of the Year. But above all else, Scotty Bowman is the ultimate student of the game. He was able to adapt to new rules, new generations of players, the introduction of Europeans to the NHL, and eventually, the influx of Russians that arrived with the collapse of the Soviet Union. He saw drastically different versions of the game from the rough and tumble 70's to the high flying 80's and the dead puck era in the 90's. At 92, his memory, as you are about to hear, is simply remarkable and there is no doubt that ability helped him gain a competitive advantage from behind the bench based on his ability to recall the slightest detail and nuance within a game. In episode 330 of the Glass and Out Podcast we revisit one of our favourite talks from last year's TCS Live conference. Cleveland Browns Assistant GM Catherine Hickman took to the stage to deliver a powerful keynote address: Leveraging Human Capital: The Formula to Winning in Sport. Hickman is a Canadian woman who grew up speaking French. With this in mind, and considering there are only 32 franchises in the league and limited roles available, her rise through the football ranks to become the sport's highest ranking female executive has been remarkable, and well-earned. She is originally from Montreal and practiced as a corporate tax attorney before pivoting into a career in football, her dream growing up. In 2015 she took on an internship with the CFL's Montreal Allouetes and the rest as they say is history. Prior to joining the Browns, Hickman spent 4 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, working under two time Super Bowl Champion and Executive of the Year, Howie Roseman. Kraatz and his partner Shae-Lynn Bourne dominated ice-dancing in Canada, winning 10 national titles during their 13 year skating partnership, participating in 3 Olympic games and in 2003 captured the ice-dance World Championship. Today, he spends time on the ice with some of hockey's top talents and is in a constant state of finding new ways to elevate how his students perform on the ice. In episode 327 of the Glass and Out Podcast we welcome back Head Coach of the Wheeling Nailers, Ryan Papaioannou. With The Coaches Site and Glass and Out, one of the cool aspects is we get to touch base with coaches during the various chapters of their journey as they climb their way up the coaching ladder. We first connected with Papaioannou during his time with the AJHL's Brooks Bandits. Under his leadership the Bandits captured seven AJHL Championships, one BCHL Championship (the Bandits joined the BCHL in advance of last season), and four National Championships at the Jr A level in Canada. At the beginning of this season Papaioannou was hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins organization to coach their ECHL affiliate in Wheeling. Currently, the Nailers are tied for 5th overall in the ECHL standings. More than anything, Ryan's successful transition from tier 2 hockey to the professional ranks is a signal that leadership and the ability to develop a winning culture matters more than what level you've coached at. With Penticton, Harbinson built one of the most storied franchises at the Jr A level in Canada, leading the Vees to multiple championships, including six Fred Page Cup titles, a Western Canada Cup, a Doyle Cup, and an RBC Cup National Championship.
