In another lifetime, Julia was Tim's boss at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Now she's a best-selling author with six novels to her credit. Her latest is Night Will Find You. Zac gives it five stars. Tim confesses he hasn't yet read it, but that doesn't stop him from reading to Julia the worst review of the book he could find on Amazon. Other stuff you'll hear: how Julia approaches the writing process, why editing is better on paper than screens, and if a building can be shaped like a barn without actually being a barn. Also, the city of Decatur catches some shade. Consider subscribing to D Magazine. Print makes the podcast possible.

The Guest, Emma Cline   Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she's been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her. Propelled by desperation and a mutable sense of morality, she spends the week leading up to Labor Day moving from one place to the next, a cipher leaving destruction in her wake. Taut, propulsive, and impossible to look away from, Emma Cline's The Guest is a spellbinding literary achievement.    Night Will Find You, Julia Heaberlin Vivvy Bouchet, daughter of a known psychic, was ten when she saved a boy's life by making an impossible prediction. Now she's an astrophysicist in Texas, devoted to science, but the boy she saved has become a cop who continues to believe she can see things no one else can. When he begs for help on the high-profile cold case of a kidnapped girl, Vivvy steps back into the ocean of voices that once nearly drowned her. She is forced to team up with detective Jesse Sharp, a skeptic of anything but fact. When Vivvy becomes the target of a conspiracy theorist podcaster, she fights back with both her scientific mind and her inexplicable gifts, hoping to lure a kidnapper, find a child who haunts her, and lay some of her own ghosts to rest. Sharply relevant, Julia Heaberlin's Night Will Find You explores the mysterious nature of belief—in psychic power, in science, in conspiracies, in a higher power—and the delicate dance between scientific truth and the things we can't explain.    LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Night will Find You by Julia Heaberlin (a terrific psychological thriller writer who did a wonderful book called Black Eyed Susans several years ago, and others since). This is about a woman named Vivvy who at the age of ten predicted the death of a young boy, then managed to save him when the moment came and they've remained good friends all their lives. He's a cop and is convinced she's psychic and begs her to help with a high profile cold case of a missing girl (working alongside another, deeply cynical cop). When a popular conspiracy theorist podcaster finds out about her involvement he spews conspiracy theories about the case. With everything on the line, she needs to fight back.  Lioness by Emily Perkins - New Zealand author. Therese Thorne is in her 50's, wife of a high profile construction magnate and over the years she's gotten very used to a particular lifestyle - while building her own brand of homewares. They're planning to step back a bit and move to Sydney, when it suddenly comes to light that Trevor's been involved with fraud and corruption in his business, at which point they're all over the media and shunned by friends they'd had for many years. Therese finds some solace with her neighbour, Clare, who lives a completely different life and shows Therese that there are other ways of being. This is the story of a woman having to examine herself and the choices she's made and figure out what to do next.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

All great authors know that our entire purpose is to create a story for readers that allows them to escape their everyday lives and be transported to a different time and place. And the only way to ensure we paint pictures that are vivid enough to allow our readers to have a visceral reading experience is to get as many of the details of our story right. The best way to do this is by researching before you write certain things you include in the story. You can definitely do online research, but there are many other ways you can research and make sure you know enough about the story you’re writing to make even the most fantastic fiction novel seem like a real experience to your readers. This week, we’re discussing some of the most effective, unique ways you can learn about all the aspects of your story before you write. In this episode, you will: · Learn the different aspects of your story that require research and planning · Learn ways to research outside of internet searches · Learn how to store and organize your research for easier access when needed · Learn creative ways to investigate and learn about your setting, characters, and plot Hosts & Guests Host – Christina Kaye Guest Host – Author Julia Heaberlin To learn more about Julia and her book: https://juliaheaberlin.com/ Shop for Essentials/Supplies for Your Writing Nook: https://modernbossboutique.com/ To Follow Write Your Best Book on ALL Social Media: @writeyourbestbook To Contact Christina Kaye: info@writeyourbestbook.com www.writeyourbestbook.com For a Consultation with Christina Kaye https://letsmeet.io/writeyourbestbook/free-coaching-call For a FREE Sample Edit & Quote for Book Editing: https://writeyourbestbook.com/contact-us/ Online Writing Course - Best Book Method: How to Write, Publish, and Sell Your Book https://bookboss-writingcourse-vault.teachable.com/purchase?product_id=2421304

"Never say good-bye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting."  J. M. Barrie Pan The main character & the narrator of the story has become obsessed with her sisters’ disappearance and death. Her sister disappeared when she was 12 years of age, and Grace’s life ambition is to solve the mystery behind the disappearance. Much of the evidence leads Grace to Carl Louis Feldman who worked as a documentary photographer. Grace becomes inspired and completes her own investigation by becoming and training as a vigilante. The first goal that she had to accomplish was to develop a relationship with Carl who is living in an assistive care due to having dementia. The journey to solving the mystery begins when Grace drives Carl to different destinations across Texas. Each destination brings not only more clues but also obstacles that Grace has to overcome before finding out the truth of what happened to her sister. If you love mysteries with twists, this book is for you! The author of Paper Ghosts, Julia Heaberlin, is a native Texan who grew up in a small town of Decatur. When she writes, she has to include hope and humor into the theme of the story. "I want deeper ideas roaming my plots—cutting-edge forensic science, the death penalty, date rape, and dementia, to name a few. I like to play mind games." Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes highly acclaimed author Kathleen Kent to the studio to discuss THE BURN and her other novels.  She says: "When I was a child I loved epic, historical novels, and I read a lot of Dickens, Poe and James Michener.  Later, some of my favorite authors included Annie Dillard, Philip Meyer, Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy—authors who wrote about the American Heartland.    A few of my recent favorite novels include A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles,  Before the Fall by Noah Hawley, Black Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin, and Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke."  ABOUT THE BURN:   There's not much that can make Detective Betty Rhyzyk flinch. But her wounds are still fresh from an encounter with an apocalyptic cult known as The Family, and she's having trouble readjusting to life as it once was. She's back at work as a narcotics detective, but something isn't right -- at work, where someone has been assassinating confidential informants, or at home, where she struggles to connect with her loving wife, Jackie. To make matters worse, Betty's partner seems to be increasingly dependent on the prescription painkillers he was prescribed for the injuries he sustained rescuing her.        Forced into therapy, a desk assignment, and domestic bliss, Betty's at the point of breaking when she decides to go rogue, investigating her own department and chasing down phantom sightings of the cult leader who took her hostage. The chase will lead her to the dark heart of a drug cartel terrorizing Dallas, and straight to the crooked cops who plan to profit from it all. There's never a dull moment in Dallas, especially now that Detective Betty's back.   Listen on your favorite podcast app!
