Kris is selling football cards at a retirement home, hoping to get The Golden Girls in on the grift. Tara is happily boring and middle-aged with her triple-paned windows and kids who keep teasing her that her new glasses make her look like a Pokemon bug researcher. Official Recommendations From Kris: Straight Up (2019) Kris's official recommendation this week is the romantic comedy Straight Up. This movie has the dubious honour of coming out at the exact right moment to get obliterated by the onset of the covid pandemic. Thankfully, Kris is running the revival efforts and getting the news out there to the people. Straight Up is a movie for the younger set, with a closeted gay man and woman getting into a lavenderish relationship that changes them both for the better. Kris says it's a solid, feel-good movie that you should check out. From Tara: Orlando, My Political Biography (2023) Tara's official recommendation this week is the documentary Orlando, My Political Biography. Using Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a primary text, this documentary explores the contemporary trans experience through 26 performers, all of which play the titular Orlando. Tara found this an incredibly thought-provoking and cerebral experience. Kris has been writing and is stuck in a wild limbo where the days to her next book's deadline get smaller as the story keeps growing. Tara suggests a new trend to solve Kris's problem, before our hosts wade bravely into the epilogue debate. They're deep, dangerous waters, but they have the nerve to say their piece. And to top it off, Tara bores the class by gushing about her upcoming triple-paned windows. You know, real adulting stuff. Official Recommendations From Kris: Chasing Chasing Amy (2023) Kris's official recommendation this week is the documentary, Chasing Chasing Amy. It tracks director Sav Rodgers' experience with the 1997 film Chasing Amy and how important that movie was to his queer identity growing up, including that it saved his life. Filmed over five years, Chasing Chasing Amy details Sav's exploration of the cult hit and his changing opinions of it when new information comes to light. From Tara: Sweet Home Alabarden Park by TJ O'Shea Tara's official recommendation this week is the newly released sapphic romance Sweet Home Alabarden Park by TJ O'Shea. It's a "sort of one night to forever set in the UK," which features recently cheated on and divorced Fiona and the soft butch gentlewoman Alice, who ends up being nobility. Tara loved this book and it's already her best book of the year. In part three of their 3rd Annual Mysterious Galaxy Summer Bingo Showdown Throwdown, things get particularly contentious as Smack and Gabi have five final chances to claim the 2023 title for best books read during the summer. One match-up in particular between a delightful queer-platonic horror novel and a differently delightful cozy middle-grade fantasy has us literally throwing hands (in rock-paper-scissors). Other highlights include a queer historical murder mystery, yet more genderbending main characters, another hacienda book (this one with flowers), and an excellently crafted fairytale retelling (that Smack plugs on Gabi's behalf). Find out who wins as our Throwdown trilogy concludes! The titles showdowned throwdowned in this episode include: The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea (The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea #1) by Maggie Tokuda-Hall vs. Lavender House (Andy Mills #1) by Lev AC Rosen A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger vs. The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw Trailer Park Trickster (Adam Binder #2) by David R. Narrator Hewot Tedla captures the tone of brassy independence, fiery romance, and chilling terror in this teen thriller by Kalynn Bayron. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss Charity's unusual job — being the “final girl” in a live action horror film experience at Camp Mirror Lake. When employees go missing and strange happenings pile up, Tedla's tone devolves into gut-wrenching emotion as Charity uncovers the real evil lurking in Mirror Lake. A taut slasher-movie homage. In our third season of Dancing on Desks, we are exploring pleasure. We are guided by two questions: How might our personal rest and pleasure practices sustain our collective liberation? And how are our rest and pleasure connected to education as the practice of freedom? In this first episode, Philadelphia-based writer and creator Nicole Young joins us to share her story of what became possible when she quit her job as the executive director of a school in New Orleans to write full-time and to create fantasy worlds for Black girls in middle grades novels. Who wouldn't want a fairy godmother to solve our problems with the flick of a magic wand? We know that's not a healthy fantasy and yet, fairy godmothers aren't going away. In fact, they've been proliferating in contemporary fantasy novels and reinterpretations of Cinderella. But they don't look or act like you might expect. I talk with Butler University lecturer Jeana Jorgensen and PhD student Abigail Fine about the origin of fairy godmothers and why they're ripe for reimagining. And I talk with author Gail Caron Levine about her groundbreaking novel Ella Enchanted, which broke the mold on fairy tales. Featuring readings from Aliza Pearl. Jeana Jorgensen's latest book is Fairy Tales 101: An Accessible Introduction to Fairy Tales. In this episode we discussed Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron and Kissing the Witch by Emma Donahue. Other contemporary novels with fairy godmother-type characters include Geekerella by Ashley Poston, Shadows on The Moon by Zoe Marriott, Ash by Malinda Lo, Ash & Bramble by Sarah Prineas, and Disenchanted: The Trials of Cinderella by Megan Morrison. "I'm not happy pretending everything is fine when I know it's not." Drew and Cassie return after a hiatus to continue our Cinderella Month with our next book, Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. This 2020 YA novel imagines a harshly patriarchal world set 200 years after Cinderella's death, in which her story is used to enforce the rules of the world. Our heroine is 16-year-old Sophia, who is about the attend the ball for the first time, and who is desperate to rebel against the world thanks to her love for her best friend, Erin. Sophia ends up fleeing the ball and starting a campaign to bring down the king along with help from a descendant of Cinderella's stepsister, the original fairy godmother, and more. While we share many of the same frustrations with this book, we do appreciate some of the ideas at the core of the story! Join our community! This is a podcast where Lisa analyzes literature and discusses several bookish topics. This week, Lisa released a Book Bits episode about Barnes & Noble's new policy regarding its effort to reduce the types of new books they're selling. Authors have posted online, including Kelly Yang, author of the Front Porch Desk series, along with author Kalynn Bayron who is releasing a new book this fall named: The Vanquishers. Britney S. Lewis's debut novel, The Undead Truth of Us, was told it would not be shelved at Barnes & Noble. Several articles, including Book Riot and Publishers Marketplace, delve into how this policy means fewer middle-grade and debut authors will get their books on the shelves at Barnes & Noble. *The book titles mentioned include affiliate links. You can support the podcast by purchasing a book with the links because the podcast receives a small commission. For more information, find Lisa on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and her website.

This week, your hosts discuss Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. Cinderella has been dead for 200 years, but her legacy lives on in the form of a yearly ball that sees teen girls married off to the men in the kingdom. Sophia struggles with the oppressive traditions of her homeland, and would rather marry her best friend Erin. However, when Sophia chooses to flee the ball, into the forest, rather than marry an abusive suitor, she stumbles across Constance, Cinderella's last descendant, and Sophia learns the real story of Cinderella's and her plans for the famous ball. Together, they embark on a mission to end the reign of King Manford, and make Mersailles a kingdom that allows women to choose their own fates.

In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—interview Clare Sager about building different worlds in our fiction. Clare Sager is an office lackey turned full-time author. With both a bachelor of arts and a masters of arts in Creative Writing, she is now living her life-long dream of writing fantasy adventure stories of swoon-worthy, troublesome men and strong, sassy women who can handle them. When she's not writing or master planning her next book, she's an editor, outline coach, and formatter. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, sewing, and lifting weights at the gym (she's as shocked by the latter as anyone). Her stationery addiction knows no bounds, with a washi tape and fountain pen collection to rival that of a stationery store. She loves to spend time chilling out with her planner plotting world domination. She likes cats, coffee, and cocktails, and speaks fluent sarcasm. What we talked about Why Clare felt compelled to build a different world for her fictional characters How consistently asking yourself “What if…?” will help you build better fictional worlds How to use a coin (or dice!) to populate your world with a wide set of characters That diverse characters are just like any other characters The importance of being curious about the world and remaining open to what there is to learn (Re)sources mentioned on the show All about Clare: https://claresager.com Clare's books: https://claresager.com/books Clare's author services: https://services.claresager.com The Decolonial Atlas: https://decolonialatlas.wordpress.com Writing the Other Tumblr: https://writingtheother.tumblr.com Ann Leckie, author of Ancillary Justice: https://annleckie.com Kalynn Bayron, author of Cinderella Is Dead: https://www.kalynnbayron.com/books Jessica M. We sat down for an interview with YA author Kalynn Bayron and talked about her new novel, This Poison Heart. It's got a gothic house, a secret garden, locked rooms and a girl who can control plants. 'Black Poison Ivy' is what she calls her heroine Briseis and there is plenty of blooming action when she arrives at her inheritance, a dark mansion over acres of land. Obligations and oppression, "Cinderella is Beyonce", and fairytales where we are the center; the Book Babes (ha! four of us again!) interview Kalynn Bayron, author of Cinderella is Dead!
Delicious and nutritious, "Prince Charming who", and the impracticality of glass slippers; the Book Babes (well three of us) review Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron.
The sisters of I'm Not A Peach Crayon are back to discuss the classic fairy tale of Cinderella with a 21st century feel. Cinderella is Dead, by author Kalynn Bayron takes place 200 years after the death of Cinderella. In a land where women are little more than property and finding a husband at the ball should be a young woman's highest ambition, Sophia fights to be who she is and love who she wishes. BEWARE there are some spoilers.
On Wednesday we say "F*ck the patriarchy!" This week Hallie is joined by Kay from @booksforkay to discuss the super badass Cinderella retelling, Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. Hallie and Kay discuss growing up as avid readers, and how they found their love of books, and the amazing publication of more black fantasy authors. The twi also talk about what it means when someone "can't relate" to a character and how differently people receive fantasy characters based on their physical descriptions as well as how important it is to truly diversify your shelves. Cinderella Is Dead : By - Kalynn Bayron It's 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl's display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again. Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella's mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all--and in the process, they learn that there's more to Cinderella's story than they ever knew . . . This fresh take on a classic story will make readers question the tales they've been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them. Kalynn Bayron is an author and classically trained vocalist. She grew up in Alaska, which apparently means skiing and ice-skating in PE class. She studied opera in college, trained in ballet and can play the clarinet. As if all of that isn't talent enough, she's recently published her debut novel, Cinderella Is Dead. Interview starts at 20 minutes Mini book club: Read with Pride (Paper and Hearts Society Book 2) We enjoyed this YA novel about the importance of diverse and inclusive books (even if it did give us flashbacks to high school stress) In this interview, we chat about: The inspiration for Cinderella is Dead (ft Disney Princesses, an old book of fairytales, Once Upon a Time and Wicked) Why fairytales have endured for centuries Exploring violence in YA and choosing how to represent that on the page Using genre to explore contemporary issues and making the discussion more accessible for people who wouldn't usually read issues-heavy contemporary novels Kalynn's journey to a book deal and publication Knowing when to give up on a story idea and writing the story you're truly passionate about, not just what you think people want Why reader reactions keep Kalynn grounded and some of the amazing responses to Cinderella is Dead The musicals Kalynn is obsessed with Books and other things mentioned: https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/vote (Books Are My Bag Awards) Heartstopper by Alice Oseman Follow Kalynn https://www.instagram.com/kalynnbayron/ (@kalynnbayron) and get your copy of Cinderella is Dead at all good bookshops.
