Send us a textThis month we read and review She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. Like all of our reviews, the first part is spoiler free. Here's a little about She Who Became the Sun:To possess the Mandate of Heaven, the female monk Zhu will do anything“I refuse to be nothing…”In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family's eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family's clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected. When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother's identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate. After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future her brother's abandoned greatness. We hope you enjoy the episode!Do you have a book you'd like us to review on this show? Today, we have Becca’s chat with audiobook narrator and indie author Natalie Naudus. You may know her voice from such hits as One Last Stop, Starling House, She Who Became the Sun, and Daughter of the Moon Goddess, among many more. Natalie talks about how she got in to audiobook narration, and what the process for narrating an audiobook looks like; she has some advice for people looking to get in to the industry, and for indie authors working with narrators for the first time; she also talks about her debut novel coming out this summer and, of course, she shares some books she’s loved recently.

If you were fascinated to see the human breast might, kind of, sort of look like a flower, then you will LOVE this book. Really. That is the vibe. The Emperor is new and fervently religious. The Princess is rebellious and loves her country. Men are in power. Men make decisions. Men have decided the Princess is to be exiled. Men cannot tame the power of the land and its people, even though they are trying. Princess Malini is out of options and her new maidservant, Priya, is a breath of new life. Politics are front and central here as the story of a conquered people, religion, and the unexpected loyalty of the land move in tandem with Emperor Chandra's horrific plans: Purify the women. Burn the women. How about they rise up instead?! The holiday season is upon us, another strange, unforgettable year is almost done, and here at Coode Street it's time for our annual gift guide/year in review, where we recommend some books we loved during the year. This time out we invited special guests and good friends James Bradley, Alix E. Harrow, and Ian Mond to join us to recommend just a few of the books we'd loved the most during 2021. Perhaps more than in any other year, this was a time when we all were almost surprised at how much great reading we found. Because this is Coode Street, traditions are traditions and we had some technical issues. All is good for most of the hour of the recording, but there's a jump or two towards the end. We hope you'll excuse this, and that the recommendations will prove of interest. As always, our thanks to Alix, James, and Ian for making time to talk to us. We hope you enjoy the podcast and that the guide is of some use. To help, the recommendations are below. What do you call a fantasy country that is inspired by 19th century Russia, but is NOT 19th century Russia? In part 2 of our Shadow and Bone discussion we look at how Leigh Bardugo drew from Russian culture and history to create the world of Ravka, the folklore and fairytales we see woven throughout the Grishaverse, and how these influences helped shape the TV series. We also explore Alina and Mal's experiences as children of war through parallels with works with similar character archetypes and themes, such as Attack on Titan, The Hunger Games, and the novel She Who Became the Sun. GUEST: Shelley Parker-Chan is an Asian-Australian former diplomat and international development adviser who spent nearly a decade working on human rights, gender equality and LGBT rights in Southeast Asia. Named after the Romantic poet, she was raised on a steady diet of Greek myths, Arthurian legend and Chinese tales of suffering and tragic romance. Her debut novel She Who Became the Sun owes more than a little to all three. A lush, fresh literary voice merges with commercial appeal in this accomplished, poetic debut of war and destiny. Sweeping across an epic alternate China, She Who Became the Sun is Mulan meets The Song of Achilles—a bold reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty as the story of a female monk who will stop at nothing to gain the Mandate of Heaven and achieve greatness. Daily Mail calls it “Immersive storytelling at its finest,” and her novel, just released in July 2021, has already become a #1 international bestseller and is an Editor's Pick for Science Fiction/Fantasy. In 2017 she was awarded an Otherwise (Tiptree) Fellowship for a work of speculative narrative that expands our understanding of gender. She currently lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her family. https://shelleyparkerchan.com/ HOST: Allison M. Hubbard is a multi-genre novelist, focusing on literary science fiction, contemporary romance, and women's fiction. Her debut novel, dibs, was named a Finalist and Reader's Choice Category Leader for Romance in the 2020 Kindle Book Awards. Her newest release, Move On, Melinda, is now available. Allison is also the co-host of Vox Vomitus, the number one show on the Authors on the Air Radio Network. https://afictionalhubbard.com/
