Turning Negativity Into Insight: Julie De Jesus on Interviewing Kevin Franke and What the Comments Reveal About Us

Tony sits down with his friend and Love, ADHD co-host, Julie De Jesus, to unpack her recent interview with Kevin Franke, ex-husband of Ruby Franke. Ruby, the former “8 Passengers” YouTuber, pled guilty in late 2023 to multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and, along with her business partner Jodi Hildebrandt, was sentenced in February 2024 to up to 30 years in prison under Utah law. While Tony originally planned to ask Julie about Kevin, the conversation took a different turn: the tidal wave of comments Julie received after posting her interview. With humor, honesty, and therapeutic insight, Tony and Julie read through some of those YouTube comments out loud, responding in real time. They explore why people are so quick to judge, why emotions often masquerade as facts, and how online criticism reveals more about the commenter than the person being critiqued. You'll hear candid reflections on: What Kevin's story stirs up in people (and why) How emotional immaturity shows up in the comment section (projection, black-and-white thinking, and mistaking feelings for truth) Why leaving abusive situations is never as simple as outsiders believe The concept of “whole object relations” — holding multiple emotions at once How Julie navigated negativity while staying grounded and authentic This episode is part deep dive into psychology, part raw behind-the-scenes of content creation, and part hilarious reading of unfiltered internet comments. If you've ever wondered why strangers online lash out—or how to handle criticism with both compassion and boundaries—this one's for you. 00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview 00:33 Julie De Jesus and Her Interview with Kevin Frankie 01:11 Handling Criticism and Emotional Reactions 02:40 Understanding Emotional Maturity 03:55 Navigating Online Criticism 07:40 Promoting the Upcoming Cruise 11:51 The Future of Love A DHD Podcast 12:24 Deep Dive into Kevin Frankie's Interview 21:04 Personal Reflections and Recognitions 31:30 Introduction to Kate's Family Dynamics 31:32 Exploring Religious Roles and Power Dynamics 32:23 Personal Reflections and Family Dynamics 35:00 Commentary on Interview Techniques 36:26 Debating Faith and Atheism 38:40 Addressing Online Criticism 42:20 Therapy and Personal Growth 53:05 Inner Child and Emotional Healing 01:00:02 Concluding Thoughts and Reflections Contact Tony at contact@tonyoverbay.com to learn more about his Emotional Architects men's group. 8 Passengers Fallout: Divorce Finalized as Ruby Franke Serves Prison Time The story of Ruby Franke officially closed a major chapter this week as a Utah judge signed off on her divorce from Kevin Franke—marking the legal end to a marriage that once played out in front of millions on YouTube, before unraveling in one of the most disturbing child abuse cases the state has seen in years. It's now on paper: the marriage that began in 2000, spanned six children, and was broadcast through a curated lens on the “8 Passengers” channel, is over. But the real story isn't the divorce. It's the fact that Kevin Franke is now the sole legal guardian of their four remaining minor children—kids who were, until recently, trapped in an abusive nightmare behind the closed doors of a so-called parenting enterprise. Let's rewind to how we got here. In August 2023, the illusion broke. One of the youngest Franke children—emaciated, injured, and desperate—escaped out of a window from the home of Jodi Hildebrandt in Ivins, Utah. That home wasn't a safehouse. It was a crime scene. The boy went to a neighbor's house asking for food and water, and what they saw led them to call police immediately. Authorities later found his sister in similar condition. The two women at the center—Ruby Franke and her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt—were arrested and eventually admitted to four counts each of aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony. According to Washington County Attorney Eric Clarke, the kids had been kept in conditions he described as “concentration camp-like.” We're talking about extreme malnutrition, physical injuries, emotional torment—the works. Ruby Franke is now serving at least four years in Utah State Prison, with four consecutive sentences of one to fifteen years each. She's admitted to a range of abuses, including physically torturing her son, dunking his head underwater, forcing him into strenuous physical tasks, and making both children stand in direct sunlight for long periods without food or water. This wasn't “tough love.” It was cruelty, systemized and delivered under the pretense of discipline. Meanwhile, the divorce paperwork went through the usual formalities. Filed under “irreconcilable differences”—which feels like calling a wildfire a small campfire. Kevin Franke submitted the signed stipulation in early March, and by March 20th, Judge Roger Griffin finalized the divorce decree. Under the agreement, Kevin walks away with full custody, their Springville home, and a 2.8-acre property in Scofield. Ruby gets to keep $85,000 she withdrew before they split, but the rest of the couple's joint financial accounts go to Kevin, with the exception of an investment account in her name. Kevin also agreed not to pursue child support from Ruby, effectively considering anything owed already paid. It's a move that might say more about his priorities—focused on healing the kids rather than fighting over dollars. Neither side asked for alimony. Apparently, they both have what they need to move on—at least financially. What's more, despite everything, Ruby Franke has chosen to keep the last name “Franke.” Whether that's a legal convenience or something deeper is anyone's guess, but it's a curious choice given the devastation tied to that name now. Both Ruby and Jodi Hildebrandt accepted plea deals that cut their total charges from six to four. But make no mistake—the weight of what they admitted to remains enormous. They each face up to 60 years behind bars, though with Utah's system, they'll be eligible for parole after four. At her sentencing, Ruby addressed her children, thanking the police for “saving them”—and, she said, saving her. She claimed that being handcuffed was the beginning of her freedom, describing herself as so twisted by manipulation that she believed “dark was light and right was wrong.” It's a haunting statement, especially when you consider the cost it came with. In the end, the legal lines are drawn. Kevin Franke has custody. Ruby Franke has convictions. And six children are now trying to rebuild a childhood that was shattered under the watchful eye of a camera and the hidden weight of abuse. #8PassengersCase #RubyFranke #ChildAbuseSentencing #FrankeDivorceFinalized Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? She's a really good girl - that almost killed 2 of their youngest children.  She kept them locked away in her marriage counselor/“lovers” mansion basement - torturing them for months. Soon, all the evidence will come out - their abuse diaries, the alleged romantic relationship, and the grim detail that they were planning on buying a 500 acre property in the middle of nowhere to carry out more extreme abuse.  But the question on many people's minds is - how was nobody else involved and how did nobody else know what was happening? Kevin Franke, Ruby's devoted husband, has become the center of conspiracy theories. With people wondering just how much he knew, just how much he's covering up now, and if he should be charged. Also, why did he try to sue his oldest daughter after his wife was arrested? What about the mysterious woman - Pam? Two Franke teenage girls were found deep cleaning her home the day of the arrests. How come she doesn't appear that shocked to find out what Ruby had been doing? Is it because she knew all along? And what will Ruby and Jodi do to each other in prison? Will they turn on each other to save themselves - or do they still believe everyone is working with the devil?   Full show notes at rottenmangopodcast.com

Kevin Franke A Victim or an Enabler? FBI Expert Breaks It Down Was Kevin Franke just another victim in Ruby Franke's twisted world, or was he an enabler quietly standing by as the unthinkable happened? Hulu's Devil in the Family has reignited the debate, shifting the spotlight onto Kevin—her husband, the father of their children, and the man who claims he was left in the dark. But how does his body language, his words, and his behavior hold up under the scrutiny of a behavioral expert? Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke dives into the psychology behind Kevin Franke, Ruby Franke, and the disturbing dynamics that fueled this nightmare. Was Kevin merely manipulated, or was he complicit in his own passivity? And what role did Jodi Hildebrandt play in pushing an already dangerous ideology even further? With deep analysis of the LDS faith's influence, the power of manipulation, and the eerie similarities to past criminal cases, this episode unpacks the unsettling reality behind the Franke family scandal. So, was Kevin Franke just a tool in Ruby's grand design, or is there more to the story than meets the eye? #RubyFranke #KevinFranke #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #LDS #Manipulation #FBIAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Was Kevin Franke Brainwashed?  The Truth Behind His Loyalty to Ruby Was Kevin Franke a clueless victim of psychological manipulation, or was he just too comfortable letting someone else call the shots—even when it meant his own kids were suffering? The Hulu documentary Devil in the Family peels back the layers of one of the most twisted true crime cases in recent years, exposing how extreme parenting, blind faith, and YouTube fame created the perfect storm for abuse to thrive. Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott dig into the psyche of Kevin Franke—the father of six who claims he had no idea what was happening inside his own home. How does someone convince themselves that their spouse's increasingly extreme behavior is just "parenting techniques" and not outright abuse? And more importantly, how do you walk away from your own children for a year because a self-proclaimed guru told you to? Kevin insists he was blindsided, but can you really be a passive bystander when your own kids are suffering? And after everything, why does he still say he loves Ruby Franke? Is he on a path to healing, or is he just one manipulative figure away from falling into another trap? #TrueCrime #RubyFranke #HiddenKillers #PsychologyOfAbuse #ExtremeParenting #CultMentality #KevinFranke Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? FBI Behavioral Analyst on Why Kevin Franke Didn't Act Sooner How do you go from parenting to full-blown exorcisms? That's the twisted reality of the alleged abuse unfolding in the Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt saga. What started as a strict religious upbringing spiraled into something far more sinister—kids being duct-taped, starved, and subjected to cruel punishments, all under the guise of “purging uncleanliness.” But how did Ruby go from a popular mommy vlogger to someone who saw her own children as demons? And was Jodi the puppet master, manipulating Ruby for her own twisted needs? Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke break down the psychological manipulation, cult-like tactics, and sheer horror behind this case. From Jodi's alleged possession performances to Kevin Franke's apparent addiction to Ruby, it's a deep dive into a world where control, abuse, and religious extremism collided—leaving the most vulnerable to suffer. Did Jodi truly believe in what she was preaching, or was she just cashing in on control and chaos? Does Kevin Franke Really 'Get It', If He Still Loves Ruby Franke? Was Kevin Franke a victim of coercion, or did he just turn a blind eye? The case of Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt has been dissected from every angle, but Kevin—the husband who stayed, the father who didn't intervene—is a puzzle in himself. Psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to unravel the layers of manipulation, blind faith, and pathological passivity that may have led Kevin to abandon his children to a house of horrors. Kevin now claims he was just another victim, swept up in a toxic mix of religious obedience and psychological control. But can we really accept that explanation? Or is it a convenient way to dodge accountability for the role he played—or failed to play—in protecting his own kids? As a new Hulu documentary attempts to shed light on his story, we ask the question: Should Kevin Franke be held responsible, or is he just another casualty of a cult-like system? #RubyFranke #KevinFranke #JodiHildebrandt #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #CoerciveControl #CrimeDocumentary Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Convicted YouTuber Ruby Franke Left Journal Detailing Abuse of Her ‘Demonic' Children Before Ruby Franke, the infamous YouTube mom behind the "8Passengers" channel, pleaded guilty to child abuse charges, authorities uncovered something chilling—a handwritten journal detailing the suffering she inflicted on her own children. In it, she described acts of cruelty with a detachment that made even seasoned investigators pause. As revealed in Hulu's new docuseries Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke, a police investigator reads from the journal, bringing Franke's own words into the open. One entry is particularly disturbing: "Sleep outside, shaved her head, doused her with water, over his nose and mouth, head in the toilet, needs to be painful. Blood on his face, scream and scream." Another entry is no less horrifying: "I told the boy, he emulates a snake. If he wants to emulate the Savior, he needs to be a hundred percent obedient with exactness. The body must engage in good work and the good works need to be painful. I have the power of God and he must obey." The extent of the abuse detailed in these pages is staggering. In one passage, Franke wrote about forcing her son into the sun, then returning with a "cactus poker" to prod him. She recorded her own twisted logic: "When I poke his back to get in the sun, he doesn't even flinch. I told him, give your demon friend a message for me. I will not rest. I will not stop. I will not leave. I will fight him until the day you die." These weren't the ramblings of someone suffering a temporary lapse in judgment. They were calculated. Premeditated. Written down as if she was keeping a ledger of pain. In August 2023, it all came to an end when Franke's 12-year-old son escaped from the home she shared with her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt. Starving, injured, and desperate, he ran to a neighbor and pleaded for help. The neighbor, moved to tears by the boy's skeletal appearance, called 911. Soon after, authorities discovered his 9-year-old sister inside Hildebrandt's home in an equally horrific condition. Franke and her husband, Kevin, had gained a massive following through "8Passengers," where their brand of strict, authoritarian parenting was often defended as tough love. Their content, which amassed over 2 million subscribers, frequently walked the fine line between discipline and outright cruelty. YouTube ultimately shut down the channel after Franke's arrest. Kevin Franke was not charged in connection with the abuse. Jodi Hildebrandt, Franke's business partner and a former therapist, only made things worse. The founder of the so-called "ConneXions" program, a religious-based self-help movement, Hildebrandt reportedly encouraged extreme parenting methods, preying on vulnerabilities within the Mormon community. According to a therapist featured in the docuseries, Hildebrandt "was excellent at exploiting Mormon anxiety." Her influence, combined with Franke's already dangerous beliefs, created a toxic and violent environment for the children trapped in their care. Both Franke and Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse. Their sentences—ranging from four to 30 years—will be decided by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole. At her sentencing, Franke broke down in tears, addressing her children directly. "I will never stop crying for hurting your tender souls," she said. But the damage was already done. Kevin Franke Speaks Out on Ex-Wife Ruby Franke's Crimes: ‘I Have Regrets' Kevin Franke, the estranged husband of disgraced parenting influencer Ruby Franke, is breaking his silence following her conviction for child abuse. In a new interview, he admitted that he trusted his wife and her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, despite mounting concerns about their extreme parenting methods. “The bottom line is: I was choosing to trust a licensed professional mental health counselor and my wife, and they gave some terrible counsel,” Franke told Good Morning America. “And I have regrets. And I wish I hadn't done those things.” Ruby Franke, 43, was once a celebrated mommy blogger with over 2.5 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, 8Passengers. Alongside Hildebrandt, she later founded ConneXions Classrooms, a parenting and lifestyle brand that offered paid counseling sessions and retreats. What was once a lucrative online business ultimately unraveled into a criminal case when authorities discovered two of Franke's children malnourished and restrained in Hildebrandt's home. The case shocked audiences familiar with Franke's strict parenting style, which had already raised red flags. In one of her earlier 8Passengers videos, her eldest son Chad casually revealed that he had been forced to sleep on a beanbag for seven months as punishment. After losing sponsors and facing backlash, Franke shifted to working with Hildebrandt, who encouraged even harsher parenting methods. In one resurfaced video from ConneXions Classrooms, Franke told parents, “If your child comes to you on fire, you don't pat them on the head and say, ‘It's OK, I'll help you.' No, you beat them, and you kick them, and you hit them with a rod.” Kevin Franke, a professor and father of six, said he was unaware of the extent of the abuse but now acknowledges that his wife's actions were dangerous. He last saw his children more than a year before Ruby's arrest in August 2023. The abuse allegations surfaced when Franke's 12-year-old son escaped from Hildebrandt's $5.3 million home in Ivins, Utah. The child, severely malnourished and bound with duct tape, ran to a neighbor for help, prompting an immediate police response. Authorities discovered another one of Franke's children, a 9-year-old girl, in similarly horrific condition. The case revealed years of disturbing practices, with Franke's eldest daughter, Shari, previously attempting to alert child services about the abuse. Both Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse and were sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison. Despite the horror of the case, Kevin Franke admitted that his feelings for Ruby are complicated. “I don't think I'll ever stop loving her,” he said. “Does that mean that I want to let her back into my life? Let her back into my kids' lives? Absolutely not.” Kevin and his son Chad are now speaking out ahead of the release of Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke, a new documentary detailing Ruby's rise and fall. The documentary includes never-before-seen clips of Franke's aggressive outbursts, painting a stark contrast to the polished image she portrayed online. Reflecting on the dangers of social media, Kevin Franke is now urging parents to reconsider exposing their families to the public eye. “There is real danger when you place yourself, or your family, your children, out onto public social media,” he warned. The case has ignited broader discussions about parenting influencers, the ethics of monetizing family life, and the potential dangers of unregulated online advice. While Franke and Hildebrandt marketed their content as guidance for struggling parents, their convictions highlight the dark side of influencer culture, where financial incentives can overshadow child welfare. #KevinFranke #RubyFranke #JodiHildebrandt #TrueCrime #8Passengers #ConneXions #ParentingScandal Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Kevin Franke, the estranged husband of disgraced parenting influencer Ruby Franke, is breaking his silence following her conviction for child abuse. The husband and children of Ruby Franke, the disgraced YouTube mom now serving time for child abuse, are breaking their silence in Devil in the Family, a new three-part Hulu documentary. The series, premiering February 27, gives a raw and emotional look at the unraveling of the Franke family as Kevin Franke and their children share their side of the story. A newly released trailer offers a glimpse into the series, showing Kevin Franke grappling with his role in what happened. He opens up about life inside their Utah home and the impact of allowing therapist Jodi Hildebrandt to move in—a decision that ultimately led to the severe mistreatment of his children. “It eats me alive,” Kevin says in the trailer, reflecting on his failure to intervene as the abuse escalated. The emotional confession highlights the deep regret and pain he now carries. Ruby Franke, known for her now-infamous 8 Passengers YouTube channel, was arrested in August 2023 alongside Hildebrandt after one of her malnourished children escaped and begged a neighbor for help. Authorities discovered shocking conditions, leading to charges of aggravated child abuse. Both women pleaded guilty and were sentenced to significant prison time. Throughout Devil in the Family, Kevin Franke details how Hildebrandt's influence over Ruby played a pivotal role in the family's downfall. Hildebrandt, who ran a controversial counseling organization called ConneXions, allegedly convinced Ruby to take extreme disciplinary measures, isolating the children and subjecting them to inhumane punishments. “I should have seen it. I should have stopped it,” Kevin admits in the series. His statements mark the first time he has spoken publicly about the case since his wife's conviction. The Franke children, who have largely stayed out of the public eye since their mother's arrest, also share their painful experiences in the documentary. Their testimonies reveal the emotional and physical toll of their mother's strict parenting and the manipulative tactics used by Hildebrandt. The docuseries aims to unpack how a once-celebrated family vlogger, who built a massive following by promoting strict parenting, became a convicted abuser. It also sheds light on the dangers of cult-like ideologies and the devastating impact they can have on families. Produced by ABC News Studios, Devil in the Family joins a growing list of true-crime documentaries exploring the dark side of family influencers. The series promises to be an eye-opening account of control, manipulation, and the long road to healing for those affected. Unmasking Ruby Franke FBI Expert Robin Dreeke Breaks Down Shari Franke Memoir Was family vlogging ever really about family—or was it just another way to cash in on childhood innocence? Ruby Franke, once the face of the popular YouTube channel Eight Passengers, crafted a wholesome image of family life—one that, according to her daughter, Sherry Franke, was a carefully curated front hiding something far darker. In her new memoir, The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Quest for Freedom, Sherry pulls back the curtain on the alleged abuse and control that shaped her upbringing, exposing the chilling reality behind the perfectly edited videos. But Ruby wasn't operating alone. Her husband, Kevin Franke, played his own role—one that raises serious questions about willful ignorance and blind loyalty. How does a father just step away from his family under the guise of “self-improvement” while another woman steps in to assume control? And what does it say when his return to reality comes with zero accountability? Retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke joins the discussion, breaking down the psychological manipulation at play and the disturbing influence of Jodi Hildebrandt, the so-called therapist who only amplified Ruby's obsession with control. As more former child influencers come forward about their experiences, the question remains—how many more kids are still trapped in this modern-day nightmare of parental exploitation disguised as entertainment? #TrueCrime #RubyFranke #EightPassengers #FamilyVlogging #KevinFranke #CultMentality #ChildExploitation Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
