Kevin Rempel is a 2013 World Champion and 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey with an incredible story of overcoming a tremendous amount of adversity.   After a freestyle motocross accident left Kevin an incomplete paraplegic at the age of 23, he was told by doctors he would likely never walk again.   Ironically enough, Kevin's father, Gerry, was also paralyzed just four years earlier after falling from a tree while deer hunting, rendering him a complete paraplegic.   Unfortunately, Gerry soon after took his own life, and though Kevin considered doing the same thing, he knew that he must take control over his mindset and chose a different path.   Today, Kevin delivers keynote and workshops to corporate audiences helping adopt what he calls, The Hero Mindset, by focusing on small things that make a big difference to become a hero in your own story.   Additionally, Kevin is also a mindset coach who, using a framework called The Hero Mindset Blueprint, helps people with disabilities navigate their career and life transitions.   Kevin is the author of Still Standing: When You Have Every Reason to Give Up, Keep Going, and his story has been featured around the world in media such as CBC, TSN, and BBC Sport. During our conversation, Kevin reveals how he overcame suicidal ideation of his own and not only set himself on a more positive path but one that led to him regaining the ability to walk and representing Canada on the world's stage at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics. Kevin's story begins with a passion for motocross, fueled by the adrenaline of performing gravity-defying stunts. But life took a dramatic turn when a catastrophic accident left him paralyzed. In a split second, Kevin had to decide between two grim outcomes: staying on his bike and risking a broken neck or jumping off and potentially breaking his legs. He chose the latter, leading to a life-altering injury that would test his resilience and spirit.   As fate would have it, Kevin wasn't new to the world of spinal injuries. Just a few years earlier, his father had suffered a similar accident, leaving him paralyzed. The irony of both father and son facing such challenges is not lost on Kevin, who candidly shares the emotional and physical toll it took on his family. His mother, a beacon of resilience, navigated the turbulent waters of having both her husband and son in wheelchairs.   Kevin's recovery journey is a testament to human spirit and determination. From wiggling his first toe six weeks after the accident to walking and riding again within a year, his path was anything but easy. Along the way, he discovered a new passion in Paralympic sledge hockey, eventually earning a bronze medal in Sochi. This experience led him to a new calling: sharing his story and inspiring others through public speaking.   In his keynote presentations and coaching program, Kevin delves into what he calls the "Hero Mindset." He offers invaluable insights into navigating life's transitions, whether due to disability, career changes, or personal challenges. His message is clear: acceptance doesn't mean giving up; it's the first step toward a fulfilling life.   Kevin's humor and candidness make his story relatable and engaging. From humorous anecdotes about crop-dusting VIP audiences to the heartwarming tales of his current life with his girlfriend and her two children, Kevin's narrative is a rollercoaster of emotions and life lessons.   Join us for this compelling episode of Destiny is Debatable and discover how you, too, can adopt the Hero Mindset to overcome life's obstacles and build the life you want.   Don't wait—tune in now and start your journey toward a resilient and fulfilling life!

Kevin Rempel, 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey, is today's guest. Listen in as Kevin shares his incredible life story and the wisdom he's gained. Kevin was paralyzed in a Motocross accident when he was 23. He was never supposed to walk again, but, as he says, he made it to his feet to walk again with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work. Four years earlier, his father, was paralyzed in a hunting accident. His father severed his spinal cord, making it impossible for him to walk again. Kevin thought that he and his father would draw closer together after his accident; instead, it drove them further apart. Kevin came to understand that what was happening was a negative love relationship with his father. This discovery prompted him to attend and complete the Hoffman Process. Driven to be different from his father, Kevin worked hard in his drive to walk again. It ultimately took him four years to fully stand and walk on his own, day in and day out. You'll hear a lot of love, understanding, and wisdom in Kevin's story about his father. He shares how his attitude toward and understanding of his father changed after the Process. Kevin's transformation comes from seeing that his father was a good Dad, yet he had patterns. It is a testament to Bob Hoffman's words, "Everyone is guilty, no one is to blame." Kevin realized his second chance at life wasn't from learning to walk again. Instead, his second chance came when he learned to love himself and live as someone who truly loves himself. Discover more about Kevin Rempel: Kevin Rempel is a 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey. After being paralyzed at the age of 23, Kevin not only learned how to walk again, but overcame the mental battle of both depression and living with a disability to rebuild his life, and eventually reach the Paralympic podium in sledge hockey. Kevin is an expert in change management, mental health, and resilience, delivering his inspirational message about adopting The Hero Mindset, where you focus on small things that make a big difference to help you too, become a hero in your own story. Kevin is the author of, Still Standing: When You Have Every Reason To Give Up, Keep Going. Are you ready to become the hero of your own story? Our guest became paralyzed after having a motocross accident. His dad had also become disabled and later took his own life. But none of these stopped him from turning his life around for the better. He’s a Paralympian and through very hard work he became a world champion. He’s also now an author and a speaker, and he shared with us how accepting our own responsibility can help us turn our lives around and become the hero of our own story. This is my amazing conversation with Kevin Rempel. He is a 2013 World Champion and 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey who has an incredible story of overcoming a tremendous amount of adversity. Paralyzed after a motocross crash in 2006, Kevin had to face insurmountable odds while learning to walk again at the age of 23. Adding to this, Kevin had to deal with his father, Gerry, who also was living in a wheelchair. While deer hunting, Gerry fell from a tree leaving him a complete paraplegic one year from retirement. Unfortunately Gerry couldn’t deal with living with his circumstances and took his own life in July 2007. That following year, “Remps” as he likes to be called by his friends, found sledge hockey and set his sights on making Team Canada and playing in the Paralympics. Since then he has travelled the world, inspired thousands of people, and has been featured around the world in media such as CBC, TSN, and BBC Sport. Today, Kevin is focused on helping grow the sport of sledge hockey through his team building program, The Sledge Hockey Experience, and passionately taking the stage, either live or virtually, inspiring audiences with The Hero Mindset Keynote and coaching leaders using The Resilience Toolbox. Kevin has learned from his father that when you have every reason to give up, you need to keep going. We can all learn to be the hero of our own story but it's up to us to decide what path we will take. A special podcast today supporting Bell Let's Talk Day on January 30th. Breaking the stigma of mental health is very important as the only way you will know somebody is hurting inside is by listening and talking and the hardest part is sharing. On the show today I have Kevin Rempel from Sledge Hockey Experience and indie pro wrestler Mark Wheeler sharing their thoughts on dealing with mental health issues and how they deal with being in the public eye. Please share the hashtag BellLetsTalk today and let's break the stigma.

Kevin Rempel is a 2014 Paralympic Bronze medalist, author of the book ‘Still Standing: When You Have Every Reason to Give Up, Keep Going’, and founder of the Sledge Hockey Experience. Kevin has an incredible story that has captivated audiences across Canada. He firmly believes that the greater the challenges you face, the greater your story will be, and as you discover the mindset that enables you to unlock your unknown greatness you begin to rewrite your script and be the hero of your own movie. Back in the early 2000s Kevin was a motocross rider with a dream of competing at the X-Games. On a beautiful day in July in 2006 he jumped with his bike high through the air, lost control over his moto bike, crashed and severely injured his spinal cord, which left him an incomplete paraplegic. Now, sitting in a wheelchair Kevin was desperate to take responsibility for his own life and prove his doctors wrong, who told him that he will never be able to walk again. Kevin not only regained his ability to walk – and ride a moto bike again – he also started playing wheelchair basketball and sledge hockey, and finally competing at the 2014 Paralympic Games.  In this episode, Kevin talks about his experiences after his accident, his mental health problems and suicidal thoughts, how he took responsibility and ownership of his life and his situation, bad recommendations he heard in the hospital, and what gratitude means to him today. I learned a lot from Kevin and how he approaches his life after being knocked down quite a few times.

Kevin Rempel is a 2013 World Champion and 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey who has an incredible story of overcoming a tremendous amount of adversity. Paralyzed after a motocross crash in 2006, Kevin had to face unsurmountable odds while learning to walk again at the age of 23. Adding to this, Kevin had to deal with his father, Gerry, who also was living in a wheelchair. While deer hunting, Gerry fell from a tree leaving him a complete paraplegic one year from retirement. Unfortunately Gerry couldn't deal with living with his circumstances and took his own life in July 2007. That following year, “Remps” as he likes to be called by his friends, found sledge hockey and set his sights on making Team Canada and playing in the Paralympics. Since then he has travelled the world, inspired thousands of people, and has published his autobiography titled "Still Standing - When You Have Every Reason To Give Up, Keep Going" Kevin's story has been featured around the world on TSN, BBC Sport, CBC and CTV. To this day Kevin still loves to ride his motorcycle and is focused on helping grow the sport of sledge hockey through his newest venture, the Sledge Hockey Experience.   Find out more about Kevin Here: http://kevinrempel.com Today's Sponsors: Hockey Tracker App:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hockeytracker/id1297971760?mt=8&at=1010l5Qq&ct=hptp Hockey Training: https://www.hockeytraining.com Downhill Skating System: To learn more about the Downhill Skating movement that is going on and the downhill skating system course, go to: train2point0.com/hockeyprotraining And for listeners of the podcast, you can get 10% off when you use the code hockeyprotraining10. Ep. 47 - Kevin Rempel has one of the biggest hearts that I have witnessed since beginning the Creating Space Movement. I have watched as he has battled with fear and tried to get past the himself in his entrepreneurial pursuits. However, this is only half of his story. Just a few short years ago, Kevin was left paralyzed from the waist down after a horrific MotoX accident. Only two years after watching his father become paralyzed from a fall from a tree stand during a hunting excursion. This incredible story is one worth enjoying. We've all faced hard time in our lives. Times when we just wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out. But the tough times in our lives are the moments that build our true character. They show how resilient we truly are and how much we are capable of enduring. Paralympian, motivational speaker and author, Kevin Rempel, has definitely endured his fair share of hard times. From overcoming a life-changing accident that left him unable to walk at 23, to struggling with addiction, depression and personal tragedy. Kevin is a true example of what it looks like to get back up when life knocks you down. We talk about what got him through all those hard times; how he's stayed so resilient, when most of us probably would have given up; how he deals with his own depression bouts; his support systems; making the Paralympic sledge hockey team and his new entrepreneurial journey. We don't scratch the surface in this interview - and he doesn't sugar coat the hard times. This episode is focused on grit, perseverance and pure determination. If you want to hear what it truly takes to come out stronger after enduring some of the worst experiences, then you won't want to miss this episode!
