Tracy Bonifacio, Georgetown, Ontario Dutch tulip prices that logic defied. An economic or investment bubble is created by a surge in asset prices, driven by market exuberance and little regard for intrinsic value or investment fundamentals. The Dutch tulip bubble is generally considered to be the first recorded asset bubble and one of the most famous in history. Contract prices for certain bulbs took off in 1634, before collapsing in February 1637. Life in a world that denies the outside. It is among the most quoted lines from Shakespeare, because of its sing-song rhythm and rhyme. Globule of gross gooey gum gasified. William Friedkin's film Sorcerer (1977) has been subject to a major re-evaluation in the last decade. A dark re-imagining of the French Director H.G. Clouzot's Le Salaire de la Peur (The Wages of Fear) (1953) (based on George Arnaud's novel); the film was a major critical and commercial failure on its initial release. Friedkin's work was castigated as an example of directorial hubris as it was a notoriously difficult production which went wildly over-budget. It was viewed at the time as the end of New Hollywood. However, within recent years, the film has emerged in the popular and scholarly consciousness from enjoying a minor, cult status to becoming subject to a full-blown critical reconsideration in which it has been praised a major work by a key American filmmaker.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. Marlborough residents could be in for an expensive few years, with millions more needed for road repairs than first thought. Fixing the flood damaged transport system is expected to cost $74 million more, totalling $234 million. Marlborough District Council Chief Executive Mark Wheeler told Kate Hawkesby that their cost estimates were cautious but reflect the current reality. He says construction cost, inflation, and contractor shortages have also added to the expense. Wheeler says rates are expected to rise by 10%, assuming Waka Kotahi provides financial assistance. While it's hard to have missed the buzz that's been building around blockchain over the last five years, it's easy to be confused and overwhelmed by its applications. With a background in planning, Wheeler is passionate about community engagement and making open data accessible to the citizens of Philly. I asked in my Facebook group, The Wedding Vendors Community, “What do you consider yourself to be an expert at?”We had so many good and funny answers.Of course many of these skills are being monetized in their respective businesses. The thing about thinking outside the box a little, is that all of these skills can be monetized into passive income.Either through a membership or subscription based aspect, or by selling templates, or even having a product or being an affiliate for a product that aligns with it, or in many other ways that we can discuss more in depth on a future episode. As you can see, just taking one simple thing that you're an expert in, whether it's your current business or not, can expand into being so much more.If you're listening to this and thinking that you're not an expert in anything, that's just not true. You're an expert at something, we all are.Even if you can think of something tiny, like the “making macaroni and cheese” example, that can be the most effective!I know someone who has built a very lucrative and huge membership about making candy apples, same kind of concept. There are about a million ways to make macaroni and cheese that you could teach about, and seriously who doesn't love mac and cheese?I mean, this topic alone could go on and on, and the audience size has crazy big potential. There's so many content possibilities:Noodle variations, best cheeses to use, ways to top it, add-in varieties, gluten free options, vegan options, low carb options, cooking techniques, ways to include macaroni and cheese into creative other foods, see how one little thing can go on and on and on?!?!?I mean, it could even be something you teach to an every day consumer, as in what's for dinner, or to a business, as in adding it to your catering menu. I did a little research and the person who commented that she's an expert at making macaroni and cheese is a photographer.See how that works? It's so much fun and there's seriously so much revenue to be generated from it.This mac and cheese example could be a membership with a community, a blog that has partnerships with products that pay a commission, and even sponsor posts that use their products, the possibilities are literally endless when you think about it.Brandon Hosley is in our mastermind group, and he's the one who mentioned that one of the things he's an expert at men's clothing.Brandon makes custom suits. First of all, that's amazing.Second of all, it's a topic that people fascinated about.I spoke at Colleen & Mark Wheeler's WE Summit last fall, and so did Kevin Bailey, with A Smith Clothiers. He spoke about suit etiquette. It was fascinating! It's a topic that you might not think is, but he had the longest and most engaging and interesting Q&A.Questions about how to button and unbutton a jacket when standing, sitting, and I don't even know when else the etiquette calls for, but there's a reason for each of them... and so many more!Like I said in the last episode, my friend Stu McLaren says, “You don't have to get it right, you just have to get it going.”This really means just start, because analysis paralysis and perfectionism is a very real thing that keeps us from getting it going. Here's your hot tip/action item:Think about one thing about your business that you could monetize in a passive andDo you wish you could fill your calendar faster and easier? It's always easy to do on your own, so I've created a free challenge for you, where we'll walk through it together. The challenge starts on September 21, when you sign up right now you'll get an action item that will have you starting with the right foundation!Just go to www.letsbookclients.com/referralschallenge to sign up today!

Look, robots are cool, and we like to joke about whether a Terminator-style world takeover could happen, but they also have very practical value when used alongside workers, especially in warehousing, distribution & manufacturing. Mark Wheeler, Zebra's Director of Supply Chain Solutions, joins the show to discuss the current market for robots. What's holding supply chain leaders back from implementing augmentation technology? What happens to facilities that embrace this kind of automation? What kind of data and analytics can robots bring to enterprises? #VARValue – What type of customer benefits the most from robots? Any success stories? What's the future for robots in other industries? (Shoutout to Cory McClelland from Arrowhead Resellers for the topic and these questions!) A conversation with Mark Wheeler, Chief Information Officer, City of Philadelphia. Mark has been CIO for nearly 4 years where he oversees and sets vision for the City's IT and innovation department, with annual budgets: $112M operating, $35M grants, $28M capital. He has been an outspoke champion for smart cities. Mark has been an urban planner and chief geographic officer.
Mark Wheeler is a Lloyd's market person through and through. In this interview he even refers to himself as a “Lloyd's groupie” That's why it was great to meet him face to face in his London office within 100 metres of the Lloyd's building. We went deeply into what his new venture Mosaic is really all about. The vision is original and the plan is incredibly ambitious. Mosaic is trying to bring the core advantages of London syndication and very detailed specialty know-how much closer to clients around the world through localised international distribution. That's quite an undertaking. Listening back Mark is clearly in his element and our knockabout conversation is a testament to that. There were no taboo subjects. Mark's last words of the interview were “we've covered a lot of ground, it's thought-provoking and I really appreciate it” I agree with Mark. Let's see whether you do too. NOTES: Mark refers to “G and A” a couple of times. I'm pretty sure he is talking about general and administrative expenses – i.e. the part of the expense ratio that is in the control of the carrier, as opposed to acquisition costs, which are external. Faster Horses | A podcast about UI design, user experience, UX design, product and technology
Like every good superhero, they have an origin story. Faster Horses Podcast is no different, in this special episode we talk about the name of our podcast and that famous quote (somewhat dubiously) attributed to Henry Ford: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”What does this mean for user experience? We talk about the meaning behind the quote and why talking to your customers really matters. Also, find out if Patrick Stewart is really a shit and what's in Mark Wheeler's suitcase this week.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/FasterHorses)
James Gowers, Vice President of Strategy & Business Development, Perceptive Automata joins Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss developing human intuition for autonomous vehicles. The conversation begins with James talking about leading the Harvard Business School soccer team to two National Championships and what he learned about teamwork as an Army Ranger in the German Federal Armed Forces.Being part of a team, being a leader does not mean that you are autocratic. The more important way to lead is by influencing. Being a solid part of the team, carrying your weight, and leading by example. – James GowersWith a clear understanding of the rigors of leadership and a background in business from the Harvard Business School, Grayson asks James how he first joined the autonomous vehicle industry.James shares a wonderful story of how a friendship with Mark Wheeler, Co-Founder & CTO of DeepMap led to him joining the industry. After a successful run at DeepMap, James joined Perceptive Automata to help them successfully raise their Series A round.Getting from Series A to Series B is hard work. – James GowersPerceptive Automata is working on developing human-like intuition for autonomous vehicles as driving is inherently a social activity. James goes onto explain how Perceptive Automata is developing machine-learning models that can glance at a human and make powerful predictions on their intent to cross the road.Grayson asks James if the machine-learning models can learn situational awareness. For example, can the models learn if an individual is walking, wearing headphones to staring at their phones, and generally not paying attention to the surroundings? Yes. James explains how the models capture behavior.Perceptive Automata's approach to situational awareness caught the attention of Jim Adler, Founding Managing Director of Toyota AI Ventures which invested in the company's Series A $16m round.Along with the investment, Jim wrote a Medium blog post titled: “Predicting the World Around Autonomous Vehicles: Our Investment in Perceptive Automata” about “theory of mind” and why Toyota AI Ventures invested in Perceptive Automata. In the Medium blog post, Jim wrote the following:As I've said before, cars are “social.” They exist alongside other human-operated vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. When we're behind the wheel, we constantly survey the roads looking for clues to help predict what other people will do. Will that teenage skateboarder jaywalk? Will the minivan driver speed up as I try to make an unprotected left-hand turn? Who goes first at a four-way stop if we all arrive at the same time?People use a “theory of mind” to face those kind of split-second decisions all of the time. However, what comes relatively easily to us humans is incredibly difficult for autonomous vehicles. To improve safety for passengers and pedestrians alike, it is so important to have an intuitive self-driving system that is able to recognize, understand, and predict human behavior.– Jim Adler, Founding Managing Director of Toyota AI VenturesJim's Medium blog post summed up Perceptive Automata's approach to situational awareness brilliantly. This approach is critical for autonomous vehicles which are deployed in dense urban environments.Grayson and James go onto discuss prediction models and planning for scenarios such as a baseball game a European football game getting out. Creating a situation where large groups of individuals are pouring out on the sidewalks and the roadway.Autonomous vehicles have to learn and be prepared for all situations. From large groups of individuals at sporting events to first-responder vehicles traveling down the road at high-speeds. Driving is unpredictable and human intuition is a critical part of driving safely.Perceptive Automata is developing human intuition for autonomous vehicles to make the roads safer for both passengers in autonomous vehicles and pedestrians walking or riding bicycles.Humans have this unique ability to glance at pedestrians and make, immediate, effortless predictions about someone's intent based on social cues, body language, etc. – James GowersThis is exactly what Perceptive Automata is developing for autonomous vehicles. Grayson asks James if this technology could be deployed into the security industry to spot potential bad actors through behavior.James explains how this technology can be applied to the security industry and the potential applications. Not only can Perceptive Automata's technology be applied for security applications, but it can also be used in the retail business to predict intent. Will the consumer purchase this product? Do they like the color of the product? The potential applications for predicting human intuition are endless.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and James discuss the current state of the autonomous vehicle industry and what happens if and when Apple unveils an electric autonomous vehicle with an AR (Augmented Reality) app store.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
I met Mark a few years ago while filming my friends Ragnar Relay team (These are relay races done over a 24 hour period usually covering over 200 miles). He was the senior member of the 6-man ultra team (most teams have 12 members). One of Mark's experiences is particularly interesting to me. When his kids were younger, he and his wife took them sailing for 17 months straight. Before their voyage began He did not know how to sail, he didn't own a sailboat & no, he was not (is not) independently wealthy. His motto is "Live fearlessly into the dreams uniquely written upon your heart”. Years prior (before he had any kids) he make a 'bucket list' of things he wanted to do in life. On this list was to sail with his family for a year. Despite some major hurdles, they found a way to make it happen.Blog about Mark & Sue's Sailing adventure4wheelersailing.blogspot.comBook'Born to Run' by Christopher McdougallSocks & Soul Contact InformationFacebook- @socksandsoulpodcastOnline- socksandsoul.comEmail- host@socksandsoul.com

James Wu, CEO & Co-Founder of DeepMap joins Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss mega-trends, high-precision maps, and DeepMap's privacy-first approach to HD Maps.In this episode, Grayson and James discuss HD mapping and how HD maps are enabling all SAE Levels of autonomy. The conversation starts with James discussing why he founded DeepMap with Mark Wheeler in 2016 and the opportunity they saw in the market to increase HD map efficiency. The self-driving car problem is really hard. Hardest of all is driving without a map. It is an unsolved problem today. - James Wu, CEO & Co-Founder, DeepMapWithout a highly accurate map that updates in real-time, self-driving cars do not have a prior understanding of the environment. Self-driving cars use HD maps to increase efficiency and safety.A 2019 Harvard Business School Case Study on DeepMap detailed the following:Self-driving is not just a technology challenge. It's also an economic challenge, an infrastructure challenge, a public safety challenge, and a marketing challenge. This challenge is shared amongst every organization working on self-driving technology. DeepMap is betting big on the trend towards a self-driving future. We firmly believe mapping is critical for increased safety and reliability, at an affordable cost.James Wu, CEO & Co-Founder, DeepMap as featured in the Harvard Business School Case Study: DeepMap: Charting the Road Ahead For Autonomous Vehicles (2019)It is not just Harvard Business School that is taking notice, Wall Street is also paying attention. Goldman Sachs invested in DeepMap as part of its Series B round in 2019. James speaks about what it is like to have Goldman Sachs as an investor.[Goldman Sachs] is able to offer us a broader of the global market for autonomy. They also provide support for strategic partners. - James Wu, CEO & Co-Founder, DeepMapThe investment in DeepMap was not Goldman Sachs' first investment in autonomy. In 2007, Goldman invested $100 million in Mobileye. Mobileye was later acquired by Intel for $15.3 billion in 2017.DeepMap's mapping service provides a solution for all levels of autonomy. We must get L2 + right if we are going to reach Level 4 or 5. - James Wu, CEO & Co-Founder, DeepMapHD Maps enhance the safety and reliability of Level 2 autonomy for drivers around the world. The conversation then naturally evolves into how to create an HD map and how the map updates in real-time.Bringing the conversation back to the business of mapping, Grayson asks James why he made the decision to focus on privacy by allowing DeepMap's customers to own the data generated by DeepMap's HD mapping service.Closing out the conversation, Grayson asks James what the future holds for DeepMap.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
