The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 297 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block of episodes on the greatest players in the history of the Negro Leagues.Someone who could be considered the “Black Ty Cobb,” Cool Papa Bell was a generational ballplayer.Born in Mississippi, Bell was originally a successful knuckleball pitcher after he moved to St. Louis, Missouri in the 1920s. He began his career in the Negro Leagues as a pitcher, for the St. Louis Stars. However, his ridiculous base stealing speed, ability to hit, ability to learn how to switch-hit and fielding talent in the outfield led to a position change with monumental success. His career with the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays was incredible, and he was one of the league's brightest stars. He hit .337 for his career in the Negro Leagues, won two World Series and won eight batting titles. Moreover, his career overseas in Mexico saw him win a Triple Crown.Though he sadly never was able to play in Major League Baseball, his dominance and big play ability as a baserunner made him a legend. Then in 1974 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In this essential episode of "Courage to Advance," host Kim Bohr and global inclusion strategist Mason Donovan tackle a critical challenge facing today's leaders: maintaining organizational cohesion in an increasingly polarized world. Their timely conversation cuts through the noise to deliver practical wisdom on fostering productive workplaces where differences drive innovation rather than division.Through real-world examples, Mason and Kim explore how thoughtful leadership can transform potential friction points into opportunities for organizational growth. Drawing from personal experience and extensive client work, they examine why some corporate inclusion initiatives soar while others stumble, offering senior leaders a strategic framework for making decisions that align with mission and market realities. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Inclusion is for the entire organization, no matter if you are in the majority or the minority group. It is more than just policy, it is operating with a lens of inclusion in every aspect of the organization.Everybody has to own inclusion. While leaders may have a greater impact, they cannot be the only ones carrying the inclusion bucket.Politics in the US have put almost everything, every cultural decision, in either the red or the blue. Think about those connections, think about what may be said to others by those decisions, then make a decision. Hard, uncomfortable conversations will come up. Get ahead of them before they begin with policies and training. Kevin Rempel is a 2013 World Champion and 2014 Sochi Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey with an incredible story of overcoming a tremendous amount of adversity. After a freestyle motocross accident left Kevin an incomplete paraplegic at the age of 23, he was told by doctors he would likely never walk again. Ironically enough, Kevin's father, Gerry, was also paralyzed just four years earlier after falling from a tree while deer hunting, rendering him a complete paraplegic. Unfortunately, Gerry soon after took his own life, and though Kevin considered doing the same thing, he knew that he must take control over his mindset and chose a different path. Today, Kevin delivers keynote and workshops to corporate audiences helping adopt what he calls, The Hero Mindset, by focusing on small things that make a big difference to become a hero in your own story. Additionally, Kevin is also a mindset coach who, using a framework called The Hero Mindset Blueprint, helps people with disabilities navigate their career and life transitions.
