5 Killer Sales Moves You Can Learn From An Entrepreneur

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

Here's a hard truth most salespeople never hear: The most dangerous thing you can do is think like an employee. On this week's episode of the Sales Gravy Podcast, business consultant for entrepreneurs David Neagle says: “You've got to see yourself above the place that you actually want to accomplish.” The highest-earning reps? They think like owners. They take responsibility for their number, their mindset, and their mission. They don't wait for leads to be handed to them or settle for “good enough.” They build a pipeline like a business, because it is.  So whether you run a company or just run your territory, these lessons from a successful entrepreneur will harden your mindset and help you sell with more purpose, more urgency, and more grit. Making Money Isn't Hard. You need to come around to a simple idea: Making money isn't the hard part. Getting over your mental baggage about making money is infinitely more difficult. Most salespeople riding the feast-or-famine rollercoaster find themselves desperate more often than not. When that happens, they unconsciously sabotage themselves. They discount too quickly, hesitate to ask for the sale, or talk themselves out of big goals. Here's the truth: Money is everywhere, and opportunity is endless. But if you believe sales is a grind and success is for “those people,” you'll work three times harder for half the reward. Don't undersell yourself. Entrepreneurs don't apologize for making money—they design their lives around it. If you want to earn like a business owner, stop treating money like a taboo topic. Start treating it like a scoreboard you want to climb. Stop Caring What People Think (Especially About You Winning) The moment you start succeeding—wildly succeeding—is the moment people will have opinions about it. You close a big deal or hit the top of the leaderboard? Somebody will whisper. Someone else will be resentful. That's not your problem. It's theirs. You'll never hit your peak if you can't stomach a little hate from the nay-sayers. Entrepreneurs learn early that approval won't pay your bills. If you want to win in sales, stop seeking validation from people who aren't playing game at your level. You can't serve your buyer and care what others think at the same time. Choose your future over fitting in. Believe You're Worth the Win Most reps think their biggest problem is weak leads or tight markets. It's not. It's that they don't believe they're worthy of success. They don't think they deserve the close, the commission, or the praise. Instead of swinging for the fences or building consistency, they settle for mediocre wins some of the time. Instead of dealing with confidence, they let insecurity take over. Business owners don't have that luxury. Their livelihood depends on selling themselves—and believing in what they offer. The same should go for you. When you believe you're worth the success, your tone changes. Your body language shifts. Your presence becomes undeniable—and buyers feel it. Push past doubt by honing your skills through practice and reviewing past successes. You deserve everything you've worked hard to gain. Sales Isn't About Getting—It's About Giving A lot of people treat sales like they're trying to take something. That's why they feel pushy, needy, or “icky.” But the best sellers think like business owners—and owners know they're in the business of solving problems. They're giving value, outcomes, and transformation. If your mindset is “I need to get this deal,” your buyer will feel that. But if you shift to “I've got something that can truly help them,” everything changes. You show up with confidence, not desperation; with curiosity, not pressure. Sales isn't just hunting. It's serving. And your commission is just the reward for solving someone else's problem. Start thinking like a consultative seller. Listen closely to your prospect's needs and position yourself as a trusted advisor who...

In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, co-hosts Jim and Tyson welcome back David Neagle, a bestselling author and founder of a global consulting company. The discussion centers on fostering a culture of success within law firms. For David, fostering a culture of success within law firms involves a mixture of different things. One of these things is for those in the legal field to understand that there are no mistakes, only lessons. Focusing on mistakes can make employees feel guilt and shame for doing something wrong. But, if a mistake is turned into a lesson, people are more likely to be open and trustworthy with what they do. Thus truly leads to a healthy and successful business. The internal voice of a business owner can affect the culture of a firm. These voices can be fear or the ideas from friends and family. It is important to separate those voices to understand what you want for yourself and your business. Other people's ideas can control how you think and view your success and can drive a wedge between you and success. David suggests to determine what it is that you want and make a decision to follow the voice that will get you there.Take a listen to learn more from David Neagle!Jim's Hack: Listen to the speech called “The Day You Turn Your Life Around” by Jim Rohn to help get your mindset right.David Tip: Read Netflix CEO Reed Hastings' book, which delves into how to step into your genius.Tyson's Tip: Spot check core values with your team.5:07 The importance of embracing mistakes to foster a successful law firm culture5:34 The need for law firm leaders to view mistakes as opportunities for learning9:41 The process of shifting firm culture 15:47 How individuals' internal voices affect their mindset and firm cultureConnect with David:WebsitePodcast InstagramFacebook Linkedin Youtube Tune in to today's episode and checkout the full show notes here.

“The victim mindset dilutes the human potential. By not accepting personal responsibility for our circumstances, we greatly reduce our power to change them.” – Steve Maraboli . I all too often hear my clients say things like, “I have no choice with X situation, so I just put my head down and keep working.” This always makes me pause because I have learned that we always have a choice, yet sometimes it may feel like we are victims of our circumstances or situations.  The choices before us may not be easy to see, understand, or navigate, but there is always a choice because we are in control of our own lives, businesses, or careers.  My guest this week is back for a second time, and we are going to explore the notion of how to move from victim to victor.   YouTube: https://youtu.be/nHTMk5ze3vo   About David Neagle:   David is a speaker, best-selling author, founder of the multimillion-dollar global consulting company Life Is Now, Inc., and host of the Business Daily News-ranked podcast The Successful Mind.  Being in the personal and professional development industry for more than 20 years, David has helped tens of thousands of students from across the globe gain confidence and find the right mindset needed to increase their revenue, turning their endeavors into seven- and eight-figure ventures.   How to Get In Touch With David Neagle:   Previous Enlightenment of Change (Episode 329):  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/enlightenment-of-change/id1313299091?i=1000649679058 Website:  https://www.lifeisnowinc.com/ Email:  tia@davidneagle.com Podcast:  The Successful Mind Podcast   Stalk me online! Kevin Rempel, 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey, is today's guest. Listen in as Kevin shares his incredible life story and the wisdom he's gained. Kevin was paralyzed in a Motocross accident when he was 23. He was never supposed to walk again, but, as he says, he made it to his feet to walk again with a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work. Four years earlier, his father, was paralyzed in a hunting accident. His father severed his spinal cord, making it impossible for him to walk again. Kevin thought that he and his father would draw closer together after his accident; instead, it drove them further apart. Kevin came to understand that what was happening was a negative love relationship with his father. This discovery prompted him to attend and complete the Hoffman Process. Driven to be different from his father, Kevin worked hard in his drive to walk again. It ultimately took him four years to fully stand and walk on his own, day in and day out. You'll hear a lot of love, understanding, and wisdom in Kevin's story about his father. He shares how his attitude toward and understanding of his father changed after the Process. Kevin's transformation comes from seeing that his father was a good Dad, yet he had patterns. It is a testament to Bob Hoffman's words, "Everyone is guilty, no one is to blame." Kevin realized his second chance at life wasn't from learning to walk again. Instead, his second chance came when he learned to love himself and live as someone who truly loves himself. Discover more about Kevin Rempel: Kevin Rempel is a 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey. After being paralyzed at the age of 23, Kevin not only learned how to walk again, but overcame the mental battle of both depression and living with a disability to rebuild his life, and eventually reach the Paralympic podium in sledge hockey. Kevin is an expert in change management, mental health, and resilience, delivering his inspirational message about adopting The Hero Mindset, where you focus on small things that make a big difference to help you too, become a hero in your own story. Ask them what they're looking for. Know what they need and offer to do something for them first at no cost. This is how you build relationships and how you can expand your network. (34:58) David Neagle You have to be clear on what you want. If you are uncertain, you need to go back and ask yourself who you really are and what you want to do with your life. You need to learn to make mistakes. The more you get to know yourself, the more you find your purpose.    (39:00) Keving Harrington If you are in business, you need to learn how to accept failure. What you need to do is learn how to fail fast and fail cheap. Don't hold onto something so tight. You always need to be ready to move forward when something fails. You learn from it and get over it and then you can move on quicker.    (43:07) Mark Timm The one thing you can do if you want to change your trajectory, is to get the right mentors. No one's meant to do business alone. You need coaches, you need help. Talk to people who are already in the field. Ask for advice and get their insight on how to be successful. Get a mentor.    Tags: @mikemcderment  @jackleematthews  @realjerryfetta   @josh.elledge  @david_p_neagle  @realkevinharrington  @themarktimm

Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Bill Hybels  “We all have strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots.  In fact, an average person has 3.4 blind spots.” Recently, I spoke with my brother-in-law, and I shared that as I age, I feel like I know less and less and have more blind spots.  I asked him if he thought becoming less intelligent over time was possible.  We both laughed and decided that with age comes wisdom, which allows us to see that we have many blind spots, and by being curious, we can uncover and shine a light on those blind spots to continue to learn and grow.  My final thought is that I must have a ton of wisdom because I feel like I know less and less daily…lol.    YouTube: https://youtu.be/a1sb41By3LM   About David Neagle: David is a speaker, best-selling author, founder of the multimillion-dollar global consulting company Life Is Now, Inc., and host of the Business Daily News ranked podcast - The Successful Mind. Steph Tuss is the CEO of multimillion-dollar global consulting company Life Is Now, Inc., and frequent stand-in cohost of Business Daily News' top-ranked podcast - The Successful Mind. Steph discovered her love for teaching at a young age, beginning her career as an educator. It was during this time that her firstborn child was facing health difficulties, and she decided to completely overhaul their diets to figure out the root cause. She went back to school to pursue a Master's Degree in Holistic Nutrition and went on to open a practice to help families who faced similar challenges. Fast forward a few years, Steph hired David Neagle and his team at Life Is Now, Inc., as her health practice's business coach. As she continued to scale her business, her love for entrepreneurship and growing businesses shined through. She sold her business at the age of 33 and joined Life Is Now, Inc. as the Director of Sales in 2009 before taking on the CEO role less than a decade later in 2016. In her six years at the helm of the company, Steph has become the primary driver behind all of Life Is Now's marketing, business development and brilliant team culture. As a recent empty-nester, she lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband and cattle dog, Jack. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling the country in her Airstream. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Steph Became a Leader As a child, Steph was always told to quit being bossy, which caused her to fly under the radar in grade school, but when she went to college, she became a teacher because it was an acceptable way to be a leader  In 2001, Steph had her first child, who had a lot of health issues - after extensive research, Steph discovered she was suffering from food sensitivities and wanted to teach and share what she discovered with other people Steph went back to school and got her master's degree in holistic nutrition, and began to build her business which grew very quickly The business started to plateau, so Steph hired David as a business coach, who is now her business partner - though his coaching Steph fell more in love with business building and mindset work than with nutrition After 3 years, Steph sold her business to work with David at Life is Now, where she started in sales and is now the CEO Steph talks about what led her to seek out a business coach to help her see what she needed to change to grow her business  How Steph said yes to every opportunity within Life is Now so she could learn all parts of the business and become a part of the leadership After the current CEO left, Steph took on the responsibilities of the CEO without her role changing - one day, she walked into David's office and told him he needed to make her the CEO, and he did  Now, Steph isn't just the CEO; she is also a partner in Life is Now    Establishing Good Culture + Team Synergy  One of the first big changes Steph made as CEO was establishing psychological safety because of the previous CEO, people were scared to share their opinions As a CEO, you have to model what you want to see other people do; that means being transparent about what you're learning, telling them when you don't feel confident, sharing when you make mistakes, and celebrating the good Steph would host workshops on how to give to receive feedback to get people comfortable with conflict because businesses are here to solve problems, and you need people to share their ideas to come up with solutions If you want to know more about psychological safety, which is the most important when it comes to developing culture, Steph recommends the book, The Fearless Organization by Amy Edmondson Next, Steph shares that they established a clear vision by taking the team through a vision process that's outlined in Cameron Herold's book, Vivid Vision When you follow this vision process, Steph says you'll usually hit your vision goals within one or two years because it creates focus synergy for your team  Big lessons Steph has learned are that mistakes are required and to not take results personally   By creating a visionary leadership assessment, Steph was able to see that there are 4 different types of leaders: Catalyst, Charismatic, Limitless, and Legacy Leaders  Go to lifeisnowinc.com, and you can find their visionary leadership assessment  Steph talks about the rebrand they recently went through that switched the company from being about a person to being about their ideal client  How a lot of business owners get stuck doing tasks that shouldn't be on their plate because they aren't good at delegating  Check out the Life is Now Website and connect with Steph on Instagram for lots of free industry and business resources   Links mentioned: Life Is Now Inc. "What would happen if your annual income instantly became your monthly income?"  -Bob ProctorWhat if you figured out how to make a quantum leap? Many people who start a business have a middle-class mindset, which can limit their success. This mindset is often focused on security, stability, and steady income, which can lead to a risk-averse approach to running a business. However, entrepreneurship requires a different way of thinking and acting. You can't simply approach a business like it's a job, where you show up, put in your hours, and collect a paycheck. Instead, you need to take calculated risks, make strategic decisions, and constantly innovate to stay ahead of the competition. This means being willing to invest time, money, and effort into your business without immediate rewards, and having the resilience and persistence to push through setbacks and failures. By recognizing the limitations of a middle-class mindset and adopting an entrepreneurial mindset, you can set yourself up for success in your business endeavors.Tune in to learn the 3 mindsets that create a successful business. In this podcast episode, David Neagle offers insights into his personal journey of success in both business and personal growth. Today, my guest is Steph Tuss. Steph is the CEO of a company called Light Is Now, a consulting company that works with small firms and businesses, including law firms, to help them grow, prosper, and to give time back to those who are leading those endeavors to live their best life. We had her business partner, David Neagle, on last year and I wanted to have Steph on because she has more of the hands-on, tactical role in their company, whereas David is the more visionary individual, and so I wanted to kind of complete the picture with her. She gives some great tips and you will get some great takeaways. In this episode, Neil and Steph discuss:Understanding why you don't do the things you know you need to do. Utilizing an integrator in your business to focus on your areas of genius. Putting dissatisfaction into action. Working with your team not controlling and micromanaging. Key Takeaways:There are two parts to change: awareness and applying new behaviors. If you don't hire the right people, it will be harder for your business to succeed. Your team is only as good as your worst player. Set your team up for success from the beginning. Until you have the right things in your business, you don't know if you are stifling your A-Players. Be willing to pay for one person who can do the jobs you need done well, rather than spending less on multiple people who will do it less well. "You've got to start employing new behaviors because that's the only way that change actually occurs. If you just have the awareness, nothing changes, nothing happens. You have to show up differently, which means you have to act differently." — Steph TussEpisode References: The Law Entrepreneur - Understanding the Art of Leverage with David Neagle: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/333-understanding-the-art-of-leverage-with-david-neagle/ No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings: https://www.amazon.com/No-Rules-Netflix-Culture-Reinvention/dp/B0845Z14DX/ Get in touch with Steph Tuss:Website: https://www.lifeisnowinc.com/ Successful Mind Podcast: https://www.successfulmindpodcast.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/stephtuss Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. A few years into her journey, Steph's company plateaued. That's when she hired David Neagle to teach her how to better grow her business.Steph realized she didn't really want to teach people how to be healthy; she wanted to teach them how to be better leaders, how to change their mindsets, and how to break through their barriers and achieve levels of growth they had only dreamed possible. She sold her business and went to help David build Life is Now and grow it into a multimillion-dollar global consulting firm. Steph started in a sales role and worked her way through every position in the company. Today, she is the CEO. Exceptionally honored to have my personal mentor and coach, David Neagle, join me on my podcast. I've always said that great coaches have great coaches for the sake of gaining greater perspective and because of my trust and willingness, David's guidance has quite literally changed my life. He's a speaker and highly sought advisor for entrepreneurs, focusing on mindset and business processes, why I found such synergy in working with him. HIs story is nothing short of amazing. I introduced him as a “dead man” and high school drop out (an introduction that probably surprised him). David quit high school at 17 y/o in 1984. A high-school drop out, he worked at McDonald's, UPS, and a warehouse. He joined the Army and after 1 year came home and got married. With no education or skills, he was invited by a family member to begin selling life insurance. After the bottom dropped out of the market, the bottom dropped out of his business and he found himself floundering a bit. It was during a family vacation that his life changed when he got sucked into a dam, a place where several people had died in previous years. Miraculously, he survived. But… he had a chip on his shoulder and it wasn't for another couple of years that he hit bottom. Listen in to learn how he bounced back and became the multi-millionaire advisor to entrepreneurs and business leaders. Remember these two things as you listen in: First, act like you love what you do, show up, and do your best. And remember, no one changes without a reason to change. What you see as a problem, just is. You give what is the meaning of problem. Be open to learning, be willing to learn, and take the steps to change. You do not have to be the smartest person in the room. You were never taught how to build a business, learn from those who do know how.We earn what we expect to earn.  "Most people stay stuck in their business because that's where they're comfortable. Even if they're complaining and moaning about it, they understand the problems that they have and they deal with those problems every day. My guest today is David Neagel. He is a business consultant who doesn't focus exclusively on legal clients but has a great many of them. We spend a fair amount of time talking about how the legal realm of business fits in with a general overall schema of how a business operates in this country and around the world. We drill down a little bit on some of the unique perspectives that he has from his background, and how the life he has lived has led him to lifelong learning and developing his skills as a business consultant. It's a fascinating journey with a great story and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and David discuss: Changing your attitude to change your life.  David's journey from high school dropout to successful coach.  Differences in mindsets from childhood.  Creating and understanding your vision for your business.    Key Takeaways: The library is a space of learning and growth for free. You can read anything and apply what you learn and change your life.  Without taking actionable steps on what you learn, you will not see the progress you are hoping to achieve.  If you were raised in a middle-class family and want to be an entrepreneur, you must change your mindset around business and money. Not everyone wants to play the same role in their own businesses - there are distinct roles and, if you work with a coach, they need to understand what it is you do want to do.   "One of the most mature, courageous things any person in business can do is to admit where they're not good, where they have no interest in becoming good, and learning how to find somebody that is way better than they are to do that specific piece." —  David Neagle Get in touch with David Neagle: Website: https://davidneagle.com/ (https://davidneagle.com/)  Show: https://successfulmindpodcast.com/ (https://successfulmindpodcast.com/)  Thank you to our sponsors!
