Ross shares the story of being publicly defamed for standing and serving on matters she believed in. They also get into killer stories from J. Send us Fan MailOnly a tiny proportion of Professional Speakers are able to land the best stages again-and-again-and-again - and it is not always the celebrities. I'm joined by Maria Franzoni, Speakers' Advocate, Speaker Coach and former Speaker Bureau Owner, to dig into what actually drives paid Speaking engagements, repeat bookings, and higher Keynote Speaker fees. If you've ever wondered why brilliant talks still struggle to sell, Maria brings the Agent's-eye view that cuts through noise and gives you practical clarity. We start with the story behind the strategist: growing up British Italian, learning to navigate culture and language, and inheriting a serious work ethic from parents who built stability through sheer persistence. That personal foundation matters, because the stage is never only about slides and scripts. We also talk openly about gender assumptions, what it means to choose a childfree life, and how those experiences shape confidence, boundaries, and message. Then we get into the heart of it: Maria's "Bookability Formula" and what the top 1% of bookable Speakers do. We break down the four pillars the market rewards most: being relevant to a paying market, being known for one clear thing, being memorable to audiences and bookers, and being easy to find and easy to work with. We also explore the multiplier of value (ROI, outcomes, change) and the role of ego, which can help you step on stage but can also undermine trust if it grows too big. If you want a sharper speaker positioning, a more commercial topic, and a clearer route to getting booked more often, this conversation gives you a grounded framework to act on. In this episode, I'm joined by speaker coach Jenn Espinosa, whose route into speaking was anything but obvious. Before building her business, Jenn worked as a certified fraud examiner, using data, investigations and insight into human motivation to uncover where things were going wrong. Today, she helps speakers, coaches and consultants turn their message into something the market will actually pay for. We talk about what it really takes to build a speaking business, especially if your topic doesn't naturally fit into the obvious corporate boxes. Jenn shares how she helps clients shape their message for the right market, why so many speakers stay stuck on low fees, how to handle fee conversations more confidently, and why trying to speak on everything usually makes you harder to book, not easier. She also talks openly about how she gets work, why she believes speakers need to learn how to sell themselves, her thoughts on bureaus, the tools she uses in her business, and why she still believes in doing some things the old-school way. There's plenty in this conversation for speakers who want to become more commercial, more focused and more bookable.

The truth is…I left a “good” marriage with no villain and no logical explanation

Listen for REAL

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2026 56:29

Episode overview In this candid, tender conversation, Jen Oliver and Jen Aks discuss what it means to tell the truth and end a relationship—especially when it was seemingly “really good.” There was no villain and no tidy explanation that satisfies logic. Jen Aks shares the pivotal choice to leave her 20-year marriage, the internal cost of trusting her body when her mind demanded proof, and how truth-telling reshaped her relationships, parenting, identity, and purpose. The conversation moves from truth as concept to truth as embodied practice: the difference between heart and gut, why the body “knows” first, and is a practical pathway to clarity, calm, and confident action. What you'll hear in this episode The moment Jen Aks realized her body was whispering… then screaming (03:17–08:01) Why it's hard to leave when nothing is “wrong” and everything looks “perfect” from the outside (03:47–05:50) The cost count: kids, guilt, family, finances, and society's scripts (15:28–21:04) A powerful reframe: not just what you're “taking,” but what you're giving through truth (21:10–22:26) A relief valve for guilt: “This is their story now” + “hold people able” (23:38–26:58) The difference between heart vs gut, and why words aren't always required for truth (13:39–14:59; 10:04–11:41) A practical tool: using hands/gesture to invite discomfort in, release it, and return to clarity (30:09–35:39) “Yes, and…”—how doubt can coexist with knowing (43:14–43:42) After the truth: shedding, spiritual awakening, and a deeper sense of mission (37:45–40:31; 49:54–50:43) Key takeaways Truth isn't always logical. Sometimes there's no checklist explanation—only a bodily knowing. Your body may speak before your mind can translate. Physical signals (nausea, headaches, agitation, craving solitude) can be information. Not having the words doesn't invalidate the truth. “The feeling is enough.” Truth has costs—and also gifts. Especially with kids: the reframe is “What am I modeling for them?”  You don't need to villainize someone to leave. A relationship can be loving and still complete. Staying can be true, too. No shame—if you stay, the work is reclaiming yourself inside the choice. Embodied practices create clarity. Calm isn't the goal; calm is the path to clarity and confidence. It's never too late to tell the truth about how you handled the past. Repair and honesty can happen years later. Memorable concepts & frameworks mentioned Heart vs. gut: heart can be emotionally compelling; gut is a deeper “knowing” (13:39–14:59) Power of gesture: hands + nervous system + emotion processing (27:41–35:39) “Hold people able” from Susan Scott / Fierce Conversations (26:09–26:58) (also references Fierce Leadership) Relationship truth + dignity, referencing relationship mediator Staci Bartley (09:02–10:04) Jen Aks' book and her TEDxFolsom talk (11:41–12:09) About Jen Aks: Jen Aks is a TEDx speaker, author, and leadership coach who helps people reconnect with their body's wisdom to unlock powerful, authentic leadership. On August 16, 2025, she delivered her TEDx talk Your Body's Hidden Intelligence: From Mindset to Bodyset, introducing a revolutionary concept that challenges decades of mindset-focused approaches. Her debut book Your Body is Speaking launched on September 30, 2025, and became a #1 bestseller in the self-help category. Jen guides leaders—from CEOs and executives to parents and educators—to lead with clarity and confidence by trusting their body's intelligence. Recording Date: November 11, 2025 at the 2025 Fall Business Sports Luncheon. A Series hosted by Chris Holman since Joe Dumars spoke in 2004. Location: Capital Region International Airport (LAN) Todd Martin - Executive Leader, Keynote Speaker, Coach, and Retired Tennis Professional Todd Martin: From World-Class Competitor to Visionary Leader In this video with Todd's presentation: Todd emphasized resilience as a foundation of high performance: in tennis and business, setbacks are inevitable — but it's how you respond, adapt, and learn that separates champions. He stressed the value of team leadership and culture even in individualized fields. As a former World No. 4 and Davis Cup champion, he showed how being a trusted leader and mentor builds long-term value beyond individual wins. Todd highlighted the importance of innovation and reinvention — transitioning from pro-athlete to CEO, mentor and business strategist, he described how staying curious and leveraging one's legacy can create fresh opportunities. He discussed community impact and purpose — noting how he founded his youth-leadership nonprofit out of his early experiences, and how business leaders can strengthen their brand by intentionally giving back and aligning values with actions. Todd Martin is a former Olympian and World No. 4-ranked tennis player whose career was defined by excellence, leadership, and impact. He reached the singles finals of both the 1994 Australian Open and the 1999 US Open and was a cornerstone of the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1994 to 2002—helping secure the championship in 1995. Recognized by his peers for his integrity and insight, Martin served eight years as President of the ATP Tour Player Council, advocating for players and shaping the future of the sport. After retiring from professional play, he transitioned into coaching, mentoring U.S. Olympic Silver Medalist Mardy Fish and a young Novak Djokovic. Martin's post-playing career has been marked by visionary leadership. He served as CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Head of Tennis at Beemok Capital, and is the Founder and President of Todd Martin Tennis. In May 2025, he joined Swing Racquet + Paddle as Chief Strategy and Operations Officer, continuing his commitment to innovation in racquet sports. Beyond the court and boardroom, Martin has made a lasting impact in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan. In 1993, he co-founded Todd Martin Youth Leadership, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering at-risk youth through tennis, education, life skills, and leadership development. For over 30 years, the organization has been a beacon of opportunity and growth for the community.
