We're both March babies (happy birthmonth to all our March b-day listeners!) This episode, we each picked out a book for the other that we hoped they'd love for their birthday. Kristia got a favorite author who brought her back to March 2020 and the early days of Covid when we knew nothing, so our main character got stuck on Isabela Island in the Galapagos. We can think of worse places to be stuck. Rachael got a dark book with some unreliable narrators. Her story jumps from now to 17 years ago where a serial killer may be back, and what really happened all those years ago, oh and there's a lot of teeth.Books Discussed:Wish You Were Here by Jodi PicoultSuch a Pretty Smile by Kristi Demeester

This week it's time for good girls and bad girls to unite. Our guest is Kristi DeMeester whose new novel, Such A Pretty Smile sinks its teeth deep into the raised hand of misogyny. It's a tale of violence and viciousness and vivid nightmares – and a whole new apparatus to explore the evils that men do. At this point I assume we've already weeded out the guys who roll their eyes at #metoo!? That's for the best cos this is a feminism-heavy week. We talk about how horror treats women, from monstering menstruation to imagining female puberty as a threshold into hell. Along the way we cover the awful concept of the ‘lesser' dead, the question of whether pretty girl privilege is a thing, and whether men really think women are too delicate to write such awful things. We also consider why dogs can be much scarier than wolves. This book started my year off right. Ambiguous, though-provoking, and ANGRY. Kristi is not f*cking around here. Enjoy!!Such a Pretty Smile is released January 18th by St Martin's Press.Support Talking Scared on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, and TikTok or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com  Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/talkingscaredpod)

I would wish you all a happy new year in the show notes, but I physically cannot due to the passing of Betty White. Rest in peace Betty. I found out right after editing this episode. Such a Pretty Smile is a chill-inducing novel that examines the patriarchy and sexism through a terrifying tale of death and mystery. Oozing horror at every flip of the page, I could not put this electrifying novel down until I read it cover to cover. Filled with relatable characters and emotion, Such a Pretty Smile was overtly thrilling, blood-curdling, and above all, powerful. ON SALE JANUARY 18, 2022 A quote from Such a Pretty Smile: “Those pure, innocent girls kept from anything that defined them in the name of protection, while their brothers carried on as if there was nothing to fear. But for them, there wasn't. They would never understand the inherent trepidation that came as a result of being wrapped in girl flesh.” --- Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. // Book Content Warnings: alcohol, blood, gore, mention of homophobia, mental illness, panic attacks, violence, disassociation, implied sexual content, sexual content, mention of sexual harassment, insanity, intrusive thoughts, disturbing scenes, death, death of an animal, graphic violence, sexism, pedophilia, sexual assault, sexual harassment, murder // – As always, please educate yourself on the content warnings for this novel before reading. This novel is especially heavy and contains many disturbing and dark scenes/themes that can make one very uncomfortable. --- Read my review of Such a Pretty Smile: https://mayagreviews.wordpress.com/2021/12/31/such-a-pretty-smile-by-kristi-demeester-review/ Visit Kristi DeMeester's website: https://www.kristidemeester.com/ Purchase Such a Pretty Smile (Affiliate link): https://amzn.to/32stDEj Add Such a Pretty Smile to your Goodreads shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/57328756-such-a-pretty-smile --- View all of my links: https://beacons.ai/mayareviews Help others (Social resources): https://bit.ly/maya-social-resources Follow me @mayathebookworm on Twitter, BookBub, and BookSirens; and @mayareviews on Tumblr. I first read this story in the first volume of Year's Best Weird Fiction from Undertow Publications. It's one of those pieces that is almost non-existant, barely three pages long, yet which glows with poetic imagery. The delicate bones and feathers that the story's built from contrast sharply with the dense, sharp-edged sense of grief at its heart. Her passion for science and innovation shines in her roles as audiobook narrator, science fiction author, podcast producer, and forever-geeky mom. Spending fifteen years in higher education has taught her that there is something to learn from every story, be it fiction or nonfiction. You could say that she traded a university classroom for a recording studio, and narration is her path to lifelong learning. According to her fellow Secret World Chronicle coauthors, she writes about metahumans battling alien fascists in modern-day Atlanta.
