Welcome to Episode 35 of Magic Moments ✨ In this moment, I sat down with the brilliant Orrin - an absolute powerhouse when it comes to finance and business. He's got a solid foundation in the corporate world (three years of CIMA under his belt and five years grinding in finance), and he's since taken that knowledge and turned it into entrepreneurial gold. We discussed the stuff that most people shy away from - what to do when your business hits tough financial times. And it's not about hiding or powering through silently. It's about honesty and transparency. Orrin shared how being upfront and open with partners, investors, and teams can actually make or break your business when the pressure's on. We also dived into why every entrepreneur needs to get comfortable with the numbers. Finance isn't just for the accountants anymore - it's a core part of decision-making, and if you want to lead with confidence, you've got to understand what's under the hood of your business. Orrin's lived that transition from financial specialist to full-on business leader, and he drops some epic insight on how that shift works - and why CFOs are often stepping up as CEOs more and more. This conversation was a proper eye-opener, and if you're navigating the chaos of entrepreneurship (especially with money stress in the mix), this one's definitely for you.

All Music Used With Permission from Orrin Evans For more than two decades pianist Orrin Evans has made an art form of the unexpected. With more than 25 albums to his credit, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who's made a habit of rattling the jazz world's confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll and two Grammy nominations. As a daring pianist, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. This week, on the program, Orrin joined us recently with his trio to celebrate the Bop Stop's ninth anniversary, and we'll present both highlights from that show, along with selections from his prior appearances on the program. Featuring Luques Curtis on Bass, Mark Whitfield Junior on drums, and Orrin Evans on Piano, here's the best of the Orrin Evans Trio - Live at the Bop Stop.

In August of 1857, a wagon train of travelers from Missouri and Arkansas rolls into Utah Territory. It's called the Baker-Fancher party and it's headed for California. The Mormons believe the Baker-Fancher party is connected to the approaching U.S. Army column. The discussion bridges the often-separate worlds of business architecture and infrastructure with security architecture and infrastructure, arguing that these elements are fundamentally intertwined.Steve Orrin shares his extensive background in cybersecurity, highlighting his journey from leading multiple security startups to his current role at Intel, where he focuses on integrating technology to enhance government and enterprise systems. His experience underscores the importance of developing innovative security solutions that not only address current problems but anticipate future challenges.A central theme of the conversation is the concept of operationalizing cybersecurity measures to ensure they are effective and manageable. Orrin emphasizes the need for solutions that are not overly complex or burdensome, which can lead to them being unused or ineffective. This point segues into an exploration of the evolution of mainframe systems to today's distributed computing environments. Orrin and Martin discuss how lessons from the past can inform current practices, particularly in creating resilient and secure systems.Further, the dialogue covers the potential for cybersecurity practices to catalyze business innovation. Rather than viewing security measures solely as a risk management tool, Orrin posits that proactive security planning can enable new business capabilities and efficiencies. This perspective is elaborated through examples, such as leveraging cloud services and multi-factor authentication to improve business scalability and resilience.Lastly, the conversation touches on the broader implications of fostering a security-aware culture within organizations. By aligning security objectives with business goals and embracing a proactive approach to cybersecurity, Orrin suggests that companies can not only protect against threats but also unlock new growth opportunities. Listeners are left with a comprehensive overview of how integrating cybersecurity into solution architecture can not only mitigate risks but also drive business innovation and efficiency.Key Questions AddressedHow can integrating cybersecurity into solution architecture drive business innovation and growth? In what ways can lessons from the past, like mainframe security, inform current cybersecurity practices to create more resilient systems? How does operationalizing cybersecurity measures contribute to enhanced efficiency and scalability within organizations?___________________________Watch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube ChannelRedefining CyberSecurity Podcast with Sean Martin, CISSP playlist:
