As she turned 50 in the spotlight, Tori Amos' 2014 album Unrepentant Geraldines dropped and was greeted with headlines trumpeting the singer-songwriter's “return to form” and “comeback”. But here's the kicker: she never went anywhere. Although she had written a musical for the stage (The Light Princess, 2013), and composed a 21st century song cycle (Night of Hunters, 2011), Unrepentant Geraldines was Amos' first record of entirely original compositions in five years, since Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009). If that album found Amos floating above a palette of darkly-glowing synths and sultry beats, then Geraldines was firmly grounded in what many would deem the Amos “signature” sound: a foundation built around soulful, churchy organs, classical-complex pianoscapes, and pristinely-orchestrated vocal arrangements (exemplified on the single “Promise”, which prominently features her then-15 year old daughter Natashya). The romantic and lush album evokes and references other key moments in Amos' catalog, while somehow possessing a distinct energy that distinguishes it as its own living, breathing experience. “Each song had to tell a story that you understood without needing to hear another song to make it make sense,” Tori told me at the time of the records release. “Although some of them are interconnected, the songs, but they needed to live on their own.” There's no rigid adherence to any one specific style of music or instrumentation, no concept to be beholden to, and yes, while there are influences from past albums, Geraldines deploys them with fresh style and in an alchemic, organic way. The album possesses the kind of wildness of spirit that has always permeated Amos' work, but here that oft-explosive vivacity is contained and refined on songs “16 Shades of Blue”, with it's emotionally articulate swagger; and on the psychedelic sonic Fata Morgana of the title track. There is a noticeable confidence in the songs — in the writing, in the delivery, and in the bright verisimilitude of her compositional landscape. Also adventurous are her lyrical arrangements and vocal delivery. “I've told you many times: I sound like a fairy on crack. I know that! So you have to surrender to what your pipes are.” Please join Kristen, Matt and Joey as they tackle a pivotal moment in Tori's discography and history. Messing With The Master: Unrepentant Geraldines is available wherever you check out podcasts. Playlists JV KK MM

One of the most exciting musical revivals this year is of course Assassins at Chichester Festival Theatre. A firm favourite among Sondheim aficionados, the musical tells the stories of the assassins and almost assassins of US Presidents. One of the show's stars is Amy Booth-Steel who's playing Sara Jane Moore; the woman who attempted to assassinate Gerald Ford. The production marks the first time Amy has performed in Chichester and also the first time working with long-time friend Polly Findlay who directs her first musical. We hear Amy talk about her fondness for Polly as well as for Stephen Sondheim who she calls a genius and expects the run to be an emotional one as Sondheim was involved in the new revisions for this production before he passed. In this brand new interview, Amy Booth-Steel opens up about what drew her to the part of Sara Jane Moore and why this show feels particularly relevant today. Throughout her career, Amy has openly spoken about her views on politics and current affairs, and here she shares that she feels it's particularly important to keep an eye on politics following the pandemic. Over her career, Amy has also starred in some of the most acclaimed productions in recent years including The Light Princess, Tammy Faye and Heathers. More recently, Amy also starred in Georgia Oakley's Blue Jean, a film that discusses the story of teachers who abseiled down the Houses of Parliament in protest against Section 28. Now, as she heads to Chichester for this hugely exciting revival, she re-emphasises her love for acting and telling stories and she shares her hope that the show will help audiences have a new perspective on the real life people the show talks about.Assassins runs at Chichester Festival Theatre from 3rd June - 24 June with tickets on sale now!
The Light Princess by George MacDonald audiobook. Plenty of princesses have been cursed by wicked witches, but the curse placed on this princess by her evil aunt is an unusual one: it removes all the princess's gravity. What can break the curse before the princess floats away? Perhaps the best thing for her would be to fall in love, but how a person with no gravity can fall in anything is just the problem Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A story about the beauty and love your special light can bring to others, and how it spreads from one person to everyone! 1988 - Paul began his flying career with the company "Flying By Foy", where he became Peter Foy's protege. 1995 - After 8 years of service, feeling he had reached his full potential, Paul became one of the founders of the fledgling company ZFX, Inc. This is where he truly began to carve a niche for himself as an aerial choreographer / designer. Paul's passion, creativity, artistry, and ability to communicate with directors, designers, and performers kept him in high demand. 2004 - Now known as "The Fly Guy," Paul realized his corporate obligations were beginning to take him away from his true passion. He knew it was time to spread his wings and fly on his own. 2008 - Paul celebrated his 20th year in the flying industry! He had now choreographed over 300 productions of Peter Pan in 8 different countries and numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway productions including such favorites as Wicked, Fiddler on the Roof, and Curtains. 2010 - Glenn Casale approached Paul to discuss a reimagined production of Disney's The Little Mermaid. He wanted to add the effect of simulated swimming to the mermaids to make them look more realistic as they swam underwater. The show opened in 2011 in Holland. Due to its success, another production opened in Moscow six months later. (Currently there are two productions running in Japan.) 2013 - The Light Princess 2016 - Tuacahn Ampitheatre
Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. Today's story is one of my childhood favorites, The Light Princess, written by George MacDonald and published in 1864. Everyone knows that sometimes a wicked witch may come uninvited to a royal christening, and the results can be quite frightening. A princess may sleep for a hundred years, or might turn into an apple, or some other such curse. But what would it be like if the bewitched princess simply didn't weigh anything? Here is the delightful story of a princess who didn't make much impression on the earth with her footsteps, but will certainly make an impression on your heart. Now sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. The healing power of love is a very important factor in many stories. Throughout life, we aim to take care of ourselves as well as those around us. Mothers and fathers take care of children, neighbors and friends help each other socially, and many professionals like doctors, social workers, law enforcement officers, teachers, and many others all provide necessary service for those around them. In this episode we will see the explanation of some beautiful acts of service for oneself as well as others. It is important to think about how we can better serve not only ourselves, but those around us as we grow older and learn more about life. Let these stories -although lighthearted and jovial- be a lesson to how we can understand and help one another even through treacherous times. On today's episode, enjoy the following: "The Mollusk's Tale" by Bob Reiser from Foibles and Fiddlesticks: Fables for Grownups (2:03) The Daily Mix: "Leilani of the Distant Sea" with Rachel Wadham (11:53) "The Light Princess" by Danielle Bellone from Moon-Eyed Sister (21:10) Radio Family Journal : "Canada" by Sam Payne (51:00)

What is salvation? How can we know God? In this episode, we discuss the weakness of explanations without participation--the difference between truth and reality--and the power of story to bridge the gap. As C. S. Lewis puts it in his essay "Myth Became Fact":“Human intellect is incurably abstract. Yet the only realities we experience are concrete- this pain, this pleasure, this dog, this man. While we are loving the man, bearing the pain, enjoying the pleasure, we are not intellectually apprehending Pleasure, Pain or Personality. [...] This is our dilemma—either to taste and not to know or to know and not to taste—or, more strictly, to lack one kind of knowledge because we are in an experience or to lack another kind because we are outside it. As thinkers we are cut off from what we think about; as tasting, touching, willing, loving, hating, we do not clearly understand. The more lucidly we think, the more we are cut off: the more deeply we enter into reality, the less we can think. You cannot study pleasure in the moment of the nuptial embrace, nor repentance while repenting, nor analyze the nature of humor while roaring with laughter. But when else can you really know these things? ‘If only my toothache would stop, I could write another chapter about pain.' But once it stops, what do I know about pain? Of this tragic dilemma, myth is the partial solution.”Before listening to this episode, you might want to check out the previous episode, "The Light Princess," if you haven't already. Nothing like a good story. In fairy tales, what is the nature of a curse and how is it broken? Is a curse placed upon someone against their will or is it willingly embraced from within? In order to be free, does the change have to come from within or must deliverance come from outside? In Christian terms, did our redemption happen "on the cross" or does it happen "in our hearts" when we repent and believe? We hope you enjoy this story by George MacDonald, adapted and read by our own Ross Byrd. The Light Princess is a classic George MacDonald fairy tale about a young princess whose gravity is taken away from her by the curse of a wicked witch (who also happens to be her aunt). Have you been to the theatre lately? Perhaps you've attended a performance at the National Theatre in London, or watched a broadcast of one at your local cinema. If so, you'll know that they do some amazing things at these live productions - performers float or even ”fly”, shows have live birds flying, and they even set things on fire. How do these productions do these things within the confines of a theatre or arts centre, and how do they balance risk while maintaining the artistic integrity of the production? Enter, stage right, my guest on today's episode, Ms. Anna Glover. Anna leads the Safety Risk and Fire Management team at the world renowned National Theatre here in London. As you will soon find out, Anna does NOT do Health and Safety risk. Rather, she and her team are a core part of these internationally acclaimed shows – full stop. The work she does embodies what great risk management is all about – taking risk with intelligence and confidence – and achieving great things in the process. We obviously cover this fascinating line of work in the episode – including her work with top directors, choreographers, designers, and actors, and on some amazing shows. But, there is much more to Anna than this. We have a great conversation around how Anna got into this line of work. This is a wonderful example of how to find your path – or more precisely, how to let it find you. We move on to have a great discussion about Anna's philosophy on risk, fear, and many other things. We also cover: •What she learned from working with Juliette Binoche •Her time in North Wales from studying to running an outdoor pursuits on a military base •Her “run in” with Sir Ranulph Fiennes •Martial arts – Anna is a second dan in the Korean art of hapkido •Finding your path •And much, much more This is an amazing episode and I am sure you will enjoy it! But that was the pearl of great price, the one field that had treasure in it. I realise now that I must give all that I have to possess it. Life is not hurrying on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you. __________________ Did you like this episode?
