Very Jerry Mitchell... Jerry Mitchell and Michelle Zeitlin shared their memories of working with the legendary Michael Bennett and Bob Avian, on SCANDAL, a Broadway workshop with an outstanding group of stars and triple threats. Jerry was assisting the show creator, Michael Bennett at the original auditions, where Michelle was amongst over two thousand dancer-singers auditioning for a few coveted ensemble roles for this ground-breaking musical, at 890 Studios. Jerry was an assistant and skeleton crew dancer on that production, which led to so many other amazing productions including FOLLIES and CHESS. He also worked with Jerome Robbins on JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY. And then...he became a choreographer in his own right. Now wearing the title of Director-Choreographer, he is most proud of BROADWAY BARES, and he was honored this year with the 2023 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his work on a modern day burlesque show that has raised millions of dollars for Equity Fights Aids. @jammyprod on Instagram For more on Michelle Zeitlin, CEO of More Zap Productions & Management, please see http://www.passion-power.com http://www.morezap.com

Part One of their conversation, featuring lots of stories about his work with Michael Jackson, was the last episode. This is Part 2 where Vince talks a lot about his yours working with Madonna; first on the Pepsi commercial that got banned, then on the “Express Yourself” video, the Blonde Ambition tour, the iconic Marie Antionette “Vogue” performance at the MTV Awards, the “Sooner or Later” Marilyn Monroe homage at the Oscars and the film Evita. Vince recalls getting the Blonde Ambition gig late, after another choreographer had been fired, and having to come up with the whole 18-song show in 21 days. He'd put a song on before he went to bed, dream what the number would be and then put it on the dancers and Madonna the next day. He also talks about getting a bad review from the Pope, refusing to appear on camera for Truth or Dare, creating tango magic in Argentina for Evita and what it was like when his two iconic collaborators Michael Jackson and Madonna would talk to him about each other. Other topics include: getting humiliated, then fired, then rehired by Shirley MacLaine, working with Bjork and Lars Von Trier on Dancer in the Dark, directing the musical Cabaret in Berlin where its set, being blacklisted by Hal Prince, working with Mike Nichols and Robin Williams on The Birdcage and the power of putting inspirational pictures on your refrigerator.  http://www.vincentpaterson.com

Dennis had so many questions for Vincent about working with icons like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Shirley MacLaine and the Mandrell SIsters that the interview lasted for over two hours. So ithis one's going to be a two-parter.   In this episode, Part 1, Vincent talks about what inspired him to write the book, growing up with an alcoholic father in a small town in Pennsylvania and falling in love with dance in his mid 20's. He also discusses the tragic murder of his first lover in Tucson, AZ, the psychic interventions that helped him move out to LA and his earliest dance jobs working with stars like Olivia Newton-John in the "Totally Hot" video. He also talks about his long creative relationship with Michael Jackson, working first as a dancer in the “Beat It” and “Thriller” videos then choreographing Michael's epic “Smooth Criminal” video, which features that gravity-defying lean move that Dennis had several questions about. Other topics include: why choreographers need and deserve a union, saving pieces of floor from the "Thriller Room" the late great Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio in North Hollywood, what it was like to be part of the L.A. dance community during the AIDS crisis, talking about sex and masturbation with Michael Jackson, hanging out with Bubbles the Chimp and what Vincent thinks about when he hears a Michael Jackson song today. Hey friends, It's Tamara here. I hope you enjoyed the previous 3 audio fiction episodes from the Food for Thought project. As you know, Artist Soapbox produces original scripted audio fiction such as the three FFT projects, as well as interviews with artists about their creative process.  We're back to the interview/conversational format with this episode and most of the ones to follow for this season. Today, I'm dipping in to introduce 2 of our new podcast hosts – Lormarev Jones and Griffin James. If you've been a long time listener of Artist Soapbox, then you will likely know them and you can also read their https://artistsoapbox.org/about/#team (bios on the Artist Soapbox website). Have you looked at our beautiful website? I am so in love with it.  Now, Lormarev and Griffin contain multitudes of course, but here are some bread crumbs for your to follow into their conversation: Lormarev Jones is an Educator, Director/Choreographer, and Actor and Intimacy Director. Lormarev currently teaches at Meredith College while continuing to freelance in all her areas of expertise. She has been interviewed on the Soapbox several times, acted in an episode of ASBX shorts and will be super featured in the upcoming scripted audio fiction piece: Jesus Pancake. She is well-known as a hydration advocate.  Griffin James is an interdisciplinary theatre maker and writer local to the triangle area. They have a degree in English Creative Writing from NC State where they were involved with the university theatre as a performer, stage manager, and more. Griffin was the production manager for all six of the ASBX Shorts and all 3 of the Food for Thought Projects. Whew, my blood runs cold thinking about all of that logistical management. You can also catch them voicing the Drunk College Student in I'm Not Here Right Now. (Griffin was not type cast in that role.) In this episode, you'll hear these two friends introduce themselves and each other. You'll get a sense of their style and vibe, and what they'll be focusing on in their own episodes this Season. Lormarev and Griffin are two of my favorite people, and I know you will love them too. I'm so grateful that they have agreed to step in as hosts. And guess what? In the next episode, you'll hear me introduce two more of my favorite people and guest hosts, Juliana Finch and the inimitable Mara Thomas. Ruben takes us back to his college years when he had the opportunity to launch a business while in the middle of a school project at the University of Arizona. He touches on his motivation for opening a dance studio, stemming from childhood memories with his dance friends and the importance of finding spaces to dance and perform in his neighborhood. He explains how “dance chose him” from the young of eleven years old and his transition from focusing on sports to the hip-hop dance scene, which originated from learning how to “sea walk” in preparation for a middle school dance! Welcome to the final episode of the "THEATRE IS BACK" 3 part series where Tene gives you an inside look at her very first live show back post pandemic! This episode features Stephanie Graham; the Director & Choreographer of "Back in '59" and the very first choreographer to join the "Are You Okay!?" family. Stephanie shares her journey from performing full time to transitioning to the creative side and breaks down her exact process as a choreographer. She also unpacks the biggest challenges she faced as an artist during the pandemic, asking herself: who am I without theatre and this craft I have dedicated my life to? These two highlight the main differences from rehearsing a play today vs pre pandemic; after all of the immense change we have gone through as artists, people & society as a whole. The interview also takes an interesting turn when Tene & Steph discuss the intimacy direction (the kisses) from the show and the way the arts industry needs to be approaching intimate moments on stage moving forward. Listen to find out what Steph missed the most about doing theatre and the energy Tene will be bringing into her next season of the podcast! Thank you and that's a wrap on Season 2 podsters! There is so much to write about today's guest that I have restarted this intro many times.  You really just need to watch to hear and feel all the positive vibes yourself! Since first walking into his classroom at Broadway Dance Center here in NYC, I knew I would be a fan of Jim Cooney.  He has an energy that is a rare mix of welcoming and energizing but also grounded and professional-- all of that at once.  Beyond learning steps, he delves deep into your why, showing up for yourself, centering yourself, and so much more, while challenging his students with such a variety of styles of dance.   While he is an incredible (and award-winning) choreographer and director, he goes further, with a strong business mindset and belief in the abilities of all those he encounters.  He took these skills, as well as a clear passion for helping people strive toward their greatest potential, beyond the physical classroom/stage, creating Amplified Artists, a platform for artists with a mission to create abundance and a bountiful life.   Jim tells me so much more about this platform, actionable tips regarding being clear on who you are, what you are presenting, the importance of keeping it simple, and that yes, we all absolutely should be embracing our unique, varied backgrounds.  @JimCooney: jimcooney . me/blog Instagram & Twitter: @jimcooneynyc “Amplified Artists is a membership community for those working in the performing arts. The mission is to create abundance in the type of art you make, but more importantly, to build a bountiful life. We do this by integrating our artistry with our money and health, which streamlines our efforts and creates a bigger, more fulfilling impact.”  Find out more at AmplifiedArtists . life We need all the good news we can get. This brings me to Some (More) Good News, featuring mini interviews with people following their passions, even if that means leaving behind a potentially more comfortable career path, and making people feel better along the way.   (Shout-out to John Krasinski for inspiring this whole thing in the first place!)
