Gerrymandering—the manipulation of voting maps for partisan gain—has been part of American politics since its founding, but today, the problem is reaching a breaking point. In this episode, host Simone Leeper shares the story of Vicki and Malcolm Reed, a Utah couple who Campaign Legal Center are representing in a landmark lawsuit defending voters' rights, alongside Mark Gaber, CLC's Senior Director of Redistricting. Together, they trace how Utahns fought back after lawmakers attempted to overturn a voter-approved ballot measure that created a citizen-led independent redistricting commission—and how the Utah Supreme Court ultimately sided with voters. As Malcolm and Vicki's story unfolds, we also highlight how the current wave of mid-decade redistricting arms race that started in Texas and is now spilling into other states threatens to weaken voters' voices nationwide. We explore how voters, courts and Congress can act to restore fairness to America's elections and ensure that voters — not politicians — decide the outcome.Timestamps:(00:01) — Who are Vicki and Malcolm Reed, and why did they take on Utah's legislature?(02:10) — What is gerrymandering, and how does it work?(05:11) — How did the framers envision fair representation?(10:10) — What is redistricting, and why does it matter for voters?(11:25) — What was Utah's Proposition 4, and how did it aim to end gerrymandering?(14:42) — What's the difference between racial and partisan gerrymandering?(15:12) — How do “packing” and “cracking” weaken voters' power?(16:02) — How has technology supercharged modern gerrymandering?(17:12) — How did Utah lawmakers gut the independent redistricting commission?(20:44) — Why did Campaign Legal Center sue the Utah legislature?(23:22) — What happened when CLC argued the case before the Utah Supreme Court?(25:15) — What did the unanimous court decision mean for Utah voters?(28:50) — What is happening right now in Texas and other states across the country?(32:55) — What federal laws could end gerrymandering nationwide?(36:13) — Why should the fight for fair maps in Utah give us hope for democracy?Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at Campaign Legal Center, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Mark Gaber manages Campaign Legal Center's redistricting litigation and policy program, which seeks to achieve fair maps for racial and language minority groups, and to curb the influence of partisanship in redistricting.Mark has led CLC's redistricting program to major successes since the 2020 Census. He argued for petitioners in the Wisconsin Supreme Court in Clarke v. Wisconsin Election Commission, which resulted in the invalidation of Wisconsin's state legislative maps and the transformation of the state's legislative maps from being among the most politically skewed to among the most politically fair in the country. He is lead counsel in League of Women Voters of Utah v. Utah State Legislature, in which CLC has successfully challenged the Utah legislature's repeal of a voter-adopted initiative reforming the state's redistricting process and its enactment of an extremely gerrymandered congressional map. In that case, Mark has (to date) argued twice in the Utah Supreme Court, resulting in two unanimous decisions in favor of CLC's clients.Mark has also led CLC's redistricting team to victories enforcing the Voting Rights Act (VRA). These include two cases on behalf of North Dakota's Native American voters, where he has argued in the Eighth Circuit against a challenge aiming to neutralize the VRA by precluding citizens from filing suit and where CLC's clients have secured two legislative districts providing Native American voters an equal opportunity to elect their preferred candidates. Mark also led CLC's successful challenge to Washington's legislative map, which was found to discriminate against Latino voters in the Yakima region, and CLC's ongoing challenge to the racially discriminatory Galveston County, Texas, map.Links: Cartoon, "The Gerry-Mander", 1813 — Smithsonian Gerrymandering: The Origin Story — Library of Congress Blogs LWV Utah and MWEG v.
I wanted to give a lot of my platform today to voices from the Atlanta "No Kings Day" event, from local grassroots activists like Dom Kelly of the New Disabled South to Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock and Stacey Abrams. There was also appearances from former state senator Jason Esteves and Atlanta City Council Presidential candidate Rohit Mahlotra.------There's also this: the Atlanta Journal Constitution profiled Ashley Merchant, the attorney central in the exposing of the Fani Willis / Nathan Wade coupling that formed the basis for Trump co-conspirators' 'conflict of interest' claims (not that a conflict even existed ...). There's just something gross about the legal profession when this is something journalism would laud. Not sorry to say so. ------MAGAs and their unintended consequences ... an Augusta conservative talk radio host posted a close-up, zoomed in photo of someone wearing blue gym shorts. Clearly we were looking at someone's genital "bulge," but have no idea whose, but in the post, host Austin Rhodes wrote "There have been more scholarship players with ding-dongs on the Augusta University Women's Volleyball Team, than there have been KINGS in the U.S. government."Never mind the pivot from "No Kings Day" and its historic precedent; no, as right wing pundits are wont to do, Austin felt the need to play "hey, look over here! Back to banging on trans people!" game with his audience. The problem is, he didn't make it clear the alleged trans athlete no longer plays at the local university, but only after his followers openly stated they'd be uh "scrutinizing" the current roster. That poor girl, named "Hunter," with her ample shoulders and thighs. Oops. ------My guest today: Amir Badat, Fair Fight's senior policy advisor and southern states director, to weigh in on the looming evisceration of Section of the Voting Rights' Act by the U.S. Supreme Court. Also, his Fair Fight co-hort Max Flugrath, shared on social media a 2019 New Yorker piece that brought attention to the "master of modern Republican gerrymandering." A timely look back as the intent of the VRA is set to be done away with by a Trump-packed Supreme Court.
In today's episode, Kip dives into the latest market action, celebrating new all time highs in tech, the semiconductors, and the Nasdaq, and explains why this bull market is textbook, don't listen to the naysayers! Kip breaks down the bold calls the VRA team made earlier this year, from plunging interest rates to shifts in mortgage rates and what that means for investors as we head into the midterms and beyond. He explores how changes at the Fed, Trump's policy pivots, and a potential “rocket fuel” drop in mortgage rates could send the market even higher. You'll get insight into why Kip expects next year to be a blockbuster for stocks, with predictions of the S&P 500 and Nasdaq delivering outsized gains. He also shares his candid views on political developments, the importance of optimism in investing, and the risks and rewards in gold, bitcoin, and standouts like Tesla.
On this special episode of Native Land Pod, host Angela Rye is joined by attorney for the Legal Defense Fund, Janai Nelson. Ms. Nelson joins us just after leaving the Supreme Court, where she argued a case which could have radical implications for the Voting Rights Act and redistricting across the country: Louisiana v. Callais. In 2024, Louisiana was found to be in violation of the VRA and was forced to redraw their congressional map. The original map created only one majority Black district out of six total districts, in a state where roughly 1/3rd of the population is Black. Ms. Nelson and the Legal Defense Fund argued in favor of the new map, which created two majority Black districts, in the Supreme Court back in March of 2025. The highest court has called them back to hear arguments AGAIN, a move rarely taken, except for with the most consequential of cases (Roe v. Wade, Brown v. Board, etc.). If Louisiana’s original map is allowed to stand, with only one majority Black district, it would effectively gut the Voting Rights Act, and lead to a reduction in representation for Black people across the country. It's fall, it's October and the US Supreme Court is back in session. On today's episode, we have a special guest from the AFJ Justice team. We are joined by our colleague Jamal Lockings. With Jamall we will cover the big cases to be heard by the court. Then we will talk about how nonprofits can get involved with supreme court advocacy, nominees, and more while staying nonpartisan and being mindful of lobbying limits. Attorneys for this Episode Brittany Hacker Susan Finkle Sourlis Jamaal Lockings Intro to Justice Program Our justice team works on both federal and state judicial appointments and elections and runs numerous invaluable resources including our judicial vacancy tracker and helps keep us and the public informed about nominees. This includes the decisions they make after they've been confirmed, and how cases in federal courts – especially the supreme court – are impacting our civil rights and democracy. Today, we are thrilled to be joined on the pod by our friend and colleague Jamaal Lockings. Jamaal is a fellow attorney who serves as a Dorot Fellow on the Federal Courts team. Today we want to talk about the upcoming cases in this supreme court term, what we should be keeping an eye on, the potential impacts for our c3 partners, and what nonprofits can do during this term and future terms to advocate. Cases to watch out for this term Voting Rights and Money In Politics Louisiana v. Callais Issue: Whether a states efforts to comply with the VRA is, in itself, a form of racial discrimination (1) Rehearing from last term (2) The Court is playing politics (3) the VRA is on the chopping block Consequences: A final blow to the VRA, and increased difficulty for minority voters to participate in free and fair elections National Republican Senatorial Committee v. FEC Issue: Whether to maintain the federal limits on political party coordination w/ candidates in campaign advertising. (1) Could render campaign contribution limits meaningless, increasing the already outsized influence of money in politics (2) These cases on elections and voting rights can't be observed in a vacuum LGBTQ+ Chiles v. Salazar Issue: Whether Colorado's ban on “conversion therapy” for minors violates First Amendment protections of free speech and religious exercise (1) Religious litigants have been notoriously successful in this court (2) free speech and religious exercise have been used not to ensure equity or equality but to prop up Christian nationalist ideology. West Virginia v. B.P.J. Issue: Title IX and barring Trans athletes (1) This court continues to wade into culture wars (2) It's ruling in Skrmetti and Justice Barrett's assertion that Trans isn't a protected states (3) Embolden lawmakers to continue to write oppressive laws against trans individuals Executive Power & Civil Liberties Trump v. Slaughter Issue: whether statutory removal protections for members of the FTC – and agencies like it – “violate” the separation of powers. (1) The Court's emergency orders this summer (2) growing belief in the unitary executive theory (3) Likely to overrule Humphrey's executor Consequences: Collapse of independent agencies and with it, governing stability. What c3s can do: Supreme court advocacy is nonpartisan—you are free to stand for or against cases before any court or get involved in the cases. Litigation at the supreme court: c3s are often the best voice and represent groups who otherwise would not be heard or could not bring such large scale cases Amicus briefs Educating the public about cases and impacts of opinions As you know c3 public charities may engage in lobbying and there are ways through lobbying that can affect the courts at the federal or maybe the state level Nominee advocacy—Advocate for or against nominees to supreme court (lobbying) Remember the lower district courts and circuit courts as well Remember the lobbying rules if you are a c3: must track and report your lobbying the IRS and stay within your lobbying limits. Great place for c4s to get involved because they can lobbying in an unlimited amount. Ethics advocacy—ask congress for more oversight or ethics rules (Lobbying if it will require a legislative vote).

The American Democracy Minute Radio News Report & Podcast for Sept. 8, 2025Pro-Voter Groups Respond to State of Louisiana's Equal Protection Clause Defense in October's Consequential U.S. Supreme Court CaseWe reported that the State of Louisiana shifted its argument in Louisiana vs. Callais, and now claims the protections of Voting Rights Act of 1965 Section 2, are unconstitutional and no longer needed. In today's episode, Kip takes us through a powerful midweek market wrap. Kip reflects on another strong performance from the markets, diving into the ongoing debate around seasonality, market timing, and why his team at VRA remains bullish despite the cautionary tales from “seasonality bears.” He discusses the importance of a disciplined approach to investing and how systematic monthly dollar cost averaging in their top growth stocks has become a game changer by removing emotion from decision making. Kip also revisits his conviction that the bear market ended in early April, comparing the current recovery to the post-pandemic rally and making a bold case for why trying to time exits based on seasonal charts could be a mistake right now. He touches on striking topics from the mechanics of inflation, interest rates, and America's “melt-up” moment, to the impact tariffs have or rather have not on inflation. Vypadalo to idylicky. Místo činu vonělo čerstvými rohlíky, jeden z lupičů to tu znal dokonale a s sebou navíc měli i technickou novinku: ruční kotoučovou brusku. A jakou dohru měl případ u soudu?
A kolik vlastně stojí lidský život?

Discussion Highlights:Global demographic megatrends include aging populations, declining fertility rates, and diverging regional population dynamics.Migration patterns involve both forced displacement from conflict zones such as Ukraine and Palestine and labor migration from the Western Balkans, with climate-related movement remaining unpredictable.Depopulation in the Western Balkans is driven by inaccurate census data, economic factors that incentivize emigration, steadily declining fertility rates, and cultural influences on family size. Many countries in the region face labor shortages as plumbers, electricians, and healthcare workers emigrate, prompting policy responses to attract migrant labor, cover an estimated €600 million integration cost in Croatia, and implement language instruction and integration programs.Populist political discourse often exploits public fears about migration, while political leaders frequently show reluctance to acknowledge domestic labor shortages and plan beyond short electoral cycles.Europe's geopolitical context is shaped by U.S.-China competition, the continuation of the war in Ukraine, and uneven or delayed European responses to crises, such as the conflict in Gaza. The current EU enlargement process is critiqued as overly merit-based, and many argue for the package accession of all Western Balkan states, drawing lessons from Croatia's recent membership and anticipating a changing nature of the future European Union.Bosnia and Herzegovina's post-Dayton governance system succeeded in halting widespread violence but remains hampered by persistent power-sharing gridlock, redundant international structures such as the Office of the High Representative, and ongoing challenges in constitutional and education system reforms.Thirty years after Dayton, instances of inter-ethnic violence have remained low since 1995, but schooling and commemorative practices remain fragmented, and domestic dialogue on wartime accountability has stalled.EU integration offers the potential to replace international oversight with European Union frameworks while addressing governance deficits, pervasive corruption, and the need for electoral reforms.About Alida VračićAlida Vračić is a political scientist and lawyer. On today's episode of Tiers of Scrutiny, Pari and I discuss Louisiana v. Callais, a case that the Supreme Court heard arguments for in late March. After a federal court ordered Louisiana to fix a Voting Rights Act violation, the new map—drawn to empower Black voters—sparked backlash from non-Black plaintiffs claiming racial gerrymandering. When, if ever, is racial gerrymandering a legitimate remedy? What does this mean for the future of the VRA? We discuss these questions and more in this episode. In today's episode, Kip breaks down the market's surprising resilience after Moody's downgraded U.S. debt, stripping it of its AAA credit rating. Despite the negative headline, the markets staged a notable comeback, demonstrating classic bull market behavior with investors focusing on the market's reaction rather than the news itself. Kip also recaps highlights from Charles Payne's show, where top technician Rich Ross set ambitious targets for the S&P 500, Tesla, and Nvidia companies that are already staples of the VRA portfolio.
