My friend Lisa Graves served in the Justice Dept under Attorneys General Janet Reno and John Ashcroft in both the Clinton and GWBush administrations. She's been chief counsel for nominations under then Senate Judiciary Chair Patrick Leahy, and her CV has many more examples of her legal bona fides. These days, Lisa is Executive Director of the watchdog group True North Research, but she appears regularly on this show in her personal capacity as a citizen, not representing any organization. With all of the actions taken by this new horrific administration over the last 25 days, what I understand is that the vast majority of them are not only illegal but unconstitutional. Today, Lisa Graves returns to the show to try to help me make some sense out of what's going on.
Many times in the last two years, we have warned about the grim consequences of allowing a wannabe dictator–who attempted to overthrow the government on his way out the door four years ago–back into the White House. What we warned about has happened. We are 45 days away from Donald Trump's second inauguration. And based on who the Mussolini of Queens has picked for his cabinet and staff positions, it looks like he was dead serious about being a dictator on Day One.This week, I will replay clips of some of my past guests talking about American fascism. We must now listen not as a warning, but as a way to be prepared. This episode features clips from interviews with the defense analyst Brynn Tannehill, author of AMERICAN FASCISM; historian Manisha Sinha, author of THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SECOND AMERICAN REPUBLIC; True North Research executive director Lisa Graves; and strategic communications expert Robbie Harris. If you're a regular listener of the show then you're familiar with today's guest, Lisa Graves. In addition to being one of my favorite people, she's also one of the most brilliant. She's currently Director of TrueNorthResearch.org. but appears on this show in her personal capacity offering facts and opinions based on her unimpeachable experience working in the DoJ under AGs Janet Reno and John Ashcroft, in the Senate Judiciary Committee as lead counsel for nominations and so much more. True North Research published a primer on what is now likely the playbook for the D'ump 2.0 administration, better known to us all as Project 2025. It's at Project2025Admin.com and includes a profile of Kash Patel, who D'ump has suggested he'll appoint to lead the FBI. OMG. And the EXTreme Court hear a case this morning -- US vs Skrmetti - about whether Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors violates the US Constitution. (Watch out, this slide is already horribly slippery.)
One of our favorite guests here on the Nicole Sandler Show is Lisa Graves. Not just because she's one of the better angels among us, but she's also wicked smart and has the CV to back up her beliefs. These days Lisa Graves works as a governmental watchdog of sorts in her role as Director of True North Research, whose work you should follow at truenorthresearch.org. But she usually appears on my show in her personal capacity as a private citizen with great expertise on all matters pertaining to our Justice system and Dept of Justice, the Senate nominations and confirmation proceedings, and how things are supposed to work in and around Washington DC. Today, we'll get Lisa's take on some late-breaking news that Matt Gaetz has pulled his name from consideration to be the next US Attorney General, though 180's like that are often cause for even more alarm. What other rules has the dictator-elect broken and how many more norms has he shattered? Does she have any advice for those of us who feel as if we're hanging on for dear life by a frayed thread? Lisa Graves is one of the smartest people I know and she doesn't sound an alarm without real justification. Perhaps a group hug is what we need today. We'll do that, virtually anyway...
In the first segment, we learn about the phenomenon of “dark money”: political campaign contributions designed to be difficult or impossible for the public to know about or trace. Mickey talks with media scholar Steve Macek about GOP plans for legislation to make it even easier to keep these contributions secret, as well as the failure of corporate media to energetically report on dark money and the wider issues of what big donors get for their dollars. Then, Project Censored's curriculum development coordinator Mischa Geracoulis guest co-hosts the show to address the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, the conservative wish list for a second Trump term. Mischa speaks with Lisa Graves, who specifically addresses how education and the media landscape would be changed if Project 2025 is actually implemented. GUESTS Steve Macek is a professor of communications and media studies at North Central College in Illinois. He's also the co-coordinator, with Andy Lee Roth, of Project Censored's Campus Affiliates Program. Steve was also one of the editors of the recent book Censorship, Digital Media, and the Global Crackdown on Freedom of Expression (Peter Lang, 2024). Lisa Graves is the founder and executive director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group. She has previous experience at the Justice Department and in the federal court system. More analysis of Project 2025 can be found at project2025admin.com. The Republicans always go back to the teleprompter. They claim that Joe Biden can't speak without one, but won't admit that they use them too. And when they fail? They got nothing. Seriously. The first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee was replete with Teleprompter troubles. We'll share a few laughs at their expense,. And because the media rarely shows a Joe Biden rally or speech, we will! President Biden is set to speak to an NAACP conference in Las Vegas while we're on the air, so we'll carry the feed (finally found one that had decent sound, though it took a few tries). Also, I promised a link to the new expose that Lisa Graves' organization True North Research has been working on. It's called Project 2025 Administration. She'll be here Thursday to tell us all about it, but in the meantime, you can read some of it for yourself!
Marjorie Hershey (Political science professor, Indiana University-Bloomington; @IUPOLS) Bill Scher (Reporter, Washington Monthly; @billscher) Edgar Vargas (Producer, WTTW's "Firstland: Homeless - The Migrant Experience") Lisa Graves (Founder and executive director, True North Research; @thelisagraves)
I'm always honored when Lisa Graves joins me to lend her legal expertise to the discussion about the trials and tribulations of TFG and, of course, the machinations of the once Supreme, now Extreme, Court. Lisa has the bona fides... she served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Policy Development/Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice under Attorneys General Janet Reno and John Ashcroft, Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more, and as an adjunct law professor at George Washington University Law School. She also worked as the Senior Legislative Strategist for the ACLU on national security and civil liberties, and held other posts. Although Lisa generously shares her knowledge with us on this show, she does so in her capacity as a private citizen. These days, her day job is as the founder and Executive Director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group that works with journalists and other researchers to shine a bright light on the dark money fueling regressive agendas targeting vital institutions in our republic, such as our courts and public schools. Graves is one of the nation's foremost experts in exposing how special interests distort public policy and try to thwart the public's interest in a thriving and inclusive democracy and to impede measures to protect our environment and mitigate climate change. I don't run through her CV and experience as often as I should when she's on the show, so I wanted to put it down in writing... Today, Lisa joins me to talk about the beginning of the first-ever criminal trial of a former president, about that former guy's inability to follow the most basic rules of decorum inside a court of law (or anywhere else for that matter), David Pecker's testimony that proves Trump talks about himself when he decries "FAKE NEWS" and more. On the SCOTUS front, tomorrow - the final day they'll hear arguments this term - they'll hear Trump's farce of a claim that he enjoys "absolute immunity" as a former president... of course today, the antediluvian men on the court showed that they believe they should control every aspect of a woman's life, including her health care. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
The Lincoln Project's Stuart Stevens discusses the disastrous choices Donald Trump's presidential campaign is making. True North Research's Lisa Graves tails the nefarious plans of the Republican Attorneys General Association. Then we'll talk to legal historian Mary Ziegler about the latest aggressions against women's bodily autonomy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's not quite red-yarn-on-a-corkboard, but given how often we've been thinking about the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) over the years, it may as well be. The group has become a vital component of the conservative legal movement, with pay-to-play access afforded to corporate donors to boot. Despite all the money changing hands and obvious conflicts of interest, few have heard of them - and that's very intentional. This week we're joined by Lisa Graves of True North Research to talk about how an organization representing the chief legal officers in half the states in the union has become a national policy juggernaut, pushing legislation and litigation to assist polluters, harm women and LGBTQ families, torment immigrants and even steal elections, all absent any significant oversight or consequences. In this week's bonus plus segment, Slate's very own Mark Joseph Stern joins to discuss coverage of the oral arguments in the mifepristone case (including the hugely significant takeaway most of the analysis missed), and the reasons Neil Gorsuch hates nationwide injunctions. And finally, following on from last week, thinking about the language we use to describe first trimester abortions. Sign up for Slate Plus now to listen and support our show. Many people have never heard of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC – but for 50 years, the group has been the driving force behind some of the most extreme policies in this country. Behind closed doors, ALEC brings corporate lobbyists and state politicians together to draft and vote on model bills that aim to free corporations from regulations, regardless of the impacts on people and the planet. Labor law, environmental law, health and safety, voting — no cause is off-limits. Our guests say ALEC and its wealthy pool of funders are a real threat, but there are ways to take action and progress has already been made. In 2023, a diverse coalition of groups, including Greenpeace, Color of Change, the Center for Media and Democracy and more, is calling out the anti-democratic impact of ALEC by using the hashtag #50YearsOfHarm. Congressman Ro Khanna of California's 17th Congressional District, a leading progressive in the House, and Lisa Graves, Executive Director of True North Research and President of the Center for Media and Democracy, two of the preeminent national watchdog groups investigating dark money, join Laura Flanders to unpack it all. And in her closing commentary Laura fills us in on the other side of the story in state houses: the Democrats' have their own project in place these days. Lisa Graves is the founder and Executive Director of True North Research, a national investigative watchdog group that exposes the shadowy machinations of dark money funders like Leonard Leo, Barre Seid, Harlan Crow, Charles Koch, Dick Uihlein, and Rob Arkley, and their front groups. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more. Her op-eds have run in the most prominent newspapers and magazines in the country, and she is a frequent guest on MSNBC. Well, they sure took their sweet time to stick a dagger in the heart of democracy and now the Supreme Extreme Court is dragging it's feet before it strikes the death blow. Rather than immediately put us out of (or increase our) misery quickly (like they did in Bush v Gore 2000), they're draaagggging it out another six long weeks. Yes, the court will hear TFG's bullshit case where he's claiming "absolute immunity" for his actions related to the January 6 insurrection that he led! It took the court three weeks just to say they would hear the case (also a horrendous decision), and now they're obviously delaying hearing the case. One can only assume it's to help their dear leader, the twice impeached, orange tinted, failed former occupant of the White House. To add insult to injury, Clarence Thomas - who never should have been confirmed in the first place - refuses to recuse himself, despite overwhelming evidence that his wife, Ginni Thomas, not only participated in the planning of the Jan 6 coup attempt, but was a major instigator and funder of the whole mess. To help us understand this and how the laws have been so perverted, LISA GRAVES returns to the show. Lisa is executive director of True North Research, which investigates and exposes those distorting American democracy and public policy. She then went on to helm the Center for Media and Democracy, the group who gave us ALEC Exposed and who took on and publicly exposed the Koch Brothers. Previously, Graves was Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice in the Office of Legal Policy/Policy Development and served as Chief Counsel for Nominations for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee for Senator Patrick Leahy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message
I had hoped that the Supreme Court would have handed down its decision on Trump's move to appeal the DC Circuit court's ruling that he has some made-up 'absolute immunity' from virtually any crime because he once occupied the Oval Office, but no such luck. Perhaps tomorrow when at least one decision from the Extreme Justices is expected. Regardless, Lisa Graves returns to the show today in her capacity as a private citizen who happens to have impeccable legal bona fides (just check out her bio at truenorthresearch.org).I'll get her thoughts on when, and how the court may rule, and many other issues including True North Research's latest dive into Leonard Leo and dark money, and John Oliver's offer to get Clarence Thomas to resign from the high court. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

The Supreme Court justices seem to think so. The Court recently adopted a so-called “code of conduct,” but with no enforcement mechanism in place, it stands no chance of cleaning up bad behavior. Lisa Graves of True North Research joins Senator Whitehouse on this episode to unpack the new code and its shortfalls. Also on this episode, Senator Whitehouse breaks down what happened in the Senate Judiciary Committee as Republican Senators unsuccessfully rolled out every play in the book to try to prevent the committee from subpoenaing the Court's billionaire benefactors. Follow @SenWhitehouse on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for all the latest updates on Making the Case, and @TheLisaGraves for more on her work to hold the powerful accountable.
I tried to keep the title of today's episode light, though I'm feeling anything but. Yes, I was glad to hear that TFG was compelled to testify today, but it was more of the same from this teflon turd who gets away with crap that would find anyone else displaying the same juvenile lack of decorum bound and gagged at the defendant's table. But he does and says what he wants without a care in the world because he knows, as he's stated more than once, he could shoot someone on 5th Ave and get away with it.Trump did make history today, I believe, in that he is the first former Oval Office occupant to stand trial - civil or criminal (and face it, he's got both in the works). And today, history was made, as embarrassing as it is for this country. But we have lots to be ashamed of right now, with more gumming up the works further each day.The always awesome Lisa Graves is back on the show today, sharing her personal observations on this historic day. There's a parade of legal *experts* being trotted out by every cable news channel blaring their skewed take on the days' news endlessly. But I'd listen to Lisa Graves above all others. She's the real deal.Lisa is a DOJ veteran, having served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in both the Bill Clinton and GW Bush administrations under AGs Janet Reno and John Ashcroft/ Alberto Gonzales. She also served in the Senate Judiciary Committee as Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy, as Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts with oversight of the Financial Disclosure Office and more, and as an adjunct law professor at George Washington University Law School. Well, now we know that imminent can mean eventually! Fani Willis said charges against the former guy were imminent way back in January. But last night, right around 8pm ET, the Grand Jury filed back into the Fulton County courtroom and handed the judge the indictment-- a whopping 98 pages, 41 counts and, in addition to Cheeto Musselini, 18 other defendants and 30 un-indicted co-conspirators.As today is that other Tuesday, GottaLaff is here. And we're joined by the go-to legal expert of the Nicole Sandler Show, Lisa Graves, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General under both Janet Reno and John Ashcroft in the Clinton and W Bush administrations, now founder and director of True North Research. Now that's an indictment panel I'd listen to!
August is supposed to be the slow news month, and Fridays in August non-eventful. But nothing is normal these days. Lots of news broke today, most of it dealing with the myriad of legal cases brewing in and around Washington DC. Thankfully Lisa Graves is here today to help us dissect it all.Lisa's got the bona fides too... She's worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee and in the DOJ! She was Deputy Assistant Attorney General in both the Clinton and W Bush administrations, and these days exposes the bad guys as she heads up True North Research.Today, I get to pick her brain about the the three indictments already filed for TFG and the one likely coming out of Fulton County, GA next week. And yes, today's breaking news from the first hearing in the Trump Jan 6 case, a special counsel for Hunter Biden, and WTF is up with the Supreme, er, Extreme Court Injustices, especially the schnorrer Clarence Thomas.
This week I welcome Alyssa Bowen back to the show. Alyssa is a Senior Researcher and Managing Editor for the progressive watchdog group, True North Research. Tonight we'll be talking about her recent article in TruthOut, "A Jan. 6 “Moms” Group Funded by Big Lie Donors Is Stoking Voter Suppression." And, we'll give you the spoiler right up front: It's NOT Moms for Liberty we'll be talking about. The right-wing extremist group “Moms for America” has been flying under the radar as it works to undermine our rights. Alyssa received her PhD in History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2021 with an interest in fascism and antifascism, solidarity and social movements, immigration/exile and transnational history. She has bylines in the Nation and in Truthout, where she is a regular contributor. More of her public writing can be found on True North Research's website and Substack. When most people think about the current Supreme Court, one of the first names that comes to mind is Donald Trump, who appointed three of its Justices. But there's another name that's arguably more important. And that is the right-wing billionaires' fixer, Leonard Leo. In this episode, Senator Whitehouse is once again joined by Rep. Hank Johnson, Slate's Dahlia Lithwick, and Lisa Graves of True North Research to discuss the recent history of the right-wing scheme to capture the Court. These experts will discuss many of the biggest names in the Court capture effort, along with the phony front groups they used to prop it up. After weeks of controversy, piled upon intrigue, heaped with scandal and topped with crisis at the Supreme Court, it can be hard to get your bearings. What's illegal, what's unethical, what's just a bit hinky? And what does it really mean for an institution that is about to hand down decisions that reach into every part of our lives, from justice to climate, from youtube to universities? On this week's Amicus, Dahlia Lithwick is joined by Lisa Graves from True North Research. Lisa ia a veteran investigator of the dark money spigot that has been flooding the Supreme Court and rewarding some of the justices, and the causes and people close to their hearts. If you can't see the woods for the trees, Lisa will paint you a picture. And that painting will, of course, include; Clarence Thomas, Leonard Leo, Harlan Crow and Mark Paoletta. In this week's Amicus Plus segment, Dahlia is joined by Slate's Mark Joseph Stern to talk about the possible end of Chevron deference the impacts for the administrative state, the Texas abortion case that is a case study in SB8 working exactly as it was intended, and why it is so puzzling that the Justices won't rescue themselves from the ethics quagmire that's sinking trust in SCOTUS. This week I welcome Alyssa Bowen back to the show. Alyssa is a Senior Researcher and Managing Editor for the progressive watchdog group, True North Research. Tonight we'll be talking about her recent article in TruthOut, "The Right has Expanded Its Dark Money Strategy for Dominating School Boards." If we thought we'd get a break from extremism in our school board elections, we were VERY wrong. There is no such thing as a slow news day any more. With so much happening, we'll just hone in on two stories today. And they both deal with disaster, though of different varieties. Hurricane Ian - huge disaster. Here in Florida, where I live, the damage and despair is everywhere, even in the safe pocket in the southeastern section that probably the safest place to be in the whole state. Today, I think everyone here is feeling incredibly lucky. In fact, we should all go out and buy lottery tickets. But the reality is, we're far from lucky. The losses will be enormous, in both lives and treasure. And good luck if you hope to ever be able to purchase homeowners insurance in Florida again. Today, I'll speak with Daily Kos' senior staff writer April Siese who wrote today, "We need to drastically rethink what recovery looks like as the climate crisis worsens." But we'll start the show with our friend Lisa Graves, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General under AGs Janet Reno and John Ashcroft (in the Clinton and W administrations), now founder/ editor at True North Research. Lisa is my go-to expert on all legal/justice issues, and boy do we have a doozy! 'Judge' Aileen Cannon was appointed by Trump; Trump hand-picked her to do his bidding regarding the cache of classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago. Her first rulings dealing with the special master were overturned on appeal, but she gave Trump cover again on Thursday with a ruling that even this non-attorney can tell you was grade a bullshit. I'll ask Lisa about this latest head-scratcher. And of course, we'll talk about the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas being an election denier and doubling down on that sentiment yesterday when she answered questions from the House Select Committee investigating January 6.
It's Banned Books Week and have we got a show for you. Tonight I welcome Alyssa Bowen back to the show and the timing couldn't be better. Alyssa is a Senior Researcher and Managing Editor for the progressive watchdog group, True North Research. We'll be talking about their new report, "The Disinfo Playbook Targeting Our Public Schools & Elections" and Alyssa's related article for TruthOut, "Dark Money Groups are Trying to Buy the Midterm Elections for the GOP." True North's new report is a "guide to the anti-public school front groups - like the Independent Women's Forum (IWF) adn Moms for Liberty - and their Dark Money-funded efforts to censor books, disrupt equality, and impede fact-based learning by kids." Alyssa received her PhD in History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2021 with an interest in fascism and antifascism, solidarity and social movements, immigration/exile and transnational history. On this week's show, I welcome Alyssa Bowen back to the program. Alyssa is a Senior Researcher and Managing Editor at the progressive watchdog organization True North Research. Tonight our focus turns to the right-wing dark money that is funding the anti-abortion movement's push to take over state legislatures and deepen the devastation wrought by the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Follow Alyssa on Twitter @AlyssaAnnBowen. It's been a busy week, and it's only Wednesday. But today gives us a break in the considerable legal activity this week. Monday was a holiday. Tuesday gave us five new opinions from the Supreme Court in the morning, followed by another mind blowing hearing from the House Select Committee investigating the events surrounding the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol. Things pick up again tomorrow morning at 10ET, as the court will release more end-of-term opinions (still 13 to go as of today), and the House Select Committee convenes its fifth public hearing at 3pm ET. And, for good measure, the Supreme Court will hand down even more opinions on Friday morning, again beginning at 10ET. So there's much to wade through, and I have tons of questions. So I invited my old friend Lisa Graves to join us today. Lisa is my go-to legal expert, and she's perfect to address today's news. Today, Lisa leads True North Research (truenorthresearch.org). Her legal bona fides are more than impressive: She served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy at the U.S. Department of Justice in the Clinton Administration, Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, Deputy Chief of the Article III Judges Division of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, and as an adjunct law professor at George Washington University Law School. She also served as the Senior Legislative Strategist for the ACLU on national security and testified as an expert before committees in both houses of Congress. In 2018, she helped shape the national conversation on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination. Yeah, you get the idea. So, Lisa is my guest for most of the hour today. We'll talk about the hearings, the Supreme Court decisions, and why the US is the only nation on the planet that seems afraid to prosecute a former president, regardless of how corrupt he was...
I'm still reeling from the leaked draft of a SCOTUS opinion that we weren't supposed to see for another 7 or 8 weeks. But thanks to someone with a conscience who had access to the first draft of Justice Alito's opinion in the case that will determine the future of women's right to choose what happens with our bodies, we have the information early. That should allow our side to fight back effectively, but it is the Democratic Party we're talking about here, and they've been less than effective stewards of our democracy! I've got some audio and some opinions to share, but today I want to hear from you too. So the phone lines are open at 954-889-6410 (or you can always Skype in to nicolesandler)... And we'll also check in with my favorite legal expert, Lisa Graves of True North Research, who spent years in the trenches as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy in the Clinton DOJ, and a long list of other credentials that make her the perfect person to weigh in on what's happening now. Thankfully, she's way more optimistic than I am, so I'll try to adopt some of her positivity!
Thank goodness that's over. I'm talking about the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. It was, to use an ugly but fitting term, a modern day lynching. The Republicans on the committee went for blood. They mercilessly attacked the most qualified candidate for the court that's been nominated in decades. Today, I'll try to present some of the high and low points of the last four days. I'll be joined by my favorite legal expert. Lisa Graves' day job is executive director and Editor in Chief of True North Research. She spent years as an attorney at various levels throughout the government, including a stint as Chief Counsel for Nominations for Senator Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, making her a perfect authority to comment on the circus surrounding this week's hearings.
On this episode, I welcome Alyssa Bowen to the show. Alyssa has a Ph.D. in history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is currently senior researcher and managing editor for the progressive watchdog group True North Research where she tracks and writes about dark money in U.S. politics. She has written for The Nation and is a regular contributor to Truthout. We'll be talking about her new article in TruthOut, “Dark Money is Behind ‘Women's Groups' Attacking Biden's Supreme Court Pick.” In that piece, Alyssa shines a bright light on the deep pockets funding right-wing women's groups such as the “Independent Women's Forum” and “Concerned Women for America” who are seeking to sink Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to fill Justice Stephen Breyer's seat. We'll also talk about her research and reporting on the dark money funding “concerned moms” groups leading the extremist charge in local school boards. Editor-in-Chief of True North Research, Lisa Graves opines on how the Koch network hijacked the way on Covid. It is time to hold the climate change perpetrators to account and make them pay. The other day, The Daily Show took out a full page ad in the NY and LA Times, offering the legal services of Trevor Noah & Associates & Sons for those you did an insurrection and need their protection. The ad also exclaims that "Because your only crime was listening to the president. Also felony assault." I Tweeted a photo of it yesterday that has truly gone viral. As of the moment I'm writing this, it has 22 thousand likes. There's a phone number on the ad. We'll call it on the show today. Then we'll deal with another legal issue: the Supreme Court! Although they're not in session right now, they released an 8 page opinion overturning Joe Biden's eviction moratorium extension. It was 6-3 along ideological lines. So much about that is wrong, so we'll call on Lisa Graves, former DoJ attorney under two presidents and now founder and director of True North Research. There, she investigates the bad actors and follows the money. Guess who allegedly bankrolled this Supreme Court challenge to the eviction moratorium..... Charles Koch, a regular subject of Lisa's investigations.
The Supreme Court wrapped up the current term this morning by issuing its two final rulings. They saved the biggest and most damaging for last. Lisa Graves of True North Research, a former Deputy Assistant Attorney General under Clinton, joins in at the top of the show to explain the ramifications of the court's decisions on our voting rights and the continuation of dark money in politics. In the second half hour, it's Howie Klein time. We'll talk about the progressive challenger to Rand Paul, Pelosi's 1-6 committee members, and Pramila Jayapal's take on Marjorie Taylor Greene. Is it Friday yet?
When government is poisoned and paralyzed by billionaire money and libertarian ideology, it’s time for GOP elected officials to party...and suppress the vote! Lisa Graves of True North Research joins Thom to discuss the Supreme Court, the Koch Brothers and big money.
We knew that there weren't 17 Republicans with integrity in the Senate, but that doesn't make it any easier when they put their jobs and political party ahead of the nation. But that's exactly what they did on Saturday as the second impeachment trial of Donal Trump ended with an acquittal. And as he tends to do, Trump won by losing the popular vote! The final tally was 57 for conviction, 43 against. And he wins! Opposite world indeed. Lisa Graves heads True North Research, but she has served as Deputy Asst Attorney General in the Clinton administration, and Chief Counsel for Nominations for Sen. Patrick Leahy on the Senate Judiciary Committee, among other high level legal posts in the US government. She'll join us today to try to answer my myriad of questions about what happened and why...
This episode will cover the election recap, including Prop 15, Local bond and parcel tax elections, and the National election. With special guests:John Fensterwald, Editor-At-Large at EdSourceTimothy McLarney, Ph.D., President at True North Research, Inc.Bonnie Moss, Principal at CliffordMoss
I've been watching the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings for Amy Coney Barrett so you don't have to, and I never want to hear the words " I don't want to express a view on that" again. Thankfully, for the second half of today's show, I'm joined by Lisa Graves of True North Research. She most certainly will express her views, and she's got the bona fides to weigh in on this nominee as a former counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee under then-chair Patrick Leahy and more.
Lisa Graves returns to the show today. She is one of the most amazing people I know! Lisa is Executive Director of True North Research, where she investigates the influence of dark money on public policy and our democracy. Lisa testified before the House Oversight Committee on Monday about the latest problems with the USPS and its new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. And with her experience in the Dept of Justice as a Deputy Assistant AG, she's uniquely qualified to weigh in on the behavior of AG William Barr. And I'll ask her about all of it.
