The most goals in a La Liga Madrid Derby in decades. The famous "manita". Are Atletico back? Are Real Madrid weaker than we actually thought after remaining undefeated so far this season? Probably the most entertaining Madrid Derby we've experienced in a decade and so much to unpack this week! Plus, we dive into Rheon's thoughts on the USMNT and some of the recent results in the Premier League.
It felt like a significant weekend in the Premier League, so Musa and Ryan begin with Crystal Palace's 2-1 win over Liverpool, to inflict a first defeat of the season on Arne Slot's side, while Oliver Glasner remains the only unbeaten manager in the league this season (02:25). They then move on to Arsenal's late win over Newcastle United, to close the gap at the top (13:13) and round-up the rest of the Premier League results (19:36). In La Liga, Atleti won the derby 5-2 over Real Madrid, coming from 2-1 down, in an incredible game at the Metropolitano (26:23), while Barcelona went top, as did Milan in Serie A (39:07), following their 2-1 win over Napoli at San Siro.London listeners, tickets for our London live show at the Southbank Centre, tickets for which are on sale here. For more podcasts each week, ad-free and in full, plus access to the Stadio Social Club and much more, become a Stadio member by going to patreon.com/stadio. It's the Madrid derby this Saturday as Atlético host Real Madrid at the Metropolitano, and ahead of the big game we're getting into some La Liga history. There's a thrilling story of how two Racing Santander players defied Generalissimo Franco's fascist regime, a look at the man largely in Santiago Bernabéu's shadow who did so much to make Real Madrid what it is today, and the tale of how a flying Atléti winger became a Nazi spy. Each of those is a chapter of Once Upon a Time in La Liga, a new book out this month. Author Brendan Madden joins the show to share them, talk about his path from data journalist to football storyteller, and of course talk about how the current versions of Atléti and Los Blancos are looking coming into this weekend's marquee fixture.Be sure to pick up a copy of the book: https://www.pitchpublishing.co.uk/shop/once-upon-time-la-ligaAnd if you like what you hear in this episode, leave us a rating and review! Jimbo's joined by Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús and Seb Stafford-Bloor for a deep-dive into domestic and European matters across the continent. Last week's Champions League first legs left some results more conclusive than others… we're looking at you, PSV 1-7 Arsenal! But there's still plenty of intrigue with the ties between Liverpool and PSG, Real and Atleti and Barca and Benfica finely poised. In La Liga, Real warmed up for their trip across the capital with a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, while Atleti were on the wrong end of that scoreline in a dramatic late defeat at Girona. Meanwhile Barcelona's game with Osasuna was postponed just 20 minutes before kick-off following the sudden death of first team doctor Carles Miñarro Garcia. In Ligue 1, PSG's B-team made light work of Rennes to move 16 points clear at the top of the table - while Paulo Fonseca began his nine month (!) touchline ban as he watched his side beat Nice 2-0 from the stands to put themselves right in the mix for European football next season. Max Callegari - host of Pressing on Canale 5 - joins us to run the rule over all the Serie A action, which included humiliation for Juve, a first win in six for Napoli and spookily similar comebacks for Milan and Inter. And in the Bundesliga, there was history as for the first time in nearly 20 years Bayern, Leverkusen and Dortmund all lost on the same matchday. Produced by Lucy Oliva. RUNNING ORDER: • PART 1: Moments of the weekend and Champions League teases (00.40) • PART 2: La Liga review - Mixed fortunes for Madrid sides as tragedy hits Barca (09.40) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - PSG flying high as Fonseca begins his touchline ban (19.35) • PART 4: Serie A review - Juve out of the title race as Milan sides stage 3-2 comebacks (33.30) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - big boys all beaten as Bayer, Bayern and Dortmund lose (45.30) Learn more about your ad choices. Billi (@SGPSoccer) breaks down all 8 of the Champions League Round of 16 1st Leg matches, taking place tomorrow and on Wednesday. The ties of the round will see a Madrid Derby between Real and Atletico, an all-German clash between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen and a battle between the runaway leaders of France and England, as Paris SG take on Liverpool. Both Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool enjoy such a stranglehold on their domestic leagues that continental dominance is moving further up the agenda and that should make for an entertaining first leg of their Champions League knockout tie in the French capital on Wednesday. Billi (@SGPSoccer) looks at the current Champions League Futures market, going into the Round of 16. This episode breaks down all 8 of ties, before concluding by glossing over the outright winner market. The ties of the round will see a Madrid Derby between Real and Atletico, an all-German clash between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen and a battle between the runaway leaders of France and England, as Paris SG take on Liverpool. Real Madrid and Barcelona currently sit at the top of the market, but Billi believes the value could potentially lie elsewhere, in what's widely considered to be a very open competition this season.
