Julius Manapul transforms the pain of displacement into powerful art that challenges colonial structures and celebrates queer identity. As a Filipinx immigrant who arrived in Canada in the 90s, Manapul found themselves caught between languages and cultures—a displacement that led them to embrace visual communication as a universal language transcending verbal barriers.Manapul's multimedia practice spans sculpture, installation, performance, and experimental film, but perhaps most striking is their transformation of pornographic imagery into intricate butterfly patterns. These works initially attract viewers with their beauty before challenging them with the revelation of their source material. "It's fascinating how the work never changed," Manapul observes. "It's people's perspective that changed." This moment of realisation become a thread Manapul continually explores in their art and teaching practice as an Assistant Professor at OCAD University. Their most recent exhibition "Sila/Siya/Ako" (they, them, me in Tagalog) examines the connections between religion, colonisation in the Philippines and the racism experienced within queer spaces. Manapul juxtaposes Catholic symbolism with gay club music, highlighting how both institutions—ostensibly places of belonging—often alienate those who don't conform to dominant ideals. The exhibition's mannequins, adorned with replicas of King Philip's armour crafted from gay porn images and whitewashing products, confront viewers with the ongoing effects of colonisation in contemporary Filipino culture.Manapul shares career triumphs and how they overcame barriers coming up in Toronto's art scene. When traditional gallery spaces initially rejected Manapul's work, they strategically self-funded exhibitions and submitted to international calls—finding recognition in Europe before gaining traction in Canada. This resourcefulness reflects their powerful advice to emerging artists: "If there's no space for you at the table, make that space." Now an Assistant Professor at OCAD University, Manapul creates the representation they lacked growing up, proving that persistence and connection are essential tools for artistic success.Want to explore more transformative art that challenges cultural boundaries? Interview at 11 a.m. Friday!Scott, thanks for being on the AIPT Comics podcast, this is your 7th time on the show, always a pleasure____. To start, you've got Clear, Night of the Ghoul, and We Have Demons all out this month, what made these 3 the best of the 8 planned titles at Comixology as the first to release? All three works feel incredibly new, fresh, and maybe even a new gear for your work compared to previous years, was there anything you were able to do under comiXology as far as “breaking rules” in comics storytelling you go to do here? What went into the strategy of doing 3 series a month?Something I adore about your writing is your creation stories, you've done a few, and We Have Demons has a great one, heck night of the ghoul has an origin that feels mythical, what inspires you to tackle creation myths? We Have Demons is so compelling, in part, because of the way it recontextualizes faith. It actually opens with a warning at the start of the book, was this warning always part of the plan, or did this come in later? Two of these books are penciled and colored by the artist (Manapul and Francavilla), do you find books colored and drawn by 1 artist come out different in any way?Was there a specific movie or director that inspired Night of the Ghoul? You're doing some amazing work on your Substack with classes too, I recently watched the course talking about Donny Cates' Venom. Do you find yourself analyzing comics even when you're reading for pleasure?Favorite scary novel, movie, comic?

Francis Manapul is a jack of several trades: drawing, inking, painting, coloring, writing, etc. I visited Toronto, Canada for a few days where Francis lives and took a shot that he may want to be a guest on my podcast. Francis took some time out of his busy writing and drawing schedule for the new TRINITY ReBirth book that includes Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to talk with me. And boy what a talk it was. The timing of my visit to Toronto was odd to say the least. Francis had some deep loss right before our talk. Losing his friend and his biological father in the same day due to different circumstances. Francis had only seen his father once in 30 years when he visited the Philippines, Francis' place of birth. We talk about how his relationship with his father now affects his storyline and work in Trinity, we talk about his time on The Flash, Geoff Johns, losing a loved one, guilt, regret, family responsibility, and so much more. It gets pretty intense at times but there are also some lighter moments. I hope you'll enjoy our conversation. I know I did. Please Listen, Please Share, Please Enjoy! 'Trinity' 1 by Francis Manapul, with letters by Steve Wands, from DC Comics, is today's interruption of @TwoPlai's research break on the Paul List:Comics Analysis Podcast. In a bit of a meandering episode (sorry!), Paul describes why Manapul is the consummate current DC artist for his tastes, a perfect synthesis of various influences that works perfectly for the Rebirth moment. (Error correction: At one point, Paul says "Wildstorm" when he means "Top Cow." Sorry again!) The artistic and storytelling qualities that Manapul brings to this gathering table of DC's three iconic heroes is the kind of match that makes this book a treat to read. And while he's at it, Paul gets into why the Surface Pro that Manapul has been pitching is a pretty nice device for a comics person.
