Ohio State will face off with Utah today in the 2022 Rose Bowl. It's an incredibly intriguing matchup as a number of opt-outs and injuries make things truly unpredictable. How much will incoming defensive coordinator Jim Knowles impact the Buckeyes' defensive game plan? How will the absence of players like Haskell Garrett, Antwuan Jackson, Cody Simon, Sevyn Banks, and Marcus Williamson impact the defense?Buckeye Scoop's Xs and Os guru Ross Fulton joins host Tom Orr to discuss all of that and much more.
It's the final week of the 2021 Ohio State football season, and we're in Los Angeles to watch it all unfold.Although we arrived in California one day later than expected thanks to travel issues, both members of the Real Pod Wednesdays crew are in Los Angeles to cover the Rose Bowl, and we spent the entirety of this week's show previewing Saturday's clash between Ohio State and Utah.First up, we talk about the biggest news of the week so far – that Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Nicholas Petit-Frere and Haskell Garrett are opting out of the Rose Bowl – and debate whether the absences at wide receiver or on the line of scrimmage will affect the Buckeyes more. We also talk about four other potential player absences – Sevyn Banks, Cody Simon, Antwuan Jackson and Marcus Williamson – and who will need to step up for the Buckeyes to replace those who will be unavailable. Then, we dive deeper into the matchup with Utah, looking at why the Utes will present another massive test for Ohio State's run defense – and why stopping the run will be the key to a victory for the Buckeyes – and where Utah's defense will test the Buckeyes most and where it could be most susceptible.Beginning at the 41:35 mark, we make our predictions for how the Rose Bowl will play out. While we're both predicting very similar final scores for Saturday's game, we disagree on which team will come out on top in what we both believe will be a close contest. Finally, we discuss why it's likely Ohio State's future plan for its coaching staff will be revealed much sooner than later after the Rose Bowl even though we haven't yet heard who will be leaving the staff and who else (if anyone) Jim Knowles could bring with him.

We finally have real football to talk about at Buckeye Talk, after a Tuesday night Zoom call with defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs and a couple of cornerbacks provided new insight into what Ohio State's defense might look like this fall.Nathan Baird, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means begin with those cornerbacks, including potential starting slot cornerback Marcus Williamson. He doesn't fit Coombs' ideal look for an OSU corner and yet he recruited him anyway back before the Buckeyes employed a slot cornerback full-time. Now he becomes the missing piece that perhaps allows Coombs to keep his long, athletic options, such as Sevyn Banks and Cameron Brown, on the outside with Shaun Wade. Also, why does Cameron Martinez sound like such an obvious long-term option at that slot corner? The Buckeye Talk crew bounces around the rest of the defense. How much of a problem is OSU's perceived lack of depth at defensive tackle? Could the tweaked defensive alignments Coombs mentioned Tuesday become a part of the Buckeye defense as soon as 2020? And looking ahead fo more interviews later this week, what do we most urgently need to learn about the OSU offense? Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr recap everything that was said during Tuesday's Zoom call with Buckeye defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs and OSU cornerbacks Sevyn Banks and Marcus Williamson. The fellas discuss who is now the leader in the slot cornerback race, as well as what it means for the rest of the defense. All of this and much more.
Shaun Wade may have been a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft if he had turned pro after last season. Instead, he's back for a fourth year at Ohio State as one of the best cornerbacks in the nation. On this Buckeye Talk episode from cleveland.com, Doug Lesmerises, Stephen Means and Nathan Baird continue their position group previews with the cornerbacks. Wade is a sure thing, Cam Brown and Sevyn Banks are expected starters, and Tyreke Johnson and Marcus Williamson are veterans who could play roles in the secondary. And, of course, Kerry Coombs is back coaching the secondary as the Buckeyes' defensive coordinator. After this, there are only two more position group episodes left, so make sure you're catching all of them to get a full look at the 2020 Ohio State football roster.
