John 6:60-71,When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. “Here you go, take a look at this.”That's really all I said, but I'll tell you the whole story …Years ago I worked for a Christian resource ministry called Desiring God (it's a ministry we're still connected to and love) — well, back in those days our office was on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis, and for a short season I worked in the customer service department. My desk was closest to the door right next to the sidewalk, and from time to time if we had a visitor drop in, it was part of my job to greet them.So one day a gentleman came inside and he said that he'd like to discuss how we could all work together to blend several different religions to become one. He said it didn't make any sense for religions to be divided because they all basically ‘believed the same things.' This guy was a seeker, and I wasn't trying to discourage him from that, but I told him that all religions did not believe the same things, and that the Christian gospel is unlike anything else, and as a example, I said “Here you go, take a look at this” … I handed him a book then titled, What Jesus Demands of the World by John Piper — it's a book 50-chapters long, and each chapter focuses on a different command Jesus gives, and I figured that if the guy read some of the things that Jesus actually said, he'd change his mind. Well the guy came back the next week and he was mad. He gave me back the book and said, “I'd like to teach a thing or two to the author of this book!”He had read what Jesus says and he was offended … and I still think about this from time to time, and I wonder: Why exactly was he offended? What part in particular did he not like? And then the bigger, existential question: Why was he offended by what Jesus says and I'm not (or at least not ultimately)? This is the question: Why do some people love Jesus and others don't?You ever thought about that before? Our passage today is all about this. At the end of Chapter 6, the longest chapter in the Gospel of John, we're going to see the human response to what Jesus has said and there are two main lessons we find here — and the relevance of these lessons will become obvious. I think we're gonna be able to see ourselves in this passage, but before we look at the first lesson, let's pray again and ask for God's help.Father, you know better than any of us all the different places we're coming from this morning, and you know what you want to say to us through your word. Would you, in these moments, open our hearts to hear from you? Give us humble hearts to receive the words of your Son, in faith. We ask in Jesus's name, amen. The first thing we learn in this passage …1. Those offended by Jesus are expected. Here at the end of Chapter 6, John narrows the focus from the “crowd” (which he's mentioned four times in this chapter) to now he says “disciples.” But when he uses the word “disciples” here, he's not thinking about the twelve disciples, but he's talking about followers of Jesus more generally. So imagine three categories of people: There's the “crowd,” the broadest number of people who had the miracle lunch (10,000 or more when you count men, women, and children). Then there's “the Twelve” mentioned in verse 67 and 70 (these are the twelve disciples whose names we know; they were closest to Jesus). But then, in the middle, there's who John calls “disciples” — which is less than the crowd but more than the Twelve. Somewhere in-between (these are folks who followed Jesus after the miracle lunch and they've heard all of his teaching in Chapter 6).And according to verse 60, of this middle group, these more generic disciples, “many” of them did not like what Jesus was saying. The collective voice of these disciples is at the end of verse 60. They said:“This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”They're talking about all that Jesus has been teaching, but especially the part about his flesh and blood, and we know from verse 61 that this was a grumbly statement. Jesus knew they were grumbling. Verse 60 was not a humble, teachable response — they weren't saying, “Jesus, we don't get it, would you help us get it?” — nah, they were frustrated with him — which means they were angry. You Ain't Seen Nothing YetAt the beginning of this chapter these people were well-fed, now they're fed-up, and look what Jesus says to them at the end of verse 61. He says, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? …”What Jesus does here is really important. There's a tone I don't want us to miss. So just to make sure, everybody find Jesus's question there at the end of verse 61. I'm gonna read it again. I want you to get it. Find verse 61. That question at the end, Jesus says:“Do you take offense at this?”He's saying: Do you take offense at this, my teaching? Oh you ain't seen nothing yet!Jesus is saying: You think my teaching is difficult. You don't like what I'm saying. Just wait until you see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before! That's verse 62 — now what is Jesus talking about?Well, at one level, Jesus is talking about the final manifestation of his true identity. We know from the start of this Gospel that Jesus is the Word who was in the beginning. Jesus was with God, Jesus is God! — Jesus is God the Son, the one through whom all things were made, and he has all authority over all things, and in his ascension he is going to resume his seat on his throne in glory. That's in view here. But also, on another level in the Gospel of John, the event of Jesus's exaltation — his resurrection and ascension — is combined with the path he takes to get there, which is the path of his cross. So in this Gospel, Jesus being “lifted up,” before it means lifted in glory, it means lifted in shame. Before the ascension of Jesus took him up above the heavens, he was nailed up on a cross. And John, the writer, intends that double meaning of ascension in this Gospel.Tripping Over the TreeSo Jesus, in verse 62, is talking about his cross, and he's arguing here from the lesser to the greater. The cross of Christ is the ultimate scandal. It's the most offensive fact of Jesus — that the Messiah would be crucified! That's outrageous! It's insane! So Jesus is saying: If you can't handle my teaching (lesser), there's no way you're gonna be able to handle my crucifixion (greater). The teaching of Jesus is small beans compared to how he's going to be killed. See, Jesus is explaining in verse 62 — If you're bothered by my sayings, just wait until my sacrifice. If the difficulty of my doctrine undoes you, what about the degradation of my dying? If you're troubled by the truth you'll certainly trip over the tree. And this kind of tripping, this stumbling over the cross, is to be expected. The apostle Paul tells us this, 1 Corinthians 1:21, “It pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles…”The cross of Christ has been the problem for people going on now for two thousand years, and it's still the problem today. In fact, today, there's a lot of people who would at least ‘say' that they like the teachings of Jesus. Now they have his own version of his teaching — they're probably not thinking about the over 20 times he talks about hell — but overall, most people are okay with Jesus as a moral teacher. It is his cross that is offensive. Why? It's because the cross makes a very negative assessment of humanity. Because the first thing the cross says is that we are all sinners who need to be saved. Bad News FirstA few years ago I met a neighbor at a coffee shop and I invited them to our church, and they asked me right away, “Oh, is your church affirming?” Now, they were talking about gender and sexuality issues, but I just told them that our church doesn't affirm anybody — “All are welcome, none are affirmed!” — now I didn't make that up, but that's what I said — none of us are affirmed and that's why Jesus had to die!Jesus didn't come into a world full of people who were doing okay without him. He came into a world of sinners destined for God's wrath and at the cross he says to every single one of us: You are separated from God! You deserve judgment! You are wrong!People don't like to hear that. That's a “hard saying.” And it's so hard to hear that some people can't get past that bad news part to the good news part. But listen to the good news!At the cross, Jesus is not only saying “you're wrong,” he's also saying “You're loved!” You're wrong and you're loved! It's not just that you're so sinful and screwed up that I had to die for you, it's that you're so loved that I willingly died for you.I came to die for you. I pursued the cross for you.Nobody takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord, and I laid it down for you!Look, get this: if we don't know we're sinners, that love means nothing to us. But if you can handle the bad news first — if you can not be offended by the first part — then the second part is the greatest wonder in all the history of the whole world. Jesus Christ really loves you.But many people never get there. It's a fact. We learn here it's expected. We know from Jesus, from Paul, from history — those offended by Jesus are expected. Now, here's the second thing we learn in this passage.2. Those called to Jesus will come and stay.We start to see this in verse 63, and speaking of unpopular teachings of Jesus, this one could be top of the list. Not only are we all sinners, but Jesus says in verse 63:“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all.”In other words, Jesus is saying, You can't save yourself! … You need to be saved but you don't have the power to do anything about it. But Jesus says he does — “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” John is reminding us in verse 64 that Jesus is fully aware of how everything will play out, but this is a hard saying:You all need to be saved, you can't save yourself, only I can save you, and some of you won't be.Then verse 65 is most clarifying. Jesus explains, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”Does everybody see that in verse 65? Do you hear what Jesus says? Nobody can come to Jesus unless the Father grants them to come. That's what he says! And oh, we humans don't like that! You mean to tell me that the most ultimate decisive factor in the universe is not my own will but it's God?!Yeah, exactly. That word “granted” in verse 65 means simply to give; and “coming to Jesus” is another way to talk about faith — therefore, Jesus is saying that our faith in him is a gift from God. If any of us has faith in Jesus it's because God gave it to us. And Jesus is just repeating here what he's already said twice in Chapter 6.Verse 37:“All that the Father gives me will come to me…” Verse 44:“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.”Effectual CallingThis is the biblical doctrine that historically has been called “effectual calling.” You hear that? Effectual calling. The 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith has an entire chapter titled “Effectual Calling.” (The same teaching is found in our Leader Affirmation of Faith, see 8.3.) But in the 1689 Confession, Chapter 10, paragraph 1 reads like this: Those whom God hath predestinated unto life, He is pleased in His appointed and accepted time, effectually to call, by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ …Paragraph 4,… [others] not being effectually drawn by the Father, they neither will nor can truly come to Christ, and therefore cannot be saved …And the footnote attached to this sentence says “John 6:65” — that's our verse. Believer in Jesus, this is your story. I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings here, but look, the reason you believe in Jesus is not because you're smarter than people who don't believe. It's not because you're better. It's not because you're lucky. It's because the Father granted you to come. Why are we here this morning? Why am I here? God is why! It's because of God. It's because he chose me before the foundations of the world and in his timing he effectually called me! Paul tells us the same thing again in 1 Corinthians 1. Go back to 1 Corinthians 1:23, … but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.If Jesus Christ is wonderful to you, that is God's doing. He called you. And this is really good news.Look at this — verse 66…You Leaving, Too?After Jesus said verse 65, this middle group of ‘disciples' had enough. Verse 66:“Many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.”They basically proved his point. And then in verse 67 Jesus looked at “the Twelve” — so this is not the middle group anymore, these are his closest disciples, his chosen Twelve — Jesus looked at them and said,“Do you want to go away as well?”And man, what a question! Do you hear that question? Jesus is gentle and lowly, and he's direct and to-the-point. And as this middle group is thinning out, he says to his Twelve, Y'all leaving too?Christian, Jesus asks that same question to you. I've heard him ask me that. I'm almost 40 years old, which is not old, but I'm old enough to know of too many people who have “turned back and no longer walk with him” … and every time I find out about somebody else, I hear him ask me: You leaving too? You've thought about it. At some point, if it hasn't yet, it's going to cross your mind. Would I — could I — ever want to do life without him? …The answer is No.We answer again and again the way Peter answers here in verse 68. This is Peter's highest moment, in my opinion. It's very similar to his confession of Jesus in Matthew 16. Peter says the right thing here.Called and KeptJesus says,“Do you want to go away as well?”Verse 68,And Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”Jesus, we're not going anywhere. We know who you are. You're the Messiah! You're the Holy One of God. You're the only one who can give us life. And in Matthew 16, after Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus repeats the same theology there that we see here. He says in Matthew 16, “For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven” (see Matthew 16:17). Jesus says here in verse 70:“Did I not choose you, the Twelve?”So just in case we were to think too highly of Peter (some do) — in case we were to give Peter the credit for his right answer — Jesus reminds us one last time that he's the one at work. He's the chooser. He's the revealer. He's the Savior. And if you're called, you're kept. This is why the call of the Father is such good news. Look: if our faith was something that we could accomplish, it'd also be something we could lose. If we came to Jesus on our own, then we could leave him the same way.God the Father is the reason we come to Jesus, and that is the reason we stay. For Our SecurityJohn mentions Judas again in verse 71 as a reminder that Jesus is sovereign over it all. Jesus is not surprised by anyone who leaves him. He knows those who are truly his — and he's gonna tell us more about this in Chapter 10, but the goal here, like it is there, is not our unsettledness, but our security. Jesus is not teaching us this so that we say, “Oh no, what if I'm not called?” He's teaching us this to assure us that our faith is grounded in a reality much stronger than ourselves. He's giving us a behind-the-scenes look here. It's like he's saying: this is what is going on at headquarters, but your concern is the field-assignment, and that is to believe. Our concern is to come to Jesus and to keep coming to Jesus — that's what we do — and we do it in the confidence that God is working. Those offended by Jesus are expected; those called to Jesus will come and stay — and if you're here this morning there's good reason to believe that you've been called (because you believe in Jesus!) — or you're being called today …The Gospel of John compels me to go here, and to invite you, everybody in the sound of my voice who has not come to Jesus yet, you can come to Jesus today. You can take that step. Verse 37, Jesus says,“All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”The Father is working. Take the step. Come to Christ! Trust in him! Say to him, from the heart:Jesus, I can't save myself and I'm done trying! You came to save me by dying on the cross and being raised from death!I put my faith in you! That is a prayer of faith, and that's what brings us to the Table. The TableAnd for those of us who have come to Jesus, who trust in Jesus Christ, this morning we can rest in the fact that he's our Savior, not ourselves. He called us, he keeps us, thanks be to God!We receive this bread and cup in that miracle. That's why this Table is for Christians. If you believe in Jesus this morning, we invite you to come to him yet again, and give him thanks!

What does an integrative approach to cancer look like? Jenn shares the physical, mental, and spiritual steps she took to heal. In 2015, Jenn was diagnosed with breast cancer – and by that point, it had already metastasized to multiple parts of her body. Her lymph nodes were the size of golf balls. It's a terrifying diagnosis for anyone, but all the more so as she thought of her four small children. Jenn lived near excellent cancer treatment centers and got multiple opinions – all pointing her to the standard of care for this type of diagnosis: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Despite it all, her intuition strongly told her that wasn't the right path for her. She ultimately decided to proceed with holistic approaches and only the minimal amount of surgery necessary. And in time, Jenn cleared her body of cancer and is living a vibrant life today. In our conversation, you'll hear… The details of the holistic path that Jenn took, including the therapies she used. Why she followed a low-carb, keto diet. About this interview: Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, either they have had it, or someone they love has, or someone in their family has died from it. With almost 1 in 3 people now getting a cancer in their lifetime, it is something that haunts us all. But despite all the money spent on cancer research, cancer rates remain ridiclously high and survival rates have barely improved. Current dogma is that cancer is caused by genetic mutation. But it hasn't always been the case. Otto Warburg almost a century ago proposed a metabolic cause, and now there is increasing evidence that this is the case. This means that most cancers can be prevented and for those with cancer, treatment can be improved if they factor in the metabolic component. Travis Christofferson is a prolific writer having written several books, including Curable and Tripping Over the Truth. In this conversation we talk about the metabolic origin of cancer and how best avoid it. I hope you enjoy the conversation. Episode Highlights [03:17] Travis' Background Travis has an undergraduate degree in biochemistry. He eventually took over the family business and got married. He then finished his master's degree, focusing on cancer metabolism for his independent study. The prevailing teaching during that time was that somatic mutations cause cancer. Travis was inspired by the book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease, to do a thesis on metabolic theory. Otto Warburg proposed the metabolic theory many years ago, but the medical community dismissed it as simplistic. New evidence reignited interest in the approach. [08:10] The State of Healthcare Public and health institutions have long accepted the somatic approach to cancer, with billions of dollars backing it. The United States spends the most per capita on health care expenditure among developed countries yet has the lowest life expectancy. The issue with the healthcare system lies in variations of treatment, over-treatment, and drug development process. The healthcare industry is focused more on treating diseases rather than preventing them. Although technology has advanced to assist people in tracking their health, people's health is deteriorating. Even if people live longer, they often experience illness and disability in their final years. [12:48] Changing the Healthcare Industry The healthcare incentive structure must change. Doctors get paid for every drug and procedure they prescribe, leading to overtreatment. There are emerging practices where doctors get a big bonus per patient who doesn't need procedures, encouraging them to keep patients in good health. When blood sugar levels rise, doctors usually diagnose diabetes. However, we can test for fasting insulin regularly to intervene. This test can also help people prevent other diseases and become more health-conscious. Change takes time with systems and industries, but we can take simple lifestyle interventions now. [16:01] Why People Are Getting Sicker Maintaining our health can be challenging. We've been conditioned that taking a magic pill is preferable to putting in the effort. Remember that metabolic dysregulation causes aging, not the other way around. In the last 10,000 years, humanity has drastically shifted to consuming processed foods, carbohydrates, and oils, resulting in noticeable consequences. People have also become sedentary. A hunter-gatherer society has no obesity, insulin resistance, or chronic systemic inflammation. However, we frequently see this in the Western world. [20:32] The Root of Diseases Understanding cellular health and inflammatory processes are critical in keeping yourself healthy. Periods of food scarcity have happened throughout humanity's evolution. Our bodies enter ketosis due to the caloric deficit but most never reach this state. Studies have shown that ketosis can help prevent diseases ranging from Alzheimer's to Parkinson's to cancer and diabetes. Constantly eating keeps our immune system active and prevents it from resting, which has implications for chronic inflammatory diseases. [24:53] What Happens During Ketosis? Ketosis happens in a fasted state, and a ketogenic diet is nutritional maintenance. When we fast, our bodies will mobilise the fat we have in our bodies and begin a process of beta-oxidation to burn off fat. A caloric deficit makes this process faster, converting fats into ketone bodies, which then take the place of glucose. Ketones have more thermodynamic energy and ATP per carbon unit compared to glucose. Ketosis also boosts antioxidant levels. Since diseases are oxidative, ketosis can help to combat illnesses. Listen to the episode to learn more! [32:01] Growing Healthcare Trends Research has shown that fasting before chemotherapy can reduce some radiation side effects Sugar is fuel for cancer cells, but doctors continue giving and allowing patients to consume it. There's more awareness of the latest research. The annual Metabolic Therapeutic Conference has grown to around 1600 attendees. When we approach doctors, we will receive information their institution has taught and allowed them to give us. Even with COVID-19, people have yet to explore treatments like monoclonal antibodies, hyperbaric, and Vitamin C. [44:00] The Abscopal Effect on Cancer The abscopal effect is when you target a single tumour site, but it affects other tumour sites in the body. Travis shares a case where someone with breast cancer on a checkpoint inhibitor received a much lower radiation dose. In that case, radiation was sufficient to systematically stimulate the immune system to attack cancer, improving the patient's chances of survival. [47:41] Advancements in Immunotherapy Using peptides to manipulate the immune system is still a trial and error process. The immune system's job is to survey for cancer, get rid of it early, and create a checkpoint to avoid attacking itself. [49:44] Emerging Cancer Treatment Research In detection, metastasis is an early stage event rather than a late-stage one. Cancer cells break off, dying when it reaches the bloodstream. This selection pressure creates different genetic mutations in tumours. The somatic mutation theory argues that a series of sequential mutations cause cancer, with each tumour site having a unique set of driving mutations. The epigenetic metabolic theory posits that these mutations are a side effect of the disease. All cancers burn sugar and evade the immune system, but mutations vary too much. Treatments should focus on epigenetic expression rather than mutations. [55:16] Researching Treatment Options The medical field is filled with uncertainty. Cancer treatment options have not been compared. After an in-depth look at clinical trials, we find that what seems to be the best treatment paradigm isn't always the right option. When conducting research, consider the data and evaluate it using a risk-reward framework. You can choose from low-risk alternatives. [59:59] The Soil Approach to Cancer Cancer grows in the presence of a favourable microenvironment and molecular events. It takes a long time for a chronic irritant to develop cancer cells. Cancer cells take on characteristics of our earliest genes, including replication and the appearance of early embryos. You can help your cells "behave" by providing oxygen and avoiding chronic irritants. Nurture the microenvironment through exercising and eating the right foods. Instead of focusing on the seed or cancer, we should concentrate on the soil or microenvironment. [1:04:05] Health and Longevity While we don't know humankind's natural and optimal states, ketosis and fasting provide a glimpse. Cells stop metabolising as we age, causing inflammation. We may be able to extend life spans if we can reduce senescent cells. Travis shares a study in which mice received fisetin, found in strawberries, reducing senescent cells and prolonging their life. There's a lot of new research on substances that kill senescent cells, like senolytics, quercetin, and other compounds. [1:08:49] About StageZero Life Sciences StageZero Life Sciences looks into markers of inflammation, insulin resistance, etc. They also recommend potential lifestyle interventions to change those markers. They are currently available in Richmond, Virginia, Toronto, and Ontario, Canada. 7 Powerful Quotes 'It's just a combination of probably a terrible diet and just not moving enough because we were designed to go out and have to work every day to catch food. That's what we evolved, and when you uncouple your physiology from that environmental niche, you see all kinds of problems' ‘It appears that evolution has built in a powerful signal to that when you're in a caloric deficiency, you switch your metabolism…to something called ketosis where you completely shift what you're burning to these little small molecules that come from fat,' ‘We're terrible at focusing on prevention. We focus on the disease, trying to treat it once it's already manifest, which is an absolutely horrible strategy.' ‘If we look at cancer then as the prime drivers being metabolic and epigenetic, that means that all of those things potentially could be modifiable, right? We don't have to target mutations. We can look for ways to change the way cells are expressing genes and so forth, and metabolising substrates and things like that.' ‘Just mind the microenvironment of your body, which is giving you the right food, exercising. It's designed to do that. Every time you do that, it brings down those inflammatory processes, and so forth.' ‘We tend to think we're in this modern era, but with regard to cancer, we will look back 200 years from now, realise that we were just in the Dark Ages. We're still using radiation which was invented about 110 years ago; chemotherapy was invented around World War II. That's still the mainstay of cancer treatments.' ‘When you really look deep, the two problems really are variation in treatment, over-treatment. The drug development process, I think, is one of the main problems too,' Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! Episode Highlights [03:45] Dr Charles' and Care Oncology's Background Charles has worked in oncology for 30 years. He started working at a big hospital in Charlotte, but pivoted after becoming legally blind. He eventually discovered Care Oncology, a company that applies metabolic strategies for cancer treatment. Care Oncology was started by Robin Bannister, a pharmacist and drug developer. His wife had developed stage-four breast cancer and had exhausted all treatment options. Robin selected four drugs commonly used for non-cancer disorders but were found to affect cancer. Robin selected four drugs based on human data, safety, non-overlapping effects, and their benefits for other chronic conditions. [08:46] Care Oncology's Approach Care Oncology uses metformin, atorvastatin, doxycycline, and mebendazole. The company kept to the dosage of the four drugs within a specific range. Additional drugs, like Prozac and oxaloacetate, also proved helpful along with the metabolic approach. Over the years, cancer research has focused more on the somatic mutation theory than the metabolic theory. The metabolic approach to cancer is slowly becoming more widespread. Even Dr Weinberg, who championed the hallmarks of cancer, added three more hallmarks that are purely metabolic. [16:52] Diet and Future of the Metabolic Approach From a somatic perspective, diet is not very important to curing cancer; however, food does affect cancer. The standard American diet of proteins and fruits and grains can cause issues for cancer patients. Care Oncology has recently merged with Stage Zero Life Sciences for early detection. They perform blood biopsies and are looking into the RNA expression of white blood cells. Early detection technology is slowly becoming more available. As the company expands, they intend to add various types of cancers to their treatment list. . Learn about Care Oncology's testing process by listening to the full episode. [30:38] What Care Oncology Prioritises Charles shares that Care Oncology prioritises the markers with the most impact, as nuanced tests are more expensive. The death rate from cancer may decrease, but the cancer rate is increasing. He shares how one in three women who get breast cancer become bankrupt after treatments. Care Oncology wants to reverse this experience by providing cheaper early detection methods through blood biopsies. Their process includes follow-ups and discussions. Their State Zero tests are currently available only in the US, but the company hopes to expand over time. [36:28] Why Early Detection is Important Tests can predict patterns before cancer physically manifests. It's important to get regular physicals, lifestyle checks, and screenings every 18 months to 2 years. The earlier you detect cancer, the higher the survival rate. . Early detection can also mean less expensive. According to Charles, colon cancer detected in stage one has a 90% chance of being cured. However, the later the cancer is detected, the lower the chance of being cured. It costs more to fix something than to prevent something. [43:11] There's No One Treatment for Everyone Charles shares that his best outcomes were when he customised treatments based on patients' needs. Unfortunately, cancer treatment is often too focused on following guidelines. It's important for patients to have hope that they can get better. Unfortunately, physicians have little time to fully engage with patients. There is no “right way” to treat cancer. What works for one patient may not work for others. Talk to your doctors about what you're putting in your body. This also applies to the vaccine and diet. [56:12] Balance is Key It's important to be aware of your sugar intake. A patient's BMI can have an impact on the success of treatments. Charles recommends intermittent fasting with a diet of animal protein, healthy fats, and low fructose fruits. Couple this diet with micro-exercises before and after meals. Our muscles are the biggest organ in our body, and they can act as metabolic neutralizers. Make sure your meals are balanced. Remember to consider your sleep and mood. [1:01:48] Find Opportunities Everything can be seen as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and to grow. See things as a challenge instead of a threat. Not everyone has a growth mindset, but people will develop this by identifying their purpose. [1:06:32] Dr Mekin's Recommendations: BEGSIS First, nostril breathing. Second, eat only real foods made up of fats, proteins, and low carbohydrates. Keep yourself hydrated. Get moving to maintain and enhance your functionality. Sleep. Make sure you recover and have your rhythms in order. Have intent and always have a mission bigger than yourself. Be social and involve yourself with others. Social isolation is a predictor of demise. [1:10:37] Focus on Fundamentals With everything happening in the world, it's easy to focus on the negative. Remember to be in the moment and look for the beauty in life. Get back to the core fundamentals. [1:13:33] Keep Testing Yourself Not everyone can do everything at the same time. Therefore, doctors need to help people prioritise what will work for them. Charles shares that he's very proud of Care Oncology's work in cancer treatment. Despite being 63, he likes to climb mountains annually to challenge himself. Charles details how he puts himself in uncomfortable situations in the full episode. [1:19:21] Future of Medicine Charles shares that the next ten years may change many things in medicine. Look into the research. Clinical practice is often behind the latest developments. Stay persistent and take care of yourself. Twenty years ago, people would die one year after losing their vitality and independence. Now, they tend to live up to 12 years. They may be alive, but they're often unhappy. 7 Powerful Quotes.' 'A healthy person has multiple wishes and ideas while a sick person only has one wish — that's to get better again. Early spending of the dedication of time and money pays off.' 'A lower dose metabolic protocol with prescription drugs and supplements, and lifestyle coaching prevent the development of disease or cancer.' 'If you find cancer in stage one, you have a greater than 90% cure, which is surgery at most. Then if you find it in stage four, the cure rate drops down to the mid-teens, then you're never off treatment, and you will spend a fortune.' '...to eat anything. That is the worst advice that you can give a cancer patient.' "We're evolutionarily designed to eat primarily fats and proteins with some seasonal carbohydrates. So that's what 99% of our biology was based on.' 'Sometimes, an ounce of prevention could save you financially and, actually, health.' Episode Highlights [03:30] Breaking the Misconceptions about Arthritis Arthritis is more than a wear-and-tear condition; it's an inflammatory disease process. It is not limited to the elderly. The disease process can begin with minor injuries, even those sustained as a child. Arthritis is a combination of genetics and environmental factors triggered by trauma. [08:25] Arthritis as an Inflammatory Disease Process Arthritis is a disease process like neurodegenerative and cardiac illnesses. Our bodies follow a balanced way to deal with injuries. It releases the level of cytokines that set off the body's response to healing and recovery. Afterwards, cytokine levels fall, and anti-inflammatory proteins take over. The disease process begins during Imbalance in any part of the process. It can be started as too many cytokines lead to zombie cells and lack of autophagy. [12:20] General Approaches to Addressing Arthritis Turn off inflammatory cytokines through simple supplements like curcumin or epigallocatechin. Turning down the inflammatory response allows the injury to heal better. Inducing autophagy or knocking off the bad cells helps reduce injury as well. [13:36] Arthritis is a Preventable Disease Arthritis is a disease that should be given more attention, as it has a significant impact on people's quality of life. It is the primary cause of disability among people of working age. Arthritis is preventable to a large degree, despite genetics and other factors. [18:32] Current Orthopedic Treatments for Arthritis The focus in addressing arthritis is to treat the disease process. Steroid injections temporarily reduce inflammatory cytokines, but they also inhibit those that aid in healing. Arthroscopic surgery can provide immediate comfort. However, it can also inflict tears that can cause the rapid progression of arthritis. Back fusion can help cases of spinal instability. However, for degenerative discs, the long-term success rate of surgery is around 10% of those who undergo it. [24:09] Degenerative Disc Disease as an Inflammatory Disease Degenerative disc disease is an inflammatory disease caused by high levels of cytokines. This includes the nuclear factor kappa beta. The goal is to focus on the issues that cause disc destruction, such as elevated cytokine levels, rather than the disc itself. Ageing processes, like degeneration, should serve as a wake-up call to reconsider one's diet. This also includes reconsidering supplements, and exercise, as well as one's cardiovascular health. [27:18] Changing the Perspective about Arthritis People should be aware that arthritis begins in their 20s, similar to brain disorders, heart ailments, and cancers. All these immune and inflammatory diseases come down to curing ageing. We need to take proactive steps and opt for longevity instead of a mechanical standard of care. Opting for the ‘expensive' care earlier will save you time, stress, and money. People often exhaust traditional options first before pursuing longevity treatments. [38:49] Pentosan Polysulfate: ‘A Cure for Arthritis' Pentosan polysulfate is a repurposed drug that reduces cytokines causing degenerative disc pain. According to studies, even after just six weeks of using Pentosan Polysulfate, you can continue to reap the advantages for up to a year. [45:07] Vitamins and Supplements to Combat Arthritis Another strategy to fight arthritis is to make sure your nutrients are optimised. Vitamins D and C, and zinc are critical but straightforward micronutrients. Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, has many benefits that aid in addressing arthritis. Its benefits include muscle-building, fat loss, and myostatin blocking. [47:07] Benefits of Gaining Muscle Muscle, as an organ, produces endocrine glands, and myokines have very beneficial effects on joints. Those with sarcopenia or muscle loss are more likely to develop joint arthritis. Electrical stimulation of muscles can be done for individuals who are further along in a disease process. Static contraction or contracting the muscles for three seconds every hour also helps muscle-building. [51:03] Inducing Autophagy Process Using Spermidine Spermidine is a polyamine compound that comes from bacteria in certain foods. Polyamine is produced by the human body as well. However, as we become older, we make less of it. It is an autophagy-Inducing agent that aids in getting rid of damaged cells. Spermidine works better than steroids at reducing inflammation. It preserves the joints without making them worse. [54:06] Trehalose: The ‘Sugar Substitute' Trehalose is glucose that impacts oxidative stress and helps clean up the cells. It has zero glycemic impact, which helps blood glucose under control. Trehalose is looked at for neurodegenerative diseases but can benefit joint pain. [56:57] Peptide Therapies as Simple, Inexpensive Aid If you are looking for simple, inexpensive aid, collagen peptides can also be beneficial. They typically are part of a mixture including Vitamin C, which helps cartilage cells. A more expensive option is aggressive peptides, like BPC 157 or Body Protection Compound 157. These peptides can aid joint regeneration. It's vital to understand the role of inflammation in arthritis rather than jumping at treatments, like stem cell therapy. [59:54] The Role of Stressed Immune System Almost every disease is related to over-aggressive, pro-inflammatory cytokines, disruption in mitochondrial function, and autophagy. Ageing causes a significant number of diseases. The immune system goes awry for many reasons, including viral exposures. [59:54] Antiviral Drugs, Hormones, and Fasting Antiviral drugs, hormones, and fasting can help the immune system fight diseases as healthy as possible. EGCG and curcumin are natural compounds that have some antiviral properties. Acyclovir is also a safe choice for combatting the herpes virus and Epstein-Barr, among others. Our immune system produces fewer hormones as we become older. Our bodies need hormones to function, so we need to replace them somehow. Hormones have huge immune-modulating properties that help stop oxidative stress. The immune system benefits from the recovery period following a fast. It can be very beneficial to clear out dead cells. [1:08:55] Rapamycin and Metformin: The ‘Future' of Arthritis Rapamycin is a chemotherapeutic medication with a solid immune-modulating effect. It is well-known for activating autophagy, which can lengthen lifespan in all mammalian species scientists have studied. Metformin is an inexpensive medication that keeps glucose control. It has some interesting studies on arthritis. One study shows the overlapping benefits in cardiovascular, renal, cancer, and obesity protection. 7 Powerful Quotes “[Arthritis as an inflammatory disease process] is the same thing that goes on with COVID. Right? Yes. Why do some people die of COVID? [It's] usually not the virus itself -- it's the immune reaction to the virus.” “So we know we have to treat [cytokines] and not the disc itself. That's the end game. Treat the problem that's causing the disc damage.” “...[W]e're really trying to get into the heads of these [20-year-olds] and say, the [disease process starts when you're] 20. Yeah, like your brain diseases, your heart diseases, and your cancers are all those processes are starting in our 20s.” “The plastic surgeons are doing fine. [P]eople are more than willing to spend that money on their facelifts and things like that [than] internally to feel better.” “You can have no cartilage and no pain or no discs, and no gain. The pain is an inflammatory sign.” “Go back, go back up the tree. And then you had all of the diseases in mitochondria and information.” "Be it cancer, metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, or neurologic arthritis, they're all the same disease. You've got to get the immune system as healthy as possible. You have to stop oxidative stress." Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! In this episode we have the pleasure of talking with science writer Travis Christofferson. We begin by discussing the emerging paradigm of Cancer as a Metabolic disease, and how this new approach can overturn, or build on top of, the discoveries we have achieved while approaching cancer as a genetic disease. We also talk about the importance of “outsiders” coming into specific fields and the need for empathic and trust-building narratives to support cross-disciplinary collaboration. We talk about the emerging possibilities of blending human agency and intuition with the power of statistics and machines, the importance of “mindset” to utilize stress instead of being used by it, and a few other things on the science of longevity. Travis Christofferson has a degree in molecular biology and a master's degree in material engineering and science. He is a full-time science writer and published the best selling book Tripping Over the Truth which shows how the Metabolic Theory of Cancer is overturning one of Medicine's most entrenched paradigms. He is the founder of The Foundation for Metabolic Cancer Therapies, and the co-founder of Care Oncology. Even the most resilient and strongest individuals are not safe from the bone-deep exhaustion that cancer can bring. Treatment protocols will vary depending on a patient's condition, but they may cause fatigue. While it takes an average of 17 years for medical research to reach clinical practice, it is beyond doubt that there are now better ways to treat cancer. Did you know there is now emerging evidence that a ketogenic diet combined with standard cancer treatment may help patients? We often hear about the ketogenic diet from the fitness industry, but it's more than just for managing weight, glucose and insulin levels. Research shows it can also starve cancer cells and eventually kill them off! In this episode, Dr Dominic D'Agostino discusses how the ketogenic diet has evolved and how we can adopt a proper ratio for our lifestyle. He also shares the press-pulse control to manage cancer, which includes utilising ketosis, Vitamin C and oxygen. Don't wait until you're diagnosed with a disease to become more mindful of your lifestyle and nutrition! Prevention is key if you want to live healthier. If you want to learn more about fighting cancer and several other diseases through the ketogenic diet, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Understand how exogenous ketones and the ketogenic diet can help make your cells more resilient and even combat cancer! Remember that we need to prioritise preventing diseases. Starting early is key. Learn how cancer cells function and how to kill them without suffering from side effects common from drugs. Episode Highlights [03:40] Dr Dom's Background Dr Dom majored in nutrition science and biology, then studied neuroscience for his PhD. Specifically, he studied the neural control of our physiology through electrophysiology. This includes respiratory and cardiovascular controls. His research interests then led him to study diving physiology and hyperbaric technologies. For over 15 years, Dr Dom has been developing hyperbaric technologies and nutritional and supplemental therapies to protect people from high hyperbaric conditions. [06:14] How to Make Cells More Resilient Dr Dom shares that electrophysiology in hyperbaric chambers can directly measure neurons in response to the graded levels of oxygen in the chamber. Oxygen can provide a therapeutic effect, but too much of it can lead to a seizure (oxygen toxicity). His research on measuring the cellular response on the level of mitochondria and plasma membrane led him to study how to control the metabolic states of the cell to make them more resilient to extreme environments. Dr Dom worked with the NAVY Seal divers and focused on treatments such as lactate, glucose and ketones to enhance cell metabolic states and reduce seizures. Ketones can not only make cells more resilient but also help maintain resting membrane potential and have less oxidative stress. [12:07] How the Ketogenic Diet has Evolved The ketogenic diet is celebrating its 100th year anniversary in clinical use. It started as a standard of care for drug-resistant epilepsy in children. Anti-epileptic drugs have been found to delay learning development in kids, while the diet can enhance development. The ketogenic diet has also evolved over the years. The modified Atkins diet, or MADD, utilises a 20–25% protein diet. The quantity and type of fat are important when considering a ketogenic diet. Listen to the full episode to learn more! Over the years, research on the ketogenic diet and its applications have surged. Now, Dom is working with the Navy to not only use ketones to block seizures, but to also enhance performance. [18:56] What is the Ketogenic Diet for? There are two primary uses for the ketogenic diet: life-saving and prevention. If your intent is to manage seizure disorders, neurological disorders, cancers, and other disorders, you need to implement a ketogenic diet continuously. Using the ketogenic diet for prevention can be for controlling glucose and insulin levels. It's better to prevent disorders and diseases by getting ahead of the problem. For example, those who are pre-diabetic should start monitoring their glucose levels and learn how to eat better to avoid becoming diabetic. [23:13] Prioritise Prevention Diabetes can be the gateway to a host of other diseases. Prevention is key. The ketogenic diet can be very effective in controlling your glucose and insulin levels. When tracking your glucose levels, don't focus on single time points. Instead, observe how the levels change over time. Understand the dynamic of glucose in your body. You can correlate them with changes in inflammatory markers. You can check whether you're in ketosis through biomarkers that can be measured through breath, blood or urine ketones. [27:26] How to Adopt the Ketogenic Diet to Your Lifestyle The ketogenic diet is four parts fat and one part combination of protein and carbohydrates. This means around 90% fat, 8 to 10% protein, and around 10 grams of fibrous carbohydrates. This is the recommended diet used for pediatric epilepsy. You can also modify the diet if you find it too strict and difficult to follow. Ketones have been found to be anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and have epigenetic effects. [29:23] Managing Cancer Through the Ketogenic Diet It's not enough to cut down on sugar. Cancer cells are metabolically flexible and can use other sources like glutamine, fatty acids, and more. Studies show that if you take away glucose from cancer cells and give them ketones, they will eventually die. Cancer patients will experience the Warburg effect, where cells revert to a primitive form of energy metabolism by directing biomolecules to anabolic processes. However, this also allows cancer cells to grow, divide and expand. Treating cancer can be done by blocking DNA replication like chemotherapy or by energy restriction. While you cannot fast forever, you can achieve the fasting state through a ketogenic diet. [38:33] Utilise Autophagy to Kill Cancer Cells Cancer cells naturally have higher energy demand than healthy cells. When you restrict energy, you can stimulate autophagy, slowing down tumour growth and eventually killing it. There may be forms of cancer that can capitalise on autophagy, but this is not common. [43:55] How to Use Vitamin C to Combat Cancer Glucose monitors tend to also detect Vitamin C as blood sugar since they are very similar. However, ascorbic acid can be antagonistic to glucose by using the same transporter. When you have high physiological levels of Vitamin C, you can impair glucose metabolism in cancer cells. Vitamin C can also help create the Fenton Effect, where it further increases oxidative stress in tumours. [49:42] How Much Oxygen Is Enough for Cancer Cells? Cancer cells can die when exposed to a rise in oxygen. Dr Dom shares that his study used a 2.5 atmosphere of oxygen given for 60 minutes three days a week. This was done using a soft-shell chamber. Lower levels of oxygen can still be beneficial for cell production. Dr Dom recommends taking Vitamin C on the same day as getting hyperbaric oxygen therapy. [55:29] What to Remember When You Have Cancer Nutrition should be the core of general health and cancer therapy. Restrict sugar, optimize glycemic control and suppress insulin. Do intermittent fasting if you can. If you're overweight, be more aggressive with fasting and the ketogenic diet. If you're underweight, make sure you have enough protein and nutrients. Dr Dom recommends foods like eggs, sardines, raw vegetables like salads, olive oil, nuts and non-glycemic fibrous carbohydrates. He also recommends taking exogenous ketones to further boost ketosis. [1:02:53] Types of Exogenous Ketones MCT is useful for fat and ketone. You can also use ketone salts which are bound to electrolytes like sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Racemic compounds optimise signalling and delivery pathways. You don't want spikes in your glucose and ketones. Listen to the full episode to learn more! [1:09:08] Dr Dom's Recommendations Dr Dom has always been interested in fitness. Not only is he interested in the science of nutrition, but he also applies it to himself. Our bodies can withstand fasting. The more you do it, the easier it gets, and you'll get more benefits. Remember to take care of your body. 7 Powerful Quotes ‘Oxygen is a stimulant to the brain, and if we get too high, it can actually trigger a seizure.' ‘...some of the anti-epileptic drugs, if they are given to kids, they can cause developmental delays. Whereas if you administer a ketogenic diet, it actually enhances learning and memory.' ‘We believe that it's very important if you're pre-diabetic, to get different wearable technologies that will tell you and coach you how to eat so you don't become diabetic.' ‘Warburg hypothesized that the cells were producing, were fermenting because the mitochondria were damaged, and they were defaulting to a more primitive form of energy production.' ‘The ketogenic diet is mimicking fasting and I think that the suppression of the hormone insulin, the reduction in glucose availability, and the elevation of ketones are all contributing to the anti-cancer effect.' ‘...nutrition is really about the patient's health and they should not be advised to just eat anything to gain weight.' ‘I think it's important to push the limit as well. I mean, I was always interested in fitness, and working out, strength training has been a form of self-medication.' When it comes to Oil and Gas Data and Operational Efficiency, Zack Warren aka Z-Dubz is THAT dude. Zack has a "traditional" background for an Oil and Gas guy - Dallas-born and raised, and smart enough to get a job at ExxonMobil right out of college, and then migrating to Denver to start a family. But now...a Warrening...Zack has extreme velocity in the Oil & Gas consulting world. Fun listen with an emerging CEO live from Dr. Funkenstein's basement. Getting coffee earlier today, a barista asked T-Lo: “Sir, are you a Rocket Scientist with an PHD from Stanford? No? Thought so. You should talk to Karthik Balikrishnan though. He is. What states come to mind when you think Oil & Gas? Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, North Dakota, Alabama. Wyoming....wait, Alabama? Well, Jerris Johnson has a good story behind how he became a “Land Man” in the Oil patch and how that landed him in Birmingham...and why he chose to stick around even when given the choice to leave. A Sooner by birth and hater of the Crimson Tide, Jerris talks about carving his own path, his growing company, and some of the differences between working for Operators based in Oil cities and those further from the action. Fun perspective, enjoy! The post JJ in Bama on Tripping Over the Barrel appeared first on Digital Wildcatters.
Should the industry stop using BOE and switch to BOV? Dwayne Purvis thinks so. Nerd alert: We dig deep into the science of Oil & Gas...but we also got into the man, Big Perv: Dwayne grew up the son of a preacher, with no interest in working in Oil & Gas...but fate and scholarship money led him to it. Also, Dwayne educates TLo and the Funkmeister on what life is like as a consultant in Oil & Gas, and a discussion about accents ensues. A great episode with another great personality. Matt Harriman likes making work suck less. He even says it on his company, Pod2's, website. Anyhow, Matt walks us through his history, what he enjoys doing, his consulting company and technology ideas. Bonus: Dr. Funkenstein records this episode from the confines of another DW podcaster's home, a toddler shows up mid-podcast, and T-Lo talks about driving all over Texas - moving one daughter into College, the day after marrying another daughter within 21 hours.
